Wonderful venue close to Colfax and Colorado. It's much smaller than the Fillmore and the The Ogden. They only had 3 bartenders at the bar on the first floor and they didn't have the upstairs bar open. It's all open seating too so try and get there early if you want a good seat. The line moves very fast if you have to wait outside. Also, they have male and female bathrooms upstairs and downstairs so that's very convenient. It really is a hidden gem of a venue in Denver. I have lived all over this great world and the Bluebird is definitely in my top 5 concert venues. Now admittedly, for me, it is usually the band I have gone to see and the people who come with me that influence my opinion of a venue. I mean, I have seen a bluegrass band play out in a backyard and it is now probably #9 on my list of all time favorite venue's, damn the Bluebird sure does know how to pull in some phenomenal acts!!! Also, the door guys are pretty cool and there have been times I didn't want to catch the second or third act and I have ducked out and gone to a bar and came back in time to see a headliner. *Speaking of Door Guys...the staff, ALL of them, are great. There are different levels of platforms for people to stand on to get a better vantage point and there is standing room right in front of the stage. There are 2 bars, one upstairs, one down. Personally, I like to walk in the door, head right upstairs, stop by the bar to get a reasonably priced beer (They do not charge $9 for a beer like the Fillmore or Ogden) and then move right to the balcony area. Since it is a small place this balcony offers a fantastic view of the band and the peeps below. Plenty of room to move your elbows and shake your butt. Also, on the balcony, right against the railing, there are about 5 tall tables with chairs...so if you know you are feeling a little bit tired from life, but still don't want to miss one of your favorite bands....get there early and plant yourself at a table. A Tip For You All....Avoid atrocious ticket fees by purchasing tickets right at the box office, which is open 30 minutes before any show. They do charge an extra $2 if you use a credit card vs. cash, but still better than paying an extra $9-10 for whatever "reasons" Ticket Master feels like charging you for. It's a great place to see a show. Several bands I enjoy pass through here before ending up at the Paramount or the Fillmore. Several different levels with numerous bars let you flow through the venue without ever feeling you are backed into a corner. I like to head to the top level straightaway as I think it is minimally cooler and less stifling, but that could be my imagination. I've also seen a few special event movies at this location, which I really enjoyed. The Spike & Mike animation festival was here as was a special midnight showing of Army of Darkness, a personal fave. read more

This venue reminded me a lot of fox theatre. It has the same setup but there is only one bar and it faces the stage. The front is quite smaller too. There's three levels to view and enjoy the band including a balcony. My friends and I took front and center on the floor. It wasn't a sold out concert so it wasn't too crazy packed where I didn't feel as if I had space to move. The only downside to this venue are the bathrooms. There are two downstairs and one upstairs but if this venue was crazy packed, the lines would be long and you'd be missing the concert. read more

My Favorite band Delian came to the Bluebird and we decided to go. I did realize that parking is an issue and according to previous reviews there was a bit of parking right across the street. Just be aware that the building that used to be there has been torn down and there is chain link fence around the vacant lot. We happened to be at the Cherry Creek Mall and took an Uber to Bluebird which took 3 min and we didn't have to worry about parking. We did get there about 1 hour early as there is no assigned seating and we wanted to get a good spot. Once inside you will walk right by a bar and into the open area. Very cool and intimate atmosphere. There are a few chairs right by the bar but it appears that those are treasured and snatched up rather quickly. There is a balcony and several areas on the floor to stand and watch the concert. We were able to secure a spot on the right side at the front. It is great to see bands up close and personal. The staff was very nice and the bar service was fast. After the concert was caught an Uber back and had no issues with parking. The music does not seem to be as loud as other concerts I have gone to but this is a great place to experience a good artist. read more

Came here last night to see Common Kings... who would have thought that Denver likes their Island Reggae?! Never the less, I'm happy I was able to catch them while I am out here for work. For being an out of towner, and not familiar with the venue or area, this is a nice venue. I love the old school marquee they have on the outside of the building and the inside is really spacious. The only downfall is that there really isn't any parking. They have a TINY lot that is designated for Bluebird, but that only fits about 20 cars. I had to park in a neighborhood behind the theater - but watch out... if you park in the area that requires a permit, you WILL get a ticket. Love me a historic theater! The Bluebird is a Denver classic and lays down all the vibes (and some pretty great music, too). The lit marquee is one of my favorite things to see while driving down the 'fax--it keeps a throwback feel among all of the new businesses popping up in the area. My partner is a musician and this is actually the first venue I saw him perform in Denver, so I will always have a special little spot for the Bluebird. The interior of this venue is probably what you'd expect--a vintage theater with lots of original features. There have been a lot of upgrades through the years to make this a modern music venue, but the old school feel still shines through. The Bluebird books an awesome mix of local indie bands and national acts, and prices are fair in my opinion. Drinks are just okay--think dive bar esque--but there are plenty of fun bars up and down Colfax if you'd like to get your booze on ahead of time. This may be just me, but I feel like the closer you get to the stage, the worse the sound gets in this space. The lighting is magic though, and the tiered rows make it easy to see (there's also a balcony if you really want a panoramic view of the stage). We have so much great music coming through Denver all the time, so I definitely suggest keeping the Bluebird on your radar! read more

