The service is very attentive at the Bluebird Cafe. I'm always asked if I want more coffee. Yesterday, I tried the grits, and they were delicious. I also ordered the huevos rancheros, and that order comes with homemade salsa, very tasty black beans (not out of a can), cotija cheese, and farm-fresh eggs. It was a healthy breakfast that kept me full all day. This place is not much to look at from the street, as it has plain signage and is hidden in a strip mall, but if you ask any local where to get the best breakfast in town, they'll point you to the Bluebird. This was our first visit to Bluebird. We have vacationed in this area for many years and decided to try this place for breakfast. It is Sunday at 10:00 and there is no wait to get to our table. The server is friendly and our coffee arrives soon after we sit down. The wife orders Huevos Ranchero after reading so many positive reviews and for me it is always blueberry pancakes and bacon. The real maple syrup is less than a buck which is the cheapest we have ever paid for 1.8 ounces. The restaurant is now pretty full, not one empty space left, as we wait for our meals to arrive. Yo give you some history I do not eat eggs so we are always searching for great pancakes. I think I found my blue bird of happiness. This restaurant makes the best blueberry pancakes I have ever tasted in Rhode Island. They were fluffy, loaded with berries and tasted incredible with real maple syrup. The bacon was well done, but very fatty and quite thin, but who cares, the pancakes were great! My wife's Huevos Ranchero met the high raves of other reviewers. The service was quick and Debbie did a great job of filling our coffee cup. She says she is not a regular and only helps out on Sundays. She let me take her photo but didn't want it published. This rating is strictly based on the horrendous service (lack thereof) that my wife and I received a couple of Sundays ago. We waited a solid 15 minutes at our table and were not even looked at by the two waitresses who were serving tables all around us. No acknowledgment, water, I'll be right with you, nothing! We finally got up to exit and a third waitress at the register spoke to us for the first time since we had entered and politely said "Have a nice day." My wife lost it and said "we were never served!" I know the food is good but we will never be back. read more

We are not from the Wakefield area but met friends here at their suggestion. I began to regret it as soon as I pulled out my chair as it was sticky, and I moved over to another seat at the table and that chair was sticky, also. Yuck. 3 out of 4 of us ordered spicy food; I was the holdout as I do not eat it so I had the Chef Salad. Ambiance is zero. Service is friendly but insufficient. Bathroom is clean. I'm being nice because now I need to say this. We ate there last night around 7:00 PM. It is now 10:00 PM the day after. Nausea and diarrhea started for both of us this morning, still ongoing. Not feverish, not chills...it's not a bug. We ate completely different food (salad vs jumbalaya). I can only surmise that food handling, quality of ingredients, something universal...made us so sick. Compared to other cafes, Bluebird is an average breakfast place at most. What is truly amazing is their Friday night dinner specials. Two new specials every week--usually one poultry/red meat and one seafood. Never had a bad meal there. Every flavor is superbly balanced and intensely delicious. My favorite is their adobo slow cooked ribs with pickled onions. The jambalaya is always on the dinner menu--a GIANT portion of pure spicy goodness for only $12. I had the best corned beef hash I have had ANYWHERE. One of the problems with hash is usually they make it too salty. This had just the right amount of salt. I would definitely go here again! When it comes to breakfast food- I want my plates full, the food scrumptious and certainly don't want to empty my pockets for a completely satisfying meal. With that said..... I had been here once before a couple years ago with a buddy of mine who just LOVES it, (especially the Huevos Rancheros). Although, he is very close friends with someone of the family and got that "friendly service". Also, I did not know until a recent return, a discount as well. So, upon my return a couple weeks ago with another friend of mine. I was a tad surprised when my breakfast came to about 35$. Not cool Bluebird to charge some for your maple syrup and not others. ESPECIALLY, when you charge a buck a spoonful. (very small bottles - $1 a bottle) Don't even bother if you get pancakes/a waffle. You will be spending 3$ on syrup alone. I also want to point out the fact, I clearly remember getting plates