One of the best shops on Forbes in Squirrel Hill. I also try different tea shops when I am in different cities, but this is my favorite. The store owner Maggie was very helpful along with my sister (Catherine) who both helped me gain a knowledge of tea & gave me a idea of what would be my perfect selection. So I chose chamomile lavender & valerian as it fits my health needs & those 3 are a personal preference of mine when it comes to tea. I also purchased my snap ball tea infuser which I like for mixing my own combinations creating the most perfect teas to fit my preference. After this I have no longer purchased bagged tea at Giant Eagle or Traders Joe. I have been patronizing this tea shop for a few years now and am so grateful for its existence in my community. Formerly Margaret's Fine Imports, Blue Monkey Tea Shop has everything you could ever ask for in this type of store. There are few places where you can choose from such a huge variety of loose leaf teas whether you're looking for traditional black tea blends like Earl grey to light floral greens like Jasmine Green to rare first flush oolongs to aged pu'er. You can find it all here along with a friendly staff to help you discover your newest favorite morning pick me up. They also sell fun items such as local honey, lemon curd, and British tea biscuits. Then there's the large array of tea infusers ranging from the adorable to refined. Truly anything you'd want to accompany your afternoon tea experience can be found here. Additionally they have a limited selection of coffees and some bulk spices. I have purchased so many gifts here and the receiver is always enchanted by the unique finds. They also offer classes on tea tasting at various levels. I was fortunate enough to take both the Level 2 class and the special Tea and Chocolate Pairing Class offered for Valentine's Day. The owner of the shop runs these classes and she is just a such a fun character who clearly knows her stuff. Still having some time to kill before the Purim party I headed up to Margaret's fine imports teas. I saw on the door there is a 2nd location in Carnegie. When I went in I inquired about it I learned that it is open and located at 1451 Collier Ave, Carnegie. That information is always helpful for me since I live closer to that location. They were have a 20% off special on all British teas today where you purchased boxed or loose leaf. The shop also sells candy along with some of the most beautiful teapots I had ever seen along with accessories. I asked if they sell any made up and was told no because they don't have the capacity in store to do that. However, I was welcome to smell any jar I found that might interest me. They were also featuring Irish tea and fixings in honor of St. Patrick's day. I finally decided to purchase a spiced apple chai which I understand is one of their best sellers. It comes with real apple pieces in it and sells for $3.99 per 2 ounces. There is a Yelp check in offer for 20% off Sencha loose leaf green tea. The lady at the counter told me she'd have to ask Margaret but that was no longer valid. She did however, give me instructions on how much tea to use for my cup and when I got home brewed a cup. As someone who has liked tea from a early age I was in the area for dinner and stumbled upon this place. The lady who owns it was really nice and gave me a tour of how she has it set up. Very easy to find what you are looking for and smell the different teas. Before I went here I used bag tea for all my tea. After visiting here I used loose tea and keep a bunch of different types on hand. My suggestion is to grab a few oz of Cinderella tea and Garden Palace tea. I love tea and walked into tea heaven. What an assortment of tea and accessories! I finally browsed in over the weekend and I was amazed. For a small space, the variety of teas can seem overwhelming upon walking in. It was somewhat crowded on Saturday, late afternoon. I was greeted upon entering and another associate asked if I needed help finding anything. I wasn't looking for anything in particular, so the associate provided me with a list of all of the teas offered. A very extensive list. This is actually exciting. I stopped in to pick up a few holiday gifts. I felt comfortable with their COVID precautions of only allowing 3 customers in the store at a time. They've blocked off part of the store, but they're clearly trying to make browsing easier with their window displays and having tea lists front and center. It can seem a bit disorganized at times, but there's usually an employee available to help. Margaret and her employees really know their stuff, so if you have questions it's worth asking them. They also have seasonal/themed custom blends of tea that they make that can be interesting. I've also taken the beginner and advanced tea tasting classes (through groupon deals). They are interesting, but can be quite dull at times. It's difficult to deliver a lecture that is 100% entertaining, but they try. I especially like Margaret's: milk oolong, cream earl grey, jasmine pearls, creme au caramel rooibos, and rose black tea. read more

