This place was recommended to me and boy was I not disappointed. It's a small storefront in a shopping center, but opens up on the inside. The hostess and wait staff were incredibly friendly and the home style southern food was excellent. I had the daily special fried chicken and I'd recommend that along with the haystack onions. The only thing that left me disappointed about my lunch at the Blue Rooster was that I was so full that I didn't have room to try their homemade coconut cake. I'll definitely have to come try this place again when I'm back in the area. read more

We thoroughly enjoyed the efforts of the friendly and efficient staff. Grits were the best I've ever tasted! My salad's ingredients were fresh and delicious. The desserts looked divine, but there was no way I could have eaten another bite! BTW ~ if you like baked potatoes, get the Baked potato salad. Our server Deanna was super good (deserves a raise for personality alone!!). It's located within a strip mall, but don't let that fool you!! The atmosphere is homey, the menu offers an eclectic blend of food, and they are some then just like me!!! I was eating lunch today when a woman came in with a cake. A man behind the bar yelled at her across the restaurant to get the food out of there. I could tell she was embarrassed and a waitress came up to her and said something which appeared to calm her down. A few minutes later, I was looking for the restroom and saw the lady in the doorway of an office. Being the nosy person that I am, I stood off to the side, and she was attempting to apologize. Evidently, this man was a manager. He kept yelling at her the whole time. In the meantime, the waitress also walked in the door. I clearly heard him call the lady a b****! I don't care what the rationale was for his rudeness, Neither I nor my family will never again patronize that business! My advice is to stay away! read more

My review is mixed. Friendliness and staff competence get an A+. The front house rocked it. We were in a time crunch, and I cannot EVER remember an in and out of a sit-down restaurant being faster. The onion rings were good... but the ranch dressing was lacking. The BBQ sandwich was en pointe and the sweet potato fries even had cinnamon on top. The fried okra was cooked to perfection. But that fried chicken? It was TOUGH... really, really tough. Must have been an old rooster, lol. I would suggest (perhaps?) another poultry distributor, so you don't get anymore foul fowl. read more

The Sweet Caroline burger is a fave as well as the grilled chicken sandwich. They have a great dessert menu as well with house made cheesecakes! Visited yesterday(12/12/23). Wife just wanted pinto beans and corn bread. I ordered the fried chicken livers(with 2 sides) which were one of the specials. The wife wanted just a bowl of pintos and the server wasn't sure she could do that although it was an oderable side(at $5). The server wasn't sure she could do a bowl. Server came back and said a bowl was doable at $6.99. I ordered the chicken livers(special) but wasn't told the price. I also ordered potato wedges and Cole slaw. My chicken livers were fried quite dark and were subsequently overdone as well as over breaded. They were marginally okay. I took a bite of the Cole slaw and there was something chewy in it. I spit it out into a napkin and it kind of looked like chicken. The potato wedges were good although over salted somewhat. Between the 2 meals our total was over $34! The livers were $18. Fried(not well prepared) for $18. Chicken in the Cole slaw which when pointed out to server she took it back and noted it was prepared near the chicken salad and that was the likely culprit. Bottom line, overpriced southern cooking not prepared well with a surprise in the Cole slaw. I wouldn't recommend this place. Plenty of southern food restaurants in the area that don't try to rob you. I should mention that when I asked for honey mustard for the chicken livers they brought out a small plastic container which they charged me(not noted until ticket brought out) $0.69! Ludicrous. Don't let the strip mall appearance fool you, this is an all around great restaurant. We were a family of 7 + infant visiting for vacation. Unfortunately most restaurants in the area had a 2+ hour wait due to staffing, for a table of 7 on a Tuesday evening. I called ahead to Blue Rooster 15 minutes prior, once arrived, the hostess led us to our table. Service was punctual, friendly, and attentive. The menu has a wide variety of choices to appease all types of appetites. Food was delicious, slightly on the expensive side but competitive with the area. Overall a nice place to enjoy a dinner. read more

Food was good as it usually is. However, portions continue to get smaller and smaller, and price is getting larger and larger. In addition to a $70 meal for two people, there was a mandatory 20 percent tip, and an additional $3.00 for non cash payment. All of which is acceptable in this day in time, but not when one person in the party didn't get their food until all the others were well into their meal, and two people in the party continually had to get up and go to the wait stand to get pitchers of drinks for refills for most at the table. Needless to say, it will be a while, if ever we return here for a meal. read more

