This food truck had the longest line at Off the Grid: Treasure Island this past Saturday, selling asian bbq and several side dishes on their menu. The line went fast, with orders ready immediately after paying. I got the crispy chicken potstickers, and they were okay. They were certainly crispy on the outside, but the wrapper consistency was a bit stiff and dry (kind of like when you eat something stale or not fresh). Luckily the chicken and veggie filling had decent flavor, and I grabbed some soy sauce packets for dipping, so that helped add a bit more flavor. Rare that I give 1 star to a place, but this was truly awful. If this was at a restaurant, I would have sent it back. I had the Korean bbq chicken, which came out to $23. Its noted as "Most Popular"...but it was probably the most overcooked chicken I have ever eaten. No joke, the chicken was so dry and chewy. Usually when people say "it was like jerky!" there is some hyperbole to it, but this literally resembled jerky. Several pieces I just could not chew. The grill marks tasted like burnt rubber. The sauce was awful too. It was sooo salty and overpowering, and it was drenched in it. The garlic noodles might have been decent, I don't know. All I could taste was the incredibly salty sauce on it. The best thing on the plate was the salad. The only positive was that it was quick, as there was zero line. Other trucks had lines of 5-20 people, this one had zero line (which is a reason I picked it). By the time I finished giving my money, my food was ready to go. Honestly, most food trucks are so overrated and overpriced. Years ago they may have been a convenient meal on the go, but now its become a trendy foodie thing. This review is for the Bombzies booth at Eat Real Festival 2017. Not a huge line, we got served quickly. Ordered one each of the Korean BBQ and Teriyaki for $5 each. It was a massive amount of food, especially at a festival. Probably at least 3 chicken thighs on each skewer, if not more. We took it to go. It was a tad dry, but not terrible. Strong smokey grilled flavor. Wasn't a huge difference between the two flavors we got. We asked for kim chee on the side and the workers dished out a generous serving. That was nice. Kim chee was not that spicy. Solid offering, generous portion sizes, ridiculous value for "festival" food, friendly workers. Wouldn't go out of the way or wait in a huge line for it...it's just grilled chicken. Also, the dryness of the BBQ might just depend on who's cookin' it. read more

I stopped by Food Truck Mafia in Bishop Ranch 1 in San Ramon and saw three sandwich trucks. I tried Koja Kitchen before and was intrigued by the strong aroma of the grill emanating from the Bombzies truck. They offer both rice bowls and baguette sandwiches of various meat combos - Korean, Lemongrass, Thai Curry for example. I got the Chicken Lemongrass Baguette with a side of the Kimchi Queso fries. The sandwich was pretty large and had plenty of large chicken chunks. The lemongrass flavor was a bit weak and the chicken a little drier than I liked. I did get lots of tanginess from the Sriracha mayo and kimchi. Not bad, the flavors did have some pop and the sandwich was messy in a good way (3 stars). Kimchi Queso Fries were like a hybrid between steak fries and nachos, with some Kimchi flavors snuck in. The fries were hot and crispy. Nice K-Mex side! (4 stars) I'm thinking the rice bowls may be a better vehicle for the grilled meats and sauces instead of the baguette. Less messy too. read more

Most are bringing nothing new or exciting to the table and rarely do the prices merit the trade off of not dining in a restaurant. With that said though, I'm doing a little happy dance for the food at Bombzie's BBQ. At a recent Presidio Twilight event I sampled Bombzie's Korean Rice Bowl ($10, with chicken). Bombzie's claims to have started with an Asian BBQ obsession and a small Weber grill. Whatever their origins, I was very pleased with their offering. The Korean Rice Bowl was flavor-rich, topped with fresh green onions and ample kimchi, and contained a phenomenal volume of chicken. So much chicken in fact, that I actually had leftovers. How often does one say that about food truck serving sizes? Whether the flavors of Bombzie's rice bowl owed to any fancy footwork on the grill or in the truck itself I've no clue. For all I know, the whole thing was grilled then bathed in Sriracha. That wouldn't be a complaint. I found the flavors spicy and complex and when I saw their truck at another event recently I was tempted to return (a line kept me from doing so). I don't believe Bombzie's is doing anything unique but I do think their prices are on point and that they serve up a mean and satisfying Korean Rice Bowl. If you have hesitations, split one with a friend; there's enough protein in there for two. Bombzie's BBQ caters for groups of 50 and up, a neat little fact to squirrel away for the future. read more

I found Bombzies purely by chance as the Millbrae Japanese Culture Festival and was quite excited to try it. Whats not to like about meat on a stick after all? The stall setup is nice as you can see them grilling the meat on a BBQ at the back of the tent and they then keep the meats warm in one of those metal buffet containers. I feel they would benefit immensely by offering some kind of additional sauce, maybe even having heated sauce in the buffet warmer so the Chicken absorbs it making a little juicier. Honestly this place disappointed me so bad, I'm not sure what make me more upset about this place, not only was the food not freshly cooked but had no flavor what so ever, the customer service was very poor and they guy with the next tattoos was beyond rude when taking our orders, then I have to hear him speak in Spanish so rudely to his co-workers who are cooking, calling them all kinds of inappropriate slurs, if you are at a food truck event I would recommend you skip passed this one! The long line in front of their stall seemed to prove that their olfactory marketing worked. You can get an extremely generous portion of chicken on a skewer for $5, or a rice bowl for $7 or $8, I forget. I opted for the skewer and it was easily the best "bang for your buck" at the festival. I got the Spicy Korean BBQ, though there was also Vietnamese lemongrass and Thai curry. It was filling, covered in delicious sauce (not actually spicy though), and dripped everywhere. It also came in a hastily wrapped foil, which ended up leaking sauce all over me, but hey, its a festival and people are busy. I'll definitely be on the lookout for their shack again. I went to Rock Wall Winery with my friend for the Holy Mother Trucker event to celebrate Mother's Day. After perusing the food trucks, we decided to have Bombzies. The chicken on the BBQ just smelled so inviting but the line of about 20 people was not. It was by far, the longest line at any of the food trucks there. Once we got to the front of the line, the lady who was taking orders was extremely friendly and quickly got us our food - Korean BBQ chicken on a baguette ($7) and Korean BBQ chicken rice bowl with kimchi on top ($8). My bowl was very filling and the chicken was fresh. I loved how the flavorful sauce seeped into my rice. My friend, however, was not quite as impressed. Although she enjoyed the chicken as well, her baguette was stale which ruined the experience for her. This is a solid food truck to go to if you're hungry and the smell of cooking chicken will attract you.