with the food FLOWING over when I came by with my friend who knew them. Oh, but now, Not only did we spend much more money, there was less on our plates. We didn't really order that much, but overall, every little thing is priced oddly. You can get 1 egg with two sides for about 3 and change. But if you want just the damn egg, that's 2 dollars? I understand family owned businesses have to do what they need to in order to stay afloat, buuuuut, I've been to plenty breakfast shops with better tasting and cheaper food. Soo, what? Went to Bluebird on Saturday morning to get some egg sandwiches for breakfast, but ended up getting getting the rancheros instead! The fella got the traditional huevos rancheros, and I decided to get the verduras rancheras to shake things up a little bit. We weren't sure if we should get the small or large, but our server (sidenote: everyone that works here is amazingly friendly and immediately warm and welcoming) recommended the large. It might have been just a tad too much, but the small wouldn't have been enough for us two hungry, no-longer-growing adults. This is straight up home cooking style, and really good at that. Gordon Ramsey wouldn't give Bluebird any points for presentation, but the food speaks for itself. Fresh ingredients, good corn tortillas, and the biscuit! The biscuit was divine. As a veg, I often can't eat homestyle biscuits, but I was assured that these were not made with lard and I'm very glad for that. I'm thankful Bluebird isn't within walking distance because I could easily see myself grabbing a biscuit (or more than one) daily. Anyway. Reasonable prices, a friendly staff and good, comforting food. And even late-morning on a Saturday, it wasn't hard to get a table. We stopped here for Sunday brunch with a group of 4 on our way home from visiting the beach. The service was fast & friendly and the food was very good (& well priced!!). I got blueberry pancakes & 2 eggs and my boyfriend got the fried crawfish sandwich which he loved. The menu has a lottt of good choices & it was hard to pick because everything looked and sounded so good. The next time you're in the mood for a deliciously filling, freshly made to order breakfast, brunch, or even lunch, check out this cute little diner-like cafe. It has the sweetest employees and the place is full of regulars and locals, a good sign of quality. The cafe has a throw-back charm about it. It reminded me of an old breakfast place I used to go to as a child. A bit of nostalgia helps welcome a nice warm meal. To the meal... I ordered a small Verduras Rancheras, which was plentiful even as a small. It was so pleasantly filling, and I was happy to find a well made and unique breakfast option. They have a wide range of foods to choose from with styles ranging in Cajun, Creole, Mexican, Southwestern, Caribbean and highlighted as a New Orleans-style neighborhood cafe. Very, very cool to find near downtown Wakefield. The Verduras Rancheras had a nice assortment of freshly cut green peppers, mushrooms, spices galore, black beans and sauce, and a nice salsa to top the plate off. This was all simmering on a fresh and soft corn tortilla, which added to the texture and flavor. I will definitely be returning to try other items, but I know this will be a plentiful repeat order. I only took a star away because I also ordered the home fries and bacon. It's a staple and anytime I go to a new breakfast place, I like to test out those two foods. I wasn't blown away, they were standard, but too greasy for my liking. The potatoes were a tad undercooked, as well. Yet, everything was fresh and I can tell this place takes great pride in their food, as they should. A group of us were very hungry on a Saturday morning after a long night of activity and craved good breakfast foods. We walked in and the place was quite busy. We were seated right away, however, and the server took care of us almost immediately. I ordered a build your own omelet, which consisted of three fresh eggs, served with toast or a biscuit, and my choice of home fries, yellow grits, or black beans. I'd highly recommend the biscuits and home fries. You are able to pick your ingredients--ingredients included grilled onions, mushrooms, feta cheese, Swiss cheese, jalapenos, chicken, ham, tomatoes, sausage, chilies, spinach, bacon, and more. It's completely up to you! All of this for only $6. We also drank coffee, milk, and orange juice. All toast is served buttered, so if you don't want butter, you must request it without. Historically, this is an excellent breakfast place. I say "historically," since we just visited it today & the food wasn't so good. The Powerhouse Eggs - my favorite item - were kind of flat, salty, but tasteless. I think they didn't put enough of the special ingredient - nutritional yeast - in it, and the home fries were overpowered by garlic salt. The biscuits were still good though. Plus, something I ate there made me sick. That's the 2nd time it's happened, but that's over an 8 year period. So I figure they may have a new line cook in the kitchen. We'll still go back. So what did Big Bob eat. A little bit of everything. 