Variety of food uses same base mixture from soup to rice dishes. Place is not well maintained and fixtures are old. It is not appetizing to eat inside. Bobo Cafe has been making some of the best Vietnamese food for over 25 years. They are down to the one restaurant in Auburn now. They are my favorite place to eat when in the area. The Bun dishes are my go-to dishes. You won't go wrong with anything you order. The place is family owned. They are the nicest people and always have a friendly greeting. They are in a building best described as a "tired" strip mall. The inside is very open. They also have a private party area. You are not there for the ambiance - you go there for some of the best Vietnamese food, generous portions and a very fair price. We should have turned around at the door. We walked in at noon on a Monday, not ONE person in the restaurant. One employee, order taker, cook and bus woman. WoW wOw WOW!!! Bobo Cafe is a local Vietnamese restaurant which offers authentic Vietnamese dishes in Auburn! I'm thrilled to find such a delicious Vietnamese place in this neighborhood. Despite the average three Yelp Star reviews, I decided to give it a try after a serious long hike in Auburn. Bobo Cafe totally exceeded my expectations and provided such a delicious, fresh, and traditional lunch. What a gem it is to be here in such a small town like Auburn. We ordered the vegetarian banh xeo, which is a Vietnamese crepe! I'm totally salivating writing this review thinking of the delicious, tasty, and crunchy crepe which was like a home cooked meal by my mama. The service is fantastic. We got seated at a perfect table with sun and a view. Water and coffee were soon on our table. The server was polite, friendly, and nice. It took a bit time as the crepes were prepared fresh and got to us sizzling hot, just the way I liked it! We were hungry but we did not mind to wait a little time. Just like how Danielle Steel put it: "Some things in life are worth waiting for." Overall, I enjoyed my dinning experience here and highly recommend this Bobo cafe. Try it. You will love it! I've been enjoying the great food and service along with the pleasant atmosphere at Bobo's Cafe for many years. It's always quiet and there is consistently good food at a great price. I like #53 which is a bbq pork over angel hair pasta with a little salad on the side. Sooo good! There's a yuummy fish sauce to pour over it and the service is great. The #62 is great too. It's a pork over noodles or rice with a great sauce over it. I take this one home for dinner. I can highly recommend this wonderful place and I know you will enjoy it. read more

Always the best since 1999!!! This is small town Auburn local food for 20 years. We all need to support the ones that have stayed around to allow you to experience authentic cuisine. This one happens to be Vietnamese. And it's GOOD! Today we stopped in for a to-go order of Shrimp Fresh rolls (#11) and Spicy lemon grass tofu with rice noodles (#77). These were made fresh while I waited in only a few minutes. Mai was there to greet me as she has been over the decades. Her sweet smile and kind personality is a breath of fresh air from so many chain type restaurants. This business is still family owned by the same original owners. The food was wonderful. I got boba here. That's what my review is on. Do not get boba here. The boba pearls were falling apart and the lady was supper unhelpful in providing info on what's in the drink. BOBO'S was my first go to Vietnamese food I ever had..This was many years ago..late 96 or so..,but after eating here all I ever wanted was more..It caught on as more restaurants like this one started to open in 2004 or so..Yum yum..super healthy and the fish sauce is amazing.. It's very healthy the pile meat on rice noodles yumm.. Obviously there is so much more to choose from ,but the bowls were amazing and filling..This place is a staple or restaurants of this choice.. The Crispy Spring Rolls will make you close your eyes and moan, the Charbroiled pork is juicy with a perfect charbroil, and they have a real talent with stir-fry! We used to go to its sister Bobo Cafe in Roseville, you know the one that used to be by Mervyn's? (I know, I am dating myself by telling you this!) Anyway, I went with my sister and a friend to check it out. They are in a low rent area of Auburn, so the number of customers that go in must sustain their business, not that there's a lot.... Now, to the food---we ordered from the lunch menu. A few stir fries and the Bobo's Cafe dish I haven't had in ages, the crispy noodles combination. They menu is your standard Vietnamese fare. They've got vermicelli and bahn mi, but if they went with just a little bit higher quality ingredients, they'd have more customers. The veggies were fine, but the chicken was a bit rubbery. (Side note: I did NOT get food poisoning!) The rice will go stale after a day, so just don't expect much when you go here. There's plenty of seating and it's clean, but again, don't expect a lot. read more

After spying Bobo across the way from another restaurant, wanting a good lunch of Vietnamese food, and hearing a friend recommended it a few weeks ago, my group decided to check it out. And never again. We entered into an impressively large interior rife with tables lined with shiny floral table mats, paintings of fish and other animals along the walls, and a row of old "Best of..." accolades next to the entrance. Yet, it was a ghost town. A single couple was seated in a booth but no one was there to greet or seat us. For a good few minutes we stood, approached a counter where menus were placed, grabbed two for a quick read, and sat ourselves down by the window. It was after that that our waitress came to offer water, took our order, and then left as quickly as she appeared. We ordered something akin to chicken and shrimp, stir-fried with some veggies in a brown sauce, and served with white rice (no alternatives offered); as well as a vermicelli bowl of lemongrass barbecued pork with eggrolls. Now what came has to be, sadly, some of the most disappointing/simply-bad food paid for. The stir fry - glossy/reflective and swimming in a sea of sauce - was bland and tasted heavily of corn starch with shrimp that were over-cooked. The vermicelli bowl was dry and equally as bland; specifically and unfortunately the pork and noodles themselves. Even the included side of fish sauce had hardly any flavor in it; requiring the entire thing to be poured into the bowl to get a touch of that lovely fishy-yet-sweet flavor. By the time everything was said and done, we simply wanted to pay our bill and leave. While the waitress was kind in their brief appearances, we left let down by the experience. read more

