Bon Bon is a minimal frills Vietnamese spot which has a bit of a cafe vibe inside. The Thai tea is really good although the Vietnamese coffee doesn't hit the spot, it has a bit of an artificial vanilla flavoring to it. The shrimp spring roll is massive with fresh lettuce and veggies. The peanut sauce is pretty thick but the flavor is good. I'd recommend the spring rolls. The beef pho is decent. The broth was pretty good and the beef is okay. The lime they gave was completely dry and unsqueezable. The main complaint I have is there was way too many noodles in the bowl. The noodle to broth ratio was way off so you're racing with the noodles to drink all the broth. After a few minutes the broth is almost completely absorbed by the noodles. Overall it's still a decent spot to get your Thai tea fix. If it's a cold day and you're already in the area the pho is decent. It should be noted they do have a bathroom in the back which is nice. read more

An alluring and peaceful shop on North Ave, Bob Bob Sandwiches has excellent ambiance, with beautiful decorations and an overall soothing vibe. With a wealth of options before me, I decided to opt with the Char Siu Pork Bahn Mi, and the 8-count order of Korean Chicken Wings with rice. While the pork on the bahn mi was tender and flavorful, and the pickled vegetables were plenty, the mayo was relatively unimpressive while the bread didn't have the fortitude and crunch that any good bahn mi should. Adding some hoisin after the fact certainly helped though. The Korean Chicken Wings were perfectly cooked with a satisfyingly crunchy exterior, but the flavor itself didn't blow me away- I found that the sauce-soaked bed of rice below them provided more flavor than they did. All in all, a very solid experience, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come back before trying other Vietnamese restaurants in the area. read more

