    Steak sandwich and nuggets.

I had absolutely no idea this town existed until we took the back roads from Big Bear Lake back to Los Angeles a few weeks ago. When we entered the small town of Blue Jay I was pretty excited since I'm a life long Toronto Blue Jays fan and a lover of small blue birds in general. Almost as soon as you enter the town you also drive by Blue Jay Burger and that was enough for us to pull the car into the drive through and take a gander at the menu. This place looks like a pretty typical fast food establishment with burgers, chicken sandwiches, fries, and the beverages to help wash them all down. Now, I don't remember the name of the sandwich I ordered but it doesn't seem to be on the restaurants website so I'll just throw out a a description. I didn't order a burger, I ordered a sort of stank sandwich between a burger patty and the sandwich itself was pretty solid. The sandwich had lettuce and tomato on it and did the job. The french fries were also solid, being lightly crispy and having solid flavour. The funniest thing I ate at this place was the chicken nuggets which were ALMOST indentical to a McDonald's McNugget from the shape to the flavour, but hey, no complaints from this guy. Overall, I'm sure Blue Jay Buger is a great place to have if you live in a town like Blue Jay. This fast food shop offers some local community flavour instead of the copy and paste chains most places have and that's certainly not a bad thing. Although this wasn't the best of anything I've ever had, it was a solid spot for a quick lunch before we were back on the road. Is it worth stopping by? I think so, it's always nice to grab some food off the beat and path and experience some small town flavour.

Stopped by the drive-thru to check out the burgers. We both had the cowboy burgers; Onion rings, bacon, cheese, BBQ sauce, and small fries, it was $27 ouch!!! Burger was not seasoned, tasted bland, similar to a frozen patty from a flat top, also undercooked with pink in the middle. Not bad, not good, but not great, definitely not worth $27 bucks! Maybe $10? Doesn't take much to improve a burger folks, and for that price? Come on now.

Walking in yesterday, it was such a good-vibe, welcoming place. There was sunshine coming through the large windows and color all around. Our waitress was warm and welcoming as well as on top of our dining needs, even as it got busier. We 4, two of us being vegetarians, each found something delicious to enjoy. I got the BAT Omelette, which was generous with cheese, avocado, bacon, and as a delightful switch up, cherry and grape tomatoes. The presentation was a feast for the eyes, with its dainty and colorful flower petals on top. In fact, all dishes were beautifully presented. I ordered fruit instead of potatoes, which was enough to share. My mom found her bagel and lox delectable and a large enough portion to take 1/2 home. Friends found vegetarian enjoyment in the Goat omelette and the breakfast sammie. They were both well pleased with bellies full. All of us were happy brunchers ! As we dined, the place welcomed a steady stream of guests, both inside and out, which is furry best friend welcoming. So, on Sundays, come early. Great food, vibe, service....a perfect opportunity to break bread together when local or up the hill for a visit.

When it comes to burgers, this place came to play hard ball! They serve up 1/3 lb Angus beef that is absolutely tasty! I had the "Hudson Hornet" - a mushroom & Swiss burger with all the fix'ns. Dripping with deliciousness! The grilled onions really complete the burger (comes with). All of their burgers look great! My son had the Chevy Impala - a bacon cheeseburger with their awesome onion rings and bbq sauce. A MUST have at the Cedar Glen Malt Shop is their ice cream! They use THRIFTY's Ice cream!! Whether you go for their shakes, malts, reg ice cream or go big and get their Banana Royale (I did) or the banana split, you won't be disappointed or hungry! Another note worth mentioning, they offer a gracious Military discount. Just ask. Parking can be difficult to find especially right when they open. I've noticed people pretty much park wherever they can. This place is also very popular with the locals. Thank you Audrey & Candy for the great experience! The staff their love their job and it shows!! Happy 80th Anniversary Cedar Glen Malt Shop, I wish you guys many, many more wonderful years serving some of the best 50's Diner food around! We had a mini vacation in Lake Arrowhead, and this business was one that I was looking forward to…read more Why? A tasty thick malt sounded amazing, especially if the business is kind of known for it with many options. I had not had a malt in so long. I kept wondering when we could find a window to squeeze this in. We finally walked a mile over from where we stayed (a lot of this was uphill so that was rough for me) and we plopped down, ready for our malts. I ordered a rocky road malt and Steven ordered a chocolate chip malt. The server was surprised at the easy order she received as we did not order any food or anything. Yet, it still took some time. Finally the malts arrived, but unfortunately we were left so disappointed. Malts are supposed to be thicker than shakes, but these drinks were pretty much just melted ice cream. So, we are not sure if the orders were placed as shakes and still much more melted than other shake shops, or what happened. I felt like I was drinking melted ice cream with a spoon. Once I got through my glass, I didn't bother trying to pour more from my metal cup into the regular cup. I just started scooping from the extra stainless steel cup, hoping to save some thicker portions in there. There were a few, but not a lot. Since I was expecting a thick malt or something thicker than liquid ice cream, I devoured it pretty fast and now had a tummy ache. We tried it, but it didn't work out for us.

Our waiter could not have been nicer. I wish I could remember his name. He was so kind and eager to make our visit a good one. We started with the deep fried mushrooms which were good, but a little too heavily battered for my taste. They came with 2 dipping sauces, a spicy aoli style and an Asian chili sauce (sweet). I had the grilled salmon with lemon caper sauce. It came with your choice of 2 sides. I got the fully loaded baked potato and steamed vegetables. My meal was delicious and a large serving that I could not finish. Good value at $24. My husband got the ribeye with herb roasted potatoes and a salad. The salad was large and fresh with plenty of carrots and tomatoes. The herb roasted potatoes were delicious, but I would definitely get the fully loaded baked potato again. My husband said his ribeye was delicious and cooked exactly as he asked (medium). I had a martini which was a generous pour and the bartender even hand-stuffed some olives with blue cheese for me which was really kind as the bar was quite busy. The atmosphere was great - filled with people enjoying themselves dining, talking, and laughing. Restrooms were spacious and clean. My only complaint was that the seats were hard wood. It would be nice to have cushions of some sort, but that won't stop us from coming back for the good food & drinks, and great service at lake arrowhead sports grill and bar!

We ordered the Pupu Platter which came with only one conglomerate piece of tempura when reportedly we were supposed to get 4 separate pieces. The coconut shrimp was raw as seen in the photo. Fortunately they replaced this with another platter of coconut shrimp. The shrimp and mahi mahi tacos were great as was the mushroom ravioli. However the NY strip (which came recommended) had an uneven cook as seen in the photo which looks as if they did not let the steak come to room temperature before cooking. Also was very Underseasoned with a bland taste. The mashed potatoes (also pictured) was bland as well without a creamy texture as expected of mashed potatoes. No complaints about service. Would like to think maybe we caught them on an off day since it was Memorial Day weekend but unfortunately the food left a lot to be desired. May have been better to just save the money and make a decent dish at home.
