I have been here a few times when there have been no to very little customers. Upon walking in, the associates do not acknowledge me - no "hi" or "I'll be with you in a minute" After recently being in the store and having another one of these experiences, I looked up the product that I was going to purchase. Richard is the best in all the land! There, I said it. Popped in there early Saturday morning. Nice greeting. Been trying to find a lipstick forever. See three. Ask for help. Richard sits me right down, looks at the three, picks one and it's perfect. Fastest I have ever found a new color I adore (Laura Mercier). He then shows me a trick to make my eyes pop. Fantastic. No pressure. Looking around, Rachel (their face products expert) asks me questions about my face, what products I use, etc. Tell them. With no attitude she says, I think I have something you might like more. This is what it does, and here is a week sample to try it. No drama. So then I decide I need a new foundation and concealer. He tell me about Bobbi Brown's new product. Love it -- his application is flawless. Finally, he adds a gloss on top of that luscious lipstick, and I look fantastic. No pressure, no pain, lots of space to just play with products and look around. Never felt pressured, got no attitude at all (and you know I'm all about finding out if places are big girl friendly). I refuse to spend my hard earned coins with folks that aren't about serious customer service. Folks seem to forget big girls spend tons of money too! And I will call out bad service or creepy "you don't belong here" vibes. It is not a good idea to give me attitude. So, I will be back for my new face products. And make up. And facials. If you're like me and don't really like shopping at Ulta, but don't want to deal with Michigan Ave just to visit Sephora, check out Blue Mercury. They carry Nars, Trish McEvoy, L'Occitane, Laura Mercier, Fresh, Diptyque, and Creed, among others. The staff is very nice without being pushy. I love make-up and girly products so this store is great for me! The staff is attentive and friendly but not completly in your face. I have gone in before knowing exactly what I want (Laura Mercier products!) and walked out in 5 minutes, and other times I have been pampered by the staff with a whole make-up application at no cost. And you always walk out with free samples! On one occassion, I was looking for a new eye cream and an employee filled a mini-jar full of a sample bottle (probably worth $50!) and just let me have it "to see if I liked it". Great service! I love that you can mix and match products instead of buying just from one line (Fresh, for instance, has a store down the street but they carry this line here). If you are not used to buying high-end beauty products, the prices may seem a little high. I can always find something to buy here! read more

In a super cute space on Halsted, Blue Mercury has a great selection of top cosmetic and skin care brands; more of a hand picked selection than you would find in a department store or Sephora. I worked with the manager, Erin, to find a foundation. Not only did she take the time to apply her suggested foundation to my face, she used some great skin care products and did my eyes and lips as well (all without an appointment or cost). In a non sales-y or condescending way she explained the products and techniques to me. No matter how much you think you know about makeup and skin care, you can always learn more, and I did! In addition to the foundation and concealer I purchased, I left with samples of some much needed skin care products. I am already seeing results and cant wait to return to purchase them! read more

Yes, the makeup here is great-- but the real find is the spa in the back, where Betsy gives one of the best Brazilians in the city. Good Brazilians can either be fast or less painful, and she makes it the least painful it can possibly be. It takes about 20-25 minutes, but, Betsy does a great job and makes you feel comfortable. It's a great place to go for your first time. My only complaint is that because she uses the hard wax (which makes it less painful), the "look" doesn't last as long. The prices for Brazilians are pretty reasonable, however the prices for other services are a little higher than the norm. read more

I used to go to this store over four years ago on the East Coast. I loved it because it was a well-edited store with great lines...some of which I had never heard of before. After a four year hiatus (I stopped in this store once really quick before), I came back ready to spend lots of money...ok, my guy was willing to spend lots of money on me. Bonus! I know I have to be quick. He's willing to treat me to make-up for helping him do some painless jean shopping, so I don't want to blow it. I head to Bobbi Brown and tell the girl three things with the exact color I use. My guy makes a simple comment, and then says, "whatever she wants" and the girl (with a nice 'stache I might add) asks him, "if you're the expert?". Um, hello?! He just said, give her what she wants aka we are spending money and telling you the colors that we want (no "work" for you) and you make a smart ass comment?! I would've walked out then, but he wanted me to get what I wanted and I did too (not gonna lie). I go to Nars, I grab two things, again, just picking them up, not trying anything. We go to the register. He throws down his card, we chat. I don't look at the receipt and we walk out. I get home, and I only have the Nars stuff. If I would've looked at the receipt (why would I, I expect them to do their job and I'm not signing), I would've realized they forgot the other items. I'm annoyed and he's annoyed, I call because I might have time to rush back before our plans for the night. The girl who checked me out, lies to me, then continues to be rude. I am sad to report that Richard is not enough to have me continue shopping at this store. I have refused to enter this store since this past summer when the following happened: A friend and I wandered in. I was looking for some bronzer and lip SPF treatment, and my friend wanted to just browse. I looked for Richard, but I guess he was not working that day. Two sales associates were in the otherwise empty store. I inquired about a Bobbi Brown lip treatment. The salesperson said she is normally the Laura Mercier person, but she would check on the stock (oh, thank you, because I see that you are so busy with just me and my friend in the store). She took about 10 minutes to do this because she would get distracted with flirty banter with the other sales associate. Ten minutes later, she came back and said there were no more. Hm, okay. Good salespeople would suggest other products (I would think you'd want to score a sale) or take down my number to give me a call when the product came in. The browsing continued. The two sales associates then retreated into a corner giggling and flirting with one another. My friend and I were about to get a few Laura Mercier products but had some questions. The two sales associates were too into their flirting to even notice us trying to get their attention. Then we stood at the cash register for about 5 minutes. They finally looked up and scurried over. At that point, I put back the items and told them nevermind. We then left and went to the Benefit on Webster, where we ended up buying 7 products each because two sales associates spent the time to figure out what we were looking for, show us how to use each product, and then allowed us to think about what we truly needed. So, sorry Richard, but your staff has failed to impress me time and time again. You're not enough to get me to keep going back to Blue Mercury. read more

