Early June, 2025. Skagway was a port call for our Alaska cruise vacation, and we were staying at the Holland America Skagway Inn. This restaurant, which is affiliated with the hotel, was only a short walking distance from the hotel (and the historic area) -- which was appreciated on a rainy, dreary evening. The Bonanza, which features cold draft Alaskan beers and hot food, seems to be popular with locals and tourists alike. The menu offers something for everyone but is not overwhelming -- from starters, to fresh salads, to sandwiches, to burgers, and to rice bowls. They can also accommodate gluten sensitivities. They also have a good selection of beers and specialty drinks, as well as Bonanza gear for sale. My husband wanted to eat light after all of the cruise ship food, so he ordered the House-made Alaska Chowder ($15) from the Starters Menu. The chowder featured local halibut + salmon, red potatoes, bacon, and clams, and was served with oyster crackers. He said that it tasted good, and was creamy as he prefers, but was somewhat small and light on seafood pieces at that price point. I was craving vegetarian fare, so I ordered the Buddha Bowl ($19) from the Rice Bowls Menu. This was a tasty and generous combination of jasmine rice, chickpeas, roasted butternut squash, roasted red peppers, Kimchi, kale, and Buddha sauce. If I were making this myself, I'd add some tofu cubes for protein and reduce the amount of kimchi, but overall it was good. The atmosphere was rather quiet while we were there in the early evening, with a few tv screens on. However, they offer live music and a pool table so I'm sure that it's more lively at other times. Our waiter was attentive without being overbearing. We would eat here again if we return to Skagway. read more

Fox was our waitress, super friendly and checked on us often, massive Minnesota decor much to the delight of my husband. Drink of the week: chocolate covered cherry bliss, so good Fish and chips : the halibut was flaky on the inside, but nice and and crispy on the outside , fantastic fish Miners burger: beef patty, pulled pork and Onion ring, cheddar cheese BBQ sauce. Teen said it was good Blackened salmon sandwich: huge piece of salmon with an adequate amount of blackening seasoning, which was too spicy for me, but if you like spice, you would like it fries were crispy and abundant. When we arrived we were notified that they were out of certain items. I believe they were out of burgers. My daughter's boyfriend tried the beer, and said it was okay. Service was good. On our Alaskan Cruise port in Skagway we stopped at Bonanza for lunch and refreshments. There are nine of us, two with walkers. Seated in the back by pool table. Our waiter Lehi was very attentive and gave us great service. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Food served hot, fries great! My SO said it's the best grilled cheese he's ever had in a restaurant. Fish & Chips were great. Queso & Chips were delicious. Tortilla chips on crunchy side like I like them. Queso not spicy even though it has a next to it. We were all hot and hungry. Went in so I could drink a beer and everyone could use the bathroom. Maybe planning on going to one of the other places, but ended up sitting down and eating based on what was coming out of the kitchen while I was waiting for the beer. Bathrooms were clean. Chowder was outstanding as was the fish sandwich and the fish and chips I ordered another basket of both. So above the cruise food in every way. Great drafts, I needed a few after trying not to buy stuffed animals all day. I thought the service was great and unlike every other tourist destination I've ever been they didn't have automatic gratuity. The food here is pretty average, hence three stars. It's really about ordering certain items on the menu and avoiding others. The range of quality of product is probably responsible for the widely diverse reviews. Order wisely and you'll be happy. Get the wrong items and it will be kinda grim. Go for the daily specials. The tacos on Tuesday and meatloaf on Thursday are really good choices. The burgers are also pretty tasty. These are what keep me coming back. Then there is the average stuff. The fish and chips is ok, but that's about it. Fresh fish but quite doughy batter. I'm not a fan of the wings. They aren't bad, but also not particularly good. Came here for dinner, Chloe was our waitress and she was wonderful so anyone who sits at one of her tables is lucky! This is your standard bar food, but greasy but that's what you get when you order a burger with sautéed onions. Sautéed onions were delicious btw and burger was good. Couldn't find any bacon in the potato salad or taste any bleu cheese though... Kid ordered the chicken bites and fries. They were good. Fries on point and they just load them on. My dad ordered the halibut and chips. Halibut was a little tough/overcooked for my taste but still good and the tartar sauce is out of a bottle but ‍. Decent food all around. Doesn't look like much but i was 4 hours late for lunch so I sat down at bar to eat at 4 pm, today, Sunday 6/4. Big mistake! Another couple I was not with and I sat down at bar at same time. After ignoring us and doing chores for 5 minutes he gave other couple menus and continued to ignore me. The bar was peninsular shaped and he proceed to help customers and do chores without turning around for a minimum of 5 minutes or more. I did try calling out but I was drained out by the cacophony of background noise. I started practicing semaphore every time he turned slightly. Finally, I had to ask a floor waiter to get his attention, and I finally received a menu. It took another 5 minutes to get his attention so I could place my order, a burger, fries and a glass of soda ($22). Another server finally brought out my order in a reasonable amount of time, but left me no straw for my soda. It took several more minutes before I could get the bartender's attention to get my straw. The soda was terrific. The fries were very good but a little too seasoned for my taste. The