I have a new favorite music venue in Denver (Redrocks is my absolute favorite...but I don't consider that part of Denver) I saw KT rock the house with her solo show last night and my expectations for the Bluebird were very high...here on Yelp it was built up so much. You know that feeling you get when you're going to some place that is super built up and you're worried it won't live up? That feeling left when I got to the front door. The gentleman who took our tickets was super friendly and greeted us genuinely, checked our tickets and let us know that we would get a wristband for drinking on the inside. The gentleman who did that was equally nice and courteous. The theater itself is absolutely beautiful-I hear it used to be an old movie theater. It has cool marble columns and sculpted lights lining the sides of it-there are even some portraits on either side of the stage. There are 5 total restrooms-one unisex at the bottom floor, a men and womens room on the bottom, and 2 more upstairs. Interesting note-if you hit up the water closet upstairs, you get a cool view outside the window the's right next to the marquee. The bartender I talked to downstairs was very attentive, friendly and efficient, and the drink was surprisingly not terribly expensive ($5 for a Sierra Nevada) The theater is standing room with limited seating, including some bar stools and a small bar downstairs and a few more barstools/tables upstairs (there's another bar up there as well). The nice thing is that the standing is tiered-if you're short, just get there a little early and you can stand against the railing and not have to worry about having your view blocked. I was very impressed with how quick and efficient the set changes were-no more than 20 minutes between each performer (there were 3 in total). These guys definitely know what they're doing. The sound engineers also did a great job, everyone sounded great-not too loud, not echo-y, nada like that. I left the Bluebird very very satisfied-the show was great, the sound was great, they didn't pack it in too much, and the staff was the friendliest I've encountered of any Denver venue. One of the best little venues in town. The place as a whole is very intimate: small to a fault at times, but not really a bad seat in the house. Well, they don't actually have seats per se, unless you're one of the folks that arrives when doors open to nab a stool near the railing. I'm 6'3" tall though, so I have a good height advantage when it comes to gaining views in a crowd, so take that "view" part with a grain of salt. Acoustics are usually spot on, but I have been to a show where they need a better balance. I blame the tech on the board more than the venue itself though, and that can really happen anywhere for any show. Drinks aren't cheap, but that is the way it goes with concert venues. Parking does suck. That is the issue with the area. Try living here. You're not going to get a front-row spot, and will almost certainly have a walk. But just go a few blocks up, over, or around, and you'll find something. Enjoy the walk. I love this venue! Some real diamonds in the rough have come through on the cheap. Pro-tip: avoid the AXS 90000% fees and make a trip to the box office to buy your tickets in advance. Well-worth it. read more

I know a lot of music people say the sound is terrible at the Bluebird, but honestly I don't notice or care. I love this place. It's small without being divey. They get some really awesome artists in there. And the floors are tiered so there's lot of places you can stand and see. Besides that their drinks are relatively cheap for a music theater and the bartenders are usually on top of their game - serving people faster than most other places. The only downside to this theater is that sometimes parking is a hassle because the immediate side streets have restrictions against theater people parking there. And the shows are usually early because they are often 16 and up and there is a neighborhood noise curfew. Regardless, the bluebird holds my heart for seeing live music in Denver. read more

$15 for water, a drink and a coke? Oops. I was unaware this was the Fillmore. I was deceived by the tiny bathrooms and the rather crowded aisles. Somehow, it felt like the Marquis not the Fillmore. I'm 100% positive a drink, a water and a coke at the Marquis has never been $15. That's okay. I just know not to drink here next time. I wonder if training people to pre-party hard before going to shows pays off in the long run for a venue like the Bluebird? Like many folks said, the layout is great. I actually really like the stage height. I could see every band from the front pit even when I was standing behind a "Wall of Tall". Better than the Ogden, Marquis or Gothic in my opinion. I had a very disappointing experience with this venue on Wednesday. I went there to see Owl City, and the opening band was Matthew Thiessen and the Earthquakes, which I was also very excited to see. We live down in Colorado Springs, so we made sure to leave 2 hours early in order to get there on time for the doors to open at 6pm. Once we arrived we were told that doors would not be opening until 7. Since that meant we would be standing in the cold for over an hour, we opted to grab a couple drinks at the bar next door. At 7pm we headed back to the line, which was barely moving. This wouldn't have been a problem- we have been to dozens of shows at other venues, waited in lines, and we had no concerns about where we would be standing in the crowd. The problem came once we FINALLY made it inside... They had started the show before the line had made it inside, and we had completely missed Matthew Thiessen. I have never, EVER had this happen at any other venues. I am completely disappointed, I was just as excited to see him as I was for Owl City, and who knows when I'll get another chance. I'm so heartbroken that they made the decision to start the show like that. Probably will never go back to this venue. read more

