I learned to ride a bike on BlueBikes! The service was a great way to try out the bikes when I wanted them. I have been using them to commute to the gym now along a bike lane. I often see full or empty docks like the other comments describe. But the density of docks is so high in my area that it never causes an issue. Definitely scan the map before you leave before you ride. There are some differnces between the bike models they offer, but nothing bad. The bikes are definitely heavy, but what would you expect? This service forms a marvelous alternative to the MBTA, or a compliment to it for short hops. Also, most of these commenters need to learn how to dock their bikes or read the clear and straightforward purchase options. read more

Wow bad reviews but my experience was positive. I rented bikes in both downtown Boston and Salem. If you have experience with city bike rentals it can get annoying until you crack the method. Did the day rental for $10, rode the bike 1 mile. Took a shower only to come out to the bike being locked. Called support and they couldn't unlock the bike, yet I still had to return the bike. So I walked 1 mile uphill with a bike that would barely move and it's siren going off. When speaking with"customer service" they could care less and didn't even entertain the idea of a refund or partial refund. Was given the run around for almost 40 minutes. Terrible system. If all the bike stations are full, then you're SOL! You'll have to ride another 5-minutes to a different station, then walk another 10-15 minutes back to your original destination. But, it's subsidized by the State of Massachusetts, and they outlawed ANY and ALL competition (including scooters), so you don't have any other options. What the F**k, when you get to a full station to dock your bike the lyft / bluebikes fail to provide alternative services to allow their employees to provide method to relocate your bikes to an alternative station for you when their station is full when your unavailable to go to the next nearest station which might be a 15 or 30 minutes walk at minimum depending on if their are any crowded events like the boston marathon. Bluebikes and Lyft Please calculate demand and increase the size and number of stations in a high demand location, and please provide special employees that will move your bike for you to an alternative bike station during high demand events aka the boston marathon when the near station to your destination is full. Any person that has a more positive experience has a valid point. However bluebikes / Lyft can keep cutting us off like this please spread the word so that lyft and it's subsidiaries are forced to change their policies and provide the recommended services above at minimum for their disservice. read more

I've used BlueBikes a handful of times when my own bike has been in the shop, and in general I think they are a good option for a quick one-way ride. Recently, I used a BlueBike and made EXTRA sure to dock it sufficiently because I'd heard about a couple of friends running into issues with the bikes going missing after they've docked them. I checked a couple of times to make sure it was locked in properly, but somehow the bike is missing, and now I'm being charged $265 for the missing bike. I went back to the station to look for the bike as well as a few of the other stations close by to no avail. It's not worth a $5 ride if it's THAT hard to make sure a bike is locked in properly and you're at risk of a $265 fee. read more

I've used their services several times without major incident, however I'm here to report a terribly unfortunate experience I've just had with them. The app will NOT accurately display available docks. If docks are down, they will still show as available in the app, but "down" on their backend system (confirmed in customer support call). I rented a bike only with docking availability in mind. Came to find out multiple docks (all remaining unused) at my desired location were not functional even though the app does not relay that information. Was instructed by customer support that my only option was to find a new location to dock or else pay overage charges. Not only did this take me almost 1/2 mile away in the opposite direction of my desired location (my .9 mile trip ended up taking 1 hour 14 minutes including customer call), they refused to refund me for my experience. Bottom line ______ : the app does not accurately display available docks and YOU, the customer, are responsible or you will be charged extra. Reconciling this major inconvenience for me personally, was not worth $2.50 and a future customer to them. Fortunately, the 2nd to closest station was available for me. When this happens to you, you might not be as lucky late at night in areas of the city you weren't expecting to have to venture in. read more

I was in Boston for a day and a half and rented a Blue Bike for a short amount of time to get back to my hotel at night. I ended up in a situation where I felt unsafe and left my bike in order to make it inside the hotel. Customer Services reached out letting me know that I had not docked my bike properly, but I had already left Massachusetts. I assumed the situation was taken care of after I explained my circumstances and a customer service rep said "We understand this situation, my apologies for this inconvenience. We notified to the Operations Team about this, so they will take care of this as soon as possible." A few days later I was charged $265 for not properly docking my bike. I tried to call customer service and was put on hold and then hung up on. I then explained my situation to William, the new operations rep that emailed me. He did not acknowledge my circumstances or say anything in regards to my safety. Simply charged a $250 fee + tax and said it's non-refundable due to their policy. When I replied saying I thought it was disappointing to hear that a $3.7 billion company valued $250 more than the safety of a young woman I received no response. After I bought the day pass I scanned my bike and it never said anything about me having to use a classic bike. They said "we can wait 24 hours for the bike to shut down, you can pay the fees then, OR "Go find and dock it yourself, then pay the fees. In general the Blue Bikes has always worked for me for short trips in the Boston area. However recently I discoverer I was over charged to fee of 79.69 for a about a 15 minute ride in Cambridge, Massachusetts. After several calls to Blue Bikes, all I would get is some call taker in another country that would absolutely refuse to refund the over charge because their docking system to return the bikes malfunctioned. Yes their system malfunctions at the customers cost. After doing some online searching I see that this has been an ongoing problem with Bluebikes. Some customers were told by blue bikes that the bike they used were stolen and were charged a lot more. Well if the bike was stolen, did Bluebike contact the police? Did they file a stolen property report? It seems a company the refuses to return over charged money because their own equipment malfunctions is a scam. read more

