Donuts and Chai! Say less! Loved everything we ordered! The mini doughnuts were warm, fresh, and packed with flavor. But my absolute favorite was the Bacon Maple Jam--that sweet and savory combo was SO good! And the King & I chai was the perfect pairing. Rich, fragrant, and just the right amount of spice. Definitely a must-try if you're in Portland! They also give a dozen free mini donuts on your actual birthday. I wish I knew this because my wife and i's birthday passed 2 days before we went and they only make exceptions for kids. Regardless, such a cute little spot and totally worth the stop!
I hate to have to downgrade Pip's rating by two stars. I used to like going there. I especially love their birthday deal where anyone can get a dozen cute bite size donuts free. I recalled they used to allow a week to claim the birthday deal. Then they changed it to the day of birthday couple years ago. Now they changed the deal again this year. You can only get either 6 cinnamon sugar and 6 raw honey & sea salt OR 2 of each 6 flavors available. And there is a mandatory $3 tip. First, I absolutely don't like how I can't choose my flavors of donuts. Second, a mandatory tip is the same as a charge but it sounds a lot more nasty. I would have given a tip anyway. I don't appreciate how I was told to give a tip. I likely won't go back there again.
A Portland institution, everyone knows of they can get a free dozen donuts on their birthday here. And you can't just get donuts without getting their delicious chai. Not much else needs to be said that plenty of other reviews before me have already shared with glowing positivity. My first upload of a photo was back in 2016 (I had to double check because I was surprised I never wrote a review!). Still same great taste, still same great vibes.
Pip's donuts is a must-stop every time I'm in Portland, and I make a point to bring every visitor here. My first visit was on my birthday, so I got a free dozen doughnuts - such an amazing deal! The doughnuts are the perfect bite size, making it easy to sample a variety of flavors. I also love that they're more old-fashioned cake-style than light, yeasty doughnuts. My favorite flavor is the Raw Honey & Sea Salt. The flaky sea salt perfectly balances the sweetness. They rotate flavors often, but Raw Honey & Sea Salt and Cinnamon Sugar are always available. The chai flavors are also excellent, especially the King & I, inspired by Thai pandan tea. It's warm, lightly spiced, and packed with flavor. Consistently delicious, fun seasonal flavors, and always worth the stop. One of my favorite donut shops, hands down.
Pip's one of those places that makes Portland feel like Portland. This beloved local institution has earned their reputation through their delicious donuts, but also a commitment to community over competition. They offer both donuts and chai. For me, the star of the show is the donuts. These delectable morsels are crafted in front of you so they come out fresh and hot. There are a variety of flavors and I've heard whispers of a secret menu... Check their Instagram for more info there. While I do gravitate towards the donuts first, I know they are also famous for their chai. So if you are a chai fan don't skip that option here. I just had a chance to interact with their mobile food truck at an event, which was such a fun aspect to the overall event. I got a quad of donuts and a chocolatey chai! Also I will say this: Pip's offers a free birthday dozen, which is incredibly generous gift. My birthday falls around the holidays so I usually can't make it in, but I want to be clear that I have absolutely zero complaints about that. Adults, especially, should never grumble about not receiving a generous freebie. The fact that they offer it at all speaks volumes about the kind of business they are!

The flavors available when we went were: cinnamon sugar, raw honey and sea salt, brownie batter, bacon maple jam, fresh raspberry, and vanilla bean cheesecake. Their flavors rotate so be sure to check their social media for the latest flavors. The staff are always friendly whenever we drop by. Just a heads up there is a mandatory $3 tip if you just get the birthday dozen without purchasing anything else which is very fair.
Portland trip pt II featuring Pip's. Boyfriend and I visited Pip's before our flight back to LA. We've had pretty much every popular sugary and carby donut that Portland has to offer. A friend of mine recommended Pip's for their bite sized donuts and chai. We came at a right time by waking up early enough to beat the crowd. Service was pretty solid here and the menu is easy to read. Upon seating, they made a whoopsie by giving me a heated chai, but I can overlook that since they gave us an extra donut :) We got brownie butter, cinnamon sugar, and raw honey + salt to share. I got the King and I (made dirty) for my own because I love pandan. They put a lot of care into their product and it definitely shows. Chai was spectacular and donuts were delicious. I'm returning!
Who doesn't like hot and fresh doughnuts! Especially mini ones! These were so good! Love mini ones, cuz you can sample more than one flavor! This is a popular place! Plus, on your actual birthday, you get a dozen free! Wow, that is generous! Definite must try if you are in the area!
Lived up to the hype. Every donut was delicious and I love that they make them to order so you don't get anything stale. My recommendation for first timers is to try every flavor. There was just the two of us and we got 12 donuts. Enough for both to enjoy as they are sized big enough for two bites. The chai was really good as well but I would come here again for the donuts.

