Well loved and frequented by locals, BR has always been known for its delicious, authentic, affordable lunch buffet and exceptional service. I have been a repeat customer for many years. On October 21 at about 1:00 I had lunch inside at BR for the first time since it reopened. The house Thali was wonderful, and reminiscent of the multiple options traditionally offered at the lunch buffet now on hold. Thali is offered to those who dine in. To-go lunch specials were being picked up by a steady stream of customers while I was there. The warm naan dipped in masala was heavenly and the Tandoori chicken breast was piping hot and beautifully seasoned. My server brought a side of my favorite tamarind sauce. All of the buffet favorites are included in the Thali. As usual the staff was so attentive and kind. As a Smith College alumna, I have loved Bombay Royale from my days as an undergraduate and enjoy bringing my friends and family here. This was some of the best Indian food I've had in a loooooong time. Amazing prices, incredible food, very friendly people. We had the chicken tikka naan, tamarind eggplant, lamb chettinad, meen molee(salmon curry, sort of), and rasmalai. I live in an Indian food desert, and this oasis is worth the trip. I've been meaning to join yelp for a while, but our experience at this restaurant finally prompted me to sign up! We had lunch here a few weeks ago on a day trip to Northampton. I was shopping for yarn (danger!), which left my guy and our dog plenty of time to stroll and explore the town. "How about Indian buffet for lunch?" He was good enough to schlep me out to Northampton to shop for yarn, plus I love Indian, so yeah, I'm in! It was pretty late, lunch-time-wise, but the place was hopping! The host took our name and gave us an estimate for how long it would take. Then he asked us if we wanted to sit at the bar, which of course we agreed to, because everything smelled so good! And so it was. We've been to lots of Indian lunch buffets all around, and this one was rock-solid. Plenty of choices, both vegetarian and not, and everything was fresh, flavorful, and clean-tasting. I could have taken the entire dish of saag back to the bar with me. Delicious! And the decor is chic and contemporary, which is a nice touch. But here's the real reason for my rave review: the people there. See, I left my little cash purse behind - it had no credit cards or ID, just cash. I didn't realize it until the next day, so I called. Well, Vince, who was our host, answered and said of course he remembered us and yes, he had my little cash purse - we could come pick it up anytime. Well, except we live 2 hours away... So he graciously offered to mail it to me, and he was as good as his word. Great ambiance, good food, attentive service, wonderful people - even though Northampton has much to offer in the way of great lunch places, we will be regulars at this place on our infrequent trips. Finally a good indian place in Noho that is very reasonably priced, not stingy with the portions, and very very tasty. This place is going to drive the other 2 places in NOHO to change or shut down in the near future. I just hope they keep their current standard up that they have set. We went as a family for the Sunday buffet. Awesome! The variety of foods was superb. We started with salada and Chaat items such as Pani Puri and channa minibatura. The salad was arranged beautifully and very inviting. Then traditional south indian breakfast items, Idli and vada. Idli was soft and vada was crisp. We then moved to the main course with veg. Briyani, naan, masala dosa and curry items such saag panner. We ended with carrot halwa, gulub jamun and kheer. The taste of all these items were great. We are vegetarians and there many vegetarian items on the buffet. In addition to the food taste, what struck me was the creativity. It's difficult to find food from Kerala state in western Mass. Most Indian restaurants specialize in northern India cuisine, good but none of the subtleties of the south. Coconut milk, exquisite use of spices, vegetarian delights, and, my favorite, masala dosa all are showcased at Bombay Royale. Waiters were prepared to explain each dish to the novice. They were ready to offer suggestions based on our various needs. We all left satisfied and pleased with the entire experience. Each of us returned at different times within the week bringing others. Wonderfully fresh. The staff is very polite and attentive. The meat is incredibly clean, probably the cleanest I've had in comparison to the other Indian restaurants in Northampton/Amherst. Their lassis are heavy on the yogurt, perhaps it is regional. I am not very informed on lassies but it was very thick. As you enter the restaurant you are welcomed with a bright blinding light pointed directly at the people waiting to be seated. The decor is boring and the table is covered with cheep brown paper. There are at least 4-6 India waitstaff who are walking around aimlessly. No one seams to be in-charged. The food, is just as boring. The lack of seasoning in this place is the worst we ever had in an Indian restaurant. Will never go back! read more

I had buffet and the food was alright. It was ok as an american version of indian food. Not on par with food at other indian places nearby My main issue was with the service. The restaurant wasnt busy at albut still the waiters were not attentive. Even to ask for cheque, I had to ask loudly to get the waiter's attention. this is an update to my early review after their opening. i have since returned about 10-12 times, and each meal was outstanding. there have been occasional dishes i didn't care for, but that was just a matter of personal taste; the food has always been perfectly prepared and presented. my most recent trip, however, inspired this extra review; one dish i ordered came with 3 sauces on the side. as usual, i had too much food and took some home. when i went to reheat the food a few days later, i discovered that not only had they saved the 2 sauces i'd used sparingly, they also observed that i scarfed down the 3rd one, and gave me a fresh container of it! read more

Bombay Royale started off very well. The food was delicious and always warm and fresh. However, in the past few months, their food quality has gone down the drain. The food of the buffet or the oil in which it is cooked is stale (stomach upset alert!), food is cold, naan bread is rubbery, and rice is under cooked. My family and I were regular customers and we really loved the food. But I would think twice before going to Bombay Royale again! read more

Great Indian buffet, definitely a 1-2x a week destination even though I'm based in Amherst!

