So many choices, so little money. Friendly staff and a huge selection of everything meat. I even saw frozen goat heads! I stocked up on sausage and boudin. My brother swears by this place. I felt like a kid at DisneyWorld. Lots of great cuts, choices and very friendly staff. I had to go with the bacon pinwheels. For my son and I we went with the ones with jalapeños. For my lovely ladies we tones it down a little. Fires them up on the grill and they were amazing. Great seasons and tastes. When downtown SA I will definitely stop in again. My only two wishes would be location and price. It is a little pricey but I would say the flavor and service make up for that deficit. This place is phenomenal, I wish I could give more stars. Randomly my husband and I decided to go to a butcher. Of course looked on Yelp and this was the closet one to us. When we walked in we were immediately greeted. Since we have never been there we were looking around like tourist. Lol. We were then greeted by a young lady who took her time explaining the different cuts of beef, how the store was set up, where to find certain items and that they will season the meat at no extra charge. She even explained the types of seasonings. We went to the next counter and the guy there told us about the different types of sausage and allowed us to sample the jerky. Texas has a mother lode of great BBQ establishments, but San Antonio... not so much. However, there are a handful of places worth visiting, and Bolner's Grocery & Meat Market is the best of these. If you've never been, pay attention when you drive by because it looks like an old factory rather than a restaurant, so you might drive right past it. Once you're inside, you'll discover a mini-General Store type atmosphere with a cold food case, a wall of spices, and an extremely appealing assortment of butcher shop beef. There is no menu board, the printed menus are stacked up either by the register or at the serving line. Just walk right up to the steaming trays of smoked meat and sides behind the glass, place your order, and pick a seat. Drink cups are located next to the soda fountain and tea dispensers. The "marbled" brisket (their name, as opposed to "lean" brisket) is easily the best in San Antonio, but no match for your pick of the great BBQ places in Central Texas. The brisket is very tender, but no BBQ crust, it's a tiny little bit on the rubbery side, and it doesn't have the distinctive smoke flavor found at a world-class BBQ. But, it tastes good - does that make sense? The sausage is made in-house in their butcher shop and as far as I know, Bolner's is the only restaurant that serves it. The sausage is very tasty, the casing is just the right thickness (I like mine a tiny bit thicker than some people) and I prefer their jalapeno sausage as opposed to the plain or garlic sausage. I'm not a big fan of garlic flavoring, but I've shared lunch with several people who ordered the garlic sausage and most all of them told me it was the best sausage they ever had. The sides are mostly pretty good. I usually order pinto beans and they are the run-of-the-mill variety with small hunks of brisket found in most average Texas barbecues. Mac & Cheese (I think it's homemade) is very cheesy and sticks together in a classic way that reminds me of my childhood. I really enjoy their creamed corn, but as of October 2013, they only make it on Thursdays and when it's gone, it's gone, so you have to be lucky to get any of it. They make other special sides on certain days of the week too, although I don't know their schedule. If you're visiting Texas to find great BBQ, this place probably wouldn't be on my top 10 list, but if you're in San Antonio and spending any time near downtown (the restaurant is about 2 miles South of Downtown on Flores, immediately South of the 410 overpass), it's definitely worth a visit. read more

I have purchased meat from Bolner's multiple times, and it is always great quality. The store is stocked with a wide variety of meats and spices, and they have plenty of people working at each of the meat counters. The employees are helpful, and are willing to answer your questions. I have become a grill master as of late (self-proclaimed), but I still don't feel confident enough to buy their aged steaks that can run 40 plus dollars a pound. I'm sure they are delicious, but I'm not willing to risk that kind of cash. With that being said, even the more affordable steaks I recently purchased were awesome. They offer to season them for you, which is a nice touch. They also have some really delicious fresh sausages that hold up well to grilling. I bought the jalapeño garlic recently, and everyone in my family raved about how much they liked it. It was full of flavor, and the casing had a great snap. Bolner's has a large selection of house made jerky choices as well. They are on the tougher side for me, but if you like tougher, chewier jerkies, then these would be right up your alley. You can find larger boxes of frozen meat, that I'm sure are cheaper by the pound, but we just prefer to buy the fresh stuff from the meat counters. When you first walk in to your right, there is a freezer full of Cajun products such as frog legs and etoufee. I can't recall the brand, but I know I saw the same items while I was in Louisiana, so I'm sure it's good stuff! read more

