Unfortunately this place has gone down hill relatively quickly. Went there because it's been a while since we had a burger. It took over 10 min for someone to finally take my order. I ordered two burgers, a fry, and an onion ring. Came out to $45. Pretty steep for something so simple. The fries and onion rings were extremely burnt yet cold. Huge problem. Did not taste good at all. The burger was at least warm but definitely doesn't warrant the prices or the service. Won't be coming back. read more

I stopped by Bonanza Burger with my husband and a friend of ours yesterday. Our friend recommended it very highly, so figured we'd give it a try. It's the worlds tiniest burger joint, and easy to miss if you aren't looking for it. Parking consists of a whopping 5 spaces. Thankfully there was only me and one other vehicle in the lot. Due to the plague, we couldn't go inside. Had to order through a window, which was fine. The woman who took our order was friendly and helpful. We ordered the special of 5 burgers for like $13 and added cheese to them with extra pickles. Plus a side of chili cheese fries. Our friend ordered a double cheeseburger and fries. Burgers are basic. Like pumpkin spice and Ugg boots kind of basic. Thin patties, cooked well done. But sometimes basic is good, which is the case here. Veggies were all fresh and definitely a needed addition to the burgers. I ate two and my husband ate three. Chili cheese fries were less than stellar. They didn't taste bad, they simply didn't taste like anything. Maybe if I had salt to season properly, the chili cheese fries could have been saved. Not sure though. I gave those to my husband to eat. Food seemed to take a while to be made, but that wasn't a huge deal. There was a small amount of shade by the sign to go stand in while we waited. I really wish the parking lot had more shade to stand or a covered place to eat, since we couldn't go inside. But I've also grown accustomed to dropping the tailgate on my truck and eating there since the plague happened. Would I return? Yeah, I can see going back. I'm not making a special trip to Cottage Grove for their food, but if I happen to be there and looking for a burger from a small local business, this is where I'll go. read more

Had burgers. They will customize things, so put them on a lettuce wrap when asked (keto). Also added an extra patty (they come as 1/4 lb or maybe 1/3 for some). They came out freshly made and hot, with fresh lettuce tomato etc. on them. We did have to wait 10 min for them to get made which was fine for the burger quality we got. The Blue Ace one a fair amount of blue cheese so a nice flavor in each bite. We will defiantly go back again. read more

Is Bonanza a bar that serves great burgers? Or is it a burger joint that feels like a bar? I'm leaning toward the second one, although you can make a case for the first. I have a soft spot in my heart for choke-and-pukes, especially if cheeseburgers are involved. Never mind the big fast food chains, unless it's In-n-Out or Chick-fil-A. I like the local places that are a little rough looking and fix some mean carnivorous food. Bonanza Drive-Up fits the bill. Just as important, it's located just south of downtown Cottage Grove, a good drive off I-5, so it's a local crowd, no tourists (except us three, we found the place on Yelp). I had the Original Big Hoss Bacon Burger, which unfortunately wasn't as big as I had hoped. But then, it's only $5.99. And its bacon was so good, the two thin patties were medium-well with a strong taste, and the cheese melted off the whole thing. Even better: the Hunny and Girl both got cheeseburgers, didn't want their tomatoes nor lettuce, so I got to eat those too. They liked the fries, I was so-so about them. Free refills on the Cokes. We don't drink beer, but I have a hunch they have a large beer selection. Bonanza Drive-up: Stop in, eat up, and have a nice day. read more

I recently ate at In-N-Out Burger in Salem twice and must say Bonanza honestly has a better hamburger and the fries are much better. I always get the double with cheese and the price is nearly the same. If you don't want to Wait in a ridiculous drive up give Bonanza a try. I didn't count but the menu has a lot to choose from. They are doing something right. I spent a ton of money there in high school in the mid 70's and they were there long before then. Moved away for many years but now I stop by every time I'm in town! Decided to check it out after seeing it featured on "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives." Apparently they've been there 'forever' and unless you knew better you'd probably drive right by. Menu has every possible variation for a classic burger - ingredients are local (translation: very fresh) including Willamette Valley beef. In a word - delicious! Staff friendly, relaxed vibe. Really? I mean, really? Too bad there are not more choices for a decent burger in Cottage Grove. Overpriced, cooked to death and then dried out some more while being smashed flat on the griddle. Two ounce patties about as thick as a half dollar, and "thick cut bacon" so thin as to be nearly transparent. They should call it Joke Burger. Even though we live at cottage Grove we had never gone to the Bonanza Drive up. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't very good either. I was very disappointed in bonanza. I use to frequent the burger place years ago and it has changed for the worse. I ordered the slab burger with tater tots and was charged $16.98 with no drink. First off the burger has no flavor at all and they forgot the ham patty that was suppose to be in there. The tater tots that came it out were good but only 9 tots included in this meal. Total disappointment save your money and go elsewhere. read more

Great burgers! Thanks to Stella P's review, I went and checked this place out that I had drove by a billion times. These are old school burgers. They have the hand patted type made from fresh local beef or the thin old schoolers. Shakes are hand made and GOOOOOD! Fries could be improved on a little, but not bad. They have limited outdoor seating and inside is limited to about eight booths. As an FYI, this guy also owns Giant Burger in Springfield. Look for the cool neon Bonanza Drive Up sign on the south end of the Grove and your there! read more

