Exceptional customer service. We have been here twice now. The first time we ordered the panko oysters, spicy miso ramen, and spicy beef ramen. The panko oysters were delicious and very memorable. They came out crispy and hot. When you bite into them, they are juicy as heck! The sauce that it came with was delicious. The ramens came out and I had never had beef ramen before, and to my surprise it was delicious. It reminded me of an udon dish that I had while I was in Las Vegas. Our second visit was today. And today was especially memorable. We came in about 1pm. My fiance and I asked if we could sit at a booth since it wasn't super busy and our server said sure. We ordered the curry with chicken katsu and the spicy beef ramen with extra noodles. When our order came out, we got the curry but we also got the spicy miso ramen. I let our server know that I ordered the spicy beef ramen. He apologized and said he'd be right back. Since he couldn't take the order back to the kitchen, he said we could take the spicy miso ramen to go or nibble on it while we wait for the spicy beef ramen. (We were hesitant on eating the ramen since we didn't know if we were gonna be charged for it. ) Minutes later the spicy beef ramen comes out piping hot (which I love love love hot food) and as delicious as I remember. I finished eating and then we asked for the check and for to go boxes. To our surprise, our server did not charge us for the wrong order AND he gave us a coupon ($11) for our next bowl of ramen!! Let me start by saying that the sushi is awesome! Always fresh and always delicious. The reason for the low rating is the payment issue. DO NOT use a credit or debit card at this restaurant! They will always take out more than what you leave on the receipt. First time it happened I thought maybe it was an innocent mistake. Second time I had forgotten about it and it happened AGAIN. Third time?!? Lets just say that I have learned my lesson. I always leave a 15-20% tip and for them to take it upon themselves to add more is ridiculous and wrong. Not to mention probably illegal. I'm not gonna pretend I'm some kind expert or connoisseur of ramen, but for what it's worth, I have been to Tokyo and enjoyed some very fine ramen there. I've been chasing that ramen experience ever since, and aside from one place in Chicago, I've had a number of disappointments. It seemed the local ramen joints just weren't quite up to standard. I ordered the delmar ramen at blue ocean and was very pleased. The broth was complex enough for me to notice and the taste was fantastic. Also, the noodles were perfect. This is huge. It's been my experience that midwestern ramen seems to do a nice job of making an excellent broth but then falters when it comes to the noodles. You would think the noodles would be the easier part, right? Again, I'm no expert so perhaps it's a much for nuanced and complex process than I know. But blue ocean nailed it, they really did. Very hip and modern atmosphere here, to be honest I had heard some mixed reviews of this place and I was in the area so I decided to give it a go. The Cardinal roll was by FAR my FAV so good, I would come back for it and it's what I'm thinking about right now. The fish could have been a little fresher, but the taste of the sauces together really made this roll for me. The spicy crab and cream cheese made the most perfect, almost plush, experience in my mouth. I like a little bit of sweetness in my rolls so this was right up my alley. Also notable good rolls would be the TNT and the Shanghai, I didn't have these personally but my peers seemed to have enjoyed them very much! read more

Been there couple times. Food was always ok but our friends like that place so we go there sometimes. This time we went there on NYE later afternoon, store wasn't busy. HOWEVER after we finished our meals, we found our checks were aromatically charged 20% tips. We mentioned to our waiter NOOK but he only went: oh cus you have a big party. That's ridiculous, there's only 5 of us! Luckily for him, our friends are all really passive, we didn't want to make it a big deal and ruined their good mood celebrating NYE. The first time we went there was for the dinner sushi buffet. We all ordered level 2 and the sushi wasn't bad but it wasn't amazing either. The service was also insanely slow when we went that weekend, but our server was pretty fun and reminded me of the 1800-collect guy. Since it was a sushi buffet and also on the pricey side, my group decided to be in competition mode with each other (worst idea ever) and ate a shitload of sushi, and by the end we just wanted to puke at the sight of more rolls. I remember walking back with my friends that night in swollen pain because we were being so fat at Blue Ocean, and with every excruciating step we took we swore we'd never go back to Blue Ocean Sushi again because we were so disgusted with the thought of sushi and ourselves at that point. My 4-month-old food baby finally aborted itself when I woke up the next morning. The evil craving for sushi was bound to come back to us sooner or later. They don't have sushi buffet on weekends anymore (I guess it's good they're in a way forcing some control on us so we don't feel tempted to eat ourselves to death every weekend). My Blue Ocean crew had some time yesterday so we went back last night and ordered level 2 again. This time we learned not to compete with each other on how much we ate. I had half as much sushi as I did last time, and was able to actually enjoy my sushi rolls a lot more. However, we also didn't get our money's worth for the buffet this time since we could've just ordered everything from the order menu and paid the same amount. We ditched another sushi place to come here for my birthday celebration and I'm so glad we did! The food was great, from the dumplings to the Cardinal roll to the premium individual sushi pieces we got. The drink menu is huge and the drinks were tasty and cute. And when I told them we were celebrating my birthday they hooked me UP. I got free sake and a birthday roll! The bartender was very nice. I'd love to come again. My one critique might be that I hope next time they have then non-alcoholic cocktail menu up and running for the non-drinkers. So the price for the buffet is a little deceiving. I saw "All you can eat sushi for $20.99 for dinner" and I thought 'Wow. What a great deal." But actually, they have 3 levels that you can choose from and the prices go up depending on what level you choose. Level 1 is $20.99 but has basic rolls and some appetizers. Most of the specialty rolls (including rainbow and spider, etc.) are in Level 3 and cost $30.99 for dinner. It's still a good price if you get mostly specialty rolls since if you buy them separately, it would definitely cost most, but still deceiving since most buffets are one price for dinner. Also, the buffet is only Monday through