If you are a tea lover, I cannot stress enough... Take the tea class!!! It was so informative and interesting. The owners are adorable and really knowledgable about their teas. I'm such a nerd about tea, I really learned a lot about the right ways to store tea, the origins of certain varieties of tea and correct ways to even drink the different types of teas. Plus, It wasn't just them talking to you, we also got to ask questions and sample a variety of teas and snacks. The class is $25 and they offer a Level 1 and Level 2 class. I can't wait to go back and take the level 2 class. They even give you a gift bag of tea on your way out! Aside from this, still a stellar store to buy loose leaf, international tea and snacks and even coffee. A MUST for any tea lover! read more

The Good: The employees at Margaret's know their stuff. You can ask them any question about teas and anything related to tea, and they will have an answer. You can get a million different tea infusers, pots, loose leaf or bags of tea, anything. I got my mom a sample boxed tea set from here, and she loved it. One of my infusers is also from here, and it is great. The prices on both of these items were reasonable. The Not So Good: I haven't picked up any loose teas here that I have really liked. I have found the teas to be lacking in flavor. I have followed steeping instructions and no luck. Not a fan of the loose teas so far. The prices are fair, though. I want to like this place because they have a great selection of tea. Though, as a lover of loose black teas I really wish they were better at storing them. The whole store smells intensely like some mishmash of caramels, fruits and other ambiguous sweet things. Unflavored teas are subtle and easily ruined by being exposed to strong smells like that. The black tea I bought there tastes like things it's not supposed to after being in the store. I knew that would happen but (because I wanted the tea) told myself I might be wrong and bought it anyway. They're a total triple-threat, hitting everything a good tea shop needs: 1) A well-curated selection of quality teas spanning a broad range of styles, preferences, and price points. 2) Knowledgeable and enthusiastic people in the store who will be glad to help you out. 3) All the stuff (physical and informational) a beginner would need to get started switching from big brand tea bags to loose-leaf delights. And, as a special bonus, they make some of their own tea blends in house, many of which are excellent (the Game of Thrones inspired Dornish Wine Tea makes for an unusual but delicious iced tea when the weather's hot). They also have teas that are great for blending yourself at home (one of my favorite combinations is an Assam tea with a little bit of the rose-flavored black tea sprinkled in). Fantastic little gift shop for tea and coffee lovers! As an avid tea drinker, I was in heaven when I was able to try this place out, thanks to their having a Groupon. I seriously must've spent an hour just smelling all the different teas, coffees, and trying to narrow everything I wanted down to $30! Their tea and kitchen accessories are absolutely adorable as well (though being up to my neck in tea paraphernalia at home, I opted against buying any of those). I wound up selecting a couple looseleaf teas as well as a box of bagged Stash tea (goji green tea - yum!) and a bag of coffee for my beau. Ever since then, I've been addicted and Margaret's is now my regular "tea dealer" for all hard-to-find teas. Be sure to check out their jams and imported foods as well. How lucky we are to have a shop like this! My friend and I were looking for something different to do so we signed up for a tea class. For $15, you get a two hour course discussing the history of tea, different kinds of teas, tea customs, and brewing practices. It was so interesting! There store is just like...a charm on Forbes Ave in Sq Hill. I grew up in Stuttgart Germany (Deutschland!) and I FLIPPED MY SHIZ when I saw they had the Schwarzwaelder Kirch Wasser Kuche I used to adore when I was a litlte Madchen. They have EVERYTHING tea related you could possibly imagine. Honestly, its a shame I didnt discover this place sooner bc I know I would have bought every mothers day gift here. Tea pots, cozies, diffusers, cups, straws, stirrers, bags, bag holders, you name it, they have it. They have a delicious selection of loose leaf teas, and I strongly recommend the Cream Earl Gray flavored tea. It's so good if I made it for breakfast I'd have to call off work bc I'd be DONE for the day, it is that good. I felt the prices were reasonable, and Maggie was very very nice, helpful, and easy to talk to. If you want to try a new tea, stop in, and she'll suggest the perfect one for you. The tea classes are $15 and I thought it was work every penny and a fun way to spend a Wednesday evening. They also have beautiful teapots, and various herbal and floral teas. The woman at the counter is always very nice and willing to help out with any questions I have. This store is like a dream come true for a tea drinker. Though they sell a lot of cool trinkets and accessories for acceptable prices, Tea is the #1 reason to go here. When I stopped by, they were sampling two unsweetened iced teas, one Assam and one fruity tangy tisane. My wife liked the tisane and I loved the Assam. The loose teas for sale are out in translucent jars (they keep the bulk wrapped up near the back) through which you can view them and ask for a.. um, sniffing. They're not behind some unreachable counter - you can inspect to your heart's content. Their selection was nothing to sneer at, though a bit lacking in Japanese Green Teas. They even have some very hard to find teas which I've heard of but never seen in a retail shop. I immediately snatched two of these fabled teas (QuanZhou milk oolong, Huang Shan Huang Ya) which they allow you to buy a single ounce of - almost unheard of in a retail tea shop. Even picked up a weird tibetan mini tuo-cha tea cake for $1.50. Though I get a little unnerved with glass jars, the leaves I bought smelled VERY fresh and delicious. I suggest that you bring your tea canisters (or buy some for ~3-5$) or you may go home like I did with ziploc bags. The sales clerk that I met was also knowledgable about tea in general and was able to answer most of the questions I had about their selection. Time flows so differently on a Monday... i'm a tea lover...i drink tea almost every single day...this is the Frist tea shop iv been to while i was in Pittsburgh... the idea of a 'fine import tea shop" already makes me want to just check this place out just because... they sell Tea (or coffee for that matter) has a very low mark-up percentage and you need to sell a lot to get a little....as a customer my experience here wasn't all that good... i felt like this lace was a hot mess... i wasn't sure what was what... the women that worked there looked really busy so i just left without even figuring out what this place had to offer... however the experience of entering a store...smelling fresh ground tea was nice... read more