We went there tonight, a busy Friday, half an hour before closing...I was really touched by how kind the obviously super hard working staff were and the food was so worth the wait, as per the usual. We got the lucky 5 combo and a couple sides, the onion rings were perfect, the burgers perfect, the fries perfect. no complaints. Bonanza burger just lost my business forever. Not that it's the worst thing ever, but my experience was bullshit and I got up and walked out after not touching my food. This is their "single cheeseburger basket" and the patty was literally half the size of the bun and charred and dry. When i asked the girl working if that was normal, she said yes. I have eaten there before and never seen anything like that. I told her I was unhappy with it and asked if I could get something else. My friend had a double cheeseburger basket and the patties on his were completely normal size. She goes and gets the cook, and the cook tells me I get what I get. If she remade it it would look just the same. I asked "well can I get what he's having". She said no. I'd have to pay full price for a different meal. She obviously took it personally because she was very rude about it. She said the most she could do it give the manager my name and number, and they will give my CREDIT toward something else on my next visit. When I asked for the managers name she refused to tell me. Used to be our go to for burgers but no longer. We ordered 2 burgers, one with fries, one with onion rings, it was over $25.00 and burgers were just meh! There was about 10 little soggy curly fries with the burgers, way less than you would get in a McDonald's happy meal. We ordered a Gringo burger which was a pretty tasteless burger and was over cooked and a Big Ben that is supposed to have a fried egg on top. The fried egg was hard as a rock and the burger was over cooked. They used to have good tasting burgers but there are better places than this at this price. I specifically routed my trip from Huntington Beach CA to Issaquah WA through Cottage Grove so I could have a grass fed burger at Bonanza Drive-Up. Totally worth the detour, the burgers are a perfect blend of flavor and texture. The grass fed beef has this wonderful clean taste that must be tried. Oh, and when you are done you will not be hungry but that should not prevent you from having the best hot fudge sundae in town. read more

Bonanza hasn't changed, we stopped in on Saturday night at 8:45pm, while they were cleaning up for the night. The staff was friendly and the food was delirious. This is one of those places that reminds you where fast food came from. A burger joint at the side of what used to be the main highway (before the Interstate came through) that offers a drive-up window without a talk-to-the-box ordering board that we've all gotten so familiar with. The burgers here aren't bad. They have "classic" burgers and then more deluxe editions. I had the bacon BBQ burger, and it was pretty good. The fries were the crinkle-cut versions that I had when I was a kid, and it was served with ketchup, ranch, and this strange orange sauce that was part 1000 Island, part something else, and definitely the predecessor to today's Big Mac sauce. The shakes here looked pretty good too (although I didn't partake). The burgers were fairly spendy, but then again that's because they probably use real beef and not the crap that McWhatever's calls hamburger. What was nice about this was that although it was counter service, I took a seat and waited (not too long) for the server to bring out my meal. The drink was in a fairly small cup (what we used before the small keg-o-coke that you get these days) and the refills were free (or at least I didn't pay for it). The TV was tuned to country music, the local newspaper was sitting on the table, and no one seemed to be in that big of a hurry. One disappointment was that the readerboard outside advertised Dave's Killer Bread, which I love, but it turns out that you can buy it there -- the burgers don't come on it, which would be even better! One other tip: the place is tiny, although there is a bar (which I didn't go into but must be similarly tiny) and tables outside. If it's a hot day and you can't bear to sit outside, then you might want to consider getting it to go. You won't find foodie paradise here, but you will find a decent burger and a reminder of what "quick service" used to look like, maybe in a more civilized time. read more

Back in the early seventies when I was a little guy - like 3 or 4 - my pops would bring me to Bonanza for lunch. Back then, a sack of 5 burgers was 95 cents. Cottage Grove hadn't been invaded by the McJunior King yet. He would hold me up to the sliding window so I could order my own food. The waitress would call me "Honey" and my milkshake was so thick, I needed a spoon to eat it. Now it is forty years later. A sack of five burgers is ten bucks, and they taste just like they did in 1974. Pops has been gone since 2004. I hold my daughter up to the window so she can order her own food, and the waitress calls her "Honey." Her blackberry milkshake gives her a purple mustache. After reading about Bonanza Drive-Up in the Wall Street Journal, we had to give it a try. We were traveling back to Seattle from CA and spending the night in Cottage Grove. The burger was really good. We split the Bandito Burger (forgot to add the jalapenos). It was very tasty and the beef was great. Had we added the jalapenos as suggested on the menu, it would have been perfect! The fries were great....crinkle cut and crispy and would have been better if we had been given more ketchup. (When our order was ready and we picked up at the window, we asked the gal if there was ketchup, a lot of ketchup in the bag....and she said, "I don't know, I didn't bag it" and handed it to us). The help is what cost them the last star. We tried to be friendly and she just wasn't. We also had a hot fudge sundae that we enjoyed. We were the only patrons at the time and our order took 10 minutes. That was fine as it was cooked to order and worth the wait. This is mine, my partners and roommates favorite place for banana splits. The Dairy Queen down the road is horrible and always has problems/ their staff has horrible attitudes so we choose to stop here one night. Firstly, the banana splits are made with soft serve local ice cream that is sooo good. They are piled high with toppings and much more reasonable price wise then Dairy Queen.
