I happened to find Bob inadvertently through the need to replace a part. I was at a local parts store and they told me about his business. I stopped in to have something quickly repaired and I guess I hit it right because they helped me right away. I now know they schedule a week or two in advance and I know why. Bob is a friendly, straight forward, honest businessman. When you walk into his shop he is friendly and, as a female who has gone into many dishonest shops over the years who immediately assume I don't know anything, Bob was never that way. He spoke honestly and directly and stuck to the issue. His shop is like stepping back 30 years when people took more time to care about customers and their own integrity and quality of service, knowing the customer keeps their business alive and so does their reputation. I was so excited to visit Bob's Garage, with such great reviews - I was confident I was finally going to have a positive experience with my RAV4 service. Oh boy was I wrong...! I called, during business hours on a Monday, without a response. I was happy to be able to leave a voicemail, because I don't see any info on a website or details in general. I didn't hear back, so I took a risk and just drove in - since it was during business hours the next day (Tuesday). I was welcomed to a sign on the door that said they were closed. I could have walked to work, but instead had to deal with idiots on the road that took a trip that should take 5 minutes take 15 minutes. I got a call Wednesday - and it was during my work hours, so got about 10 seconds before distractions started coming in. I just confirmed he'll be there tomorrow (Thursday) and took my little time and attention to tell me he stopped letting people wait for their car four years ago. OK........!!! This meant I had no time to ask for a service menu. I figured there's no way he's more expensive than the dealership. This was for an oil change. It took more than three hours. And cost over $150!!!!!!!!!!!! I have NEVER paid that much for an oil change in my entire life and going to the dealership would have cost me HALF that much. I don't plan to ever return and I'm so sad. But to arrive that Thursday to a door that was locked, a sign I wasn't permitted to cross the yellow line (then asked to do so when my knee is worth over a quarter million dollars...if it's really related to insurance, that was a dangerous move on their part!!). I felt unwelcome and completely ripped off. Amazingly - spending me entire day at a dealership is more appealing. I'll spend less money, will be offered friendlier service and have WiFi so I can work from there as needed. They also have a very comprehensive inspection that was confirmed as not done in this service - which I wouldn't necessarily expect for an oil change; simply another reason to use the dealer. Who knew that is now more economical and comprehensive?!? What's happening?!? I recommend you keep looking! So sad to discover this, as I was looking so forward to supporting local when my service contract ended. But I cannot afford this ever again. read more

I had Bob's Garage work on my Saturn in February 2013 to replace a broken part. They did a good job at a fair price and got the job done ahead of schedule. I plan to bring my car back to Bob's Garage in the future. I don't think Bob personally did the work on my car, but I spoke with him before and after and he seems like a nice guy. Mechanic you can trust- I started taking my car to Bob's when I lived in Los Gatos and I still take it there although I've moved away. I know they will be honest and not take advantage of my ignorance with cars. Bob's has always done a great job of being truthful with me and keeping my costs down. I don't have to worry about made up problems or inflated prices like some other mechanics I've experienced. If you look at the negative review posted here, you'll notice it's actually complaining that Bob's did not charge ENOUGH and tried too hard to keep costs down. That is so rare in a mechanic. Once I even had a broken taillight on my other car when I drove my wife to pick up her car from Bob's. Bob noticed and came out to the parking lot on the spot to replace the taillight on my car completely free of charge!!! Now that is service. I'm giving a second star owing to a fair amount of my own naive stupidity in this situation. I have a 2005 PT cruiser that I've owned for roughly 2 months. I noticed the other day that my headlights were not working and I had to drive with my high beams on if I wanted to see at night and not get a ticket. I noticed Bob's Garage across the street when I stopped by the Los Gatos DMV to register my new (to me) vehicle after having it smogged. In addition to this headlight issue, I had a bunch of little annoying things I want fixed eventually, including my air conditioner. He quoted an our of labor to diagnose EACH problem! So, I said, "Nah. Just the lights then." I picked up my vehicle. It was still light out so I didn't really check if they worked. Later that night I had the same issue, only the high beams worked. So here is where I give myself a stupidity check: I found a PDF of the owners for my vehicle and studied the controls for the lights and decided that perhaps my high beams were stuck on for some reason, which would be in keeping with all the weird, little things that are wrong with the vehicle. I moved the lever into the high beam position and then back to the normal position and the high beam light that wouldn't go away when I turned my lights on went off. Now everything is behaving normally. So I guess my problem is fixed. However, I don't think that Bob's garage actually fixed the problem. In fact they may have performed a completely unnecessary repair on my car, which isn't great. It's not great because they should have done enough investigating to find out what the real problem is. I also suspect he knew my headlights were fine and left the same ones in which would be fine if he hadn't charged me for them. Given that the real fix involved a little jiggling in my driveway and that's it, a scrupulous mechanic would have told me the real problem (me, being dumb) and if they were a terrible business person charged me for the labor. If there were scrupulous AND a good business person, they would have found and told me the real issue, not charged me but maybe gently let me know that I'm a dumbass. read more