Bolner's was a usual stop a few years back for me, but now that I really have someone I love cooking and experimenting with it's back on the must visit weekend markets list. Oxtail, lengua, sweet breads will be new adventures in our kitchen. Iberico rib roasts, Akaushi brisket and steaks - great options, including aged beef (rib eyes sell quickly we were told.) One of my favorite meat markets. Anytime I wanted a specific cut they would happily oblige. From Kalbi Ribs to Fred Flintstone Short Ribs. They are owned by the same family that owns Fiesta Spices and have a wall o spices to choose from. If you're on the fence about what to use they will offer to season your purchase with whatever spice you like for you to sample. Unsure about what cut to use or how to cook the Who-Beast? A real butcher will give you some pointers. They have a small area where they cook up some BBQ (burgers are a top choice) and it's an OK place to stop for lunch but come here for the quality meat. I finally made it out here at least a couple of times the past month or so and I'm glad I did. From the outside, it is definitely unassuming. The good thing was that on my first visit, there was a buttload of customers bustling around in the parking lot - a bunch of folks were buying meats up for the Labor Day weekend - so it was fairly easy to spot where Bolner's was located. I also didn't realize that I used to pass by this place all the time back in the day. The meats are definitely high end - very delicious and more than worth the money. I've bought beef ribs, pork ribs, and bacon from here and haven't been disappointed at all yet. The food they cook here smells delicious every time I walk in; however, I have yet to try it. It's clean, well-kept, and the employees are pleasant. P.S. Watch for Carl C. and Stephen C. since they were stalking me on my last trip. Ha ha ;P P.S.S. I've been able to buy quality frozen hamburger patties and when I'm feeling adventurous I'll gander at their more exotic items, like frog legs :) I've been able to buy top grade Texas Wagyu steaks and delicious Tomahawks. Their fajitas are phenomenal and so is their shrimp diablos! Be careful, the name isn't a joke. The diablos are bacon wrapped shrimp and boy are they spicy and BOY and they good! The lunch crowd from work just checked out Bolner's Grocery & Meat Market for the first time. As the name suggests, Bolner's is a food store first and foremost. They feature the largest selection of Bolner's Fiesta seasonings that I've seen anywhere. If you want to cook like a Texan, they've got what you need. And that extends to the awe-inspiring butcher case. Bolner's also features a lunch counter. That's the way to think of this place. This isn't really a "barbecue joint" as much as a meat market with a lunch counter--and a good one at that. I had a two-meat plate of mild and spicy sausage, to which I added a couple of pork spare ribs. I traded part of one of my ribs for a small piece of fatty ("marbled") brisket. Everything was good, especially the mild sausage. And I'm not usually a big fan of sauce, but Bolner's is flavorful without being overpowering. My sides were macaroni & cheese and broccoli & cheese (I like cheese), and these were both excellent. The vibe of the place is one of down-home old-timey comfort. I felt very relaxed in this place. They've been in business for nearly a century, and standing in the store fills you with a sense that all is right with the world. You know a place is good when all of its regulars are Elite Yelpers! I have been passing this place weekly and it always seemed closed during the times I passed. Turns out its open during regular hours! The shop is really old fashioned. Its really set up like an old timey market. There are French sodas, fresh vegetables, spices and seasonings galore, a decent cold beer selection, cooked BBQ to dine in and of coarse a massive selection of red meats to take home and cook yourself. I was very impressed with their assortment of meats. They have jalapeno sausage, mild and regular sausage. They have some chorizo, some bacon wrapped shrimps, some pinwheel steaks and goodness lots and lots more! Sure things were a little pricey but you get what you pay for. The dine in BBQ wasn't as good as it smelled. We had a few pork ribs that were a little too cooked and chewy. The banana pudding was a good portion, but not enough banana in the pudding. The staff was over the top helpful. In fact I loved the people behind the counters. They were the best! I pretty much decided Bolner's will be my go to place for anything needing a special meaty treat! read more