What a diamond in the rough! I have lived here two years before I even knew the Blue Rooster existed. While Chef's Table is best in fine dining, Blue Rooster is the best in southern food. Don't let the location fool you (tucked away in a strip shop) this is one of the finest restaurants in the area. In addition to a superb southern menu, there are daily specials (see pic) as well as seasonal specials not on the regular menu. I tried the place for lunch looking for the best burger in WNC. So far, the Blue Rooster is the best. The Robbie Rhea burger with haystack onions was a delight. Thick hand-patted burger, cooked to order with choice of sides. My pick was the fried green tomatoes served with a side of blue cheese dressing. The burger was served with fresh lettuce, (not iceberg) pickles and tomato, plus breaded fried string onion they call haystack onions. I've seen them other places called tobacco onions I was greeted by a host, seated immediately and Amanda was quick to take my order and answer all my questions. My tea glass never dipped below 3/4 full. Excellent service and food. I'll definitely be a regular from now on. read more

Pleasantly surprised with this place. Very cozy dining area and the wait staff was awesome. We nervously dined in during the pandemic but was comfortable right away as I observed everyone wearing masks and being very diligent with cleaning and distancing the diners. We had the chicken and dumplings and it was awesome. Not the traditional type dumplings but delicious. I had steak and a baked potato and the hubs had a burger. Both were great. I didn't give 5 stars because when I pay $30 for a steak I like to have bread with my meal. They didn't serve any bread?? Other than that it was a great meal and a very enjoyable evening out. Our waitress was amazing as was all the staff. We will be back...hopefully I get some bread on the next visit. read more

Despite being seated rather quickly, it took way too long for any server (almost all seemed to be teenaged girls) to even greet me or take a drink order. eventually a mature woman server asked it i had been served and i hadn't. She seemed disappointed, and that made me feel better. Being the only African American in the place made me self-conscious and the initially slow service made me wonder... The atmosphere is homey, lots of ceramics roosters and other knickknacks . the fried green tomato BLT was great (coleslaw, so-so). Sweet tea was tasty and they gave me some to go! The service by the end made up for the slow start. i'd come back for dinner sometime if i could--prime rib sounded tasty!! read more

I was solo on a Thursday night, so I got sat at the bar nearly straightaway, but the dining room was packed and, if I'd brought friends, it would've been a 30 minute wait. I started with soup; tomato bisque this particular night. My expectations were low because the place isn't terribly fancy and is stuck in the very middle of a strip mall. One spoonful, however, and I felt bad that I had such a low, uninformed opinion. It was amazingly good. I could have eaten just that. Unfortunately, I also ordered a small stack of the Haystack Fried Onions. Unfortunate because it was HUGE. Definitely enough to share with two, maybe three more people. The remoulade dipping sauce was rather sweet for my taste, but was still a pretty good complement to the heavily fried onions. They were also very tasty. I opted for the skillet fried chicken with green beans. Mashed potatoes were included. The chicken and potatoes were not as stellar as their predecessors, but still tasty enough for me to finish it off. The green beans, however, provided another surprise. I ordered the green beans as my side as a token nod to my diet, expecting canned green beans with some bacon which I could take a few "healthy" bites of. That was not the case. These were bros, flat style green beans flavored with country ham. See ya, few bites. See ya, diet. Next thing I saw was the bottom of the dish. Crazy. I was ready to burst, but I was already all in, so I opted for dessert, against my better judgment. There were a number of tempting options, but I am a sucker for coconut pie and the bartender told me it was an owner's family recipe. Yep, that was stellar too. Very unique in its own flaky crust. Could probably stand more "coconut flavor" but that's just me who is a coconut fan. Every staff member I interacted with was very friendly, from the hostess, to the bartender, to . . . possibly a manager? who was delightfully warm. I shouldn't eat here again any time soon because I have no self control, but when I'm here again, I'll seek it out. read more

Don't order the "roast turkey special". We just got back to Waynesville from a 10 hr drive and were hungry and tired. Went to grab some dinner. The special sounded like great comfort food. "Thanksgiving in March!!" It was terrible. It was served cold and I had to ask them to microwave it but worse instead of tasting like home cooked I described it to my partner as what you'd fix in your trailer home out of a can. The dressing was almost soup and the turkey tasted like deli meat. Not close to fresh roasted. To give credit where credit due... he had the pork chop dinner and I tasted a bite and that was delicious-- a little salty but that's me--but delicious. read more

After a long day of travel on Valentines Day we were looking for a restaurant in an area we had never been to before so as usual, I opened Yelp. Blue Rooster had great reviews so we decided to give it a try. We put it in the GPS and followed the directions. It was a little further than we thought so When it told me to turn into the shopping center parking lot, I was sure that the GPS and Yelp had failed me and that we were in for a below average dinner. To my surprise, as we got out of the car, there were a lot of people waiting to get in the restaurant. I asked a few of the locals if the food was good. They all gave good reviews so we stayed. When we finally got seated, the service was very FRIENDLY, the food came out quickly and the taste was AMAZING. Well worth the wait! The down home atmosphere with aprons for curtains and mixed matched furniture gave us a warm feeling on a very cold night and the good ole southern charm that said welcome to North Carolina!
