Food: Saturday night I ordered off the daily Special menu carbonara pasta made in lobster sauce..like no "other " Say the menu. Also with king crab meat and lobster bits. $60.00 no soup, salad included. One buttery bun Sounds great!, we ordered a drink while waiting. I've been here more times than I can count. It's a fun experience for sure and the food is usually decent. The garlic rolls are so incredibly delectable! It's got the same kitschy vibes and decor as always- but I miss the waitstaff wearing neon running shorts and windbreakers (iconic). The most recent visit was unsurprisingly outrageously expensive- the king crab dinner- one of the most popular dishes- is $111 (one hundred eleven) For 18 oz. I remember when it was $50 The garlic blue crab claws are just as good as ever (if not also marked up too) and the mai tai is excellent. This was my second visit to Bob Chinn's - I'm not much into crab but my wife seems to like the place. I had the Calamari which was good, the Seafood Gumbo which was okay with a few long lego blocks of some kind of seafood, and was cajoled into the King Crab Carbonera when I said I was ordering steak as I had the crab last time and was not impressed. The gumbo was definitely not up to New Orleans standards, and the carbonera was nothing like what I expected - it was heaping mounds of something like fried rice which may have had crab in it but I really couldn't see any pieces of crab and it mainly gave the impression of bacon. There was way more than I could eat, but I didn't bother taking any of the leftovers home. Really my second visit was begrudging as my first visit wasn't a stellar experience - both times I went because my wife seems to like the place, but it's just not for me. I just find Bob Chinn's to be a bad value - the prices aren't that bad, but the food just doesn't measure up to what they charge. read more

Bob Chinn's has been a staple for fresh seafood and delicious offerings for decades. Since the pandemic, as well as with Bob's passing, the menu has gotten smaller. While there are some offerings I miss immensely, e.g., Early Bird dinner special - dozen oysters or plate of medium boiled shrimp with each entree ordered, the fish nugget appetizer, etc., many of the tried and true offerings still exist. Some may be seasonal but that had always been the case. Service was fantastic par usual as well. I noticed that while the foot traffic and wait time isn't as high or prevalent as it once was, it makes it easier to show up and be immediately seated. Try the ahi tuna seared hot plate with brown sauce, onions and mushrooms (or just onions or mushrooms) - thank me later. Chargrilled fish is always bomb as well! I like less salt, but it was still really good. The waiter gave us great suggestions on food. He was attentive and refilled our water frequently! With a "dockside" interior aesthetic set in an endless landscape of chairs and tables, Bob Chinn's could easily be mistaken for a kitschy joint and set expectations for soggy veggies and rubbery seafood where the staff could care less. This is nothing further from the truth. First, the service is always impeccable. The wait staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and downright cheerful. This place was saved on my Chicago suburbs list for a long time and we finally made it out there for my mom's birthday. Reservations were easy to make through Yelp for our table for 6. The restaurant is huge and it was nicely decorated for Christmas! We were seated quickly by the end of the restaurant, it was like a extension. My mom didn't like where we were being seated and they quickly sat us in comfortable booths in the main restaurant section. We ordered shrimp and fish entrees. Everything was delicious. We were nervous about ordering crab because the market price was a little expensive but we'll save it for next time. They also gave my child a free hat at the end of the meal through the gift shop. Bob Chinn's is a Chicagoland seafood institution. While there are plenty of other seafood spots located all over Chicago, there's no denying the charm and family friendly atmosphere of Bob Chinn's. The seafood is always fresh, the mai tais are always strong, and the flavors are simple but delicious. The king crab legs were so meaty and so sweet tasting. Once you try king crab legs it's so hard to eat any other seafood. The scallops simply melted in my mouth and were cooked to perfection. And who doesn't love unlimited garlic rolls with real chunky garlic. If you have the means to get to Bob Chinn's if you're ever in Chicagoland, you definitely need to give them a try! read more

