Absolutely -- I'd make it strong but factual, so it sounds credible and makes the issues with the restaurant very clear. Poor Experience Very disappointing experience at J. Arthur's in Maggie Valley, NC. I ordered the $45 filet mignon, which came with a salad and baked potato. When the waitress asked what dressing I wanted, I chose blue cheese, only to be told there was a $2.50 upcharge for it. I've eaten at many restaurants and have never been charged extra for a standard salad dressing like that. My mom ordered a Reuben with fries, my dad had a cheeseburger with fries, my husband had a hamburger steak with a baked potato, and I had the filet with a baked potato. We all drank water. Our bill was over $130, which felt extremely expensive for what we received. The filet itself was good and the salad was just okay, so the food wasn't all bad. Unfortunately, about 30 minutes into our drive home, all four of us began having significant stomach discomfort and needed to find restrooms because our stomachs were hurting so badly. Needless to say, the rest of our trip home was miserable. Between the unexpected upcharges, the price, and especially how sick all four of us felt shortly after leaving, this was a very disappointing experience. We will not be eating at J. Maggie Valley can be touch and go for good food and service but we were pleasantly surprised by J Arthur's. We sat at the bar and Dee was our bartender. She is friendly, honest and gave us great service. Big TV in the bar and they play sports so you can eat and watch football! read more

We're back -- it's just a LOT colder this time! In town again with my wife and MIL, and this is now a must stop when in the Valley. Once again, glad we came! Made a reservation and was able to grab a table by the fireplace. LOVE the fall decor, and can only imagine what Christmas looks like here. Staff are always amazing! I ordered the 10oz ribeye with a baked potato and side salad with ranch (love their ranch dressing!). It was cooked to perfection, and was seasoned so well. The potato was huge, and of course the dinner rolls add so much to the meal! MIL ordered the hamburger steak, clownish comes on the garlic mashed and covered in gravy -- she loved it. My wife got a hamburger and fries (wow, they're tasty!!!), but had to send the burger back because it was well-done and not medium. That was the only hiccup -- and when the new burger came out it was perfect and looked really juicy! I say this is 4.5 stars out of 5. It was nice without all the kids this time, but I did find myself wishing they'd have been there to see the decor and the train of course! read more

We recently ate at J Arthur's in Waynesville and unfortunately it was a very disappointing experience overall. Our waitress was absolutely amazing and the only positive part of the visit. She was kind, attentive, and did her best despite the food issues. The food itself was terrible. The bam bam shrimp had no flavor and was honestly hard to eat. They were already sold out of prime rib by 7 PM, which was frustrating. My kids' chicken fingers were mostly crispy breading with barely any chicken inside, and my son's cheeseburger was so hard it was difficult to even bite into. The only things we enjoyed were the rolls and the packaged butter. If you enjoy flavorful, well-seasoned food, I would honestly save your money and your time. We would not return. Would also like to add my husband and I just got an appetizer and 2 kids meals and 4 drinks and it was pretty pricey at $70. Not worth it at all. read more

Last night was our 38th anniversary and we wanted to enjoy a nice dinner. We made reservations for 6:00 PM since it is an extremely popular establishment and we knew that, on a Friday night, it would be busy. Arriving a few minutes early, the parking lot was full, and people were being told there would be about a 30-minute wait. Since we had a reservation, we were seated soon after arriving. Stephanie introduced herself as our server and we quickly were brought our drinks and a plate of rolls with butter. We had already decided we would have cheese sticks as our appetizers. I can truly say that I have never had better ones! They were piping hot, made with actual mozzarella cheese that stretched like you'd see in a commercial (but never actually is), and served with a bowl of marinara sauce. Soon thereafter we ordered our dinners. My wife had an 8 oz. prime rib, a baked potato, and a side salad. I decided to have their full rack of ribs and also had a potato with a salad. Her prime rib was cooked to medium (as she requested) and it was excellent! It was tender and was served with horse radish. My ribs were tangy, tender, and even though I was given a knife, I easily cut them with my fork as they fell off the bone. Our salads and baked potatoes were delicious accompanied the meal perfectly! We could not have chosen a better restaurant to celebrate our evening. The food was truly without equal, and the portions were quite generous (we needed to get to go containers!). The atmosphere was relaxing and each of the staff members were extremely customer service oriented and professional. I would like to especially thank Stephanie for taking care of us! She was very attentive, and even though J. Arthur's was full, she never let our glasses go empty and checked on us frequently to ensure we did not need anything. J. Arthur's Restaurant is, in my opinion, the premiere dining experience in Maggie Valley and surrounding area. The food is superb. The atmosphere is relaxing and the perfect place to celebrate after a hectic week. The service is outstanding and sets the standard for other restaurants. Christmas dinner... I have been wanting to visit for a while now and this was our first time here. We had 80yo parents and our young kids with us. Christmas here is just magical with that gigantic Christmas tree in the corner next to the fireplace with decorations and the train driving back and forth. Grandpa, an avid train enthusiast, was very happy to visit. We got the mozzarella sticks and my picky boy said he loved them. Trout, gorgonzola steak pasta (a special), chicken Parm, kids burgers and tenders. Everyone was seriously raving about their food. Grandpa said multiple times how good his trout was - so that's impressive, knowing him. The kids burgers were massive - I thought they brought out an adult burger. My kids said it was the best fries they've ever had. As for out to dinner categories with a family including 3 young boys. When we choose to go out for an "I'm tired" dinner we will likely choose Chilis or Sauced in Waynesville. But this is a special, more expensive than Chilis spot that deserves a yearly visit at Christmastime. It was relaxed enough I didn't feel on edge with kids being kids yet rustic and beautiful with such good food. It's not a place I'd choose as just a regular night out, but a special dinner to visit once a year. We might visit the bar area on a date night, without the kids. read more

