    Alaskan Chowder. ($15, June 2025).
    Laura S.

Early June, 2025. Skagway was a port call for our Alaska cruise vacation, and we were staying at the Holland America Skagway Inn. This restaurant, which is affiliated with the hotel, was only a short walking distance from the hotel (and the historic area) -- which was appreciated on a rainy, dreary evening. The Bonanza, which features cold draft Alaskan beers and hot food, seems to be popular with locals and tourists alike. The menu offers something for everyone but is not overwhelming -- from starters, to fresh salads, to sandwiches, to burgers, and to rice bowls. They can also accommodate gluten sensitivities. They also have a good selection of beers and specialty drinks, as well as Bonanza gear for sale. My husband wanted to eat light after all of the cruise ship food, so he ordered the House-made Alaska Chowder ($15) from the Starters Menu. The chowder featured local halibut + salmon, red potatoes, bacon, and clams, and was served with oyster crackers. He said that it tasted good, and was creamy as he prefers, but was somewhat small and light on seafood pieces at that price point. I was craving vegetarian fare, so I ordered the Buddha Bowl ($19) from the Rice Bowls Menu. This was a tasty and generous combination of jasmine rice, chickpeas, roasted butternut squash, roasted red peppers, Kimchi, kale, and Buddha sauce. If I were making this myself, I'd add some tofu cubes for protein and reduce the amount of kimchi, but overall it was good. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The atmosphere was rather quiet while we were there in the early evening, with a few tv screens on. However, they offer live music and a pool table so I'm sure that it's more lively at other times[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. Our waiter was attentive without being overbearing. We would eat here again if we return to Skagway.

Fox was our waitress, super friendly and checked on us often, [[HIGHLIGHT]]massive Minnesota decor much to the delight of my husband.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Drink of the week: chocolate covered cherry bliss, so good Fish and chips : the halibut was flaky on the inside, but nice and and crispy on the outside , fantastic fish Miners burger: beef patty, pulled pork and Onion ring, cheddar cheese BBQ sauce. Teen said it was good Blackened salmon sandwich: huge piece of salmon with an adequate amount of blackening seasoning, which was too spicy for me, but if you like spice, you would like it fries were crispy and abundant. Definitely would come back next time we're in town.

Don't be cheap and order cod - upgrade to halibut!

Cool local bar that I would visit regularly if we lived here... This is a quick review from some hungry cruise ship passengers tired of ship food. The halibut fish and chips were amazing, and the service was just as stellar! We were in and out within 45 minutes and off to our next adventure. Do not hesitate to stop in for a quick bite or drink, and don't forget to tip your waiter!

Really cool place! They offer quite a substantial menu and have lots of delicious beer. The bartender was personable and fast! We had a really nice time chatting with other tourists and some friendly locals. We recommend that you stop by Bonanza Bar & Grill. Don't forget to try the Spruce-tip beer, it's delicious.

Seafood chowder with crusty bread. Yummy.

Little local bar that was recommended to us by our tour guide. We got Bloody Mary, a beer and the seafood chowder... so say the chowder (which has salmon and clams in it) was the best chowder I've ever had, would be an UNDERSTATEMENT!! Soooo yummy. Not sure what the low stars review are about cause service was spot on, people were friendly and the place was nice and clean!

The Spruce Ale is very TASTY! Lively atmosphere and great music. I get a good vibe from this place.

There was a bit of a wait, but we grabbed a beer and relaxed while waiting for tables to clear. Our waiter was super friendly and attentive, and I really appreciated the decor throughout the restaurant. As a gal originally from Cape Cod, I especially loved the nautical theme! Of course, I ordered the fish and chips, and it came out hot, fresh, and delicious. The batter was a little crispier than I'm used to, but I still thoroughly enjoyed the flaky, white fish. The guys in our group enjoyed their meals as well. The ladies' room was clean, which is always appreciated. Overall, I highly recommend this spot if you don't mind a bit of a wait. For us, it was absolutely worth it. I also want to mention that we were visiting on a cruise ship, and this restaurant was a very convenient walk to and from the port. If you're in town for the day, it's an easy and worthwhile stop!

We were promptly seated. Several customers were there so place appeared busy. We were on a time crunch so ordered the crab cakes and king crab legs. Both items came out in reasonable time. The $21 crab cakes were not great and had significant breading (2/5 stars). The $119 two piece king crab served with clarified butter was excellent and tasty (5/5 stars). They give you the appropriate utensils and pickers to cut the claws open. Overall good experience but wish I could've tried more items in the menu. Would return when I'm in the area!

It was a little after 1 and there were several cruise ships docked, so the lobby was quite full. When I walked up to the podium, the host explained our options: go to the pub for drinks and a limited menu, or wait 15-30 minutes for a table upstairs with the full menu. We weren't in a hurry and wanted all the options, so we decided to wait for a table. It was about 20 minutes before the host called us. After being seated and checking out the menu, I chose a mug of the house-brewed root beer along with a Alaskan Sandwich, subbing the fries for a side salad. My wife also ordered the root beer, but with a Salmon Sandwich with a cup of soup instead. We also shared a whole Big Pickle! First, the root beer was very refreshing. Not super sweet, but still flavorful. And my sandwich was very delicious! The piece of Alaskan Greenling was so big, it was hanging over the bun. With the side salad, it was just the right amount of food, but I didn't feel too stuffed. My wife enjoyed her sandwich and loved the cup of beer cheese soup. And the big pickle offered a good crunch and contrast to our sandwiches. Overall, we had a wonderful experience. We did pass on dessert, but would try it if we came back to Alaska. The only weird thing is that there was no wifi available, and the cell signal was non-existent. We had to *gasp* talk to each other!

I was trying to get some souvenirs and she told me a couple spots to check out and held my table while I went across the street! I wanted something fresh and local and they're a great place for that. It's her parents restaurant and her mom grows herbs that they use in dishes. Olivia travels a lot so it was serendipitous that I actually got to meet her! Seemed like a spot a lot of the locals hang at, felt very homey, Cheers type everyone knows your name place with delicious food! I did a Rojito, seafood pasta and a side of crostini. The drink was so refreshing! I remember her mom was involved with its creation and of course it's her fresh grown mint! The pasta had huge chunks of very tasty seafood! Outside of being here (AK) I probably wouldn't order something like that but I'm glad I did. The pasta was delicious and the seafood was fresh. The crostini's were so good too. I hear they have great desserts but we shared a fry bread earlier and there was just no room for more. I got a shirt bc I couldn't not. I truly loved it here. Such a chill, kind vibe. If ever in Skagway I'll be back. Thank you to Olivia and team for more than making me feel welcomed.
