I've eaten here for breakfast a few times, and while the has is okay, it is too typical for me. I am a bigger fan of an omelet filled with corned beef and Swiss cheese or some of their other breakfast options. I need to go back to check out their corned beef lunch and dinner options. My husband loves corned beef hash so when we passed by this restaurant last time I had to bookmark it. We came for lunch on a Saturday around 1ish. It was pretty empty which worked out for us. I'm sure there is a wait for breakfast. I ordered the corned beef hash omelette and he ordered the corned beef hash with sunny side up eggs. The corned beef hash omelette was ok, I wanted an omelette and corned beef hash so thought it was a good idea to try this but I think next time I would get them separately. It's just not the same in an omelette. The corned beef hash was good esp with the runny eggs. Diner is a bit dated, it would be nice to have some updated booths and maybe clean the walls a bit. Felt a little dirty, but who cares? I'm here for the corned beef right?! Haha Seat yourself, don't pick a booth by the door because that draft can get a bit chilly! Ordered Corned Beef Hash for the second time for breakfast, thinking the first time may have been a bad day. NO! ordered eggs over easy, they were hard the Corned Beef Hash barely filled 25% of the carry out container. Supposed to be the entrée, I would call it a side. The Corned Beef Hash looked processed too. I have had great Corned Beef Hash and this is not even close to being bad. It should go right into the garbage. Do not ever eat breakfast there unless you wish to order 4 or 5 breakfast to get just one normal size order. read more

We stopped in at 8:05 p.m. Although we asked if it was too late to eat, they said it was ok. So we stayed, the food was v-good also the service was v-good but we felt like we were being rushed and being given looks because it was almost closing time. The corned beef sandwiches were pretty good. I wasn't a fan of the bread but the corned beef itself was great. The coleslaw was very good. Sorta sweet, not too tart, and creamy. The front feels a bit like an old, unkept diner but the back had a restaurant feel. Even my son had a good time looking at all the pictures inside and listening to the trains. It's an iconic spot that stands apart from the hustle and bustle bars and upscale restaurants. Certainly more casual and low key with a family friendly appeal. We enjoyed our time there. read more

I grew up going to Bodes and haven't been in 30+ years. I now live in FL but when I saw a post that they now carry Rumi's gluten free bread, I set a reminder to go when I was in town. That happened to be tonight and I went just to have a Gluten free Corned beef sandwich. I am SO thoroughly disgusted with one of the cooks(who turned out to be the owner!) who berated a server in front of the entire restaurant and made them cry twice. Come to find out the server is the owners son! Everyone in the entire restaurant was appalled and asked to speak to him but he refused, he went and hid in the back. I walked up to the kitchen counter and expressed my concern and he blew me off and walked away. PLEASE don't do business with this establishment who treats their employees so badly. I have dined at Bode's twice now. This is a funny little place. We walked in, not sure if we should seat ourselves or just leave because the two staff members we could see (and saw us) just kept talking to eachother. My husband finally flagged someone down and asked if they were open. We were seated promptly and doted on by a lovely lady for the rest of our stay. Lunch was a corned beef sandwich with swiss on their homemade rye bread, grilled. The corned beef was yum but the bread is what blew me away! We bought a loaf on our way out (still warm!). It's flavor isn't very strong in the rye department but it's so yeast strong in flavor and scent. So good! I decided this has to be the bread for my Thanksgiving stuffing. So, this morning we ventured to Bode's to have breakfast (not my favorite meal of the day but my husband will go anywhere for a yummy breaky). My main focus was to buy a loaf of that delicious bread. We get there and it's busy and warm. The owner zips around talking to customers, so many regulars sitting at the counter...really good vibes. We order some breakfast..yummy corned beef hash, nicely cooked eggs and delish toast. Best part?!? The bread had just come from the oven! This stuffing will be epic:) Our server was wonderful and it was nice to hear all the chatter and gossip, you know it's a good place with that many regulars. read more

