This was my second visit to Sushi Kuchi in Carlsbad, and while the food was once again excellent, the service unfortunately wasn't on the same level as my first experience. We started with edamame and miso soup, followed by the Pink Roll and my returning favorite, the Vegas Roll. The Pink Roll was fresh and flavorful, with spicy tuna and cucumber topped with salmon, avocado, and spicy mayo. The Vegas Roll was just as good as I remembered, salmon, crab, avocado, and cream cheese, deep-fried and finished with eel sauce and spicy mayo. There's a reason I ordered it again, and recommend it to anyone going. Unfortunately, customer service was noticeably lacking. We honestly couldn't tell you who our server was. Four different employees seated us, took our order, brought the food, and eventually brought water. Nobody checked on us during the meal or asked if we wanted anything to drink. I finally had to flag down a random waitress just to get water, which was never refilled. Overall, the restaurant was pretty good. The fish we ordered (sashimi) had decently thick cuts. The taste was okay - not the freshest but not bad. The California roll was good! Rice was soft and avocado was delicious - my toddler loved it. The udon (shrimp) was kind of strangely saucy and soft to me. It was a pick up order and the service was very fast. This was honestly hard to eat since each bite left you with an oozing of oil. View the picture provided- there is literally a mini puddle within the cracks of the layered veggies. The chicken & beef teriyaki was good. Meats were cooked well and sauce was tasty. Overall, I'd consider this as basic but definitely good. The veggie tempura udon had the same issues with the battered & deep fried vegetables. This too was extremely oily and went in the trash. The udon and broth, however, was AMAAAAAZING!! Flavors were delicious, broth was flavorful, and the noodles were chewy/bouncy! Ugh, I'd kill for another serving of this now. CA roll was good, not great. Thank goodness this dish came with a discount because paying listed $16 was not justified. Again, I found things to be overpriced. Maybe it's just the area but given the quality and food received, things just didn't add up. 3 stars overall for Sushi Kuchi. Tonight, I ordered DoorDash Delivery, "(1) Todo Roll with Soy Paper. Side of Spicy Mayo." It was like $28 w/ tip and delivery! I got a plastic box w/ a pretty unimpressive roll, no wasabi or ginger and no spicy mayo. The Todo Roll used to be piled high w/ Beets and Onions....there were barely any beets! They also changed their Soy Paper to Pink instead of Yellow....not sure if that changed the flavor too!?!?!?! It was just kinda "blah" w/ out all the fixin's! I called and told them and all they offered was to make a note on my account for future orders. Bummer, but I think I may be looking for a new fave sushi place around Carlsbad/Encinitas. It's located in a smaller plaza, but you can always park near the bank because parking can be tight. We came around 6pm, and beat a crowd of people lining up out the door to enter - they also do have outside seating if you don't mind that. They give you free ice cream green tea tempura for your bday month. They sing to you if you want them to, but I wasn't feeling it that day so I chose not to do it. My wife and I came here today, usually she gets the tofu soup and I get the Babimba, which both are kind of awesome. Because it's New Year's Day wanted to do something different and News so I got the scallop roll and the spider roll. The spider roll is actually kind of good, but the scallop roll had barely any scallop in it. It was mostly California roll, little disappointing. But my wife got the tofu seafood soup. And I was cleaning the shell off the shrimp for her and when I did, I discovered what you see in the pictures a full line of poop all the way down the back of the shrimp. It was really gross. Also, I noticed before that the muscles had not been cleaned on the outside, it still had the moss or seaweed on it, which I thought was kind of gross, but to see the poop still inside the cooked shrimp that my wife was about to eat was more that I could take. So I have to talk to the manager and the waitress came over to me and I complained about it and she said I'll tell them about it. And that's when I found out she wasn't the manager. I usually don't like to give a hard time to the weight staff. Because I find that to be annoying. There's nothing they can really do about it. That's why I talk to the manager, but no manager today, I should've known better, it was New Year's Day. But enjoy the pictures and I would suggest not getting in the seafood until they figure out how to devein a shrimp before they cook it. I'll tell you what really annoyed me was the waitress said, as an excuse for it, not being cleaned,"we buy it frozen" I guess that got my back up meaning that an annoying me so much that she felt that frozen shrimp cannot be cleaned. But you do have to thaw shrimp before you cook it once you thought as you can see from the 30 second YouTube it only takes a few moments to clean a shrimp where you're not serving people their poop when you give them seafood soup.