The Bluebird is great, and parking isn't actually that bad. The surrounding blocks do have restrictions, but there are a few sweet spots and usually quite a few on Colfax. The lots across the street are generally safe, too. A new liquor license was obtained last year which allows the crowd to mingle, unrestricted by age. No more being shoved in the balcony! Shows at the Bluebird are 16+ unless otherwise noted, a kid younger than 16 will get in fine if they go to a show with someone who will claim guardianship. "The Bluebird district" of Colfax is really thriving and worth checking out before a show. There are a lot of unique local businesses with a cool sense of community. read more

Denver's got its share of small, intimate venues and the Bluebird is definitely one of good ones. With a bar downstairs and another upstairs on the balcony, it has surprisingly fast service and surprisingly reasonable prices. Though it doesn't have all the big name acts the Fillmore Auditorium does, the Bluebird brings in a lot of great national acts that deserve the intimacy it provides. I've seen the Flaming Lips, Elliot Smith, the Meat Puppets, and at least half a dozen other great shows there, not counting the local bands like Matson Jones and the Hot IQs. Unfortunately, the Bluebird struck a deal with Ticketmaster recently, meaning their prices have gone up slightly and you have to deal with stupid fees to order tickets online. Luckily, if you go down in person, tickets are cheaper (assuming you pay cash). For the Meat Puppets show last night, tickets ran $16 in cash, $20 on a card, and $20 plus a service fee online. The Bluebird has a great history as well. Located on Colfax--Denver's version of a red light district--the Bluebird used to be a porn theater. You can see it featured as such in the movie "Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead." read more

Before it was reopened in 1994, the Bluebird first opened in the teens as a movie theater, and was a porn theater for a long time until it closed in the 70s. In my mind, there is still just a hint of sleaze clinging to the floors. When you enter the theater, you are somehow still aware that you're on East Colfax. The historic surroundings aren't enough to make you forget it, in fact they make it more poignant, as if the building itself is manifesting how hard it is to survive in a tough neighborhood. Parking is really tricky. Get there early, or take a bus or walk. Not my favorite venue, but it's a landmark, and I'm glad it's still there. read more

I liked it better when I could sit down for a show, wearing a trench coat. But I digress. Like many theaters that started off as true theaters, it is not meant for SRO crowds. It's too long and the acoustics are not great because of the incredibly high ceilings. Someone called this the little brother to the Ogden, it's MUCH closer to being the little brother to the gothic, they are VERY similar acoustically, which is to say pretty crappy. I much prefer the Ogden for seeing shows, because the stage isnt as high relative to the pit you're standing in. Another drawback is because it was designed as a theater, the entrance is pretty narrow. Also, the neighborhood is getting a LOT better since I lived there in the early 80s, but it's still kind of rough. It IS Colfax after all. read more

I've been here a whopping one time. Does that qualify me as an expert? Hell yes! I loved this joint...it's an old theatre setup with a big bar in the main floor and another, smaller in the upper balcony. I couldn't really tell you anything about the acoustics because I'm not a sound snob and I'd never heard of, let alone heard a song from the band we were watching. I can however say, it was a great venue to see them. The inside is fairly large, but still seems cozy and small. The staff was all great, they poured some strong drinks, and a good time was had by all. I look forward to returning. read more

The Bluebird is kind of the little brother of the Ogden. This is good and bad. The downside: It gets the lesser shows and is a smaller venue. The positive tip: The Bluebird is further away from Capitol Hill and in a much more interesting part of town. There are a couple really cool neighborhood bars across the street to get your pre-drink on. And you know what, the lesser shows can be a lot more interesting at times. Best shows I've seen there: Superdrag (twice, both to near-empty rooms), Bright Eyes (before he was an indie superstar); Suicide Machines; and perhaps most interesting, the reunited Dictators. A good friend of mine was friends with head Dictator Wild Dick Manitoba. His sister lives in town and was at the show, so while rocking out to Manitoba and Ross the Boss on stage we were chatting with Manitoba's sister. Final note: I was in Amsterdam a few years ago and browsing through a record store. I found a CD by a band that had the marquee of the Bluebird on the cover. All the writing was in a foreign language, so I couldn't read what it said, but apparently a European band recorded a live CD there. read more