This place can give you a more personalized experience and a wider range of high end beauty products than any department store. While I appreciate their selection, e.g., Bobbi Brown, NARS, Laura Mercier, etc. I'm writing this review for their fabulous customer service. You can walk in looking like a tree-hugging hippie and come out a schmoozing yuppie in minutes. I left a star off because many of the products they offer can be purchased elsewhere. Can't believe it took me all this time to find this cosmetics store within walking distance of my job. I'd been going out of my way to get my Nars fix, when it was right there! I don't recall the name of the staff member helping me, but she found my color match immediately. That is a rare event for me. She also found me a dark, vampy, matte lipstick that was perfect for the event I was on my way to. And best of all, she wasn't overly pushy. When I'm done shopping, I'm done. I go here to get my Bumble and Bumble Curl Creme. It's really nice to have somewhere close to get it, instead of tracking down a salon that carries it. The sales people are nice and friendly, not pushy. They were also helpful in suggesting similar products when I expressed some dismay about my Bb usuals. I stopped in here with a friend last Saturday. We were just going in to look around, but after seeing the fantastic job that Becky did on 2 girls' makeup, we wanted our chance too. Becky was great in helping explain what to look for to complement our skin and eye color and advice on application. We were very happy with her. What wasn't so great was the facialist person who gave us such a hard sell as we are walking out of the store. For some reason this woman felt it was necessary to explain where the intersection of Addison and Southport is three times despite me telling her I knew where it was after the first time. She then continued to list off products, services and prices. It was very awkward because we never inquired in the first place. I think some of the other employees felt uncomfortable too. Went to Betsy for numerous waxes over the years. It seemed a bit pricier than other salons but she was super professional, clean, and made an unpleasant experience as painfree as possible. She even used a special kind of wax on my sensitive skin. Love her! I recently found out that Betsy is no longer at Blue Mercury. Sad. So I tried someone else who worked out ok but was no Betsy. The best (and most dangerous) part of this is that the salon has so many super nice products they sell including various make up lines, Kiehls, and Tan Towels. I'm never able to walk out of this place without buying more beauty products. NOTE: I have always been able to find street parking around Blue Mercury which makes it an easy visit. read more

My business has been earned back by one particular make-up artist at this location, Hyon Suk. My boyfriend definitely knew the way to my heart when he got me a make-up lesson and a generously-credited gift card to bluemercury for our anniversary this year. He said she had been super helpful with him, so I went in and scheduled my lesson with her. Hyon Suk was soooo sweet and actually listened to me as I explained that I don't really like to wear a lot of make-up, or look like I'm wearing a lot of make-up. She picked out some colors and everything she did in the lesson looked great with my hair and skin tone. She helped me pick out nice brushes and some Laura Mercier products to lay a good make-up base. Any woman knows that a good make-up application starts with awesome (albeit typically very expensive) brushes. She also introduced me to the most amazing concealer on the planet from Bobbie Brown. If you come here, and you have any questions, ask for Hyon Suk (pronounced Haan Sook)!!!! She is super friendly, knowledgeable, and not at all pushy. She really wants you to go home happy with your purchases, which is good since I think their return policy is store credit only! :) My faith in bluemercury has been restored! Thank you Hyon Suk!!! I went to Blue Mercury 3 weeks before my wedding to do a trial with Richard (the store manager) for my wedding... he told me that he usually doesn't work on Sundays, but that he would make sure he'd be in to do my makeup for my Sunday wedding, which I thought was incredibly nice. One week before the wedding, I called to confirm my appointment and the woman who answered told me that I wasn't int he appointment book and that Richard would call me back. When he did, he told me that the woman I spoke to had me down for the wrong day, and that he'd DEFINITELY be there to do my makeup. He then gave me his cell phone number and told me to text him if I needed anything. So on the day of my wedding, I texted Richard that I would be there in about an hour and when I arrived, I was told that Richard was away for the weekend on a vacation! I then called the cell number he gave me and left a message with my number, but he never called! So after meeting with him for a trial, confirming with him, texting him, and calling him on the cell phone number he gave me, he decided to go on vacation without telling me and without even warning the shop that I was expecting him! The shop employees had no clue that I was even coming! And, I might add that he never called me to acknowledge that he'd been in the wrong either. Nice service recovery! Thankfully, I was a pretty laid back bride, and fortunately there was an amazing makeup artist there named Isidro who totally saved the day! I told him what I wanted and he did a WAY better job than Richard had done... Of course it's practically impossible for a bride to look bad on her wedding day since we are all smiling constantly, but thanks to Isidro, I & everyone else thought I looked completely amazing! I am completely torn about this shop because Isidro was so amazing and Richard was such a terrible manager, so I thought I needed to make known what a nightmare it was to trust Richard. I think I will go back, but I'll definitely try and go on a Sunday, when I can be confident that Richard won't be there, especially if he says he will be. read more