Thursday. FYI, the buffet isn't one where the rolls are premade and you go up and choose from the bunch. You place your order with the waiter and they bring it out to you when it's made, which means that that rolls are fresh. I had read reviews that the service is slow at peak times so we went in for an early dinner. When we went, there was only one other person in the restaurant so the service was pretty fast. But the place started to fill up as we were wrapping up our meal so I can see how the wait can get long since when we were there was only 1 sushi chef and someone helping with the toppings/sauces. The place itself was very cute and the waiter and the girl helping with the sushi were very friendly. As for the food, the rolls were some of the best that I've had. My friend and I were saying 'This roll is REALLY good.' after each one that we tried! The sushi and the veggies in the rolls were very fresh- especially the avocado! I can't remember what all the rolls were but we ate a lot of the rolls in Level 3 and they were all very delicious. The ones that stand out in my memory are the AK47, Sunrise, Blue O and Cheeseburger (I was a bit skeptical about a Cheeseburger roll because it kinda sounded gross- sushi and cheeseburgers don't seem like they mix. But we couldn't get over how the Cheeseburger tasted just like a cheeseburger and it was actually really good!) When we were finished eating, the waiter brought over a La Flama Blanca Roll and asked if we wanted it. He cautioned us that the chef had made it extra spicy because he accidentally put extra sauce on it. The AK-47 was listed with 2 bombs in hotness and it wasn't hot at all, but the La Flama Blanca Roll was listed as 3 and let me tell you, I'm not sure if it's because it's the spiciest roll on the menu or because of the extra hot sauce but that roll was SPIC-Y!!!! I couldn't eat more than 3 of the rolls because it was so spicy! It seriously was too spicy to enjoy- I can't even remember what else was in the roll. All I can remember is that it was hot! Blue Ocean is a sushi restaurant first and foremost. While they have other options on the menu, you'll have a very had time eating here if seafood doesn't agree with you. If it does, you'll be hard pressed to find better sushi in St. Louis. The food in general is flavorful and while no substitute for a trip to Japan, does the job nicely. The walls are plastered with what amounts to a crash course in the history of Japanese animation, which helps it stand out amongst the sea of unique eateries on Delmar Loop. read more

I've had this super strong sushi craving all weekend so I finally got some delivery from Blue Ocean for lunch today. Everything was pretty fast, no issues with my order being correct at all. I was a little disappointed with the size of the rolls (I got a Shrimp Tempura Roll and a Spicy Girl Roll and they were on the small side) but they were both delicious. This place is one of my favorite restaurants in town! Come here for bento box during lunch hours it's affordable and will really fills you up! My favorite thing to order here is the chicken Karaage. I still yet to try their all you can eat sushi. It will be on my next visit. Btw if you get here and find those weird buttons at the back of your seats those are beepers. The inside of this place looks really cool, and it was very clean. However, I would rate this place 2/5 stars because their food is very overpriced and pretty mediocre. We ordered the spicy miso ramen ($13) - noodles were way too soft/soggy. Normally ramen noodles should be a bit chewy. The "pork belly" that comes with the ramen was also disappointing. Don't really have words to describe it but if you've ever had authentic Japanese ramen before you'll know what I mean! Broth was okay. They charge you $1 for an egg as well. I've never had my egg in ramen the way they served it. I'm used to soft boiled but it was more like a poached egg. Portion size was very small. We also got one of the special rolls ($13). Our meal was great and the staff was friendly. The decor is a lot of fun anime scenes. Only thing keeping it from five stars was the pacing of the meal, very disjointed. We placed our drink and food order, waters got delivered to the table and then it seemed awhile before the first part of our meal showed up. Oddly, the first thing to show was the sushi rolls, followed by our drinks, then the miso soup. After awhile longer my sister's entree came but the rest of us were well into the rolls by then. All of the food was delicious and we enjoyed it but the flow of the meal was odd. On to the sushi, we really enjoyed the flaming Take a Chance Roll, and the caterpillar roll the most. We got the Kurt Cobain set to share so we had 7 rolls amongst the three of us and later ordered an additional chefs special. All tasty, I recommend that approach to getting a good variety. The place was pretty jam packed when we arrived but we were seated quickly. Unfortunately they only had one menu available for us to look at when we were seated but that was quickly rectified. We ordered edamame and gyoza for appetizers and some sake. Both were tasty and the sake was delicious and served in the cutest carafe and cups. Great restaurant hubby and I are visiting family while in St Louis and stoped by the loop. Supper happy we did menu is phenomenal. My husband is it a fan of sushi but was able to find something on the menu he fell I love with. The highlight of our night was the two kick ass bartenders who created a custom drink for us. Ryan gave us tips of sites to see and Tai was just a wealth of info on everything, from drinks to restaurants to things to do/ places to see. The food was delicious and my service was OK except for the fact that the beautiful waitress and gracious manners that she had made it worth the trip. This place has a very cool atmosphere. The music, artwork and style was for sure not a typical sushi place. Aside from the ambience of the place, the food was awesome! That's always the most important part of any dining experience in my opinion. There were a few rolls that I've never seen any where else like the ones with crawfish. The Godzilla roll was pretty spicy but the flavors were all working together nicely. The presentation of the food was beautiful and added that little something extra to the whole dining experience. I got a Bento Box with teriyaki chicken & the spicy girl roll; the box also cane with rice, an orange, edamame, and a salad. The food, especially the sushi was phenomenal; however, the teriyaki chicken was not my favorite. The flavors were amazing, but the chicken itself was not very good, so I would recommend getting one of the other chicken options with the Bento Box instead. But underneath the dozens of soy sauce packets, I unpleasantly found a HUGE SMASHED COCKROACH. It was extremely disgusting and I'll never get it again. The cockroaches nor the sushi.
