What a cool little concept Boba Up is. Build your own boba. My daughter found this in her endless watching of IG reels along with other places around Seattle in plans for a short trip up there for her spring break. Boba Up was a definite stop for her. Boba Up is right by the University of Washington campus and probably a pretty smart location for college students. Grab a cup, including one that would break your bladder (my daughter wanted that, but that wasn't happening). Fill in your boba, jelly or custard, or all of the above and then add your beverage or beverages of choice that also includes a sugar syrup, frozen beverages and various coffee or teas. You could make one interesting drink if you choose. I just kept it simple, a Thai iced tea with a strawberry freeze float on top, no boba. My daughter went more complicated and enjoyed whatever it is she got. The prices weren't bad for the average college student and they had food options as well. [[HIGHLIGHT]]She found something cool and kitchy.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Enjoy, and support local.

This is one of my favorite bubble tea spots in Seattle since it's all self serve. There's a wide varity of jellies and puddings to add, fruit teas, slushies, and milk teas. Love the split cup for bobafest every year! [[HIGHLIGHT]]This spot is lovely and I always enjoy coming in to try the different teas when I'm in the area.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There's so many it's hard to decide. I wish they could do split cup year round or perhaps offer it for special events more frequently than yearly! Absolutely loved this make your own boba shop. So many flavors, add-on and amazing staff. Someone's little one made a mess and the staff politely asked everyone to be careful and cleaned it up in a jiffy. It was my first experience making my own boba. A DIY boba bar!? The stuff dreams are made of! Boba Up is really fun. Loved sampling the drinks before I decided on the brown sugar tea with boba. Came for boba fest this year! They do the self serve split cups during boba fest, so we had to come and check it out. It was pretty busy with a line out the door when we arrived. We paid for our split cup and got in line for the self serve station. Ambiance is cute! I'd imagine it's much more pleasant on a normal day. Lots of seating inside and outside. I appreciated that employees were cleaning, mopping and maintaining the boba areas. I got the Hokkaido milk tea with boba and the oolong milk tea with pudding. The overall quality of the boba was just ok, on the harder side. The teas tasted good and I appreciated they weren't too sweet, I definitely felt caffeinated.

Woah, I haven't seen a self serve bubble tea place in a long time! The last one I went to in San Jose closed after only a year in operation, so I was excited to see one in the U District. Ordering here is pretty simple - go to the front counter, select the desired cup size, then off to the self serve section. There are something like 20 different drinks to choose from and mix, and a bunch of different toppings to add. They even supply a plastic glove and small sample cups to try as many of the drinks and toppings as desired! I especially loved how there were descriptions of each drink hung right above the dispenser, listing both the tasting notes and potential allergens. It's pretty thoughtful since most other boba places are black boxes when it comes to what actually goes into the drink. Regular ($6.34) - They have suggested drink ratios printed on the cup itself - about 2cm up for the toppings, 5cm for light ice, and 8cm for regular ice. Like most people, of course, I completely ignored the recommendation and filled my cup with a massive amount of boba to start. After sampling a couple of teas, I eventually went with the Oolong, which is delightfully roasty and toasty and isn't totally overladen with creamer. While they presweeten the tea, it's only at around 50% sweetness when compared to most boba shops. For those who want it even sweeter, there's a fructose dispenser to the side to sweeten to preference (although it was out of order when I visited). There's also an option for those who think the pre-mixed drinks are too sweet: there are dispensers for unsweetened black and green tea at the end of the row to dilute to liking. After sampling the boba, I found it to be a bit on the firm side, even while soaking the in the warm liquid container. Fearing the pearls might firm up too much, I went with the drink with no ice at all, and while the boba did harden up a bit, they were still pleasing enough to chew. Milk Tea Rating: 4/5 Boba Rating: 4/5 At the end of the day, the drinks here are not the best you can get in the area, but this is such a unique place to visit that I can't help but give it a 5. I'm usually a boba snob, but I will definitely be back just so I can sample other drinks and try to create my own perfect concoction. My first boba experience has been at this place. The best thing about this place is their self serve option. You can make your own boba by mixing and matching based in your interests. I haven't seen this self serve option anywhere else so far. The service is good. Close proximity to the university. The ambiance is very cute. Overall, a decent place to try out boba. How I heard of this place: We hosted an exchange student for nearly a full year, and this was his go-to for Bubble Tea. It was high time we sampled his favorite spot in town. Type of cuisine: Bubble tea, slushes and smoothies, as well as a handful of savory Asian-inspired food options, as well as fries. Ambiance: Cute and quaint, the inside screams kawaii. Pink decorations throughout echoed the cherry blossom festival at the University of Washington just up the road. The space is otherwise dark and dipped down a small set of stairs off of The Ave, not allowing for much light to stream through the front windows. Seating is available throughout the center of the room, tables/chairs somewhat crowded for the packs of people that must occupy the place on occasion. Around the perimeter customers first pay for their beverage size then make their way around, wearing a provided plastic food glove to select their favorites among the dozen or so available teas, milk teas and slushes. Also available to serve yourself is the selection of jellies and boba, pudding and popping boba to the far right. What I ordered: I selected the smallest size, likely about 16-ounces, and did a combination of the taro slush and the pineapple-coconut slush, adding popping strawberry boba as well as mango and rainbow jellies. What I loved: It's great that they allow for sampling, too (only after purchase)! We had a great time trying new-to-us flavors, and figuring out which combinations would make a great treat on a crisp spring day after viewing the cherry blossoms in The Quad. Why I loved it: It was easy and quick, we never felt rushed, and the young man at the counter was very friendly and helpful, quickly assisting us to seal our beverages. Cost: High