Bolner's is one of those great local BBQ (meat markets) joints that most people would love having in their back yard. However, it's not so good that I would recommend traveling great distances to get there . First, the meats are cooked in back (I assume) and moved out front and into a display case. Unfortunately this means that the meats are not as hot as I would like them to be. I like my Q to come right out of the smoker and on to the carving block. The taste of the meats is decent enough, with a nice smoke to them and an adequate rub. The rib meat pulled cleanly from the bone but lacked that succulence like I recently experienced at The Smoke Shack (best ribs in SA hands down). The fatty (marbled as they say) brisket was pretty good. It retained the juiciness from the fat and was cut about 14 thick. The sausage, of which they offered 3 varieties (regular, spicy, cheese) was a bit of a downer because it had been out of the smoker so long that the outside was cool and the casing hard - more like the casing you would expect on a pepperoni stick. The sides, however, were great. I ate the mac n' cheese and mushrooms and was very satisfied. The mac was thick, stick to your ribs, gooey goodness. The mushrooms are simmered in a sauce and plated hot onto your plate. Simply great. And one last thing, they have IBC Root beer in their fountain drinks. A big downer, the price. Not sure what Bolner's thinks they're selling but the prices are a bit outrageous. My small 3 meat plate (no ribs) with 2 sides and a drink was $14 + tax. I mean, it was good but not THAT good. To add insult to injury, they overcharged my dining companion by $10! He didn't really notice it until it was time to leave and he didn't want to make a federal case out of it. They had some very decent looking meat in their meat market to include some very pricey filet mignon for $89/lb. Tons of spices to be purchased and also some pepperoni sticks and jerky. If you're in the neighborhood, check them out. However, I cannot recommend travelling across town to pay excessively for BBQ only marginally better than Bill Miller's. read more

If you want fresh meat, Bolner's is the place to get it. I know you can buy meat just about anywhere, but I'm talking about fresh meat. Bolner's has expert butchers that will cut the meat any way you want it. You're not sure how to season the meat, they'll do it for you. You're not sure how how to cook it, just ask them, they'll be glad to help. When you walk toward the meat counter on the right side they have crawfish stuffed chicken, hamburger patties, cheeses, etc. straight ahead is the meat counter. Fajitas, pinwheels, steaks, sausage, bacon. Every time I'm in here I think, if the world ends today I want to be here. The butchers will vacuum pack your order however you want. When you leave there you will come across all their Bolner's spices and then to the poultry counter. Chicken, quail, it's all there. Next to that is the dried meats, deer, beef jerky it's all good. My wife and I don't buy meat at the grocery store anymore, we buy our meat at Bolner's. Give them a try, you'll be glad you did. read more

When I was growing up, we'd stop at the dairy mart to pick up milk in glass jugs and farm fresh eggs. We'd stop at the grocery store for pantry staples. We'd go to the farmers market (which is now a pathetic tourist trap known as Market Square) for our fruits and veggies. And, we'd stop at the butcher for our meat. Today folks just go to the HEB or WalMart. And I do too. But, when I want USDA Prime dry aged beef, I go to Bolner's. The butcher always has a variety of dry aged goodness. I've had a 45 day aged bone-in rib eye that was incredible. At $20 bucks a pound, it was a steal. Although I've never tried them, they make a beef pinwheel that sells like hot cakes. This is a full service butcher; if you don't see what you want, they'll cut it for you on the spot. Of course, house ground beef in extra lean and lean. I'd never buy ground beef from anywhere else. Bolner's makes a great chorizo as well. This is all lean pork and magic dust. Outside of making your own, this is as good as it gets in San Antonio. Strike that. It is the best commercially available chorizo available in San Antonio. There. I said it. I am not afraid of making a bold statement. Here is the bottom line: When you absolutely must have the best, you go to a place that is staffed with professionals that take great pride in delivering outstanding quality. The C Family likes meat, usually meat of all kinds, but red meat is a particular favorite for us serious carnivores. Bolner's is the only place we go to buy steaks and other meats for grilling out. I can't speak on dining in, since we are usually eager to get home and start cooking, but some of our favorites from their meat selections are the Mexican sausages (best when eaten with a homemade tortilla wrapped around it), pinwheel steaks (tenderloin rolled up with bacon and some seasoning on the inside), and the rib eyes. A combo of those three meats makes for one helluva pachanga huey! One time, I was sent shopping all alone without