I stopped by Blue Star Donuts after I arrived at PDX at 8:00 a.m. to pick up a bite and there was nobody in line. There were so many delicious sounding flavors available, but I ultimately ordered a single blueberry bourbon basil flavored donut on their signature brioche. The donut was light, fluffy, and not oily at all. The flavor was as described and very pronounced, and overall, the donut was not too sweet. The last time I had Blue Star Donuts was about ten years ago and I'm happy to report that quality has not gone down: it's still one of the best donuts I've ever had. The only downside is a donut is $5 a piece. You're certainly paying an airport premium for the donuts here. Donut for grownups, except I bought some for my kid sister. Last year I was severely letdown by the hype that is Voodoo. Blue Star definitely made up for it last year. Tried my first blue star donut and fell in love with it. I just expected a good regular donut and I got a new taste experience. The OG with a horchata glaze on the brioche donut is incredible and hard to describe, but yummy covers it. Over the years I've heard of Blue Star Donuts' grown up, less sweet flavors as the foil to Voodoo Doughnuts' fun and sweet flavors. I finally had a chance to try Blue Star at PDX before my flight back to CA. The employee who was working at the register was very nice and knowledgeable about the different flavors. At her recommendation, I got the crème brûlée donut. It cost $6, which is $1.50 more than the Hide & Go Peep donut I got the evening before at Voodoo Doughnuts in SW Portland. Can't say I was *too* surprised because airport food is expensive, lol. I liked the cream filling but the donut had a weird aftertaste. When I arrived around 4 pm, they only had about 6-7 flavors. My partner and I are not fan of cake donuts so for a long time I ignored this store from the time it opened until the time they renovated the airport. I wanted to get my partner something to thank him for all the hard work he had to do while I was out traveling for work. A lot of them are fruit flavors which he's not really into so I picked an OG and a Blueberry Basil (he likes these horrible blueberry muffins he gets free at work). In the Delta (D section) of the Portland airport sits this fantastic donut stand. Having some wait time and spying no customers in line, I determined it was a sign from above that I ought to get donuts and coffee. The smiling young woman at the counter took my order for two donuts (Cherry Berry Cheesecake and Buttermilk Old Fashioned) and an iced mocha. The donuts were quickly boxed and she finished my mocha in a couple minutes. The mocha was strong, chocolately and gave me borderline jitters. The Cherry Berry Cheesecake donut had a cherry and raspberry cream cheese filling and a cherry brandy glaze. It also had some fruit crispies and white chocolate pearls on top, neither of which added flavor but made it visually appealing. The filling was okay...kind of weird actually...I think I liked it? The donut itself was quite good. The Buttermilk Old Fashioned was fantastic. I could eat one every day. It was made with horchata, cinnamon, and vanilla with a buttermilk cake. Came here during an unexpected layover in Portland. Can I just say that with the renovations the Portland airport looks amazing? Following the renovations, it seems like the donuts are made on site -- which adds much freshness to the donuts. Was recommended to get the old fashioned donuts from here by friends/family who passed through this area frequently. They were out of the regular ones, but I got the raspberry and chocolate to bring home (to the family member who made the initial recommendation). I got a matcha crunch donut for myself as well as a matcha. The donut was wonderfully flavored: the matcha frosting on top packs the matcha flavor in without being overwhelming, the almonds add a nice crunch, and the underlying donut is the perfect cake donut texture. The matcha I got without any sweetener, and I thought it was pretty decent! Not the best matcha I've had, but certainly better than I would expect from a donut shop! Well, their mission statement reads they "wish for all our cares to melt away." What actually melted away was this greasy donut when placed in my carry-on bag. Thank goodness I noticed the grease soaked paper bag before slipping it in. I happened to have a small ziploc with me, which saved the contents of my bag. When I brought the donut out in mid-flight, the paper bag had completely soaked through, creating a puddle of oil in the bottom of the ziploc. I kid you not. Completely inedible. My friend loves these donuts so much that they considered flying to Portland to pick up donuts at the airport for their wedding in New Mexico. They realized that they should probably make sure that they arrive at their own wedding on time and not take the risk of flight delays. So I had to wait to move to Portland before I got to try them. We got six kinds to try: Maple Glazed: the brioche dough was a delightfully unique flavor (just a hint, more sweet than a normal doughnut, but not too sweet in my opinion). I loved the soft fluffy texture of the donut and the glaze was like a soft silk robe: luxurious. The O.G. (Orxata Glaze): simply perfect. See Maple Glazed. Honey Lavender: I really loved it. Just a little extra tang. See Maple glazed. Orange Olive Oil Cake: even more perfect. It had a nice dense donut that wasn't too greasy or too dry and the light orange flavor had a delightful aftertaste that kept the joy going. Lemon & Lime Curd: good, but although the curd was yummy tasting and super citrus flavored, it was pretty runny and the consistency kind of turned me off. Lemon Poppy Old Fashioned: I was disappointed that it was just too greasy. I was so excited to try these donuts. I know the airport experience is different so I will try another location and update my review if needed. When I walked up I was greeted right away and placed my order and paid, unfortunately I noticed an abrupt change in attitude when I failed to leave a tip. So much so that I felt compelled to mention because I was so thrown back. The donuts were very greasy and chewy. The flavor was fantastic, not too sweet, just the grease was a little congealed and made the donut chewy. The storefront was modern and the store was very clean and organized.