After increasing frustrations shopping at Sephora and various make up counters, I visited the Blue Mercury store on Halsted this past Sunday. I was looking for someone to help me find eye makeup for spring as I typically default toward my comfort zone and choose shades of neutral colors. I was warmly greeted by Marla who didn't hesitate choosing colors that looked great on me. She spent a lot of time showing me how to apply the different shades and recommended other products (blush, lip color, etc.) that would work well with my coloring. I never felt pressured to purchase anything and Marla was great suggesting I keep using products I am currently using that I cannot purchase at Blue Mercury. I really got the feeling she cared about me looking good rather than just making the sale. I will continue to go back to her and recommend others visit her if they are not sure what they want, but are looking for a 'change'. Unfortunately I was not able to spend a lot of time in the store after working with Marla. However, when I inquired about Darphin products, the women who rang up my purchases gave me a large sample of the product I was interested in to try it out. This amount will hopefully allow me to view results long term vs. just a few days. Overall it was a great experience and I will definately go back. read more

I cannot get enough of this place. I used to come here merely to purchase make up. The staff is very knowledgeable, helpful, and not at all pushy. They will happily do your make-up and then suggest the key products that you could purchase. As other reviewers have mentioned, Richard is divine. Their esthetician Rachel stopped me one day, and questioned whether or not I dye my eyebrows as I have very obviously bottled red hair. I've been going back to her for a year now for both waxing and eyelash tinting. She. Is. Amazing. She knows what's she doing, couldn't be nicer, and understands the limits of a bank account. She always does a stellar job and loads me up with samples before I walk out the door. If I had expendable income, I would most likely spend every day lying on her chair having facials. If you're someone who likes being attacked when you walk in the door by three or four different sales people (in the span of 10 seconds - seriously!), then you'll love Blue Mercury. I, on the other hand, am not one of those people. I have been to this location numerous times and every time peppered with the persistent "can I help you" by more than one sales person. I totally get being helpful and available, but there is a difference between being truly helpful and intrusive. This place is intrusive. I welcome and appreciate a helpful sales staff, but do NOT appreciate feeling like I'm being surveyed by a pack of wolves waiting to swarm in for the kill. Have some decorum, people. I will stick to other boutique cosmetic shops and shopping online, where I can get the help I may need or want when I need or want it. Beauty products at there finest . Clean and lovely displayed items . I've been working in the beauty industry for 22 years, and never felt such disappointment after entering this place. One your greeted my smiling faces , but when I knew what I was looking for I didn't expect such a reaction from the Beauty advisor. I knew I wanted the Orbe hair airbrush root touch up. I as a salon owner know you can accidentally buy tester if you don't look are see the clear packaging around the bottle etc . She ran over and pulled the items without a word Of what she was doing . I went into Blue Mercury this afternoon after I swore I'd never return after a bad experience with one of the sales staff members months ago. I was running errands and found myself needing a product from Laura Mercier and I happened to be on Halsted Ave. There were no other shoppers in the store, two sales people and they did not acknowledge me until after a long 5 minutes. The one sales guy who is always there let out a snotty, "Hello" and proceeded to ignore me some more. I knew what I needed to get, walked up to the sales girl (the SAME snotty girl who made me stop going there in the first place!) told her what I wanted. I asked her a question about one of the products and she gave me the SAME condescending attitude I first experienced. I wanted to turn around on my heel and walk out as I did the last time, but instead I proceeded to check out only because I really needed the items I bought. The sales girl was cold and did not give me any samples. With all of the choices of places to buy make-up in this city, why would I return to this snotty stuck up shop?
