First off, the spicy landjaeger are a gift handed straight down from Zeus, they are amazing. We've been going to Bob's since we first discovered it 3-4 years ago when we bought our home in the area. Whether it's a large cut for a party, or something for the weeknight, they have it all. They know where their product comes from, they always have recommendations, and everything is top notch quality wise. Their new smoked products are unreal, the jalapeño cheese dogs are awesome, one of my favorite. Also, if you are looking to buy in bulk, the package deals they have are a great deal. I've been hearing about this place since forever, and I was craving a steak this weekend so I stopped down here on my rounds to pick up some steaks. Neat little place.. the guy behind the counter (presumably the owner) was gregarious and friendly. As for the steaks (filet) - not sure where they get their beef from but they had excellent flavor. They were cut flat however (I prefer baseball cut - need to remember to ask for that next time) and they had a bit more fat than I'm used to.. In reality, I'm almost certainly being over-picky.. but I guess I'm so spoiled by Siesel's in San Diego (check my photos for pictures), which is probably the best butcher I've ever been to.. (sigh) [any suggestions for other butchers with prime cuts are greatly appreciated!] All in all, a good solid butcher and I'll definitely come back to try them again.. read more

Great high quality meat, good service even when it is really busy, and a great selection. All the meat I have purchased here has been great tasting, exceeding expectations for a reasonable price. Save yourself some money and time and DONT come here. My roommate bought some dry aged top sirloin steaks from here for Valentines Day. We were so excited to try it but we were severely disappointed. While the experience in the shop was decent, it was somewhat misleading. The sales person that sold us the meat said to cook it medium rare and recommended the cut. After cooking it we tried it, it was the toughest steak we have ever had in our lives and we eat a lot of steak, but it was cooked to a perfect medium rare. It was inedible and we ended up throwing it away it was so bad. Will never come here again. read more

If I had written this review the first time I came here in December for a Christmas prime rib, I'd have given them a solid 4. Hell, on a good day I might have even dropped a 5, even though I almost never do that. The butchers were friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating. The selection of meats was varied, the prices fairly reasonable. That prime rib was delicious. It turned into one of the best standing rib roasts I'd ever made. I was so pleased after my experience that I commanded The Force to walk 2 Angus bulls into the shoppe for them to butcher up and sell. Don't look so impressed, it's not much of a parlour trick. Do you have any idea how easy it is to command a cow? Look one in the eyes sometime. See that blank stare? Yeah, simple stuff. But alas, the work of an evil overlord is never done, and I had other things to do - like make Han "disappear" for seducing my daughter. And then frame his Teen-Wolf wannabe friend. Fast forward to my 2nd visit, today, and I'd give the experience a 2. Where were the butchers? The lady working there clearly wasn't one. Had to venture in to grab a whole brisket for a dinner gathering the Lady Vader requested. Simple enough, right? Nope. The exchange goes something like this: "I'd like a whole brisket. Lady Vader here went and touted up my pitmaster prowess, and now I've got to show off my mad Jedi Smoke skills". Counterperson: "Great. As you can see from our sign, it's 3.75 a pound. Do you want the fat trimmed?". " "I saw the sign already. I need a 1/4" fat cap. Anything over that I'd like trimmed. I'd do it myself, but burnt fat as a result of coming into contact with the iLightsaber smells like the ass of a filthy creature that smelled worse than the filthy creature." Counterperson: "So you want me to trim all the fat?" "No. I want a 1/4" fat cap" Counterperson: "So you don't want me to trim any fat?" "Depends if there's more than a 1/4" fat cap" Counterperson: "So I trim the fat?" "Who's on first" Counterperson: "What?" "Oh, never mind. No, don't trim any fat. Let me see what briskets you have so I can pick one" Counterperson: "Oh, we only have one" Come on....a butcher shoppe with only 1 brisket? I think I find that more offensive than trying to explain how to properly trim fat from the thing. So she brings out "the one". I wanted something in the 7-8 pound variety. I got 13. I wanted something with a 1/4" fat cap. When she showed it to me, it looked like that's what it had. Unfortunately, between her hand covering part of the brisket and the angle by which she showed it to me, I didn't see the giant section of it where the fat had been completely trimmed. Nor the fact that on the thick part of the brisket, it wasn't 1/4". So now I've got a brisket that's almost twice as big as I wanted because it was my only option and I didn't have time to go elsewhere, with a thick section far too wide compared to the point cut, which means the point is going to end up dry by the time the larger section is done cooking. It doesn't have enough of a fat cap, which means I'm going to have to try my damnedest to keep it from drying out via extraneous basting (extra work), and it still probably won't meet my standards when I serve it. And I wasn't real thrilled with the marbling, which means the collagen probably won't melt properly and it's going to be tough unless I work some serious Force Manipulation on it. Which I may or may not be able to do, because it's a brand new smoker and one I'm not used to yet. I feel like Force Choking a chicken...erm, kitten. So, first experience a 4, second experience a 2, I'm going to average it out to a 3, subject to changes based on future encounters, as I'm still keen to give them another chance. I just hope next time there is A) a butcher in the damn butcher shoppe and B) more than one option for what I want to buy. ...and of course hope it at least turns out palatable for the incoming dinner guests. 3 Deathstars. read more

