5 year review. As a Mango King guy I always pick this place because of the flavor of the boba and mango ice cream. The issue I have is the establishment. This place could be the center of the community but don't offer SEATING TABLES. It would have been nice to walk in talk to a server, sit down and drink. Instead it's a cold nasty iPad asking for a 3 dollar tip. You make homemade Boba but the store feels nothing like home. It's fast food. In and out. When I am a repeated customer I want to know the server or they know me and have that relationship. I wonder if it's because of the laundromat next door don't want kids running around. Still there are ways to enforce or establish that. I'm calling y'all out because all that retail space is being wasted. Feel like I could just go to a vending machine put money in and spit out a drink. That's why I give 3 stars as a former loyal customer. Let's do better. My sister got a jasmine milk tea 50% but she said it still wasn't sweet enough, so get 75% sweet if you want that one. I'm glad I gave this place a second chance! Anything made from scratch and with love gets extra points in my book. -Handmade boba- You will notice that the boba isn't as dark as usual tapioca pearls. This is because there is usually coloring added to make boba the black/dark color we're all more used to. Bobaville's boba is more of a light brown, golden color. I also noticed that the boba isn't completely spherical- they're more flat with different sizes, which shows that they really do hand make their own tapioca dough before boiling. The boba is well made and it's on the softer, chewier side! A plus that it was nice and warm on the bottom when I picked up my drink. -Boba + Milk (50% sweetness)- This is essentially brown sugar boba with milk! The drink was light and creamy with a velvety caramel flavor. It was definitely sweeter than I was expecting even at 50% but it was still delicious! Great non-caffeinated option. -Store ambience and service- If you don't want to talk to a cashier, there is an iPad ordering station on the side for self-ordering! Went for Dessert Food - 5/5. Classic milk tea had a great balance of creamy and sweet with a hint of the astringent tea. Hong Kong milk tea was a level above on the bitter scale, but good for those that like the evaporated milk flavor. True to their name, their boba was fantastic. The texture was chewy with a good level of firmness in every bite, just the right amount of sweetness to not overwhelm the flavor of the milk tea and had a clean finish after every boba. Two words: HANDMADE BOBA. All right! So the boba here is not DARK. It's actually a very light tan/caramel color. The boba is tender and soft and chewy! But not in a gummy way like other boba. There is a very subtle caramel flavor with a delicate floral flavor which is refreshing and light compared to the deep rich and intense flavor or dark boba. I got the Mango Summer Tea because I was feeling fruity. 25% sweet. The acidity of the lemon was very apparent. It also had some floral notes to it! Very fragrant. Floral notes in both tea and boba...this drink REALLY toes the line between tasty and soapy. Floral flavors can taste like soap when used with a heavy hand. Albeit delicious, I must say this handmade boba comes at a price...it is $6.50! Worth a try but not a place for your regular boba fix. This place is for variety and novelty. Next time if I am around the area....I think I will get the Classic Black Tea 50% and see what I think about the boba! Also this place is tiny so waiting can be tough. They had a touch screen kiosk to order and pay from and then you pick up your drink at the counter. I went to Bobaville for the first time since coming here a few years ago when it first opened. The only real difference is that you now order on the kiosk instead of a cashier taking your order. Other than that, the quality of the drinks has been relatively the same. I ordered the black sugar matcha (which looks more aesthetically pleasing when you first get it, but I waited too long to take a pic so all the black sugar sank...). I got it 75% sweetness which is perfect because the black sugar is plenty sweet itself and also 16oz which is relatively small. I got it with no boba, but I have had it before and it is more unique than other places texture and taste wise as their niche is handmade boba. The total came at $5.75 which is pretty standard nowadays. Drinks are also not sealed. Overall a decent boba shop and the baristas are very friendly in my very limited interaction with them. Don't skip on Bobaville! I've been scouring different boba shops trying to find my favorite stop and we may have a contender! Outside on the storefront, they advertise their specialty - handmade boba! That's definitely something to draw you in. For my first visit I got the classic black milk tea with boba and my partner tried the green milk tea with boba. Both teas have prominent tea flavor and you can definitely tell it's homemade and that they use real tea. The handmade boba is amazing! It's super soft with enough Q. When you get a sip and chew on the boba last, the boba by itself tastes like the flan you get at Asian markets. It's kinda custards and sweet. Bobaville got my attention and I'll definitely be back to try their other drinks! Pre-covid review. Easily one of our favorite boba places in the bay area. Their boba is housemade which makes me feel less guilty about grabbing a drink. We tend to go for the non-fruit options and have tried their Thai tea, Roasted Oolong, Black tea and Matcha. Everything is good but our go to is the Thai Tea with 50% sweetness and less ice. I would like to try their Taro tea sometime and also always see lots of Mango tea orders being served in the store. Tea is the perfect consistency, not watered down like in some other places. Came on a warm Saturday afternoon and found Bobaville pretty busy, though most of the crowd was composed of 1 party. A quick look through the menu and I decided upon the black sugar matcha latte with homemade boba. On first sip, I liked that it wasn't too sweet considering I made no adjustments, but it was pretty tepid on flavor. When I vigorously swished the drink, I would get hints of matcha, but the deep molasses/caramel flavor I expected from the black sugar was completely absent in my opinion. It also lacked a good deal of creaminess for being a latte - unfortunate. As for the boba, I appreciate the effort that went into making homemade boba.....but a good portion of my boba was basically one giant clump. Additionally, though the boba had a nice chew, it was also pretty flavorless. I'm not too sure what sweetener they use, but it likely wasn't Muscovado sugar (or if it was, it wasn't enough). I was hoping this drink will bring back the memories of being in Hong Kong. However, after the first two sips, i wanted to toss my drink. Not only was it watered downed, but it had no tea taste. I'm not sure was it the type of tea leaves, but I'm used to my tea being strong and fragrant, and it surely wasn't fragrant. I have to question those who liked the drink and wonder have they even been to Hong Kong. Any cafe in HK was better than this, and it's really cheap now, so y'all should book a flight and try it. I saw clusters of people waiting outside and saw the Yelp reviews were good, so I decided to stop by and try some drinks. We got the classic milk tea and boba + milk. I ordered on the tablet inside and waited outside. 15 minutes later, I went inside to check on the order and they said they had thrown it away because they thought it was a duplicate and said there was also a problem with the ordering system. They put priority on my order and I got my drinks another 5 minutes later. I also wish they called the orders by name instead of order number - the tablet already made me write my name, so why not call my order by name? I was excited with anticipation. Unfortunately the boba for both the brown sugar and regular was OK. Not stale. Just meh. It was chewy but with no satisfactory "ahhh" resistance. There wasn't really much personality or character to it. The "boba + milk" milk part tasted like sugar milk - like the leftover milk you have when all the cereal is gone. Now some people may be really into that, but it just felt really sugary without much gratification and I'd rather save my calories for something else so I didn't finish my drink. Perhaps if I adjusted the sugar levels the drinks would be more tolerable, but it still doesn't make up for the boring boba. As the Taiwanese would say, it wasn't "Q" enough. read more
