Flight of Chai (6 oz.) Hot Doughnuts (8): Cinnamon sugar, raw honey, brownie batter, blueberry wild rose, and Bacon maple jam
    Kri O.

Donuts and Chai! Say less! Loved everything we ordered! The mini doughnuts were warm, fresh, and packed with flavor. But my absolute favorite was the Bacon Maple Jam--that sweet and savory combo was SO good! And the King & I chai was the perfect pairing. Rich, fragrant, and just the right amount of spice. Definitely a must-try if you're in Portland! They also give a dozen free mini donuts on your actual birthday. I wish I knew this because my wife and i's birthday passed 2 days before we went and they only make exceptions for kids. Regardless, such a cute little spot and totally worth the stop!

I hate to have to downgrade Pip's rating by two stars. I used to like going there. I especially love their birthday deal where anyone can get a dozen cute bite size donuts free. I recalled they used to allow a week to claim the birthday deal. Then they changed it to the day of birthday couple years ago. Now they changed the deal again this year. You can only get either 6 cinnamon sugar and 6 raw honey & sea salt OR 2 of each 6 flavors available. And there is a mandatory $3 tip. First, I absolutely don't like how I can't choose my flavors of donuts. Second, a mandatory tip is the same as a charge but it sounds a lot more nasty. I would have given a tip anyway. I don't appreciate how I was told to give a tip. I likely won't go back there again.

A Portland institution, everyone knows of they can get a free dozen donuts on their birthday here. And you can't just get donuts without getting their delicious chai. Not much else needs to be said that plenty of other reviews before me have already shared with glowing positivity. My first upload of a photo was back in 2016 (I had to double check because I was surprised I never wrote a review!). Still same great taste, still same great vibes.

Pip's donuts is a must-stop every time I'm in Portland, and I make a point to bring every visitor here. My first visit was on my birthday, so I got a free dozen doughnuts - such an amazing deal! The doughnuts are the perfect bite size, making it easy to sample a variety of flavors. I also love that they're more old-fashioned cake-style than light, yeasty doughnuts. My favorite flavor is the Raw Honey & Sea Salt. The flaky sea salt perfectly balances the sweetness. They rotate flavors often, but Raw Honey & Sea Salt and Cinnamon Sugar are always available. The chai flavors are also excellent, especially the King & I, inspired by Thai pandan tea. It's warm, lightly spiced, and packed with flavor. Consistently delicious, fun seasonal flavors, and always worth the stop. One of my favorite donut shops, hands down.

Pip's one of those places that makes Portland feel like Portland. This beloved local institution has earned their reputation through their delicious donuts, but also a commitment to community over competition. They offer both donuts and chai. For me, the star of the show is the donuts. These delectable morsels are crafted in front of you so they come out fresh and hot. There are a variety of flavors and I've heard whispers of a secret menu... Check their Instagram for more info there. While I do gravitate towards the donuts first, I know they are also famous for their chai. So if you are a chai fan don't skip that option here. I just had a chance to interact with their mobile food truck at an event, which was such a fun aspect to the overall event. I got a quad of donuts and a chocolatey chai! Also I will say this: Pip's offers a free birthday dozen, which is incredibly generous gift. My birthday falls around the holidays so I usually can't make it in, but I want to be clear that I have absolutely zero complaints about that. Adults, especially, should never grumble about not receiving a generous freebie. The fact that they offer it at all speaks volumes about the kind of business they are!

It has become a tradition to go to Pip's every year for my "birthday dozen". I love their bite sized donuts with all the fun & unique flavors. We decided to go with 2 of each flavor because why not? The flavors available when we went were: cinnamon sugar, raw honey and sea salt, brownie batter, bacon maple jam, fresh raspberry, and vanilla bean cheesecake. Their flavors rotate so be sure to check their social media for the latest flavors. The staff are always friendly whenever we drop by. Just a heads up there is a mandatory $3 tip if you just get the birthday dozen without purchasing anything else which is very fair.

they gave us one extra :)

Portland trip pt II featuring Pip's. Boyfriend and I visited Pip's before our flight back to LA. We've had pretty much every popular sugary and carby donut that Portland has to offer. A friend of mine recommended Pip's for their bite sized donuts and chai. We came at a right time by waking up early enough to beat the crowd. Service was pretty solid here and the menu is easy to read. Upon seating, they made a whoopsie by giving me a heated chai, but I can overlook that since they gave us an extra donut :) We got brownie butter, cinnamon sugar, and raw honey + salt to share. I got the King and I (made dirty) for my own because I love pandan. They put a lot of care into their product and it definitely shows. Chai was spectacular and donuts were delicious. I'm returning!

Hot Doughnuts (8) - They ended giving us an extra one!