Such a cute little butcher shop a short drive from Seattle with a large inventory of meats (including some more exotic varieties like rabbit or guinea hen) and knowledgeable staff. We found ourselves here today because both Don and Joe's and Rain Shadow did not have what we were looking for. Made a special trip to Columbia City to go to Bob's, and after 15 minutes driving around looking for parking finally arrived. There was only one person staffing the counter and she had her back to me and another customer while she worked the slicer. After a few minutes, another man arrived in an apron and proceeded to ignore us both, just stood there surveying the stock in the case. I waited a bit for him to acknowledge one of us, but when he didn't, I left. So I went to the PCC instead and got awesome service from their meat counter and exactly the cut I was looking for. (mea culpa one other place that deserves mentioning McPhersons Fruit and Veg stand there isnt better in the city) Since moving to Seward Park we go here at least monthly or more often especially in grilling season which pretty much never ends - a true northwestner isnt stopped grilling by a gail force rain hell no we got stuff to grill. Anyway the family that runs the place is really helpful and have a great range of fresh and frozen treats. The shop had a recent overhaul that was needed and now the place is bigger more shelf space for tasty goodness. So to the important stuff - great cuts of meat at fair prices. Lots of options and they give great advice on how to handle it and prep it if you need assistance on that. Well worth the visit. (my only complaint was one time were there bought some steaks and the lady who served us didnt put a paper layer between them - which meant the meat 'greyed' out by the time we got to cooking them. when we went back they replaced no argument, nice) That problem has never happened since. I've been looking around for a place with beef belly. It's not well known, so it's rare to find. I've called one butcher shop after another and no one seems to have it. And then I called Bob's quality meats. A woman answered the phone, I asked her if they had beef belly. She replied with a, yes and ok. And then hung up. I was slightly upset but not enough to overcome my joy of finally being able to find a place that had beef belly. I called bob's quality meats back to ask her again if there was beef belly and how much it was. The same woman answered the phone. Once again replied that they had beef belly and told me the price. I was currently staying in west Seattle so I had to decided to drive through that no west Seattle bridge traffic at 2:30pm on Christmas Eve to go and get me some beef belly. I arrived and barely found parking. I approached Bob's quality meats to find a line in front of the shop. So I wait outside in the cold to get into the shop. When it was finally my turn, I went in and asked for the beef belly. The man that was helping me told me there was no beef belly. I asked him to make sure because I had called twice before coming over. So he went to the farther end of the store, asked someone and she said, "Oh. Not beef belly but brisket." And proceeds to giggle. He then told her that I had said, I called twice. He came back and said, "we don't have beef belly just brisket." I asked if they ever carry beef belly. Another man replied "no. We never have." I said thanks and left. As I was leaving I heard them repeat the words, "beef belly?" like it was an absurd thing. THE ABSURD THING IS THAT YOU TOLD ME YOU HAD BEEF BELLY BUT HAD NEVER EVEN CARRIED THE CUT. Brought up all my joy and then threw it to the ground and stomped on it.