Caveat: I arrived at 7:00 pm, was seated at 7:40 pm (busy night!), ordered dinner around 8:15, appetizers came around 8:45, and the last of dinner was finally arriving at 10:00 pm. We were waiting and waiting for someone to take our order, our drinks took a good 30 minutes to arrive at the table, and the service was so, so ridiculously slow. In fact, so slow that we ended up taking out a deck of cards to pass the time... That being said, the food was scrumptious. It was probably some of the best Indian food I've ever had in this entire region. The flavors were developed, complex, well-seasoned, cooked to order, and flat-out delicious. I intend to come back when I have hours and hours to spare, try it again, and will update my review once they get their service together. I think it's just because the restaurant is new. We were in town after hiking nearby. Stopped in for dinner with my boyfriend and his 13 yo son. We all enjoyed our meals. Service was very quick. I had the Spinach Kofta, the kid ordered the Coconut Mushroom (mushrooms cooked in a creamy coconut sauce), and my boyfriend had the Chicken Phaal. The Phaal was extremely spicy! I'm serious. (For thr record, my boyfriend and I are a couple of legit pepper heads with a high tolerance for spice so I don't often have a reason to call a dish "extremely spicy", lol.) Another reviewer claimed the food around here is "bland" but personally, I think that's nuts. My only suggestions for improvements would be that the portions of chutney they brought out at the beginning were really small and we waited a little while longer than we'd have liked after finishing our meals for sometime to check in and ask if we needed anything else. The menu is broad, the sauces are all delicious and the food is spiced and cooked properly. There are a wide variety of breads and condiments one can order to go with any meal. Okay let me begin by saying it's not a bad restaurant. The service is good. Being Indian I guess my expectations are a little higher for Indian restaurants but the curries here are disastrous. I ate the dosa there and it was fine. I got Vegetable Vindaloo to go. IT WAS DISTURBING. I AM SHOCKED AT HOW BAD THE FOOD WAS. When I called them to tell them how bad it was they were extremely rude. Great food, but the service was on the odd side. We called to make reservation, and were told they can't accomodate us on the time we asked for, but an hour later. We said OK and made the reservation. When we arrived there was a table open, but we weren't seated (the restaurant was quite full, but not completely). Even though we stated we have a reservation, no one really approached to ask for our name ?? and after 10-15 minutes, they stated setting up an improvised table and we were seated there. There was still an open table there. The rest of the evening we got the feeling like there was first class and second class of service, we were on the second. We were overwhelmed by the menu- so many interesting choices. We are vegetarian and one of us is gluten-free and the menu kindly lists the veggie options separately. We tried the eggplant tamarind appetizer based on a review I read here and we loved it. Very interesting mix of flavors. Eggplant was cooked just right. We had a mango dish and a veggie with coconut sauce - can't remember the name but it's the one with the "drumsticks". We liked both a lot although I'm not sure I'd order either again, partly because there are so many other things to try. Each had distinct and different kinds of flavors. I had plain nan- very good and plentiful. Service-wise-- everyone was very nice but they could definitely be more attentive. We weren't in any hurry but if we had been, I might have been annoyed by the kind of long wait between apps and entrees. Bombay Royale has added an option to get a to-go box from their buffet. I paid $8.59 for a generous portion of Chili Chicken, Aloo Gobi, Naan, and rice. It was a nice lunch, shared between 2 people. I would have been willing to pay another dollar in order to have some of the sauces, etc to accompany what they gave me. The food was great, though the naan was a little tough. We used to drive to Chicopee to have the buffet at Priya (which is certainly delicious) but I'm perfectly happy staying closer to home to have lunch at Bombay Royale. The weekend lunch seems to be an expanded version of the daily version. They're closed on Mondays. read more

The best Indian food by far in Western Mass. Fresh, authentic, affordable, delicious! It's BYOB so I suggest stopping at the excellent wine and beer store across the street (Provisions) before you head in. My husband and I came here for the first time on his birthday. The service was impeccable and the Lamb Korma was rich and sweet. Upon hearing that its my husband's birthday, they made the most amazing dessert: a carrot pudding with cardamom, cinnamon, and rose berries.