Brutal customer service experience. Their bikes are perfectly fine but I cannot recommend people use them anymore after what happened to us. We see people trying to yank bikes out of their docks without paying on a regular basis. Because of this, my partner and I are always extra careful to make sure the bike is securely locked in the dock before walking away. However, the lock system isn't perfect and sometimes people can still yank them out, even after they have been locked. This last experience, we locked our bikes in the dock like normal, but received a message a few days later saying the bike was not accounted for. We know for a fact that we returned these bikes properly, but we are still being charged $265!! It feels like an egregious amount of money to be charged for something we had no control over. Not recommended at all, especially in congested areas or if you're short on time, as you must park the bike at a docking station. If no docking options are available near your destination, there's no way to end the ride, and the company will charge you for 24 hours and may even add a lost bike fee. The customer service is unhelpful--one of the worst I have encountered--and seems more focused on charging fees than finding solutions. The company doesn't track its bikes, so if your bike gets locked, breaks down, or you're unable to find a parking option, they will still charge you DESPITE YOUR ATTEMPTS TO COMMUNICATE THROUGH THE APP, PHONE CALLS, AND EMAILS. read more

The only good thing about this is the workers' attitude on the phone calls, they are extremely patient, but they are probably forced by this horrible company to talk like that anyway. I lost 300 dollars because I pushed a bike into a slot, thinking it is parked, but apparently it wasn't. I made a phone call to them during mid night when I received the notification, and started an "investigation" as if it's not their shitty hardware's fault. When they said they will email me, they got the wrong email confused with a random guy. Three days later, they charged me 300 dollars because they think I am ignoring them, I emailed back, multiple times, they always replied stubbornly stating that this change is not refundable. Tearable experience. App is fine and idea is great. The realization is not carried as it should be. When you rent the bike you don't have enough bike lines to drive and it becomes dangerous. You are not supposed to use pavements. When you want to return the bike maybe there isn't enough space for the bikes and sometimes the terminals malfunction. After all we were charged additional 30min because we arrived late 4min. Never again. read more

I unwisely signed up for a month membership in BlueBikes this morning before having tried one. My first ride was a terrible experience: the bike was heavy and slow, and provided no shock absorption whatsoever so every bump went straight into my tailbone. On top of that, the front brake was stuck partly engaged, so the bike made a loud rasping sound the whole (35 minute) ride and was difficult to pedal. Needless to say, I never want to ride one again, and felt so dumb for having paid for the month. However, I contacted BlueBikes and expressed all of the above, and they refunded me for the month even though technically they don't have to. So I am giving them 3 stars for customer service -- I really appreciate that they made the exception given my bad experience. read more

I rent a silver electric bike on a trip to Boston and did not read the fine print. I bought a day pass on the app and proceeded to have a lovely ride along the Charles River and out to arboretum and then back along the Emerald Necklace. I did a total of about 34 miles but spread it out over 5 hours of sightseeing. Unfortunately when turning in the bike I found I did not have a ten dollar day pass but an $80 bill, for their definition of a day is TWO hours. I called customer service but they were of no help. I have rented bikes in other cities and have never had this problem, so just beware of this misleading marketing! read more

BlueBikes is the worst bike share racket I have ever had the displeasure of using. I cannot overstate the failings of this "service". For the record, I've ridden over 4,000 miles in Boston on my own bike. After my bike was stolen, I thought BlueBikes would be a fine alternative while I shopped around for a new one. I was tragically wrong. I've taken 15 BlueBikes rides over the course of six weeks, and I've noted below just a few of my experiences. - The dock nearest to my apartment has been inexplicably offline 50% of the time I've tried to use it. Many times the app says it's online, so I walk there only to find none of the codes work on any of the bikes. - Last time this happened, the app charged me the ride fee (even though none of the bikes unlocked for me), and wouldn't let me unlock a bike from any other station because it said I already had a rental in progress. - There's no guarantee a dock will be free at your destination. If you're trying to keep your ride under 30 minutes (or be charged $2.50 for each additional half hour), you better account for an extra 10 minutes in case there are no docks at your destination and you have to scramble to find a back up station. It could be that there are 4 docks available when you begin your ride and 0 when you arrive (this has happened to me more than once). You should also add at least 15+ minutes to your projected commute time, because the next station could be a 5 - 10 minute ride / a 5 - 20 minute walk from your destination. - The same is true, by the way, if your destination station is inexplicably offline, but the app has it marked as online. - One sad evening, I went to 5 separate BlueBikes stations to pick up a bike. The app said they were all online, but none of the codes worked on any of the bikes at any of the stations. I spent an hour trying to pick up a bike and ended up walking the entire way to my destination. - I once picked up a bike whose brake pads were so worn, it took me at least 20 ft to come to a stop at any given time. It was terrifying. You may be wondering why I keep trying even after so many shitty experiences. The answer is I'm obsessed with biking and prefer it to any other means of transportation. BlueBikes are the only game in town. They know it, and they act accordingly. read more

If I could give Zero stars I would. Many times the app says there are no bikes available while I was standing in front of one. Based on other stories I heard I was always careful when docking the bike. I waited for the click and light to change and tried to remove the bike again a couple of times. Became a habit to do so. They said I still had bike out and charged me 260$ for it!!! I know 100% I was not careless and locked the bike. Still trying to get the money back as I believe it is their faulty docks that caused this. They did not reach out to me to report an issue with the bike I rented and returned to the station. Their customer service is hard to reach, arrogant, and unhelpful. I guess I haven't had the same somewhat disastrous interactions with BlueBikes as some other folks here - it's been an overall... ... (Wait for it.) ... Smooth ride. I have an annual membership, and I understand the limitations offered to members - unlimited 45-minute blocks, which can be "reupped" anytime by swinging by a station and restarting the clock. As I only use the bikes in lieu of ride shares for within Boston travel, this is never an issue, as I can get from any station to another in less than 45 (although it looks like the network has exploded, so maybe not now?) Anyway, it could set you off if you're expecting a bike rental - if you want something like that, look at Urban AdvenTours. BlueBikes is a point-to-point option, and it's worked well for me. read more