This is definitely not the old Bode's. The Fish & Chips, one of Bode's Lenten treats, just ok, nothing special. The service was good. But the prices for amount food is not in line with other places in the area (Richards for example). Probably explains the lack of customers on a Friday night during lent. While I really don't mind paying a high price to dine, I do expect it to be a good value. read more

I haven't wanted make this review, but i feel it is necessary. Fish on Fridays goes hand in hand with Bode's and has always been my favorite place to get it. I know they have new owners, and was willing to give them every chance to prove it was the same as before. It isn't. The sizes of the fish are smaller, and something tastes just a bit different. At times I couldn't tell if it was my imagination or something else. So I gave it 3 visits. Nope. Done. Everyone was nice. I really wanted to say that everything is the same and the change of ownerships didn't affect anything, but I can't. So, this review is sort of two-fold and is pretty hard for me to decide on a rating. For one, the corned beef hash and eggs is all I ever get. It's delicious. It's some of the best diner food around. Yes, diner food. You're not going to get gourmet experiences here. But all the food is good, hot, spot-on, and homey. The coffee is hot and good, my eggs are always cooked perfect, and I'm always greeted warmly. Onto why I'm giving this a low score: my husband and I went here really early one morning for breakfast. Our food was spectacular, and our server was great. However, one of the regulars, an older white gentleman, was reading the paper and talking to another server. The place had JUST opened, so it was slow, and I understand talking to the regulars. However, I could hear them and they were saying VERY racist remarks about some people in the news. It was pretty offensive to me and it's not the sort of stuff you should be saying out loud in a restaurant where ANYONE else can hear you. I didn't want to create a stir, so we paid and left. I tried calling them multiple times over the course of the next TWO WEEKS to talk to the owner or manager and tell them about this event. The servers who answered were rude and horribly evasive. Even when I identified myself as a customer and not a salesman, I just got a lot of "he's busy" or a flat out brush off of my comments. I didn't want to tell the story as a message to anyone who answered the phone (to avoid it being "misplaced" or something). I wanted to talk to the owner or a manager. After two weeks of being ignored (I left my number for him to call me back) and chased off by the phone answerers, I gave up. I'm not sure how much I'll go back to Bode's. I DO love their corned beef hash and eggs. But the servers who feel comfortable enough to say very racist remarks for anyone to hear, along with the lack of care in fielding a customer's call, just makes me wary about giving them my money anymore. Besides, I'm not often in Plymouth much and there are closer, just-as delicious diners where I can get breakfast. read more

I probably need to return to try a corned beef sandwich. I have to be honest, I wasn't a huge fan of the corned beef hash. But... I didn't dislike it, and I had a really full meal, including potatoes and toast. I stopped in here on a recent weekend afternoon, between a work event and a family get-together. It was very obviously the waitress's first shift on breakfast. She was very kind, but also very scattered. Still, she's human... no big deal. I still got to eat at the counter reading a book and in plenty of peace. The crowd here is prime for people watching. Depending upon your mood, you may focus on the quirky old lady, or you may hone in on the over-tanned ex-jock. But, there are all sorts of folks hanging out here. The place is pretty straight-forward and non-pretentious. I'm still not a true fan of Bode's, but I would still return to try a sammich version of the corned beef and see if it could measure up even better than the hash. read more