Shops like this are disappearing and i'm so happy to have found one here. If you're looking for hard to find Torani syrups, they have a big selection of them here too. It's a great place for gifts as well if you have friends that really enjoy good teas and coffees, as well as all the fun little things related (sugar spoons, honeys, cute teacups and pots, biscuits). I typically buy a quarter pound of a few coffees every few weeks now; it's more expensive of course (slightly) than buying a larger bag of grounds at the grocery, but the coffee is fresher and tastier. read more

Margaret's is one of my favorite stores in Sq Hill. However, today's experience soured my view. I purchased honey sticks that were crystallized. I brought them back for a store credit and got a hard time from a young woman telling me that's what happens to honey. This is true, but I have never purchased new honey that was like this. They ended up giving me a store credit. In the past I've brought back caramels that I didn't like the taste of. I didn't ask for a credit or refund, only to give them back. It's not their fault that I didn't like the taste. The same woman to offered me a refund several times that I refused. I'm confused, disappointed, and aggravated. read more

What a great little store! I can't believe I've lived in SqHill for nearly 3 years, and I just went into this place (courtesy of Groupon) last weekend. We've been wanting a very particular stove top coffee maker for a while now, and Margaret's had it for 20 bucks. She's also got, as the name implies, lots of loose teas to choose from and various European sweets, cheeses, drinks, and even beauty items. The gem for us, though, was the coffee. Not only did we find the coffee maker we wanted, but got some fantastic coffee. Tastes great, and a little dab 'ill do ya. Seriously, I've been so super productive this week mainly due to this coffee! The service is fantastic, and the prices are right, so swing in and support this local business! read more

Sadly, I think this shop ends up with a high rating because there isn't anything better in the area. But, it really doesn't deserve anything more than 3 stars. It has a nice selection. But, it's a gross-looking store. The carpet is questionable. There is a mish mash of shelving that makes you think it was picked up off the street as the owners needed new pieces. Extra tea is stored in plastic bins right under the exposed product, which again is in a mish mash of containers. To boot, when I went, the sales attendant couldn't figure out how to bag a loose tea, she fit the store in terms of being questionably clean, and the cash register was down. If this store was gutted, cleaned, refurnished, and well-organized, it would deserve 5 stars and could be a gem. But, a good selection doesn't compensate for an environment that makes you question the overall sanitary conditions. read more
