Stopped in for lunch before heading to Wrightsville Beach. While we were looking at the menu, a man leaving asked if it was our first time there. After answering yes, he suggested the meatloaf sandwich which my brother loved! He got their house made chips on the side and they were AMAZING! This place is a cute little sandwich and brunch place. Their breakfast options were limited, but I wish I got the French toast (or maybe it was waffles?) because it was super picture-worthy. We had a big group of 12 so it was nice they could seat us all so easily without any wait. They have a healthy choice of sides with your sandwiches - salad or fruit or potato salad or chips. The salad had a little oil on it but other than that was kinda tasteless. My friends really enjoyed the turkey avocado sandwich and the breakfast burrito special. Visiting Wilmington for a couple weeks and this was my first breakfast stop. I got the BLT with egg, arugula, and feta on a croissant. It was delicious! I also got a coffee. Decent coffee but the cup was adorable with the map of the world on it. They are all about recycling and don't use straws because of they harm the ocean. Came in on the way to the beach since it was off the coast a little and not as crowded. The Baja shrimp tacos were pretty tasty, but I wasn't a big fan of the bitter greens that came on the side. My friend got the burger (gluten free bread) and fruit. She loved it except that she wasn't given the choice of how she wanted the burger cooked, so it was more done than she normally prefers. Great stop! Indoor and outdoor atmosphere was adorable, exactly I would hope for of a "surf cafe." The staff was amazing, very warm and friendly, and even took the time to answer my questions about a particularly flavorful side dish I enjoyed. I came for lunch around 1:30 on a Tuesday. Not typically a peak lunch rush, but they seemed comfortably busy. I ordered the grilled Mahi tacos- so glad I did!! 2 tacos with a hearty helping of fish and shredded cabbage in each, topped with a flavorful "swell sauce." The tacos were great, but I have to admit, I was really impressed with their accompaniment. They came with a mango radish salad that was TO DIE FOR. I would gladly eat this every day forever and ever. As the staff member who took my order came back around to check on me, I mentioned how amazing it was and asked if he wouldn't mind sharing the ingredients. It seemed pretty simple, but wanted to make sure I didn't forget anything when I try this one at home (I'm not a local). Not only was he was super nice about it, he knew exactly what was in it. Every last component. This, to me, is a great sign of a cohesive staff that knows their business an cares about their food and their customers. Surf's Up for simple college kid fare at Blue Surf. I was genuinely surprised by the amount of positive reviews for such a casual and standard place. My guess is being fast, convenient and consistent right next to campus give it a artificial boost in the ratings department. If Blue Surf was downtown or in Mayfair, given its menu and ambiance, it would have to significantly improve its game just to survive. I have been here 5 or 6 times now at various times and for various meals and have always just found it middle of the road. This is a cafe style restaurant, no real waiters. Just order at the counter and wait. The menu is written in chalk on the massive blackboard above the register as you walk in. The decor is ocean and sand themed, light colors and bench style seating. Dishes are pretty standard for what you would expect at a beach themed cafe, burgers, sandwiches and quesadillas along with chips and tacos make up the majority of the menu. There are no real entree meals but there are typically specials of some kind. It should be noted that they have a decent breakfast menu as well, but there are no real standouts there either. Blue Surf seems to be one of those places that knows what it is and doesn't try to out do itself. No frills, easy to make stuff, mostly for college kids who aren't into a big wait for a decent meal is the M.O here. I can't say I have ever had anything bad, but then again if I was looking for something that takes it a step up as far as restaurants go, Blue Surf wouldn't be on my list. read more

This place does solid brunch/breakfast food (4 stars for food quality and menu options), however, although the drip coffee was fine, it's def not a coffee "cafe" as they don't have an espresso machine. The lunch/dinner menu is diverse (maybe too diverse) as both the burger and fish taco's I've had screamed 'frozen' meat...watery, bland and crumbly fish and extremely dry/overcooked and unseasoned burger. To emphasize this point, my burger was BAD, it almost tasted like a reheated turkey burger. My favorite place to eat in Wilmington!! I used to live in the neighborhood and was in several times a week. The breakfast options are amazing; you can't go wrong with anything. My absolute favorite is a smoked salmon croissant sandwich and when I come to town, I try to make it here by 10am to put in an order for one. For lunch, I love the mahi sandwich. What a disappointment. Ordered the Cali burger with gluten free bread and roasted sweet potatoes. The Cali burger is supposed to have avocado mayo, spring mix, jalapeño relish, and feta cheese. After waiting over 45 minutes for our dinner I was expecting something amazing. Um, no. The sweet potatoes were mushy and cold with absolutely no seasoning, no salt or pepper. The burger was overcooked. It was this dry hockey puck that literally crumbled all over my plate. There was a drop, a single freaking drop, of avocado mayo. The jalapeño relish was tasteless, no spice whatsoever. The saving grace was the drink prices were cheap, our waitress was nice, and the restaurant was clean. We found this gem with Yelp as we neared Wilmington. So the review is to return the favor and raise the rating even more. All the food is fresh, creative and nothing costs more than $9. There's nice outside seating, too. We had two meals here. A lunch with excellent jalapeño infused lemonade, a great brisket sandwich and the shrimp tacos. The brisket tasted like a good bbq joint made it and came on excellent bread. The shrimp tacos were good, but light on shrimp at just three per taco. The mango-radish salad that comes with it was really tasty and beefed up the taco when added on top. We liked the place enough that we had breakfast on our way out of town. The Castro hash over potatoes was very spicy and the homemade ketchup with cumin, honey and sriracha kicked it up more. The ginger peach waffle was cooked perfectly, flaky with a nice dash of ginger. We are so glad we followed the advice of other reviewers and went here on a visit to Wilmington. Don't let pulling into a strip mall with multiple other restaurants fool you... head to the end and go in. You will be transported to a casual, beachy, cool spot with focus on great food, pleasant surroundings and you. Everyone there was helpful, easy going and passionate about their cooking. Started with the hummus... black bean, different and delicious. All the tacos were excellent, the steam bun is absolutely fabulous and the smaller sizes mean you can try several different kinds if you want. The mojo pork entree was perfect with a little mango, sweet rice and If they ask you if you want Chimichurri sauce, say yes. The Mexican hot chocolate was fabulous! I'm on the last night of a week long, cross state trip so I wanted something light, quick and easy. A Yelp reviewer had a Huevos Rancheros-esque meal and that sounded perfect. I came in and was a little shocked that there was exactly one table filled. That was a little disconcerting but the greeter/order taker/ font of knowledge explained they are much busier during the day. I asked for the Huevos meal and was told that's only a breakfast option, and that ended at 12. I get it when the kitchen is slammed, but there were only four people here and they were already eating. I know, first world problem, but it is what it is. I had the MoJo pork tacos and the pineapple rice. The tacos had just enough spice to put a little sweat on a bald head, which was perfect. The pineapple rice wth black bean was wonderful and you can't go wrong with a cold Dos Equis Ambar. The meal was light and yummy. I passed on the offered desert but it sounded great. The tacos were just ok, the meat had more of a bland roast flavor than what I was expecting for the price. My friend said his house burger was ok but not great. Words cannot describe just how good this was. Hubby had the brisket which was the best brisket I've ever tasted and I had the mojo pork.