I wanted to love this place so much for nostalgic reasons. We went last night for my nieces 16th birthday. The restaurant reminded more of something you'd see at great America than what I remembered. That aside, our server was attentive to the point of being in an obvious rush, and the restaurant was far from busy/crowded. The "lobster bites" are nothing more than $50 odds and ends from a crab leg. We ordered filets and steaks prepared medium rare and received comically overcooked hickey pucks cuts of meat. After sending them back they returned with (2) instead of 3 filets in one case. For the prices here I expected SO much more and was severely disappointed. We've always gone out for lobster tail at least once per summer. I skipped last summer because the previous summer was so awful. I'm happy to say we went today and it was pretty good. Food was superior and the waitstaff were excellent. I'll try it again in a few weeks. The secret to Bob Chinn's has always been consistency. You can't go wrong here. They just opened back up this week (Feb 7, 2022) after being closed for a month and a half. We had a great time and the food is still great as it's always been. We ordered a bunch of appetizers; scallops, calamari and a sushi lobster roll then we had clam chowder. Our entrees were excellent too; swordfish from Hawaii, Florida Grouper and Asian basa stuffed with crab meat and hollandaise sauce. All fish was received that day and you can tell in the taste it's ALL fresh! Great spaced tables and our waitress Jackie did a great job of timing all our food and drinks perfectly. Have been supportive this restaurant for over 40 years. Have visited over 500 times, conservative estimate, and have enjoyed great times and the fantastic food. However, over the last year it just isn't the same. On my recent visit I ordered Halibut Bobs version which I've had many times. It was over cooked and the sauce was flavorless. It's obvious they are cutting corners. The fish was $35. I understand that the price of food has increased but the month before the catch of the day was $30. Last year it was $20. The salad bar was $16. When I asked why it had increased so much a manager replied... my cost of lettuce has increased 400%? In any case my bill with an iced tea, tip and tax was $70. For Lunch! No wonder the last 4 times I've been there for lunch the place was almost empty. In closing I seriously hope that Marylynn pays some close attention to the restaurant and makes some changes. 12/30/23 Brought my cousin here on our most recent visit to celebrate his 40th birthday along with my uncle and nephew. We had another fantastic experience! Service, value, and food quality are consistently exceptional. Arrived early for our Saturday night (holiday) reservations and hostess was happy to adjust our time and easily accommodated our early arrival. Our server Nichol C was genuinely engaged with our group and helped guide us through the menu to help insure our absolute satisfaction- her suggestions were spot on. Her support team was prompt, timely, and friendly as they assisted dinner service. Drove about an hour and nearly 60 miles each way to dine here and would do it again in a heartbeat. As one who is involved in the restaurant business for over 30 years, I am surprised they are still open. I ordered fresh King Salmon. This was tasteless, dull and seemed frozen. I sent it back. I ordered the blackened Halibut. It came out thin, dry and tasteless. For the price they should be ashamed of themselves. Overall, the casual experience was disappointing, and the quality was subpar. The garlic rolls were as garlicky and buttery as I remember, and I ordered the grilled halibut which was amazing. Probably the best halibut I've had in my life. I was looking forward to trying Bob Chinn's because I love seafood (and I'm Cantonese) but I was somewhat disappointed with how outdated the restaurant felt. The service was excellent but the ambiance and the food was lacking. The rolls they serve are so hard, dense, and oily.. drenched in garlic oil. The famous mai tai was not good at all... tasted really bad actually. Salt and pepper shrimp is served with a cocktail sauce which was interesting but the shrimp could have been crispier and needed more salt. I liked the flavor of the Cantonese style lobster but it was not very hot when served and the lobster was over cooked. The snow crab legs were the best part - fresh, easy to crack, deliciously simple, served with butter and just had to ask for lemon. Not sure if I'd come again. read more

