BEST Mango Lassi I've had in NYC so far! And this is being compared to two different places in Jackson Heights that are said to have "the best mango lassi" - this place definitely has both of them beat! For context, I'm married to an Indian man: we've traveled to India multiple times together and have visited countless Indian restaurants throughout the US. We recently moved to NYC and have already explored a vast number of Indian restaurants since landing here. That said, my husband and I both agree that this restaurant has the best mango lassi in the city. Okay but to back things up, we stopped in here after attending the Oktoberfest that was occurring nearby as we're vegetarian and needed something more filling than a pretzel. We ordered the Chili Paneer and Papdi Chaat appetizers to share along with an order of Papadam. All three of these dishes were tasty and satisfying. This made us both happy! The Chili Paneer was spicy (as it should be), so I ordered us a mango lassi to help bring down the heat - which is what led me to my mango-lassi-rant at the beginning of this review. Haha! One of the best and most authentic Indian spots that I have experienced. We ordered the Chicken Tikka Kebab which came out quick; it was beautifully marinated and incredibly tinder with the Naan. The curry chicken, and Tikka masala, and veg samosas were packed full of flavor. This experience easily has placed Bombay Indian Restaurant at the top of my list for Indian cuisine. Top three contender for the best Indian I have ever had. Perfect orders everytime from the staff. I always get take away or delivery but the in house experience during my very brief waits was always one of happiness. We really love their chicken tikka masala and their lamb vindaloo. They have wonderful appetizers emulating street food. The samosas and onion pakora are total fire. The lassi's are super thick as well and come in a variety of daily flavors. Today I decided to venture in as I was craving some spicy Indian food and today they delivered! I ordered the meat and veg lunch special for $11 and asked the server what the spiciest dish was. He recommended the lamb vindaloo and I had wanted to try their okra so got that as my veg dish along with a naan. Both were delicious and hit the spot. He even gave me a couple of green chilies on the side as I told him I like my food spicy. So give this place a try folks. The food still isn't blow you away amazing...but I intend to try a few more dishes over time to give a more balanced review. They are welcoming and accommodating and their chai is delicious! My husband and I stumbled across this gem right after getting off of the ferry, and oh my God it was amazing. Food was authentic and the spices just blend together so wonderfully. This was a pleasant, unexpected surprise. I popped in for a quick late lunch yesterday around 2:45pm. I work about a block from here, and Bombay's is a bit under the radar compared to other nearby establishments, including most of the ones on its own block - Fraunces Tavern and Dead Rabbit on the other side on Water Street are nearby neighbors. I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting when I walked in, but it was definitely much more casual than I assumed from the exterior. It's one step up from self-service buffet style, and they were expecting mine to be a to-go order - there is no wait service here, nor is it needed. It's very no-frills, and gives off almost an ethnic fast food vibe. If you're looking for a formal white tablecloth experience, this isn't it. The guy manning the food counter was very helpful/informative without being condescending. Indian food is not my wheelhouse, and I'm not ashamed to claim ignorance in that regard. Without my having to ask a lot of questions, he picked up on my lack of knowledge and immediately offered a few free samples so I could figure out which meats went best with my palate. I opted for their two meat/side of naan lunch special, which came to about $16 or $17. I have to think chicken tikka masala is the best known of the mainstream Indian dishes or close to it; it's one I've actually had before and enjoyed - that was an easy call. My initial second selection was a lamb dish that the guy immediately cautioned was spicy, and he offered me a quick nip to confirm. I could have handled it theoretically, but it was a LITTLE too much for my palate. Instead I opted for the curry chicken. I was again given the caveat that most of that dish had bone in it, but when I demurred and asked if I could double up on the tikka masala, he immediately told me he'd just give me the boneless chunks of the breast meat instead. Very pleasant fellow, and a significant part of the positive experience overall. I loved the chicken tikka masala. It was honestly one of the better versions I've had, with a sauce that was just the right balance of milkiness and tomato. In both chicken dishes, the meat was juicy, tender and flavorful. I wasn't as crazy about the curry sauce - it was a little too bland, which is rare for me to say when it comes to Indian food. So in the future, I'd probably just steer clear and zero in again on the tikka masala. For my naan side, they let me have the garlic one, which was very scrumptious. Not the best I've had, but solid overall - not as airy and crispy as I usually like it, but it was devoured promptly nonetheless. The service was excellent for what it was. Again, you didn't have a waiter involved in the meal, so my experience was limited to the fellow behind the food display and the guys over on the other side prepping the naan. Beyond the informative guidance provided by the gentleman with the meats, I thought it was kind of sweet that the two cooks over at the naan station profusely apologized for the wait on the garlic naan, which amounted to...maybe 30 seconds. Clearly high standards on the turnaround. This is a little pricey for a super casual, fast food-type experience, even for the area. As a result this probably won't be a regular spot but I can certainly envision myself being a repeat customer in the not-too-distant future. read more