Great stuff- our server Jennifer was fantastic but a few things... mozz looked amazing and was but gravy/marinara was soooooo sweet. I actually asked for red pepper flakes... some may like that though. Side salads- if you like blue cheese vintage style- you are in luck BUT if you like Italian dressing don't order it - oil and barely any herb or vinegar-- I would suggest to restaurant to have oil and vinegar option to go with the ' style of salad' they serve. One amazing thing I WAS IMPRESSED BY SHRIMP COCKTAIL. Temp on both shrimp and sauce was perfect- not refrigerated all day etc! Perfectly plump etc... I had that for my diiny while other 3 people ordered Ribeye steaks . On to steaks - 2 out of 3 had to send back .... A one hour wait which is ok, you would think that would make you think.. ok good restaurant. Just to be the loudest under staff restaurant in town. Ordered drinks, they barley made it before the meal. Ordered our food, I had a steak....had to wait for a steak knife...a steak knife! Wife ate her food so it wouldn't get cold, I had to send the steak back to be warmed up. Had some kind of light ice sickles flashing in there! The atmosphere did not fit the check. If I'm paying a 160+ check, I would at least hope for a knife, and like to be able to hear my conversation not the one three tables down. I had high hopes, won't be back! read more

In visiting Maggie Valley again we thought we would give J Arthur's a try for a second time knowing our last experience. Since our first encounter the owner, Donna Mahoney, thanked us for letting them know about the incident and indicated that if we decided to return, it would be on them. Well, this year, we did return, we set up a reservation and then I emailed the owner to advise that we would give it another shot. No return reply. And, when we arrived at the restaurant they did not show our reservation. We showed confirmation on our phone and they said that the confirmation was not a reservation. Just a promise of a reservation and we would be notified. My wife indicated that she left a voice mail and no one returned her call either. Luckily our friends arrived and were able to put in their name to get seated. Strike two! The hostess was horrible (not even an apology for their booking services), the server was great once again, and the food was good with the exception of the added shrimp on a salad for $12.99. $12.99 for 4 blackened shrimp. My friend said something about it but they said that is what is served for that price. Yes, that was quite a bit for the small amount given. In the end, we were given our bills. My bill was correct but when it was brought back to run my card, they charged me for someone else's meal! Whaaaa... How did that happen!? I noticed it right away and after a while of waiting they corrected it and we finished. At least no one got sick this time around. First piece of advice - order the cheese sticks!there are 4 very large, very delicious sticks! Cowboy ribeye was delicious! I ordered medium rare and it came a little closer to medium. Only spot medium rare was by the bone. However it was still delicious flavor and I would get it again! The only downside is we were in a group of 8, which I guess means the gratuity was automatically added. They did not tell us that there was a gratuity on the bill. It might be listed on the menu, and we probably missed that. However I feel it should still be mentioned when the bill gets dropped of. No idea what the percentage was. She was a good waitress and she deserved a good tip. But if it was only 18%, we could've tipped more. No idea. read more

J Arthur's has been a staple in Maggie Valley for over 30 years. In fact we watched it being built. The food is consistently wonderful. I have never had a dish that I didn't like. Favorites are the prime rib, the steaks, the chicken parmigiana, and oh... Don't miss those mozzarella sticks for an appetizer! The ambience of the restaurant is very warm and welcoming.