I was in Deerfield a few weeks ago for a business trip and came here for dinner with my colleagues. Frankly, I wasn't expecting much being that it's in Deerfield (#NYCsnob), but I was completely surprised and blown away by how delicious and satisfying this dinner was. The interior looks kind of like those seafood restaurants I've been to in City Island in the Bronx, so nothing outstanding but the ambiance definitely makes it clear what you're there for. On my way to the restroom, I saw one of the tables had a Lazy Susan... totally unexpected, but effective if you were to come with a large group and had to (unfortunately) share dishes. We started with their gratis rolls slathered with fresh garlic and oil... OMG, I can eat baskets and baskets of this alone and leave happy. As it is, I ate two rolls as "carb conscious" as I tried to be. #NOREGRETS. (All that garlic though, it's a good thing I wasn't here on a date.) For drinks, I ordered their so-called "Famous" Mai Tai... I usually don't drink sweet drinks like maitais nor do I order things just cuz an establishment self-proclaims that it's famous... but I figured, why not? I asked our very friendly server if it was a very sweet cocktail as I can't tolerate sweet drinks at all and he very kindly offered to get me a taste. I accepted and was pleasantly surprised by how well balanced it is - it's a nice mix of slightly sweet and tart. I'm pretty sure they're made in huge batch since he was able to offer me a sample... which I'm usually also not a fan of, but this drink was delicious and I give them a stamp of approval on their proclamation that it is famous (for whatever little that stamp is worth - ha). The drink is served in a plastic cup with the Bob Chinn's logo on it which you can take with you as a souvenir. For my entrée, I ordered the 20oz Alaskan "Red" King Crab Legs steamed with a side of green beans and fries. It comes with two legs, which at first I was disappointed by and thought I'd be still hungry after... but I was pretty full after 1 leg! I had forgotten how delicious and sweet King Crab legs are... and now I'm salivating as I write this from NY ($&@#!). It was perfectly prepared and the meat was tender and succulent. The green beans were surprisingly delicious. I think they're sautéed rather than steamed? The fries were just alright though. Also, I want to point out that the service was on point. Our server was very busy that night but he was on top of everything, at the very least acknowledging that he'd get to us as soon as he's able if he was helping someone else. And he helped each of us to crack the crab leg, a lesson we all needed. ^^ Overall, if you can't tell by this glowing review already, had an excellent dinner here and if I am ever in this area again, will definitely be coming to dine here again. read more

Guava juice-- different than what I expected. Probably cuz it's fresh. I didn't like it at first, since it had an odd flavor, kinda like my first impression with papaya. But it grows on you, and I liked it by the end! Hubby loved it from the start. Garlic rolls-- these are so good drenched in butter or olive oil and the garlic and spices on top, I always remember Bob Chinn's garlic rolls! Lobster-- so fresh and juicy. We got the red skin potatos and green beans as sides. These taste super good with the Bob's salt mix!! I loved the texture of the red potato. Green bean was really fresh and crunch, but I think I preferred more of the soft type. Lobster roll and caterpillar roll-- lobster meat is tender and sweet. Rice was seasoned sweet just right! The rice puffs were a great addition for the texture. I was a bit disappointed with the lack of unagi in caterpillar, but it still tasted great. Hawaiian ahi poke bowl-- beautifully presented. The ahi tuna is fresh and marinated to a nice sticky consistency. My hubby didn't like the texture said it was like jello, but I thought it was just fine, but I think it would've preferred the cuts to be bigger. The mixed ginger and scallion in with the poke gave it has a very Chinese flavor profile, which I was pleasantly surprised. Paradise pie-- this is to die for. The purple color is mesmerizing, but the taste is even better. Very creamy and coconuty, both the whipped cream and the filling. I wondered if they made their own whipped cream with coconut cream. I ended up ordering another slice to go. They don't have Asian teas, but do offer a selection of Tazo tea bag. Overall the price wasn't bad for the quality of seafood.
