I was walking around Pier 39 and stumbled upon the Pier Market Stand. I was taking one of my friends from Texas around the Bay Area and wanted him to try unique food items that he cannot really get in Texas. We bought the clam chowder bread bowl and he absolutely loved it. It's creamy, hearty, savory and oh so good. It's not too expensive also costing less than $12 which is hard to find nowadays in the Bay Area. But parking around Pier 39 is very expensive. So it makes that bread bowl more expensive lol. But if you are in the area and looking for a quick snack or even a meal, I highly recommend the Pier Market Stand's clam chowder bread bowls. Very very delicious! They also have a restaurant but I haven't tried it yet and will definitely try it soon. read more

So there are two options for eating here. There is a full service restaurant with a larger menu called Pier Market. In front of this restaurant is a take out stand that has similar options from the main restaurant but available to go. If I had the time I would've liked to sit down and eat in the restaurant. BUT because of time constraints on our travels we opted to grab something to go. In my opinion I would've rather just grabbed the fish and chips to go at the take out counter over sitting in the restaurant. I mean is there a real difference between the fish and chips from sit down and the takeout counter? I will say the fish and chips from the counter were amazing. Came here pretty late (9pm) on a Tuesday night. Staff was all super friendly. My husband and I shared a fried fish platter, consisting of shrimp, cod, and calamari and of course, french fries. We also got the popcorn scallops to share. Everything was cooked well, but definitely we overdid it on the fried food. Thank goodness we were sharing. I also got a cup of chowder, which was delicious! After spending 3 hours exploring the Pier, it was finally time to eat! We stopped by here, which is right on Pier 39 that has both a takeout stand and a dine-in restaurant. My little cousin and his friends loved everything! We ordered a bit of everything from their fried menu: two orders of fish & chips, plus one order each of the fried calamari and shrimp. The kids weren't fans of the cocktail sauce haha but we all loved the tartar sauce! Everything was fried to perfection. Crispy, flavorful, and cooked just right. Nothing was overdone or undercooked. The seasoning on the fried calamari, in particular, was absolutely delicious. We didn't get a chance to try the clam chowder this time because we were completely full and satisfied by the end of our meal, but we'll definitely be back to try it next time! I had the clam chowder and it was super hot and delicious. We went on a very busy day but they still serve us super quickly.

We decided to play tourist this weekend and enjoyed a nice city day in SF! We wanted to grab a quick meal before our GoCar rental and saw Pier Market Stand while checking out the wharf and the sea lions. Their options were decently priced and sounded promising. I also like that they have a display by the cashier of the different menu items because I'm a visual thinker/decider. My boyfriend and I ended up ordering the calamari and chips, the shrimp and cod ceviche, and a small chowder. Our whole meal was just about $30. Honestly a steal for bay area - especially in such a touristy location! The servings look small but we were full after and didn't even finish our fries (even though I wanted to because they were delicious). I think because the stand is takeout only, they're able to be a little more affordable. They actually have a sit down restaurant as well with a larger menu right next door if that's what you're looking for. For something quick, this stand hits the spot, plus there's plenty of benches to eat at right across the stand and all around the wharf. Now for the food - my boyfriend and I both liked the ceviche the most. It could use a pinch more salt, but otherwise the flavors were great and so was the fish texture. The calamari and fries were good too. I'm not sure why, but those fries really hit the spot. They were nice and crispy, just the way I like them. The chowder was on the creamier side and could use a little more salt/umami, but honestly I prefer it not salty enough than too salty, so I can always add it myself if needed. Anytime I've been to San Francisco, I always ate at Boudins but I decided to venture outside my normal and try this place instead. Located on bustling Puer 39, it was only a about a 7 minute walk to the Alacatraz ferry entrance, which was perfect for our plans. We ordered fried calamari, fried shrimp and a bowl of Clam Chowder. Everything was great! The shrimp was tasty, not dry and crunchy, same with the calamari! I would've preferred for there to have been a calamari sauce to go along with it but we made it work with the other sauce from the shrimp. The star of the show was definitely the clam chowder! It was tasty, rich and full of seafood! It didnt feel like they were skimping on the amount of seafood in there which we were very happy with! It made foe the perfect snack before out tour! Fish and chips- first time trying fish in chips in a long while and ITS SOO GOOD! When the fish and chips came out, I could hear crackling from how fresh and fried it was. Presentation was beautiful. I cant tell you how it tasted right when it came out (cause I was gaming) but I can tell you my first bite eas HEAVENLY! The crunch from the beer batter was like nothing Ive ever tasted. (I rarely get to try restaurant beer battered food). Like it was so good the next few bites, the fish was getting in the way of the beer batter lol. The fish was also perfect, light on flavor, I dipped the white sauce, salt and pepper, and lemon the fish on separate occassions. None of the seasoning stood out imo. I prefer the white sauce tho. The bites after the first did get less and less good as my stomach got full, but thats not to say the flavor got worse, I was just getting fuller, but it did get less crispy as the ratio became more even with fish and crunch. You can tell my favorite part was the beer batter lol. Fish was good too I have no problems with it and can tell the quality. The fries are alright, not bad, they're like mcdonalds fries in shape and texture but with less flavor and stay same texture longer. Salad was a nice touch to cleanse my palate. I dont often have leftovers at