The staff was incredibly kind and even threw in an extra cinnamon sugar donut for us. Their current flavors include cinnamon sugar, coconut cream, raw honey and sea salt, brownie batter, mango jam, and bacon maple jam. Everything is made fresh to order, which makes a big difference. My favorite was the coconut cream, with the bacon maple jam coming in a close second. Overall, the donuts were excellent. They also offer a free dozen if it's your birthday. Definitely worth a visit, you won't be disappointed.
I want to thank Pip's for their very generous birthday offer. Growing up with a summer birthday was never easy. Watching, what felt like, every kid get to celebrate their birthday with classmates and having fun school year birthdays was always so hard because my birthday was in the summer. I went to Pip's today to get my birthday gift and stayed to eat in. It felt like childhood to be able to look around at so many other people celebrating. We were all wishing each other a happy birthday. While it was a room filled with strangers, for a moment, we all felt like friends.

This was my first time at Pip's after hearing so many great things, and it definitely lived up to the hype! We came on a Saturday about 40 minutes before closing and had about a 10-15 minute wait. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. I'm usually not a huge donut person, but I really enjoyed the smaller size of these. It made it easy to try several different flavors without feeling like it was too much, and I loved the variety. I also tried their chai matcha special and really enjoyed it! I will definitely bring friends or family who are visiting to try these out! read more
Still tasty & unique for being a "made-to-order" mini-donut shop. And one of the few businesses that offer a "freebie" for your birthday. But pls note that there are new caveats on this "freebie" now. The choices for the freebie are more limited. But more significantly, the "freebie" requires a MANDATORY $3 tip/gratuity (basically, a fee or a charge). For those coming from afar, the trip might not be worthwhile. Still, kudos for being one of the few businesses that have a birthday special (no longer "freebie"). read more

This is a cute self-service coffee shop with some indoor seating. You order at the counter and they call your name when it's ready. We ordered the caramel apple cider (sweet and iced), the smokey mountain chai (hot), and a variety of their donuts. The drinks were good and my favorite donut was the raw honey & sea salt flavor. The person who took my order was very kind and friendly. Overall, it's a tad pricey but worth the visit! read more

Pips has brought joy for many years! Yesterday was my wife's birthday, so we made the birthday-dozen-trip! As always, the space is warm and welcoming (and it smelled amazing), the staff were incredible, and the donuts NEVER MISS. They are so perfect. Coconut Cream and Pineapple Lime were AMAZING. KEEP IN MIND: the birthday dozen is only for the actual day of the birthday. This year was special because we were able to make it! BE KIND! 8 Doughnuts ($10.95) - I loved how perfectly fried and fluffy these doughnuts were. All of the flavors were amazing but my favorites were Strawberry Rhubarb, Pancake, and Cinnamon Sugar. read more

I don't know why I haven't reviewed this place yet. I've been coming since it first opened and still have an old Pip's Army loyalty card to prove it! Oh my... one of the best places in Portland and I bring all my out of town guests here. Parking is a bit rough as it's all street parking but if you're patient you can eventually find something. I still mourn the Beaverton location, but at least the original is still around. Firstly, everyone you meet here is amazing... from the owner that literally still comes in and washes dishes, to the counter staff and the cooks. Secondly,their donuts are really more like mini pastries....a slight crisp on the outside and inside is a denser almost cake inside. Fresh out of the fryer and you have to eat them hot! Ask for the Reggie Lee (Dirty Wu), which is salt, Nutella and cinnamon from their secret menu. Thirdly, their Chai is amazing and my favorite is Japanese garden (Chai and lavender and matcha). Fourth, the free Birthday dozen is one of the most generous gifts in Portland! Please support this amazing business! It is only good on their actual birthday! Came from out of town with two other friends and one of those friends was adamant that we come here for doughnuts. We stopped by on a rainy Sunday morning and found parking right across the street. There was a line but it luckily didn't go out the door so we were able to wait inside and out of the rain. All the seating was taken when we arrived but we were able to grab a table when a group left while we were waiting to order. They have 6 flavors of doughnuts at any given time and I believe two of them are rotating seasonal flavors that change from time to time. We ordered a set of 6 and a set of 12 for a total of 18 doughnuts so that each of us could try one of every flavor. We also ordered a hot chai. The cashier helping us was so friendly and asked us about our day. We told her we were going to Powell's and she told us they were having a sale just for that weekend which was so nice! After we ordered, we sat at our table to wait for our name to be called. There's a bit of a wait since they're made fresh and to order. The doughnuts are small and can be eaten in one bite. The flavors for the day were cinnamon sugar, honey & sea salt, nutella, bacon maple jam, key lime (seasonal) and passionfruit (seasonal). The doughnut itself is the same for all the flavors, the toppings are what's different, but the doughnuts are amazing. They remind me of a hot and fresh funnel cake. All the toppings were good but the honey & sea salt stood out the most. I would get a dozen of that flavor just for myself. Definitely recommend giving this place a try! read more

