Okay, this may be one of the more difficult reviews for me to write. Why? Because Blue Tomato confuses me as much as it delights me! How do you categorize a restaurant that offers a full menu of Mexican food, a full menu of Italian food, a full menu of local fare and American classics, AND why not throw a little Asian food in as well. Now, do all of it VERY WELL, and you have quite the conundrum when you sit down to eat. "What am I in the mood for?" Luckily, you can mix and match to your heart's desire. Garbage nachos and Thai ribs? Sure! Chicken alfredo with a couple of tamales? No prob. A good steak with a Cuban quesadilla? Why not? The possibilities are endless. Now, mix in some killer drinks, and we're talking about somewhere you'll want to bring all your friends who can't decide what they want. It's all there for them, and if they can't find something at Blue Tomato, you might want to reconsider your friends. The service staff at BT is wonderful and homey. I always feel like a local when I eat there. It's comfortable and quaint whether you're eating seared tuna with a margarita or a batch of wings with a Mic Ultra. Lunch is actually my favorite time to visit. Quick service and reasonable prices make this a lunch destination. You might need to ensure you have a refrigerator at work though...the serving portions are generous. So, what are you waiting for? Is it lunchtime yet? read more

This is a "higher class" dive of a diner with a eclectic menu that jumps into multiple ethnic food genres with a selection of Italian then some Mexican along with some classic American and a nice dash of New Orleans dishes thrown in for good measure. The menu certainly goes all over the map with its dishes and that seems to leave some less than excellent execution but generally they pull off "ok" to "very good" food. The service here always seems to be very good and the ambiance is a unique mix that gives it a fun vibe. The burger and lasagna are decent and the Italian and Mexican style food can often be quite nice. The New Orleans food is typically good and they usually have rotating daily specials. Let me start with the service is excellent. You're greeted like family. We started with chips and salsa. The salsa was delicious but the chips were the star. They were thin and crispy with some Cajun seasoning on them. I had the smothered burger special that was so yummy. The Cajun potatoes and gravy with onions were just perfect!! I love this place and they never fail to provide a good meal whether it's from their Mexican side of the menu or the Italian. Their margaritas are to die for and are often on a special. I've noticed the freshness and good quality of the fish in their dishes and am always satisfied with the bean dip and other parts of the appetizer menu. I definitely want to try more items on the menu but I've never taken someone here who didn't love it. read more

It's been well over 10 years since I've been here. I used to come often and it was always busy and good. I was getting tired of the same old same old so the wife and I went to eat. She's never been. She's from the Westbank. The crazy thing about this place is that they offer Italian and Mexican food all the time and they do them both incredibly well. We were craving Mexican. We started with chips and salsa. The chips were freshly fried and hot! I had the 3 enchilada plate with rice and beans. I went with one of each chicken , pork and ground beef. The ground beef was awesome. I wished I'd gotten 3 of them. There's a faint hint of cinnamon I've tasted in Mexican cuisine before and it was really good. Then I tried the pork. Wow!! It was better than the beef. I wished I'd gotten 2 pork and 2 beef now. The chicken was just ok. The last 2 were hard acts to follow. The tables are few but well spaced. I'll go Italian next time and be sure to update. Give this place a try , you won't be disappointed. read more

Quite a strange experience at the Blue Tomato. They bill themselves as a Mexican Italian restaurant. The night we were there they had no pork or guacamole: two pretty big components of a Mexican menu. To add insult to injury, we could smell the ribs smoking, wafting through the restaurant, but couldn't have any yet. Rest of the food was pretty mediocre. I had meatball Parmesan. The tomato sauce was super watery, meatballs just tasted a little off. Queso was meh, first time I've seen yellow cheese in a Queso dip. My friends who were eating with us ordered Mexican, one thought the salsa tasted like it was out of a can because it wasn't very spicy; the other enjoyed it. The server was very friendly. Maybe the restaurant just had an off night. But there are enough other choices in our area that I don't know if I'll put this back in my rotation. read more