restaurants anymore and I finished all the fish but still had a good amount of fries and salad left when I got too full to eat. Extra I was still gaming when the dish came out so later the waiter asked if everything was alright and if I wanted ketchup. Was then given a full bottle of ketchup, nice I think the waiter was about to take my plate when I was finished but I asked for a takeout box instead . this was our first time visiting here so we opted for the to go stand because there was a little hefty line for the place. Now i had no real expectation for the place but they shut me up in the best way possible! This place has to have the BEST fish n' chips i've ever had. & i've got to quiet a few places out here in Sf, Monterey, Santa Cruz,& wherever else but this one. was soooo delicious! Oh my goodness the clam chowder is so good!! We're visiting from Boston so we eat a lot of chowder back home. We tried the stand because we didn't have enough time for sit down. The clam chowder was LOADED with clams. I can honestly say I've never had so many goodies in a bowl of clam chowder. 100% worth getting. My friend and I came to the pier on New Year's Eve and we were hungry for a small snack. We decided to try this stand because they have an award for best clam chowder. Service: The line was short and quick. The staff was nice and efficient. However, we had to wait a bit to get our food. Food: We got the Clam Chowder and Crab Cake Sandwich. The clam chowder was amazing! It was extremely hot in temperature and very flavorful! I loved the herbs and black pepper they put in the chowder! With the addition of the crackers, it was perfect! My family came amid COVID-19 in November. Twas not it. The Pier Market is located right outside the restaurant for a casual order and take away situation. It was fine, however, the food was not good. We shared the following: -fresh salmon burger ($7.95 - maybe higher) -sourdough bread bowl with New England Clam Chowder (maybe $9.95) -shrimp and crab on bannock sandwich ($7.75) - seafood salad on bread situation I'm sure it's fine now, if you want to dine in, but if you're still a little on the weary side, you can take your food toward the pier where are there are plenty of benches and seagulls for your liking. In any case, the entrees we chose were very lacking in flavor - they just weren't it. And they were incredibly dry and not likable. I think if you're looking for a dining experience, you should probably plop yourself on the waitlist. You are walking around - checking out stores ; doing all touristy stuff and this was one restaurant which had separate section for take out and not just that - a separate pricing for take out too. I ordered 1 fish & chips, 1 shrimp & chips , 1 wine and 1 beer. Food was good. Fish & chips was very very tasty. Only con was they give only 1 sauce but I went to the counter to ask more and they gave me 1 more. Wait time was 15 -20 min/ Good food. Normal price and at pier 39. My husband ate shrimp & chips and he liked it too. I am not a shrimp person. We even ordered wine & beer and wine was served in cute small bottle with glass. I usually stop here for a quick snack while checking out the city or the Piers. Ordered a Clam Chowder in Bread Bowl - Hot clam chowder in sourdough bread in the chilly weather of SF is pure bliss. The chowder is rich and creamy and not spicy with decent chunks of clams and few potatoes and the sourdough bread just enhances the taste of it. It's always been great food...until tonight. It's my daughters 11th birthday (August 9th) and she chose Pier Market for dinner. We were all looking forward to a great meal. First thing we noticed was no more great sourdough bread! Seriously? It's what SF is known for and Boudin is right there. Our waiter apologized and brought us some little dinner rolls. We ordered appetizers of calamari and crab cakes. The calamari no longer comes in rings, like, well, calamari. It now looks like clam strips with a lot of breading. It was just ok. The order of crab cakes consisted of 2, each totally different in flavor. One was bland, but my husband said the second one was good, though neither had a strong crab taste. For our entrees, my daughter and one other person at our table ordered clam chowder bread bowls. My daughter said the soup was OK, but tasted different than any other time she had it. My husband ordered fish and chips and our daughters best friend had chicken tenders. Neither finished. I had seafood penne - the same dish I get every time. It's always been chunks of fish, muscles, clams, nice big shrimp and veggies over penne pasta with a nice creamy sauce. Tonight it was a bowl of brown mush. Two clams, two muscles, one decent bite-size piece of fish and some small flakes, and tiny bay shrimp with broccoli so overcooked you couldn't pick it up with a fork as it fell apart. All mixed in with penne pasta. Instead of the great creamy sauce, it was all stuck together with a very thick brown paste. No, I didn't finish it. Halfway through dinner my husband asked if I thought the place was under new management, they got a new chef or if they just changed all the recipes. Sadly, this was our go-to place. I understand a restaurant can have an off night with a dish or 2. But ALL of them? I'm sure we'll eventually give them another try - we've been going there for years. Had late a lunch date with the husband without the kids! (Thank heavens for our babysitter!) Indoor dining was open and since it was just the 2 of us we were able to sit at the bar. The bartender, Rosie, is amazing! She was just a great multitasker, pouring drinks, taking orders and entertaining. We had a refreshing mango cart, without froth! Had calamari and clam chowder. Our orders were served right away. Calamari was crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, with just the right amount of seasoning. Clam chowder was delightful, rich and creamy with fresh clams and potatoes and perfect amount of black pepper! We didn't even add anything on it! Customer service is great, staff were pretty accommodating and attentive: offering water, and extras. They also offer a to-go stand for those adventurous ones who wants to eat in front of the seals or those who risk their sourdoughs from the pigeons. The small isn't enough. The crab cake was pretty good, we ordered it on its' own to see how it would taste. It was very hot and fresh; with plenty of crab in there.