We made our way to Pip's Original Doughnuts & Chai while visiting Portland. This location felt a little out of the way from the city, at least to us, but we wanted to check it out to see what all the hype was about. There was a line when we arrived, but it moved fairly quickly. The donuts were pretty good--not mind-blowing, but definitely enjoyable, and I'm glad we tried them. The chai was good, which makes sense given that it's what they're known for. I also ordered the Smokey Robinson Chai. Overall, I'm happy we stopped by and made the trip so we could say we visited. It was a fun experience, even if it didn't completely live up to the hype. read more
Portland is expensive! This place kind of expensive. I was really looking forward to having the flight until I saw it. It was $20 now. Yikes ! Ordered two out of the four chives that I wanted to try which came out to be around 14 bucks so I didn't really have enough for donuts lol I got the hot masala style chai that is also made with Thai chili as well as an iced Thai tea style chai which was the cashiers favorite/his personal recommendations. I think I had to add a little agave to the Thai tea but overall I was happy. The masala/traditional chai was definitely a lot better than the Thai chai version . I may come back to try the Smokey Robinson and the coconut one iced one day when my bank account recovers. Bathroom was cute clean and a plus . read more
Pip's Original Doughnuts & Chai is such a cute spot--packed with families and very much that total Oregon energy. The doughnuts remind me of an elevated Hostess Donette: small, fluffy, and dangerously easy to keep eating. The flavors are where Pip's really shines. I loved the passion fruit and banana cream are both fun, not overly sweet, and super satisfying. My friend was obsessed with the honey and Nutella combo (I think it's called The Reginald?), which wasn't on the menu that day but was still available and clearly a fan favorite. The bacon maple was hilarious and nostalgic...it straight-up reminded me of a McDonald's breakfast McGriddle in doughnut form (in the best way). And don't skip the chai! it's really good and spice forward, absolutely worth trying if you get the chance. Warm, cozy, and the perfect pairing with the doughnuts. read more
Stopped by to try a few donut flavors and had a great experience overall. Food: Nutella, Honey, and Cinnamon (5/5): Delicious and very fresh. Rich and decadently sweet, but still well balanced and not overwhelming. Eggnog and Custard (4/5): Tasted exactly like eggnog and custard. Smooth, comforting, and enjoyable. Orange and Cranberry (5/5): Really good. The squeeze of jam balanced the donut perfectly and kept the sweetness in check. Service: 4/5. Great and very patient staff, even with long lines and lots of orders. Ambiance: Food court style setup. Lines were long and stretched out the door, but that seemed normal and moved steadily. Overall, fresh donuts with creative flavors and solid service. Definitely worth the wait. read more

Two-bite donuts that are just too cute to eat. Got a variety of raw honey, cinnamon sugar, malted milk and bacon maple jam. They were overall okay and soft with a slight crunch outside. Flavor wise they're all very subtle and nothing too overwhelming. In other words, kinda meh. Some were fried for a few seconds too long. There was a line but moved fast. I did enjoy the ginger chai more than then donuts. The heart of gold chai didn't have much flavor tbh. read more

Flavor (4/5): Would recommend their donuts more than their drinks! I got their lychee matcha drink, both things that I love separately but not together in the way they make it here. The donuts are bit sized and the flavor profile is on point! So dangerous to pop a few of these mindlessly. Instagram Worthy (4/5): Cute spot with an ordering side and a side set up with a few tables. Decorations definitely scream welcome to Oregon! Service (4/5): Friendly cashiers when ordering. Super fun to try a doughnut with various flavors adorned with creamy flavored topping and flakes. I think the chocolate flavored one would be nice with a slightly less sweetened dark chocolate but my daughter loved it. I really enjoyed the coconut and the maple bacon. My daughter and her friend liked the mango. The chai is also something you should try if you decide to stop in. They offer almond and oat milk as alternatives for no additional cost. The service was extremely friendly and eager to take your order and ask about your day! The lines can get long so make sure you have the time to wait and sit to enjoy your order. read more