1) Corned Beef hash. This is not typical RI Hash, this is just a bit different. So if you love CB-Hash, go in with an open mind and you will be rewarded. 2) Biscuit . I know, 'it is just a biscuit' you are saying to yourself. Nope. I love being in RI and NE, but biscuits are not in your culinary wheelhouse. This one on the other hand is. And on Sundays, they do Biscuits and Gravy. The clouds part and the angels sing. 3) Grits. In the case Cheese and Jalapeno grits. Finally. And no, grits are not in the New England wheelhouse either. These were fantastic. So what I am saying here is if you are looking to do something different and put a little south in your mouth as Paula would say, you should head on over. I also say Jambalaya as well as etouffee. Got corned beef hash, grits, a biscuit, eggs, bacon, OJ, and a small order of huevos rancheros. First, grits are kinda bland and icky in general I think. Our group had breakfast and I wish I had followed other Yelp reviewers' advice and gotten the huevos rancheros. It looked great and from the bite I had, was delicious. The menu states that the tortillas come from the area's only tortillaria, and they also emphasized the other steps taken to keep their food fresh and local. I had the blueberry pancakes, which actually had the blueberries on top of them instead of in them, but they tasted good. I guess I'm a tough grader, looking at the other reviews of the Bluebird. We went there last night, which was probably the 7th or 8th time I've eaten there overall. There are some dishes that they do very well, and some others not so much. I think for the best experience, you should stick to the breakfast menu. The good items - Waffles! They make delicious, huge Belgian waffles, and thankfully don't smother them in butter, whipped cream, or heaven forbid margarine *shudder*. The great - Corned beef hash. Yes, this is as good as it gets. I've been a fan of hash forever, and the Bluebird makes probably the best I've ever had. Truly tops! The not so much - syrup. Yeah yeah, you're saying "geez Dave, syrup...really?" Well yes - this is just the ersatz Aunt Jemima stuff. If it isn't 100% maple syrup, it ain't syrup! Sorry. The home fries are not very good either. They use red bliss, chopped into fairly large chunks. Unfortunately, they are rather greasy, and not at all crispy. I'm a bit of a home fry snob. When I think of the perfect home fry, I think of small, consistent cubes of firm potato with a crunchy crust, onions, and a bit of salt and pepper. They should be crispy, not mushy. Sadly, you won't find that here. On Friday evenings the Bluebird serves dinner as well as their breakfast menu. They specialize in New Orleans style dishes, some of which are very good. I like their jambalaya a lot. Last night I tried the New Orleans style catfish. It was two fillets of breaded catfish, a pile of delicious fries, and a Cajun "tartar" sauce. The sauce was more like a remoulade really, and very good. The catfish itself was, eh, catfish. The breading was ok, but had a flavor I didn't really love. It was crispy and coarse, perhaps a bit too coarse. The fish was cooked nicely, but I guess I'm not so fond of catfish. I'd rather have cod or haddock prepared this way, which is no fault of the restaurant's. It maybe that as a New Englander I'm just too predisposed to the traditional fish & chips that I can't really dig on the catfish, but oh well. The fries though were excellent. There's some sort of long explanation of how they prepare their food, and the process of making the fries, on their menu. Whatever they do, it's worth it. Really good! The service is pretty good. Pleasant waitresses, the food arrives quickly and we didn't feel ignored ever. This is basic stuff, but not every restaurant can do it. Bluebird gets it. Decor is a bit shabby and worn. Overall the place looks a bit tired, and could use more lighting. I know it's "just" a diner, but an update to the interior would go a long way to improving it. I want to like this place more, as it's one of those rare family run places that is doing something different and interesting. If they made some small adjustments here and there, it would make the Bluebird great. Lots of potential here, but ultimately a little too hit or miss. read more