I'll be back for shows I really want to see, but only after doing a cost-benefit analysis of the quality of the show vs. my desire to enjoy it with a beer in hand. What a wonderful little venue! Last night was my first concert here and I loved it! Bring ear plugs as the place is tiny, but that's what we love! We love seeing bands who are up and coming because you get a much more intimate show! Drink prices were high per usual but you know what you're getting into when you go to concert. In a perfect world, there would be a "short person section" in every musical venue in the world. Of course, in a perfect world, I would be a good cook, and I know that's not going to happen anytime soon, so for now, I enjoy the tiered floors at the Bluebird. I like the Bluebird. I like its vintage sign. I like the restaurants around it. I like the well-staffed bar. I especially like the unisex bathroom on the first floor that, for some reason, no one ever uses. Seriously, it's astondingly clean for a music venue/bar bathroom. I love music, but I don't have the keenest ear for sound quality, so as for the claim that the sound quality sucks in the Bluebird, I can't really say. The one thing I dislike is the entrance/merch area. It's tiny and it's one hell of a bottleneck at the end of a show, when half the people are trying to leave and the other half are trying to buy stuff at the merch booth. For a short person who gets antsy in crowded places, the exit line from the Bluebird is one of my least favorite places to be. However, the front of the second tier during a concert is one of my favorite places to be. read more

Went to see Matt Nathanson there on Monday night (if you don't know who Matt is, and you dig on acoustic rock kinda stuff -- I HIGHLY recommend checking out www.myspace.com/mattnathanson or mattnathanson.com) ANYWAY I had never been to the Bluebird before, had never heard much about it, but I'm always excited to check out new concert venues, even if they're just new to me. It's small, old-styled, intimate, and fun. Parking can be a bitch if you don't get there early (you can park across the st. in the paradise cleaners lot, or on the street -- just be careful the street you park on isn't a resident only street.) The venue itself is totally small and intimate and I love it for that. It's only about 3.5 billion times better than the Fillmore. That's all. Not like the Fillmore sucks, but it blows. But anyway. The Bluebird is super cool, great staff, solid location, average drink prices -- and it's right across the street from Goosetown and Mezcal, so that helps. If you want a close-up intimate concert venue that provides great views from every angle, go to the Bluebird. You won't regret it. Unless you see a shitty band. Then that's your own fault. read more

In "Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead," Andy Garcia picks up Fairuza Balk in front of the Bluebird Theater. Balk is a prostitute looking for Garcia as a client but he isn't interested. He is there to visit Christopher Lloyd who is a film projectionist, as the theater in the movie is shown as a porno-house. Don't worry, Balk and Garcia have sex later in order to produce a child before Garcia is mowed down by Steve Bucemi. I don't know why more movies aren't made in Denver. It's such a great locations. And the Bluebird Theater would be a fitting backdrop to any quality film. It also happens to be a great place to see a live show. I love these old tiered theaters. It pretty much assures you got a great view anywhere and if you want to be in the throng, you can go be in a throng. The sound is generally good hear as well, though it seems to take awhile to adjust things sometimes. My only real complaint about this place is how long it takes them to open up the ticket counter before shows. Half-hour, really? That's a bit lame Bluebird staff. Otherwise, Bluebird is a pretty cool place. Whether you are in a Pulp Fiction rip-off or in real life. read more

Wow, definitely not my venue of choice. I had kinda high hopes for here because of my own pretty dorky reason. I like the name! The Bluebird Theater sounds pretty legit as far as music venues are concerned. But it suffers from a pretty fatal flaw sadly. Their stage is about a foot too high. Usually, I love being front row at shows. But here I just couldn't do it and I had to move to the first rail in back. Like, I couldn't imagine myself straining my neck all night staring up. Really, other than that though, the venue is really cool. The blue neon sign outside is tops in terms of coolness. Everything sounded amazing as well for the concert I saw. In all honestly, I would come back here if an artist I loved was on the bill, but I don't see myself coming here for any random shows or for musicians I just sorta care about. The Bluebird is spectacularly awesome. I've seen 3 shows here and I've love it each time. In terms of parking, after hours you can park in the lot across the street. It's true the neighbors are a tad bitchy about parking, so you have to know which streets are ok to park on, but it's never more than 2 blocks away. The bathrooms are clean, the staff and bartenders nice, the drinks strong and the acoustics excellent. Also, whoever books these bands has fricken amazing taste. If I were not a grad student with limited funding, I'd go every week. My favorite thing about the BlueBird is the great bar/restaurant scene on the little 4 block section of Colfax. Lots of cool places to hangout and eat before and after the show. Yea! Love it. read more