Who doesn't like hot and fresh doughnuts! Especially mini ones! These were so good! Love mini ones, cuz you can sample more than one flavor! This is a popular place! Plus, on your actual birthday, you get a dozen free! Wow, that is generous! Definite must try if you are in the area!

    Every flavor is incredible

Lived up to the hype. Every donut was delicious and I love that they make them to order so you don't get anything stale. My recommendation for first timers is to try every flavor. There was just the two of us and we got 12 donuts. Enough for both to enjoy as they are sized big enough for two bites. The chai was really good as well but I would come here again for the donuts.

    Elaine H.

Will always come back for their donuts on my birthday! I always enjoy the diff flavors they have and the crispiness of the donuts. My fav is the bacon and honey & sea salt ones. If you haven't tried it, I would highly recommend! Really nice mornings/afternoon spot to go to.

Dozen minis (clockwise: raw honey & sea salt, cheesecake, cinnamon sugar, raspberry, chocolate, Baconjam) + happy customer.

A must if you are in the area! The aroma of Chai welcomes you as you enter the shop. MiniDonuts were just perfectly sized and delectable...Can't go wrong with getting a dozen...personal favorites were the Cinnamon Sugar, Raw Honey&SeaSalt, and Bacon MapleJam. Just divine with the unlimited House Coffee and "mellow" Heart of Gold . The staff were eager and happy to help with descriptions when selecting from Chai options. Cute decor on walls and kids books were available which seem like an invitation to stay a while longer.

    Karen C.

My friends recommended this spot for mini donuts since we're in Portland, so we decided to check it out. We arrived about half an hour before closing and ordered a set of six mini donuts. The staff was incredibly kind and even threw in an extra cinnamon sugar donut for us. Their current flavors include cinnamon sugar, coconut cream, raw honey and sea salt, brownie batter, mango jam, and bacon maple jam. Everything is made fresh to order, which makes a big difference. My favorite was the coconut cream, with the bacon maple jam coming in a close second. Overall, the donuts were excellent. They also offer a free dozen if it's your birthday. Definitely worth a visit, you won't be disappointed.

I want to thank Pip's for their very generous birthday offer. Growing up with a summer birthday was never easy. Watching, what felt like, every kid get to celebrate their birthday with classmates and having fun school year birthdays was always so hard because my birthday was in the summer. I went to Pip's today to get my birthday gift and stayed to eat in. It felt like childhood to be able to look around at so many other people celebrating. We were all wishing each other a happy birthday. While it was a room filled with strangers, for a moment, we all felt like friends.

Pip's Original Doughnuts & Chai Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Pip's Original Doughnuts & Chai

My kid has an egg allergy. Do they have a vegan/egg-free option daily or just sometimes?

Sometimes the toppings on the donuts are vegan but the donuts have egg in the batter and there aren't any vegan options. they do serve vegan chai and other drinks along with homemade sweet granola bars.

Is there a way to call in and pickup the order instead of waiting in line?

They don't take call in orders. Walk in only.

Is Pip's open on thanksgiving morning?

Last year they were open on the 23rd and this year should be the same.

Are there any allergy friendly donuts for kids with nut allergies?

Their donuts change daily, you would either have to call or stop by and see which donuts they have.

    Highly recommend donuts?

My niece is turning four next weekend. Can she get free bday donuts - even if she doesn't have an id yet?

Kids get free birthday doughnuts too! They don't need to show an ID.

I heard you can get free doughnuts if it's your birthday we just have to present ID. What about for a 7 year old?

I think the free donuts are for 18 and older.

Are they doing takeout Chai Flights yet?

    Yes

Is there any way to petition to get the owners to do delivery? I live far away from pips and do to their limited hours and distance I often don't have time to go there while they are open. Delivery would be really awesome!

Owners Nate and Jamie are always open to suggestions from customers, but given Pips remains really popular and there's a line out the door most of the time, I'm guessing they really don't have the capacity to expand production and accommodate the…

Is the free birthday dozen offered during Covid?

Yes! But only on or 7 days after. Not before.

Can we order chai flights to go?

Yes, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Don't sleep on their ice cream, it's amazing.

Are they open for donuts yet?

I believe yes, to-go only, face masks required, and you can follow them on IG for further updates.

What's the size of the donut? 2" diameter?

    That's about right

When will you be open again?

They are currently open from 8a-2p. There might be changes in festive days.

Do they sell Bottled Orange Juice and if so how much before tax?

On here it says there are vegan options, is this true? If so, do they have an actual vegan doughnut or is the "vegan option" just drinks?

Yes, they actually have vegan doughnuts and they are so very good.

Do you have gluten free/vegan options?

Do you have gluten free doughnuts?

How do you reheat the donuts?

Not sure what's a good way to reheat the donuts. We broiled them in low for two minutes and gave them a crispy taste. They didn't taste as good as a box of fresh ones but it was better than microwaving them.