Took my son to meet Bob and get a leaking tire fixed. Bad valve stem was replaced and no other leaks were found...in and out in less than 30 min. And my son is very comfortable taking his car to Bob if something comes up...peace of mind for dad...priceless! read more

I used to think that this was the best place to take my car. This past time I brought my car here I got my brakes done. I had MANY problems with them so I took them back. He said "We did the least we could so it wouldn't be expensive for you." I might be young but I didn't care it was my car if I had to pay a lot I would. Plus I NEVER said I want it done cheap. So I took my car back and they so called fixed it. After THREE days of having my car just to "fix" the brake problem. I was very unhappy. But ok they fixed them. I decided I would take my car somewhere else now that it has to be serviced and the mechanic goes there is one thing Im worried about...Your brakes! UMMM WHAT!?! This is not ok. My wife took our 12 year car at Bob, did not ask for price and Bob did a break service on my car for $800+. Next day a friend of mine borrowed the car and called later to tell me that he almost crashed on the highway as the brakes did not kick in. I drove a bit the car around but did not get the same problem. Then a week later my wife crashed in a parking garage as the brakes did not kick in. I took the car to Bob and he basically was looking for excuses why the brakes would not work. Now, I have to junk the car, as I would not drive it with this issue and I would not let anyone drive it either. Only think Bob was worried about was documenting why it would not be his fault. He drove the car around the block and declared it fit. I do not find this level of service up to the honesty level some other reviews are putting forward. read more

I stopped by Bob's one night after 6pm earlier this month to drop off a flier for a small business I'm promoting. He gladly accepted and hung it up for me. Naturally, I said I'd be by with my vehicle next time I needed service. Not more than two weeks later, I needed an oil change and drove by (right around the time he was closing up) and rather than turn me away because he was closed, he said he'd change the oil for me, check the belts, brakes, etc. as long as I'd be back when he was finished (about 20 minutes later). I thought this was great service. He didn't charge me an arm and a leg, checked everything out for me (no problems) and I was on my way. A few weeks ago I hit an inanimate object in the middle of Highway 101 - no way to avoid it without endangering other drivers. The next day my car began making funny noises. I happened to be in Los Gatos for an appointment and saw Bob's across the street. I took a chance and dropped in and asked what he could do. After taking a quick ride around the block with me so that he could hear the noise, Bob offered to look under the hood and try to figure out the problem. I left the car with him and went off to my 90-minute appointment. He called an hour later and told me that the object I'd hit had apparently broken a hose, and quoted a ridiculously-fair price to replace it. I recently had my Safari Van in due to a leak somewhere in the system, radiator, water pump or maybe something else I wasn't aware of. Bob discovered that it was the water pump and had the car fixed within a couple hours. The price quoted was the price paid, no funny business whatsoever. After picking up my car, I noticed the air condition and heater were no longer blowing out of the vents although I could hear it running. I assumed that they (Bob's Garage) must have done something to cause the system to no longer work properly. I guess you could say my jump to conclusions was based on what we've all experienced in the automotive repair business...need I say more? Well Bob made time for me to bring it back in the next day and discovered the vacuum hose was broken and very brittle. By the way, did I mention the van is almost 14 years old! Also the hose was not located anywhere near where the work on my water pump had been preformed. Nonetheless, Bob fixed the problem and had me on my way in short order...NO CHARGE! Bob certainly could have charged me, but he was more concerned that my air and heating system was working properly. In all honesty, this was clearly a separate issue and had no relation to the other work preformed on the water pump. Bob went above and beyond in treating me fairly. I will be bringing my other car to him soon to have some maintenance completed. I can recommend Bob's Garage without reservation. THE best mechanic in the world! I lived in Los Gatos for 20+ years and Bob was my mechanic for over 15. The guy has a photographic memory; he would quote my phone number and car stats to me. And he is honest as the day is long. No jerking around. He would simply tell me what needed to be fixed, and that was that, signed quote included. Believe me, I've been jerked around by dishonest mechanics--in fact, I called up Bob once when I was uncertain, and he told me, "I don't think you need to have that whole part replaced. Let me see the car." And it was $600 less than I'd been quoted by these other idiots, and he fixed it with just one part. You want a good mechanic--you want Bob. read more