I thought it was a nice experience, I liked it. It's certainly a place everyone should visit at least once. I was slightly underwhelmed by it, I thought I'd like it more. There was nothing "wrong" but it just didn't fully do it for me (but you should try for yourself). Interior: it was clean, I didn't see anything wrong with inside. There are 2 main areas, the general seating area then the register is in a waiting for area with only 1 small bench, so you're standing there until they call your name. The kitchen looked nice. Food/Service: the woman at the register was helpful and helped create a box combination since it was my first time there. She was nice and seemed willing to help answer any questions/clarify, didn't make me feel like a bother for asking. Price: I don't mind the price, but I could see how others might think it's a bit expensive (21.90 total for 12 donuts and medium chai). read more
Came here on my birthday and didn't realize you get a dozen free donuts!! The staff here is so friendly and the donuts are so delicious!!! The RAW Honey & Sea salt is perfection!! The donuts were made fresh infront of us and even though there was a long line it went by fairly quick. I'm also not a Chai Person but had to order the chai latte and wow the Heart of Gold was amazing!! So flavorful and rich but not too heavy! read more
So I'll be honest... I only come to Pip's annually for my birthday dozen but I keep coming back year after year! They have their typical standard 5 flavors and 6th seasonal so I'm normally getting 2 of each sithmy birthday order. It's extremely easy to eat the dozen mini-donuts on your own, so I'mhappy my family heeded my advice to get their own batch to inhale. Every time I have ordered, the pastries have come out fresh and lightly crispy. They also hold up pretty well as leftovers when I just can't handle as much in the morning. I'm a vedy big chai lover and obsessed with their flavor options that are NOT thr typical over-sweetened Oregon chai many locals have come to ~love~, myself not included. Their chai flavors are well-balanced and focus on the tea plus spices and not additional extra whatever sugar crap. Pip's is a great stop as a local or as someone from out of town. Yes, the line can get long at times although the establishment has mastered their art, kept their menu manageable and, therefore, the line moves well enough. Got greeted and rang up by one the owners who gave my friend and I a free sticker (and a free extra donut) each and let us know about their secret menu options (adding coconut or peanut butter to the donuts, mixing donut toppings and chai flavors). I got the King and I chai, and for donuts got the key lime pie with coconut on top, passion fruit, Nutella, and Nutella with peanut butter. This was the first place I came to after I got off my flight! Ordered an assortment of 6 donuts and a dirty chai. The one taking my order was super nice and friendly. The vibes inside were cozy and spot on and there were lots of people despite it being near closing time. You can choose from a list of donuts which you'd like, but since it was my first time I got one of each type: cinnamon sugar, raw honey and sea salt, brownie batter, bacon maple jam, coconut cream, and mango jam. The cinnamon sugar was my favorite but I'm also a simple gal when it comes to donuts. The donuts are mini and freshly cooked, so we went through these 6 super quickly. For the chai, you can also pick among an assortment but I decided to get the ginger rogers which definitely has a strong ginger kick. If you like ginger, I'd recommend giving it a try. My kid has an egg allergy. Do they have a vegan/egg-free option daily or just sometimes?
Sometimes the toppings on the donuts are vegan but the donuts have egg in the batter and there aren't any vegan options. they do serve vegan chai and other drinks along with homemade sweet granola bars.
Is there a way to call in and pickup the order instead of waiting in line?
They don't take call in orders. Walk in only.
Is Pip's open on thanksgiving morning?
Last year they were open on the 23rd and this year should be the same.

Yes! But only on or 7 days after. Not before.
Can we order chai flights to go?
Yes, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Don't sleep on their ice cream, it's amazing.
Are they open for donuts yet?
I believe yes, to-go only, face masks required, and you can follow them on IG for further updates.

Yes, they actually have vegan doughnuts and they are so very good.
How do you reheat the donuts?
Not sure what's a good way to reheat the donuts. We broiled them in low for two minutes and gave them a crispy taste. They didn't taste as good as a box of fresh ones but it was better than microwaving them.
Can you order for pick up in advance? If so, is there a pick up line?
No, you cannot call in advance nor is there a pickup line. Donuts are made fresh to order, first come first serve. Lines are generally on the weekends