Obviously my fault but wouldn't have happened if I was in and out. Sandwiches were great though. My son ordered their Korean Philly cheesesteak and he wasn't a fan of the giardenaira. I was though. Cute eatery. Took a little while to get our order, but we also came on a whim during prime lunch time. So take that with a grain of salt. What we got: Curry fries - Ooo I liked this a lot. The fries seem like a little battered or something. They have a great texture that's tender but still has some crisp. Definitely not the soggy, limp kinds if that's more your taste. I also really liked the curry flavor (my husband said it was so-so). It has a slight sweetness to it that I enjoyed--sometimes curry can be too intense. But I thought it went nicely with the fries (plus I may or may not have poured the leftover on some rice at home later). Lemongrass chicken bahn mi - This was fine. I think I wanted more lemongrass flavor though (but I like lemongrass a lot). The bread was a little too much for me--it was just slightly thicker than I prefer. But otherwise solid bahn mi. I was told the spiciest thing would be the Korean chicken wings. The wings were fried way too crispy and dried out and the sauce was drizzled over the rice rather than on the wings. The korokke which was also fried for too long. The beef curry fries are a good concept and have flavor but the execution needs help. It's way too much curry sauce so the fries become soggy. The pieces of beef are also super tiny. The bulgogi cheese steak was a total flop. The marinade for the beef tasted terrible. The giardianiera doesn't mesh well with the bulgogi flavor. Local Vietnamese restaurant that has become our to-go in the area. I usually order beef pho noodles, noodle salads, and their shrimp spring rolls. Huge portions so I'm usually taking home leftovers or asking my partner for help. There's usually seating available with drivers coming in and out every so often for pick up orders. I personally haven't seen any groups hanging out with games but there are games and books available in their community bookshelf. Reasonably priced, consistent, comfort food that's nearby. Delightful Neighborhood Restaurant with Fabulous Food and Inviting Ambience This is such a delightful little restaurant! The food is extraordinary, and they have a larger menu than one would expect in a neighborhood cafe. The ambience is inviting, with lots of artworks on the walls and if you love books, you can sit in a table framed by a bookshelf full of interesting, artistic and philosophical offerings. The owners are lovely, the tables have good space between them, and the service is fast. This feels like it would become my neighborhood hangout it I lived in Chicago. The beef pho lacked richness in the broth & honestly had no clear taste. It was very bland. The banh mi was a bit soggy due to the carrots/raddish & mayo (?) which I didn't mind but the bread made it hard to really bite into which I found weird since it was soggy. The pork meat was not flavorful as well. As someone who has eaten a lot of Vietnamese food, I'm definitely not gonna order from here again because everything lacked in flavor. When I tell you I am the most picky person when it comes to wings & these surprised me in the best wayyyyy! For us service is at least half the experience. The music was so loud it was almost impossible to hear the cashier to place my order. In fact I never actually made out what she asked me. My husband had to answer for me. And worse I don't know if the WiFi was out or not but the songs kept stopping and starting super annoying. In the city on Saturday, and we randomly walked past this spot after another place we wanted to go was on a wait. We checked the menu for vegan options, and found quite a few. We decided to head in. The girl behind the counter was extremely helpful and also vegan, which always helps. The four of us got a ton of vegan food from the lemongrass/tofu sandwiches to the wings to the spring rolls. I am beginning to stumble upon more spots in Wicker Park that I cannot wait to try. I was driving down North Ave and the "Bon Bon Vietnamese" sign flashed past. I inhaled and did a double take, realizing this meant I have banh mi access in close proximity. Mini victory. As I added BBVS to my Yelp bookmarks, I prioritized trying their food the next chance I had. This is what I ordered: 8 pc (full order) Korean Bon Bon Wings ($10.50) Char Siu Banh Mi ($6.95) Thai Iced Tea ($3.50) The 4 stars are for their banh mi. I'm a fan. If I ever want to swap out my lunch to pack a banh mi, I'll know where to order. The char siu pork was sweetly glazed. Every bite had some jalapeno and pickled vegetables. The next time I order here I'd request extra helpings of each because I like my sandwiches to have an extra kick. Bread and ingredients were fresh. Their sandwiches are delicious and affordable and I hope to try their other options soon: "Classic"; Lemongrass Chicken; Coconut Curry Chicken; Vietnamese Ham, Egg & Pate; Korean Bulgogi. Their Korean wings were served differently than I'm used to. The sauce was more tangy (like gochujang-red chili paste) than savory and garlicky which I prefer. While the wings were freshly fried and sauced, the dash of sesame seeds was a little too generous in my opinion. The chewiness of the brown rice, tanginess of the sauce and crunchiness of the sesame seeds were not my favorite combo. The vibe here reminds me of Wormhole Coffee, hip and eclectic, with (presumably) teenagers manning the cash register and filling the orders. When I phoned in for pick-up, I said, "Can I please have the char siu BBQ pork banh mi?" to which the response was, "it doesn't have barbecue sauce in it." This makes me smile as I type it. Honey, char siu means barbecued pork. I didn't actually say that, especially not with "honey" at the beginning. But I thought it. Which makes me hesitant to try their pho and ramen without preparing myself... for the food to be enjoyed through the lens of a hipster pan-asian restaurant in Wicker Park: Japanese/Korean/Vietnamese mixed in with Whole Foods or Native Foods. Vegans! I'm sure this can be a spot where you can comfortably dine out and get your banh mi with seitan and vegan mayo. They have kale salad, veggie bowls, and veggie wings as well. It's awesome to see so many veggie-friendly options. All in all, a solid 4 stars for stellar banh mi's and I will probably just stick to the sandwiches. read more

I ate lunch here yesterday. I ordered the fries they were soooooo yummy best fries I have had. I also had the wings which were sooo good. I also was able to try kimchi for the first time and I really liked it, shot out to the restaurant for this, giving me that experience, thank you. I look forward to going back I want to try the kimchi fries and dumplings next. But will for sure be back for the wings and fries. There's a reason on a Friday night the vegan/vegetarian restaurant (Handlebar) 30 second walk is a 45 minute wait and this place was empty. One of the worst restaurants I've ever had. First my husband and I walk in, the guy doesn't even say hi. Was doing something on the side and just turns to us without saying anything. Uhhhh ok lol We ordered the vegan gyozas, vegan ramen and the yaki soba stir fried noodles with tofu. No clue what was in the gyozas but it was super mushy and gross. My husbands ramens broth literally had zero flavor. It tasted like seaweed water. He just ate the noodles and veggies and couldn't finish the broth. My dish literally tasted like high fructose corn syrup and lemon concentrate. I couldn't finish it. I wish we paid attention to the cleanliness when walking in and going to the counter. The table was sticky and so were the other ones we touched. This place says it's Vietnamese yet is in no way shape or form Vietnamese. It's so bad it's offensive to the culture. Pure example of a restaurant owner who doesn't care at all. I would never recommend this place to anyone. There's no way this place will last. read more