burger came with pulled pork on top which I considered overkill, but I assume its addition is there way of justifying the price. The pulled pork makes the Bonanza burger really salty. The burger while tasty, was very "juicy," so much so that the bottom of its bun just disintegrated and I finished eating it withfork and knife. Finally, I had to wait several miinures to get the bartender's attention so could get my bill. After leaving me my check, he never came back to collect my payment, so I left cash including a small tip, then spoke to another server on the way out showing her that I left my payment with cash on the counter and that I was leaving. If you are very hungry, the above and all of their other dishes seemed very plentiful or generous. I just recommend you skip eating at their bar due to the outrageously poor customer service that you are likely to endure from at least the bartender, with whom I had the misfortune to contend. read more

I stopped by with my family today for lunch, while on vacation from CA & we're all real glad we did. This place had a real cool divey bar type feel to it & the food is very good. My wife & kids all had the fish & chips which they all enjoyed. The fish itself was both fresh & well seasoned as was the batter. My wife also had a hot toddy as the weather was pretty cool and rain was expected & she enjoyed that. Being a bourbon drinker myself, I had an old fashioned along with a spicy chicken sandwich. This was one of the best old fashions I've had while the sandwich was great too, it had a real good kick but not so much that one couldn't taste the sandwich; cole slaw & dill pickle chips helped round out the flavors. Bonanza Bar and grill was one of the few bar and Grill's open when our ship landed in Skagway, Red Onion was over an hour wait. We sat in the back near the pool tables, and were greeted quickly by a waiter who's pupil's eyes were wide as saucers. The food was ok, The pork nachos were a hit, however the chips and cheese was only mediocre. Chips were out of a bag in room temperature and the cheese seemed was out of a can. The server highly recommended the seafood chowder saying it had not just clams but also salmon in it however for the picture you can see it was very little seafood at all. I actually didn't even want to go in here because it wasn't "Alaska-ish" enough... but, by far, our best stop in Skagway!!! DEEEE LISH USSSSS!!!!! We sat at the bar and DJ and Kevin were our bartenders, although they were slammed with customers we didn't feel neglected at all or even rushed. These two were awesome!! Super cool music playing and the vibe in here was fantastic. I couldn't figure out what to have but landed on the seafood chowder, hands down THE best chowder I've ever had!! That chowder was jammed full of seafood, bacon and potatoes! HELLO!! Didn't need the bread bowl gimmick like other places, just served in a regular bowl and a side of bread and, good grief, it was superb! My boyfriend had the burger and raved about it, loved every bite! Why isn't Skagway closer to home? Not only were we impressed and thoroughly enjoyed our time and our lunch here... we hadn't noticed that our meal had taken longer than expected, but our bartenders did and apologized. We said we were fine and hadn't even noticed! But soon after, the chef/manager/owner (?) came out personally and said he was so sorry, our lunches were delivered to the wrong table and he would be making us fresh plates... our drinks were on the house! Totally no need to do that, but really nice of them anyway! That took them above and beyond the already high marks we were giving them. He took drink orders and we had them in front of us in minutes. Bonanza is freaking cool! Total dive with a lot of fun, amazing burgers, excellent service, rock music and the opportunity to leave your mark. My husband and I both ordered the same burger, the Miners' burger, and it was really, really delicious. It's a 1/3 pound burger with grilled onions, some kind of bbq sauce, cheddar cheese on a brioche bun and pickles on the side. The bun was heaven. The burger was cooked exactly right - medium well, just a bit of smoke on the outside, super juicy. The onions were juicy but crunchy. The cheese was quality cheese. The fries were also very good - crisp on the outside, soft on the inside. Prices were reasonable at about $15 for each of us before tip with sodas ordered. You get a choice of orzo pasta, garden salad or quinoa salad if you want one of those instead of fries with your burger. We were seated right when we walked in the door. Our waitress greeted us shortly thereafter and kept our drinks filled. They also have wraps, fish 'n chips, fish tacos, sandwiches, wings and what looked like really tasty queso carnitas fries but my stomach was full. The ambiance of Bonanza is just great. The walls are red with $1 bills plastered high with the drawings and notes of customers. There are a couple big screens playing sports in the corner. The bar's in the middle of the room. As I mentioned, they have rock music playing and it's loud, but the place is loud in a jovial, fun-loving way. We could still hear ourselves and the waitress just fine. The only constructive criticism I have is to keep the tables cleaner. Ours had a big ketchup squirt from previous diners on the beer box holding the condiments and silverware. We asked the waitress for markers and I drew on a $1 bill and she added it to the box to be stuck to the wall later, woo hoo! If I lived here, I'd eat here on a regular basis. The restaurant was packed because of the cruise ships at the port. Nice bar area with TVs and bartenders were very friendly. Our server was very efficient and attentive. Food was served in less than 5 minutes. We ordered deep fried pickles and crab-cake sandwich. The deep fried pickles were very crispy outside (very flavorful batter) and the pickles were so juicy! Dip it in the ranch dressing... VERY ADDICTIVE!! The crab meat sandwich.... so-so. Wish they toasted the buns or deep fried the crab-cake to get some texture.