Have passed this place hundreds of times and finally decided to give it a try. The menu is widespread with Mexican, BBQ, hamburgers and Italian food. My wife decided to try the shrimp tacos and I ordered the fish tacos. Wow! Both of them were excellent. They both came with rice and beans, which were mediocre. That's okay, the tacos made up for it. I ordered spaghetti and meatballs and a side of salsa. My first thought was, why did these people open a restaurant? If you can't commit to making a sauce (which is some time commitment) then just go to the store and get some pre made. It's actually pretty good what you can get in a jar. the sauce was very under par. The salsa was under that. I sent it back, but both waitresses made a snide comment on how I ruined the spaghetti with the salsa. Like I can't tell the difference between sauce and salsa? Hello? So I got Garbage can nachos. I like the name, it has a sense of humor - and an idea that it has all kind of stuff in it. So what did it have in it? Sour cream, cheese, ground beef, jalapenos - exactly what everyone puts in basic nachos. I will say, they didn't put cheez whiz, it was real cheese. Service: The service is nice and good on refills. Food: I have mixed feelings. The food isn't necessarily bad but it's not restaurant quality of any sort. It's all canned quite literally and it's easy to tell. I guess they don't add much more spices to the dishes than what was already in the can. The prices for me aren't worth it although I understand they are priced that way because they don't actually skimp on meat. It's just I simply do not want to pay for the taste quality. Blue Tomato, located in an old Time Saver building (you can tell from the brickwork outside), serves up big portions of Tex Mex, a few interesting variants such as the house specialty fish tacos, and Italian dishes that can be quite good. They also fix a fine burger. They offer a fairly wide variety of cuisines, though be warned that none are particularly light, and the service is fast and remarkably friendly. It's a nice neighborhood place with a neighborhood feel that would be quite at home on US 90 west of Houston if not for the smattering of competently executed New Orleans specialties. (Unfortunately, they gave up on muffalettas some years ago, but I still remember theirs as an outstanding example for those who like them hot.) Parking can be an issue. read more

My Husband and I wanted to go out for cinco de mayo but didn't want to wait long . We decided to go try the blue tomato. It was a 15 min wait with was not bad. They were out of EVERYTHING when I was there. Their fish tacos were DISGUSTING. But the servers were very nice.

We went there while in the city with my cousin who raved about the place. I think it's better for drinks and apps maybe. Some things were okay. Some were not good. We had a cheese dip, not good. We had fajitas, we could've done the same things at home. Just wasn't what was expected. They had cheese fries and ranch and they said they were good. The chips were good and the salsa was decent. This was my first time here and man was I pleasantly surprised. Everyone was SOOO nice! It was the most welcomed and taken cared of (without being hovered over) that I've felt at a restaurant. Food wise, the ribs were the night's special, so that is what I went for. Half BBQ and half dry (because why not?). These things were flavored just right and we're so tender they definitely fell clean off the bone. The plate included pineapple beans and a crisp slaw. Everything went really well together and had the comfort of home cooking that I like for a mid week meal. This restaurant sits on the corner of Jeff Hwy and Central Ave. At busy times, like lunch and dinner, parking can be tricky. There is an extensive menu, Italian, Mexican and burgers, but I always seem to get the chicken quesadillas. These are my absolute favorite. They are very cheesy and big enough for lunch leftovers the next day. They come with an assortment of toppings. YUM! Big plus-complimentary chips and salsa! Their margarita is delicious and perfect on a hot summer day. The servers are very attentive and friendly. The owner makes rounds to chat and you'll see her frequently helping the wait staff. I was a bit disappointed. I had heard SOOOOO many good things about this place and was excited to try it out. The queso was ok. Nothing too special. Same as my chimichanga. It was ok, just nothing special or something I would have to have again. The place was a divey place. I will say this.......every single worker in there had a smile from ear to ear and loved everything about that restaurant. They were some of the nicest people I've ever met, we even could see the chefs/cooks going to town cooking in the kitchen and they all looked like they were enjoying themselves. The staff were super friendly, so no big complaints about the service. However, I wasn't thrilled with the food. As I'm looking at the menu, I see the window's sign that says "authentic Mexican". So we ordered Mexican food, well it was boring & nothing seemed fresh. I ordered shrimp fajitas, but the shrimp did not come out sizzling on a plate. I'm pretty sure their seafood is frozen & wouldn't be surprised if they used a microwave to cook. And the salsa was odd & tasteless, it's a weird mixture of Mexican salsa meets Italian red sauce. The Spanish rice had no taste at all. And even the guacamole was blah and had no texture. I wouldn't be surprised if it's something they order from a food supply place, instead of making fresh guacamole. I'm not sure why this place has good ratings? I thought the food here was pretty decent, with a thing or two being a little above. My fiancé and I went on a Friday night for dinner. We shared a queso and chips appetizer, I got an enchilada plate and he got a chimichanga. The chips were good, and the queso was average. He felt his chimichanga was average, and wished it had been a little more crisp on the outside. My beef enchilada was excellent! The pork and chicken were good but not nearly as good as the beef. The beans were okay and the rice was on the low flavor side. Overall a decent meal. I would like to come back to try the hamburger! read more
