First off, I gave this place 2 chances and both times went poorly. I'm in Gallup, NM for work and was thrilled to see they actually had an Indian restaurant in town. The food was bland, the meats and vegetables in the dishes are not fresh, but come from bulk frozen or canned packs. My second time there, was for the lunch buffet. It took 10 minutes to get a glass of water and some naan. There were beef meatballs on the buffet... so that's weird for an Indian place. The waitress made me uncomfortable by whispering in my ear before any other interaction, that she wants me to pay in cash because the manager keeps her tips when people pay with a card. When I told her "sorry, I don't carry cash." My service predictably vanished. Both experiences were weird and the food nowhere near justifies the price, even when the buffet is only $10.00. What an insane find this place is. Doesn't look like much from the outside but I honestly don't think I have ever had such authentic Indian food. We stopped in for lunch while driving on the 40 on Super Bowl Sunday and Bombay Grill was one of the only places open- and I am so glad they were. We chose the lunch buffet and got to try a variety of different dishes (with many vegetarian options of course!). It was such a nice break from our day long journey. Service was great, usually buffets have limited service but the guys here were attentive and very nice. I honestly sort of want to make the drive back up to Gallup just for the food lol. read more

Went on Yelp recommendation. I'll talk about food at end (mostly tasty) but first I'll write of our experience. Unfortunately, we got there just minutes before the buffet was scheduled to close (4 pm on Sun). Waitress was sweet and accommodating but I definitely got the idea, from who I am guessing to be, the owner and the mgr, that they wanted to close it down. Hard to decide quickly on what you want when you don't know what's on the buffet, yet alone the menu, and the rest of your family has run off to find the rest room! So the waitress explained the buffet items and also happily showed me the menu when I asked. I had to ask price of buffet ($10 including naan). Quick survey of entrees in menu looked to be in $15 price range so we just went for the buffet. After we committed, mgr asked we how many orders of naan we wanted..."One?," he suggested. I told him all three of us were having buffet, so maybe two. Turns out the orders were big so one order of naan would have done it. Garlic naan would also have been nice but he didn't offer and I forget to ask. If he was looking to save money, though, why not start us with one and offer us more during the meal if we were running low? Also, as we served our plates and sat down, the mgr let me know that if we wanted more we should serve our 2nd plates right away. I tried to quickly sample so I could tell what I'd like seconds of. It is hard to factor in how full you'll be at end of meal and I could have really skipped seconds altogether! With the extra naan, we were uncomfortable with how much food we left behind. Didn't take it because we were just traveling thru and we wouldn't be home for hours. Last thing about the experience... we didn't get a paper bill. When it was time to pay, we were told to just tell the cashier what we ordered. It did turn out to be $30, as we expected. The food: naan, butter chicken (my favorite, white meat), chicken curry (a little runny and dark meat pieces), meat balls, veggies, spinach, rice, yogurt, chickpeas -(ran out), fresh lettuce, onions, yogurt, and sweet rice. Chicken curry was the only thing that I didn"t care for. We didn't get any condiments like chutney. I should have asked, but i was really thinking the whole restaurant was closing so we tried to wrap it up. Turns out the restaurant was not closing, as they seated several people who trickled in. The restaurant is attached to a gas station. Last place you'd expect to find any restaurat, yet alone an a Indian restaurant. The Bolly-wood movie quietly playing in background did add a little ambiance to the restaurant with such sparse decor. So, our whole meal was way too affected by the "closing of the buffet." Bottom line: the food was yummy but hospitality very lacking. There were only 7 customers there most of the time we were eating. With a little effort, we could have felt much more welcomed. Kudos to the waitress who truly tried to make us feel comfortable. However, I don't see any repeat visits in our future. read more