Good vermicelli bowl considering Auburn isn't exactly a hotbed of Asian cuisine. The vegetables were very fresh. Servings are generous though not enormous like some places. Service was prompt because we were the only people there. The place is large and clean, though the strip mall in which it is located is pretty seedy. We went to Bobo's cafe for lunch as we hadn't been in so many years and we used to go to the Bobo's in Folsom at least 10 years ago. We were so disappointed in the food! We ordered spring rolls with tofu and peanut sauce and we couldn't believe how everything inside the spring roll was white and tasteless! The inside consisted of mainly white rice noodles and one piece of iceberg lettuce. Yuck! Not one veggie inside. Usually spring rolls have shredded carrots, mint leaf or fresh cilantro and tofu but it was a white roll with white rice noodles which was amazingly tasteless with a not very good peanut sauce. Worst veggie spring roll ever. My daughter ordered beef with rice and veggies and the plate arrived with all the food cold. The veggies consisted of iceberg lettuce, shaved cold carrots, bean sprouts and a few sprigs of cilantro and the very few strips of beef didn't taste good. Not to mention the portion size was very small for the $13-$14 price tag. I had a chow Mein with veggies and shrimp but the only veggies I saw was a few slices of onions and very thin pieces of toothpick size carrots. The sauce wasn't very good and the shrimp had no taste. Well I heard they were back open again so I thought I would give it a shot. My wife and I used to frequent Bobo café in Sacramento and it was always a Favorites. However the auburn location fall short on a number of areas. The spring rolls consisted of rice noodles one piece of lettuce and some pork, there was no Thai basil no mint no carrot no mung bean sprouts. The soup also came without Thai basil, The broth was a bit week the meat was fair but not enough, and there was no tendon. Came in here on a very slow Friday around 330. I called in my order in advance, as we were running late and had some where we needed to be. I called around 3:10, The owner said they would be done in about 10 minutes. We ordered the shrimp spring rolls, so we had actually discussed between my husband and myself that we hoped they didn't leave the spring rolls sitting out, with the shrimp inside, on such a hot day because we would take about 20 minutes to get there, and they were to be done in 10. Walk in at 3:30, a bell jingles on the door to alert them of entry, I approach the register area. First thing I notice is a cot with a bunch of blankets and a pillow with a toddler sitting on it next to the register, watching an iPad. It was cute and kind of funny but maybe a tad unprofessional. The front area looked OK, clean and all but the back area behind the register, the counters were covered in junk. I think these parents probably put in a very long days, It almost appeared as though they lived there LOL. I saw boxes of cereal on top of the refrigerator in the back, both adult cereal and childrens cereal. Either way, I'm standing there easily for five minutes before anyone takes notice. At 3:35 a woman approaches me and tells me it will be an additional 10 minute wait. It had already been 25 minutes since I made the phone order. Since we were already running late, what should have taken a short amount of time ended up taking much longer. 15 minutes later, at 3:50 she brings out the spring Rolls. I have no idea what could possibly have taken from start to finish 40 minutes since there were literally only one set of customers in the whole restaurant! I thought the wait time was absolutely ridiculous. It was a phone order for goodness sake! We were told 10 minutes for goodness sake, not cool. As for the food, very interesting.. it didn't taste bad, it was just the manner in which they were rolled, how pencil skinny they were and how they were laid out. The flavor was there, but they were rolled very loose, and they were super thin, And each roll was cut into three pieces. Personally I would rather have my spring rolls come whole, so they don't fall apart. They cut theirs into threes, which made them practically disintegrate when you try to dip and eat them. All the filling kept pouring out with every dip, and because they were not wrapped individually, they were all sticking together which means you had to rip the thin rice paper apart to get a roll. I eventually just said to hell with it, and instead of ripping the paper by separating the pieces I just mushed two together (which oddly enough equaled to be about the size of a larger spring roll ha ha!) I don't expect great food in the Auburn area, I am pretty sure people out that way are just grateful to even have some cultural diversity in their choice of foods. And while the price point at $6 for 2 rolls wasn't bad, I can't say I would come back to this establishment. One thing I will note that I thought was pretty cool was they had a fairly large assortment of vegan options, not just vegetarian or for carnivores. read more

The 5 star reviews must be paid. This is literally the worst restaurant I have ever dined at, and I don't know how it's still in business. We stopped by on the way home from Tahoe. We love Vietnamese food, and you can barely call this Vietnamese food. "Chow mein" and "chicken and mushroom" are not Vietnamese dishes. Everything we ordered was so poor in quality, the shrimp was chewy and tasteless, the stir fry drenched in cornstarch slurry. The worst part was one of the Bun dishes has a large twisted metal staple in it. My sister in law spit it out after finding it in her mouth. They did remove it from the bill but what on earth?!!!!! Soups, salads, sandwiches, spring rolls, entrees and more. It's really easy to access (no stairs), clean restrooms and plenty of room for banquets, large parties, anniversaries, birthdays, or even a wedding rehearsal dinner. They also have take out.