Stopped in at Bodes on a leisurely Saturday late morning. Based on input from people at work, I had high hopes for a grand experience. I ordered a California Reuben (turkey & coleslaw) & a side of corned beef hash. The food came out quickly enough, and I was surprised at the extremely small portions based on the prices. The Reuben was very tasty, the turkey had a nice roasted flavor & was thick sliced on a toasted rye. A very good sandwich actually, too bad it was so small. I'm talking 3rd grade lunch size. The hash was good & tasty, with a little crispiness from the flattop. You could tell it was home made, but not overpowered with green peppers like some get. VERY light on the potato in the hash. Again, way too small a side for the price. I'd go back for the food, but only if I wasn't all that hungry & someone else was paying. We stopped in late evening after searching downtown Plymouth, we were hungry after driving awhile, Dave the new owner welcomed us in despite they had already closed. He heated up the grill and handed us the menu, I tried the corned beef sandwich they were known for and glad I did, it was the best corned beef sandwich I have had anywhere in the country. Well walking in here I was surprised - I fully expected it to be a dark, bar-like atmosphere. All the zillion times I have passed it, I thought it WAS a bar! Instead, it was a diner-type setup, and very well-lit, and larger than I originally suspected. There is a whole back area for seating as well. After getting over that initial surprise, corned beef was on my mind. I didn't think you could go to a place that said "Bode's Corned Beef House" without ordering corned beef anyway! There were a a good handful of choices for corned beef sandwiches served in assorted ways. I chose a classic Reuben and my friend Mo (Maureen M on here) chose the "Club Car" which had corned beef and also turkey. I love a good Reuben and I do not claim to be an expert on Reubens OR corned beef, but this corned beef was DAMN GOOD! Very tender and not fatty at all. I have had corned beef that was a little tough and fatty before but this practically melted in your mouth. In fact, some of it was very crumbly to where it didn't stay on the sandwich too well, but I was just as happy to eat it with a fork. My mouth does not open wide enough to take a bite of something that thick anyway! So I guess what I am saying is that the portion size was pretty good, served with chips and a pickle - $7 or so. Waitress was attentive and friendly. There is a train horn in the restaurant behind the counter that got pulled a couple of times as we wondered what the heck was up with that....I don't think there's any particular reason they pull it though - just when someone on the staff feels the urge I guess. Living in Canton, then Plymouth, and now Canton again, I must say, I fricking HATE trains sometimes and don't care much to hear a train horn for no reason if I don't have to. Granted, this was a slightly quieter, "indoor" version. The train horn would be funner and funnier IF the place served booze and I had done a few shots. But, I am pretty sure Bode's is unfortunately a dry county. LOL. I would return though, they seemed to have a traditional diner menu with coneys and breakfast too. Finally one waitress says I'll be right with you. Then proceeded to take two other orders . And on was for someone who walked in after me . SMH . I got up and left . Not going back there soon . Bode's was always the place to get corn beef but now I am beginning to think "I will make my own". It has been a laughing stock around town over priced and is tough and the portion has shrunk and the taste just isn't there anymore. My gut feeling is the new owners need to take a good look at their menu and fix the cook or find the old cook before this one! read more

Bode's is one of our favorite places to eat if we are real hungry. It's a dive alright, but their AUCE Fish and Chips on Wednesdays and Fridays are great. We used to get carry out fish dinners there about 25 years ago when the wife worked at the Ford dealer on Plymouth Road. Now we sit down to a great Fish dinner inside. The Fish is usually perfect and the tartar sauce on the table in squeeze bottles makes it easy to get your fill. The only real downside is we can't stop until we're too full for the ride home! This is the place for Fried Fish. Oh... and the corned beef is really good too. Five star dining for Fish and/or Corned Beef. read more