This was my second visit and it again was just as fantastic as during my first visit! The food was super delicious and plentiful. I ordered a vegetarian dish, rice, reita and garlic naan. (I used to live in NYC, now in LA and have had plenty of comparisons). Service was again very friendly and prompt. As the first time, I was a single female traveling by myself and having a late dinner here. There were no awkward remarks or anything that would make me feel strange, although all other guests were male. The many TV's play an assortment of Eastern Indian music videos, which is fun to watch & listen to. I like that a lot of Eastern Indian people come here for the food. It was a really cold night tonight and one of the servers placed a glass of ice water in front of me, which I hadn't touched yet, when 2 minutes later the manager placed a cup of hot steaming tea in front of me, saying "it's pretty cold out there today." I tasted the tea and it was so yummy!! Really nice Indian Chai with Honey and Milk!! They even gave me another large cup of hot chai tea when I left, so I could sip it during my drive. After driving all day, I was so excited to try this place (I searched yelp and saw the great reviews). They did not disappoint! The food was hot and delicious, the service was exceptional, and the price was fair for being the only real food in the area combined with the convenience of being able to grab the food while my husband filled up the tank. I ordered Garlic & Herb Shrimp, Eggplant & Potato, and two orders of Garlic Naan. Do yourself a favor and dip the Naan in the creamy sauce, YUM! They gave all 4 of us in the family free Chai Tea and Mango drinks while we were waiting for our food (which only was about 15 min). Oh and I also want to mention I'm not a fan of spicy food and I ordered my meal "mild". It wasn't spicy at all and tasted delicious. read more

Additionally, there was a pre-teen boy wondering around that area and the kitchen with NO MASK. Masks are MANDATORY IN NM. Then I began to notice how dirty everything looked in general. Don't let the hole in the wall location fool you. These guys are serious about making authentic Indian food. It is among the best I have ever had. The fact that the employees have varying commands of the English language and baliwood is playing on tv just adds to the experience. I would come here every week if I lived nearby. As a truck driver, this is a must stop for me. Food is always excellent and that is so hard to come by especially with truck parking. My only complaint is that the restaurant should open earlier! Surprising location for solid Indian chow. At least until you take a moment to consider the ubiquity of Sikh truckers. Located in an aging truck stop on the fringes of Gallup, the place doesn't ooze American-chain-joint ambience. While this can be off-putting to many, in this case I highly recommend you press on and chow down. I have experienced expat Indian food widely in the UK and in the US and this place stands up to the best takeaway joint, although it falls short of some high end places, like my favorite place in the East Bay. We ordered a paneer veggie dish that was supposed to be hot, but I suspect they pulled some punches on account of our pasty Anglo complexions. The fellow who waited on us gave us some sweet, creamy chai while waited. Oh, and don't expect to score a Kingfisher with the meal or any alcohol at the convenience store. I'm updating my rating, I had a bad experience years ago, but since this is a small town without much variety I have been eating here frequently even after the one bad experience. I have realized that when I am traveling, this is the Indian restaurant I judge the others by, and most of the time I find myself thinking, "this is good, but Bombay is a little better." They have great vegetarian dishes, and tandori murg (chicken) is great. This place is the BOMB(ay). Don't run, but Gallup here. As a frequent patron of gas stations, I will assert that I have never been so pleasantly surprised by the restaurant within. Usually we rely on gas stations for car fuel, but this time we received a different kind of fuel in the form of delicious Indian food which fuels the mind, body and soul and spirit and tummy. This place is delicious and that's all you need to know!! But also- the staff is also very sweet, nice and also friendly. As for the food: The saag paneer is slammin as is the naan. It even comes in a cute lil basket. We loved watching the BollyWood vids on the TV, my boyfriend even did a cute dance while watching. Might have to call Guy Fieri and send him over to Bombay. For those of you who don't know: Guy is the host of the Food Network's popular television series Diners, Drive Ins and Dives, known as Triple D to true fans. Triple D is a food show hosted by Guy Fieri that travels around the country (America) in search of lil hole in da wall hot spots. The reason why I bring him up is because I feel that Bombay Grill is deserving of a visit from Guy Fieri (host of Triple D). This place is not only the dankest but also maybe the only restaurant in Gallup. We initially took this exit in search of Cafe Bistro. Much to our chagrin, CB was nowhere to be found. We circled the mile long strip of gas stations and businesses twice while looking for CB to no avail. We were disappointed, saddened and confused and upset, however it was not long before Bombay Grill saved the day. Luckily, we saw the sign and pulled right in and luckily it was open. Luckily when we got inside we were greeted by a friendly man with a beautiful smile and open arms. Luckily there was no wait and the atmosphere was festive. We had a very satisfying lunch--buffet style. Curried chicken, 'butter' chicken, Beef meatballs, Garbanzo Beans, rice, and last but certainly not least, a deliciously spiced spinach dish. Each dish was authentically and individually spiced. The owner stated that the dishes came from the Punjabi Region of India. I must say that this food was very savory and satisfying. I felt filled much sooner that I expected, and I chose my servings sparingly. My husband also received fresh naan-two kinds. One was plain, the other with parsley and thinly sliced scallions, with butter. Both were served piping hot, aromatic, and delicious The restaurant is right off the highway. It was mid-afternoon when we were there. Three young men, all with East Indian accents, ate when we did. There was a wide screen TV playing a Bollywood feature (no subtitles). The environment was more than adequate, but surprisingly, had no Indian decor. Our servers were friendly, but their understanding of English was poor, and this discouraged conversation. read more