I just moved to FiDi last month and so I am on a hunt for my new go-to Indian food spot. I ordered from here on Monday - we got garlic naan, paneer tikka masala and samosa chaat. I really liked the samosa chaat, it hit the spot. Only thing is that I asked for no cilantro on top, yet it came with cilantro on top. The garlic naan was really good and I was able to rewarm so it wasn't soggy. The paneer tikka masala was interesting, the gravy didn't taste like normal gravy.. it was more on the tangy tomato paste side, not on the creamy side. I also asked for this to be spicy but it was not. We also did a cost analysis across of couple of places that do deliver by me and this one was the most reasonably priced so that's good. Also this place serves rice complementary with the entree so that's a good perk that I didn't expect in NYC. The chicken and potatoes in the Chicken Vindaloo were delicious, especially with rice, but unless you have a very high spice tolerance, I would recommend getting a different entree. The Boti Kebab was okay but I would have liked it more if it was more tender. The naan was above average in my book. Very soft and perfect for dipping. read more

Right before Christmas I had a craving for Saag Paneer so during the lunch I decided to order two days worth of food via UberEats. The packaging and delivery was on point, everything was so fresh. I ordered my Saag Paneer, basmati rice and Peshawari Naan, which is naan made with almonds and raisins. There was no lunch special but the portions were generous enough that the order last two days. I didn't know that the saag paneer came with rice so I should not have order the extra side of rice. I definitely would order from this place again. read more

Love these folks -- my favorite Indian food in the area!! Super flavorful, good portions, lovingly prepared, reliable delivery, and - vitally - very accommodating of vegans. Most items on the vegetarian menu can be made vegan if you specify it in your order notes. Generally this just means the replacement of butter/ghee, so the dish is virtually identical and just as delicious. P.S. if you're ordering delivery or pickup, I'd recommend going straight to their website -- they're very responsive and I believe it reduces fees on both sides. Highly recommended! Thanks for being so accommodating to vegans so we can enjoy this delicious food. Our favorites are the black or yellow Daal (lentils), Rajma (kidney beans -- we don't see this too often but it's delicious), and of course Chana Masala. We were so excited to try the food here. We ordered delivery as they are only a few minutes from our place. They had a special via DoorDash which included an appetizer, 2 entrees wit rice and two drinks for a set price. So, we looked at the multitude of offerings on the promo and jumped right in! . We ordered the chicken tikka appetizer (with a nominal up-charge noted if we requested white meat- (we did). Then we each ordered chicken vindaloo (again, paying for the white meat only option). W ordered two canned sodas, garlic naan and an extra basmati rice. The chicken tikka appetizer was nothing special and tasted as though it was not cooked fresh for our order. The basmati rice was certainly not fresh as it had become crunchy. The chicken vindaloo was quite flavorful. You could really taste the cinnamon and we saw cloves in the sauce as well. The portion size was decidedly small, although that may be part of the promo. Regardless, it arrived quickly and was tasty enough that we were satisfied. This place is an amazing authentic quick bite. Located in a very busy area around wall street, Bombay stands out among many others. Mostly because of it's flavors. I've thoroughly enjoyed their Butter chicken- a creamy tomato based sace with spiced chicken, Chicken Tikka- Tandoori roasted chicken and Keema Matar-Delicious spiced chopped lamb in a spicy sauce wit6h green peas (highly recommend). They have excellent garlic naan and regular naan. Always fresh, buttery, soft and crispy at once. The service is quick and pleasant. The chai tea is one of the most amazing Chai's I have ever had in my lifetime. The herbs were so amazingly present and comforting.