Can you order for pick up in advance? If so, is there a pick up line?

No, you cannot call in advance nor is there a pickup line. Donuts are made fresh to order, first come first serve. Lines are generally on the weekends

Do they still do the free birthday donuts?

ABSOLUTELY!! Eat in or take out. Choose your variety for the dozen and you're golden!

I couldn't resist so got 4 donuts to myself, one of each version of donut they have. I also asked how well they last after a day. OG: horchata glaze has a slightly floral taste to me. Regular brioche yeast donut. Good simple template. Got stale after a day. Lychee milk tea creme brulee: same yeast but filled. Excellent cream and excellent crispy top. After a day, the top does melt and become less crispy. Peach cobbler cake donut: nice flavor. It is pretty oily as other reviews have said. Texture wise, between the density of the brioche vs old fashioned. They hold up the best after a day; in fact, the employee said that she liked it better after a day and I could see why - the oil perhaps keeps it not stale and fades away a little. Chocolate bergamot old fashioned: my favorite. Just the way I like my old fashioned as crisp fried exterior with an indulgent dense interior. More dense than the cake donuts. The flavor was deep but not too sweet with a glaze. After a day, it wasn't stale but the crispiness faded. They do TGTG and I would totally do this if I lived in Portland.

Walking in less than an hour before closing, we were surprised to see most of the items still in stock! We ended up picking four things to try: Vanilla Bean Kouign Amann ($7) - This pasty has a sweet yet salty exterior that's complementary in flavor rather than clashing. It's accentuated with a crunchy glazed and caramelized sugar layer that's on the sweeter side. The interior is interesting. There's a cavernous gap right in the center that's filled with a sickly sweet melted sugar syrup. It's unpleasantly sweet and very cloying. The puffed and filled area is large enough that it compresses the other layers so the kouign amann is dense. I've never had a kouign amann quite this sweet before. (3/5) Meyer Lemon Olive Oil Cake with Thyme ($5.50) - This cake is so moist and rich, thick and dense, fatty and rich, that it feels like I"m eating a slab of butter. I'm sure it has just as many calories too! It's quite sweet, although not nearly to the level of the kouign amann. Overall, it's just a really rich and decadent cake. (4/5) Blueberry + Vanilla Cream Brioche Donut w/ Earl Grey ($6) - The top of the pastry is dressed with a cream that has an unmistakably strong bergomot earl grey taste. I wish there was way more cream - there's essentially only a dab on top! The rest of the donut is filled with a custardy light blueberry and vanilla jam. It's not too sweet and has an excellent high quality blueberry fragrance, creating an exceptionally strong blueberry taste. The jam is not too thick and is somewhat syrupy from sugar. The donut itself is really soft and extremely airy. It's the fluffiest donut I've eaten in a long time. (5/5) Raspberry Rose Cruffin ($8.50) - This pastry has some fun dehydrated raspberries sprinkled right on top of a light and fluffy cream that's not too sweet. The cruffin base is buttery in taste and great lamination even when filled with the custard and rose/raspberry cream. This is a heavy cruffin that's very filling. Strawberry yuzu funfetti - anything with rainbow sprinkles is kiddo approved but this one is adult approved too! A little on the sweet side with the sprinkles in the donut too, but super fun! 5 stars Chocolate sunbutter - nice alternative to nut butters and mild chocolate flavor. Good chocolate donut all around. 5 stars Pool Boi - loved the creativity with the little gummy bear in the sour gummy ring and the blue raspberry flavor was on point! 5 stars. Passionfruit curd - fantastic tart curd with a classic mochi donut. Yum. 5 stars. Key lime pie - perfect tartness that worked well with the sweetness of everything. 5 stars. Cocoa pebbles - excellent chocolate donut! Could had used more cocoa pebbles. They need to have more chocolate specials! 5 stars. Horchata pudding - lovely cinnamony donut with a tasty horchata pudding. 5 stars. Ube - I wish the Ube flavor was in the donut too. Perhaps the Ube flavor could had been stronger in the glaze? 4.5 stars. Orange cardamom - subtle cardamom flavor but overall tasty donut. Not especially noteworthy flavor. 4.5 stars. Black sesame and jam - I usually love black sesame, but the combination with the jam was not my favorite. It's probably personal preference, but next time I'm going to ask for it without it. 4.5 stars. Strawberries and cream - compared to the strawberry yuzu, this one was a little underwhelming. Adding fresh strawberries with the cream would had been the way to go. 4.5 stars. Guava cheesecake - the Guava flavor was overpowered by the graham cracker flavor on this one. I think a straight Guava one would be amazing. 4 stars. Compared to pon de ring and more traditional mochi donuts, these had more donut characteristics and were much sweeter and less chewy. So glad we discovered this place!