The restaurant uses lots of spices so there is a noticeable odor when u walk into the building, that being said the food was very good. The buffet is kinda spartan not much choice however its quite tasty. I mostly had the chicken curry i dare say its almost perfect very tender and just the right amount of heat. My wife and I chanced upon this place when stopping for gas. We thought we'd give it a shot as we didn't fancy any chain restaurants or any more Mexican food. We were more than pleasantly surprised. The decor is 70s truck-stop, which is cool if you like places a little odd and different, though probably not the best choice if you enjoy some modern, chic ambience. It seems like the go-to place for Indian truck drivers passing through. The food was probably some of the best Indian I have tasted in this country, and on par with many of the Indian restaurants I have been to in the UK. The menu had some interesting choices, different from the typical faire of most Indian restaurants. Portions were large with enough to take home. I spent the whole of the next day looking forward to having the leftovers for dinner. I would most definitely go back there next time I am passing through. read more

Saw the sign on our way from Flagstaff, AZ to Gallop, NM and noted it. When we went to find the restaurant once we got to Gallop, we discovered it was in a truck stop! Truck stop Indian food... Hmm... Well we decided to give it a try since the seed was planted. First impressions - well, it is a truck stop after all. Bathrooms are shared with Truckers, parking was... interesting since it appears the Cooks, Waiters, and truck stop employees all park in the prime parking spots in front of the restaurant portion - and the back of the truck stop is pretty sketchy and dirty. Walking in first impression - horrible decor - standard 1960 truck stop booths, floor treatments, wall decor, nothing really warm and inviting, but - and this is big - it smelled great. Menu - the menu has quite a few offerings, even omelets - which aren't really standard for Indian restaurants but looked great on the TV. We ordered our standard dishes, Navrattan Korma and Chicken Makani along with plain Naan (we figured that if that was good, we would return for breakfast to try the omelet). The Navrattan Korma was the best we have ever eaten and the Chicken Makani was also excellent! Naan was perfect as well. Lesson learned: never judge a book by it's cover, and when you think about it, it makes sense to have an Indian food restaurant in a truck stop in this part of the Country because there are quite a few Indian truck drivers on the road these days. Bottom line: If you want great Indian food, this is the spot in Western New Mexico (and Northern Arizona as well). Pricing is very affordable, service is very good, and the food is awesome. Note to owner: If it were me, I would consider putting is separate bathrooms for the restaurant, having staff park in back, and doing something with the decor, just to "dress the place up a bit". read more