the more knowledgeable meat eaters in the fam, and the guys behind the meat counter were super helpful! I was intimidated at first, afraid to make the wrong decision, but all you gotta do is ask and these guys will lead you to the perfect cut, give you tips on how to prepare it, and even season it for you with one of their many seasoning selections. But not to worry the meat counter is filled with some of the most helpful butchers. This is the place to go when you grilling you own steak. You get your money's worth and won't be disappointed. The pin wheel steak and sausages are also must gets. Not only is it a meat market but they know bbq well. We always make a trip out of going to Bolner's. And well lunch is a must. They have all your bbq favorites; ribs, brisket, sausage and some amazing sides. The mac and cheese and cream corn are mouthwatering. Ok so you've eaten lunch picked out some meat for dinner. Oh you need seasoning. Bolner's has every Fiesta season there is. I'm pretty sure they whip up the stuff in house. Regardless I usually stock up when I'm here. Because well HEB never has the one I'm out of. You can get a number of other goodies here. They sell fresh longhorn cheese way cheaper than any deli I can think of. They have packaged homemade tortillas ready to go. And have a great selection of olive oil and pasta. Dismayed with the crowds of tourists near our hotel, we ventured out to Bolner's for dinner, after reading the Yelp reviews. The place looks like a dive from the exterior and is located in a somewhat questionable neighborhood. I had to coax my husband from the car, as he was certain we should not stop here. However, once inside, the scrumptious scent of barbecue quickly changed his mind! We had pork ribs and brisket, which were juicy, tender and perfectly smoked. Just as delicious were the sides, all homemade like Mom's: macaroni and cheese, broccoli with cheese sauce, pinto beans, carrot salad. Soooo good. What Bolner's lacks in decor - the tables are in a meat market, after all - and atmosphere, it more than makes up for in excellent food. Come to find out this place has been around for almost one hundred years And on the South-side of San Antonio. They also are known for their spices. All these years and I never knew that they made Fiesta Bolners spices. You can usually find them at HEB or Fiesta. HEB is San Antonio based so that's why I've always seen the spices there. This place is awesome. It's a small quite little meat market and eatery. They even have a little fridge shelves that holds some of the best longhorn cheese. Sliced, full moon or crescent moon. At the butcher counter you can get bacon , several different types of sausage, t- bone steaks, cubes steak, sirloin meat and a specialty meat they have that Is similar to Kobe beef. The eatery is basic barbecue. Brisket, sausage, beef and pork ribs, and chicken. Barbecue sauce can come on the side. The sauce is the cats meow. That sauce is SO good !!!! Most places have very watery sauce. Not Bolners. Nice thickness. They Also grill hamburgers that are Awesome!!! They are made when ordered, so no hamburger floating in mystery seasoned water. Then the hot Burger is then topped with green leafy lettuce, onion, tomato, thick pickle slices and then you get a crispy sliced pickle on the side. All that goodnes is them placed on a grilled bun that is fantastic. This is not your Mrs Baird's bread. They have really good sides , too. Creamed corn, roasted red potatoes, sweet potatoes with marshmallow, green beans, and little mushrooms in butter sauce. My suggestion get here early for lunch. There are groups of carnivorous men here getting their meat. If it's your first time get the family meal. Trust me. It's all you need to get hooked and it's a great sampler. Maybe I'm biased because my family has such history with this place. My grandmother was born in the apartment above the market, my grandparents and mom did most of their shopping here, and my grandpa brought us here many times a week to get candy, ice-cream and stuff to make lunch during the long summers at his place. They also carry all Akaushi cuts of course. Bohanans does rock but you can do it yourself from here. Service is excellent and informative and anything can be custom cut and ordered in advance for pick up. From Cabrito to Steaks. Small amount of produce and gourmet type cooking items are on hand. This place makes me desperately wish my hotel had a grill. I somewhat expected that Texas would have amazing meats and great prices for them, but I didn't know if I'd ever see it with my own eyes. Then a colleague on our project brought us to Bolner's for lunch, and I saw their butcher's counter. I'd have sold my right arm for a chance to grill up some of the T-Bones and Porterhouses I saw in front of me!! Once I stole my eyes away from that counter, the restaurant was top class too. I love me a good brisket and this place delivered so well that it completely changed my worldview on what "good brisket" means in the first place!