We love how we can choose how much ice or toppings we can put in. In addition, if you love to add more syrup or vise versa the drink only then it's a win win for everyone . The ambiance is as busy as it can be because it is in the middle of the university campus right across the school. Service wise you pretty much serve yourself . Although, you have to buy the cup you wanted first and pick from 16-32 oz. However, you can also order ones that they can make for you as their special. In conclusion, I hope they make one in federal way south area, because it's really good .

A pretty fun experience at a decent price. I like that they tell you exactly what's in it, including the level of sweetness and which type of tea base. The food is alright but not worth it for the price. The cream cheese wontons were undercooked, which was baffling since they only need to be fried for a few mins. Boba Up is a tea shop that has brand new operation principles and favorable geographical location. Three days ago, one of my good friends took me in this shop and highly recommend me to have a drink there. There's no denying that the staff was nice, polite and enthusiastic. With the help and guide of him, I tried to mix a tea beverage by myself. (I fill it with jellies, mango and taro) Actually, I'm not a bubble tea lover before and have worries about its taste. Favorite boba tea shop outside of the international district. It's self serve done right. Gloves are provided for all as well as hand sanitizer. Love that they have allergen details on each machine...but mostly, I love the sample cups and the ability to mix flavors. Try the rose milk tea mixed with the brown sugar...perfection! read more

Their boba is mediocre at best. I definitely had better milk tea at other boba shops. The tapioca was very bland. I got brown sugar milk tea which tasted like regular black tea with milk. Their fruit teas taste better and something I'd recommend and might come back for but definitely NOT the milk tea. This is a good concept, I have only seen one shop like this in California so I was impressed to see one in Washington. The price is pretty good, you pay per cup and being that it is sel served you can get unlimited toppings. The drinks are pretty good, but nothing to rave over. By far the MOST DELICIOUS BUBBLE TEA you will have in seattle. From the minute you walk in the guy at the counter greeted us, showed us how to make your own bubble tea . He showed us each step of the way and gave us tons of samples! That's one of the cool things they do and aren't super stingy with their samples for new people nor are they rude at all. The serve yourself part of Boba Up is fun, but outside of that, I would not recommend it. The teas are waaay to strong, and they don't really have many tea options. The only one I like is the Thai tea and even that has a weird taste. The boba has been hard in the middle all four times I've been (yuck), and it's fairly expensive for what it is. If I'm going to have a sweet treat I'd like it to taste good. So no more Boba Up for me :( read more

I really enjoyed the idea of having self serve milk tea so the patrons can have their own decision on how much toppings they want. However, the tea here is close to the worse I have ever had when I was sampling the different teas. I came here soon after it opened and I was kind of disappointed. I got the Thai tea with boba. The boba was hard and tasteless, and the drink itself didn't really taste right at all. It did not taste fresh but I did go later at night, and I guess that happens when the drinks and toppings sit out for hours. read more

My dreams of having a whole cup of toppings can finally come true. I would recommend the passionfruit green tea, and the Yakult green tea tastes just like the real thing. Their melon slush even tastes like the Melona popsicles. It's convenient that you can adjust the ice and sweetness levels yourself. Other places might charge extra for no ice but not here. You can even add unsweetened tea and fresh milk to your drink. You're really in control of your tea. They also don't charge extra for toppings so you can get as much as you'd like (as long as it fits in your cup). read more

the experience is 5 stars. i absolutely love the idea of self serve boba, it's so fun. the interior is pretty large with lots of seating. the boba tasted fresh and perfectly cooked. i also had some of the mango jelly, which was fresh and delicious as well. the problem really arose at the tea. while i enjoyed that you can sample the teas, they all tasted rather bitter, like they had been out too long. i ended up getting the mango green tea, which was good but had a little bitter after taste. all in all i would return if i was in the area. read more

I hope they work things out! I would have purchased two drinks if I could have substituted the dairy for lactose free.