Somehow I feel more than a bit guilty for writing this critique of a Plymouth staple such as the legendary Bode's, mainly because of my lack of exposure to their primary offering. When a place has a history that dates all the way back to 1860's you know they have to have done something right, especially considering the debilitated state of Michigan's economy during the Depression Era as well as today. From my brief visit what I've gleamed is that "something they do right" is decent food at affordable prices. Which is always a recipe for success by any era's standards. The decorum could be described as quaint , and if it wasn't for the steady stream of business by both locals and passersbys. This might be an ideal place to perch at the counter and finish that novel you've been trying to hash out for the past six years. "By the way how's that going anyways? Ay interesting dialogue? Witty repartee between betwixted characters? Hmmm? Unrequited love triangles? Mustache twirling fiends in dark, perfectly tailorer suits, with matching bowlers? Yeah...uhmmm I didnt think so" The menu unfortunately wasn't as interesting as the history and charm of the establishment. Bordering somewhere between a decent Coney Island (if you're SE Michigander you know exactly what I'm talking about) and a Rams Horn (same here) it left a lot to be desired. With only about 6 specialty sandwiches all a variation on the traditional corned beef standard. You know the drill corned beef sand, reuben, reuben with turkey, etc. But on multiple glances all appear to be crafted with love which is waaay more costly than the 6 buck average price for them. I ordered the traditional club sandwich which ranked about average in my book of box car type sandwiches, but in retrospect my book is very long and has multiple volumes. Short on bacon, long on smoked turkey, zero ham or cheese. So to someone more mature and less traveled this may seem a bit harsh, but everyones palate is different. An institution's longevity is only as good as it's reputation, and with both as stellar as this place are. It's a safe bet Bode's will still be here serving up good classic american food at reasonable prices through the end of the next U.S. economic crisis. read more

My favorite local restaurant in all of Plymouth. I have horrible anxiety in public places and the second I stepped foot in this building I felt like I was at home, every employee here is so kind and quick with service. You never have to feel bad if you don't like something or would like something a specific way. The food is phenomenal. When my grandma passed nearly 10 years ago her recipe for chicken and dumplings went with her. When I tried the chicken and dumplings at Bodes it was exactly like having hers again. I will never buy from anywhere else but here. 10/10 you have to come in this place if you want a genuine home cooked meal. read more

I chose Bode's after searching for fish and chips on Yelp. The photos looked good and the reviews were also. We ordered the all you can eat fish and chips, but our waitress came back to the table to let us know it's only available on Wednesdays and Fridays. The menu makes it look like it's available everyday. Even our waitress didn't know. Instead we ordered the three piece which comes with French fries and coleslaw. The fish had a light batter and was cooked perfectly, but it needed more seasoning. It was almost flavorless. The fries were cooked a little too long and were on the hard side, but the coleslaw was good. Bode's is a small hole in the wall restaurant with friendly staff. We will return to try the corned beef one day. read more

I've always wanted to try this place, and stopped one morning on impulse after getting my semi-annual dental visit over with. The place is small and dive-ish, with assorted coffee cups hanging from the wall. My kind of place! The coffee was fresh and hot. I ordered (what else?) the corned beef hash with over-easy eggs and rye toast. Now, I'm not a fan of finely-ground hash. The texture reminds me of cat food, and who the hell wants to eat cat food for breakfast? Rather, I'm a fan of chunky hash. This was, in fact, finely ground hash, but obviously homemade and far tastier than that crap in a can. The service was good and the atmosphere was relaxed and homey, with newspapers available for the reading. My bill was about $6. I'll definately be back. On top of needing to explore more of the corned beef options, I'd like to check out the fish and chips, which the waitress tells me is quite good. read more

I have driven past Bode's many times over the past 2 1/2 years since I started working in Plymouth. It's always peaked my curiosity. It's a very old, historic building, and I love corned beef. Rachel C. and I both wanted to check this place out, so we met for lunch. We were very surprised at what we discovered when we walked in. For some reason, we both imagined it would be as old and dark on the inside as its outside appearance, basically a dive. Nope. It was well-lit, very clean and basically a diner. Our confusion ended quickly as soon as one of the waitresses pulled the train horn, and we were like a couple of children laughing at how funny it sounded. Of course we came to Bode's to try their corned beef. Rachel ordered the Reuben & I ordered the Club Car (I think that's what it's called). My sandwich had turkey, corned beef, and swiss with grilled rye bread, which was an option. We were both really pleased with our sandwiches. The corned beef was lean, moist and had pretty good flavor. It's nice to bite into a sandwich and just get what you bit off instead of the rest of the slice of meat. I'd say that this was one of the top corned beef sandwiches I've had. Service was very good. Our waitress was pleasant and attentive.
