Came here on a road trip. Lone pine is my little piece of heaven since I was a little girl and now I get to take my babies to create beautiful memories. It's August and a weekday, there's only one kind server and a few workers in the kitchen, so don't come hungry. The place is ample and clean and has a great view of Mt. Whitney. Went to check out this restaurant as it had a rating of 3 plus. No complementary chips or salsa. Ordered hard shell tacos which menu said they were 4.99 each. Ordered a side of rice and a side of beans and they were 7.99 each which is way over priced. Received the bill and saw that they added an extra 1.00 per taco for beef increase that wasn't mentioned or posted on menu. Also if you pay with credit card they charge you an extra 3%. Food was decent Mexican food but way overpriced. read more

Let me start with the disclaimer that I'll still come back given there are so few food options in Lone Pine. This review is to serve as a heads up to adjust your expectations if you're in town during a busy time. The food was maybe 2.5 stars at best? It arrived prepared adequately, rice was cooked, but the veggies were likely cooked from frozen. It's the desert so I get that it's probably difficult to maintain fresh produce but this is a restaurant... if I wanted frozen food, I would have bought something from the market to microwave in my room. The wait. THE WAIT WAS HORRENDOUS. We were seated for over 15 minutes before getting water and the place was not busy at all. There were 2 servers with 3 tables were occupied at the time. I spotted 3 or 4 people in the kitchen. Our table had 5 people who ordered one entree each. It took over an hour to get our food!! The service was okay. The server was friendly but not attentive. We had empty water and empty chips. I'll just say: this is a place you can get food that is cooked. You won't get sick from it but you'll have to wait an unreasonable amount of time for your food. We were there for nearly 2 hours in total where over an hour was spent waiting for our orders to arrive. The employees were nice.... It's just that we needed it to be an early night and this didn't help. I don't believe people would appreciate waiting this long for service, drinks, and food. Back here again! More than a year ago, we were traveling through Lone Pine when we stopped for lunch at Bonanza Mexican Restaurant. We enjoyed our meals, so this time around, while visiting Death Valley National Park, we craved Mexican food and decided to stop here for a meal again. Bonanza is a family-owned restaurant, and the people serving the customers are amicable. When we walked in this time, two young ladies were attending the floor, and they were both very welcoming and friendly. When it came to ordering our dinner, we could not remember what we had ordered the last time we were here, so we settled for Carne Asada, Fajitas de Cameron, and the Cobb Salad. Then I got curious and dug out some photos from that trip. To my surprise, we all had ordered the same exact dishes and had sat at the same table! :- ) Dad and I enjoyed a cold beer each while waiting for the food, as we usually do. My mom loved her Fajitas de Cameron, and I loved my salad. My Dad enjoyed his Carne Asada but thought the meat was chewy. I tried a piece, and it was tasty. It was tough because the beef was from a grass-fed/free-range cow. Bonanza Mexican Restaurant is an excellent place to eat a filling meal if you are in Lone Pine. 5 stars for food and service! We had dinner here recently after completing the High Sierra Trail (75 mile backpacking trip finished with summit of Whitney)! Needless to say we were hungry! Bonanza fit the bill for a nice, no-frills lunch during our camping trip to Alabama Hills. It offers a full section of vegetarian menu items (yay!), complimentary chips and salsa, and a beer & wine selection (although no margaritas). The good-- My husband and I both ordered a beer and it was served with a ice cold mug. The salsa was fresh and tasty, and the chips were hot and crispy. The average-- My Huevos Rancheros left something to be desired. A little flavor lacking. And the Ranchero sauce was more like Pico de Gallo, not a smooth salsa. The Ehh-- Service was pleasant, if a little slow. It would have been nice to be offered another beer. It was a hot day, and trust me, we needed it! Irene was a sensational server today. The beef wet burrito with mole sauce was mouth watering. The chips with home made salsa were crisp and incredible. Wonderful clean bathroom and always a great stop. The frosted beer mugs are a perfect treat for a travelling Aussie! We missed seeing Rachel, another spectacular server! read more

Not many may be able to relate but for me personally the food reminded me of when I used to visit my grandparents. grandpa would grill up some fajitas on the flat grill and grandma made her creamy beans and fluffy rice. First, it's clean and comfortable. We were greeted right away, seated, given menus and homemade salsa and chips. We dine here when we want to have really good Mexican food. I ordered the tilapia tacos. Those tacos are my new favorite. Packed with flavor! The refried beans are absolutely delicious. I ask for no rice every time so I get more beans. You can't go wrong with a wet burrito, my hubby's favorite. I love the chimichangas too. Your food is cooked in the kitchen. It is not frozen. Oh their chicken taco soup is very tasty too. Driving through, we chose to stop at this Mexican restaurant in Lone Pine to grab a quick lunch on our way back home to Reno. We were seated rather quickly although the server wasn't exceptionally friendly. She took our orders and got the job done, but there wasn't really anything personable about her.. The food was alright, the salsa was a bit watering although it had good flavor and the enchilada sauce tasted more like bbq sauce than a traditional enchilada sauce. The tamale I got was a bit dry, but the meat had good flavor. Overall, I guess the food was passable if there isn't really a better option, but the prices were extremely high for the portion sizes and I wouldn't order the enchilada again for sure. read more

If you stop here the advice I would give is to make sure you tell them you enjoy spiced food (unless you don't) and ask them to make sure the order is well seasoned. Which does not have to be mouth burning hot. We did'nt. The breakfast burrito and Huevos a la Ranchera were pretty tasteless, as was the salsa provided with the chips. I was warned the Huevos a la Mexicana would be spicy; it was the sole dish enjoyed at the table...but in reality it was tame, but it did have flavor. Coffee was just ok. Kind of a shame, service was good and there are numerous vegetarian (not vegan) options. read more

We wanted to order Mexican food from a local taco truck known as (Castro's Tacos) but they were closed so this was our second option. We drove to the restaurant and ordered there. They told us that our food would be ready in 30 minutes so we ordered and went shopping while we waited. You can eat inside if you would like to. We saw one person sitting inside. We ordered 8 beef tacos, espinich enchilada, and shrimp quesadilla. They gave us a bag of chips and salsa as well. It cost us $68.32 for our dinner. The food tasted alright. Stopped here on our Camping stay - located on Main Street in the small town of Lone Pine, it didn't have much to look at, but the service was very friendly and the California Burrito hit the spot nicely! It's basically a carne asada burrito with French fries and yummy guacamole. Very delicious! Loved how the carne asada was crispy and so were the fries, adding to such a pleasant texture that left me satisfied. Washing it down with a Jaritos Pineapple Soda made it just right leaving me satisfied and very happy :) Would come again! read more

Service was truly amazing! we loved the bubbly environment but the food was terrible to say the least. The beans & chicken were SO salty. The beef and chicken was hard to chew because of how dry it was. They also didn't really specify how the chicken came (it was shredded chicken and they didn't say so, we thought it would be cut chicken breast) The food had little to no flavor. we felt bad leaving the food but it really wasn't enjoyable. All the sauces tasted like they came from a can.:( we've been on a road trip from San Diego for 3 days with a family of 12 and it was the priciest restaurant we've been to on our trip . The price really does did not line up with the food. Wouldn't be back again :( read more