Wintermelon Milk Tea - they got the wintermelon taste down, it's just excessively sweet. Good in a pinch or for a refresher. Bobalust opens up pretty late for a boba shop - most places start at noon or earlier, but for some reason BobaLust opens at 1PM. This particular location is depressingly dark inside with black painted walls and dark decor. That's a really interesting aesthetic choice (and not my favorite). OG Milk Tea, 50% Sweet, 50% Ice w/ Honey Boba ($6.50) - This tea has a strange harsh artificial taste. It's cloyingly sweet and tastes of a very overwhelming kind of flowery and fruity flavor. It doesn't seem to be from the tea and instead may be from either creamer or sweetener. It's overpowering, making the drink very difficult to sip on for my tastes. On top of this strange flavor is a heavy non dairy creamer aroma. It's added in such high quantities that the drink is thickened to almost a cream-like consistency, and has a slight bit of grittiness on the tongue. Even at 50% ice, there's a ton of ice in this drink. After drinking a bit, I went home and added in around 6 ounces of English Breakfast tea and it tempered things down enough to be pleasant. The boba isn't great either. They claim it's honey boba but while the pearls are very heavily sweetened in marinade, I can't detect any honey aroma whatsoever. The texture of the pearls are firm and almost gummy rather than being soft, chewy, and bouncy. Milk Tea Rating: 2/5 Boba Rating: 2/5 I'm still not impressed with this chain. There are way better options in the area for basic milk tea and boba. BobaLust remains in my bottom five boba shops in the Greater Seattle Area out of approximately 100 shops. Old Stove serves them with a savory watermelon sauce in addition to a traditional cocktail sauce--eaten together, it's a flavor explosion that I can't quite describe. We also enjoyed the garlic everything fries, which were delicious! We just had to try a flight to sample the brews. There are some really good beers available here, especially the Belgian blonde, citra pale ale, and the stout. I did not really care for the seasonal sour (grapefruit, I think)--to me, it just tasted like a sour and nothing more, but someone with more interest in sour beers would probably enjoy it just fine. Despite the busy night, our server checked on us regularly and was very personable, stopping to chat with us about the local sports scene. There's plenty to look at, inside and out. If you can snag a seat outside, you'll get to enjoy the waterfront. Inside, the decor is industrial but fun. Not sure if this runs all the time, but when we were there, the tvs were playing vintage beer ads, which was quite fun. They also sell some pretty good t-shirt designs. Overall, Old Stove Brewing is the perfect combo of good location, good food, and good beer. Definitely recommend a visit when in the Pike Place area!

My family and I have been coming here since it first opened, sometimes 3-4 times a week. In fact we drive 40 miles round trip to come. So I'm quite sad to say I would give five stars anytime up until today. We order two rainbow drinks which come with lychee jelly. We don't like the lychee jelly so we always ask for it to be substituted for the popping boba instead. I noticed the cashier was ringing it up as no lychee jelly "add" popping boba which was an additional $1.50 for the two drinks. I don't get why I could pay $4.00 for a cup and go add as much of whatever topping I want at the DIY bar. But if I'm paying $6.00 for a drink and just want to "switch" a topping (that I could add whatever amount I want for free with the purchase of a $4.00 cup) why am I being charged additional for it? The girl went to ask the manager and came back saying they told her anytime we "change" anything to the menu drinks there's an up charge. I understand Covid has hurt a lot of businesses and I totally get that. But if we're now being charged additional for something that we're nit getting additional of, I'll save the gas and mileage. We have a new DIY tea a mile from my house so I'll go there from now on. I'll come back to boba up maybe in the future but not for awhile because that just makes me mad. read more

Edited to include additional context after seeing business owner's response. Fun concept but mediocre, slightly over priced tea. Staff forgets order, doesn't even give me order number. Upon being asked 5-10mins later, a staff responds "let me check the kitchen" then later comes back to give me the order number. Which clearly indicates that the order has not been ready at that time. If not, why not bring the food or at least tell me that it is ready? Even if it has been seating on a counter for 10 mins as the business owner claims, I don't understand how batters would magically evaporate into the thin air xD. It appears that kitchen has an interesting take on popcorn chicken; dry chicken with only a skin of batter with burnt scraps of tea leafs. Boba Up is easily my kids' favorite bubble tea spot, and honestly one of the best things about it is how customizable everything is. They love being able to create their own drink combinations and try different toppings every visit. The topping selection has a really good variety, and everything taste great. Another thing we really appreciate is that the drinks themselves are not overwhelmingly sweet like many bubble tea places. The flavors taste cleaner and more balanced, and if you want extra sweetness, you can always add more yourself. My kids ask to stop by almost every time we're nearby, which probably says everything. Mediocre bubble tea on the Ave. Would NOT recommend the boba because it's old and soggy. The experience was fun but not worth the second trip here. read more
