I heard the hype surrounding Bonito Michoacán having the best authentic tacos in KC and I had to make the drive out. Located inside a small market, there are a plethora of food options to make your mouth water. We ordered the tacos and a tamale. We both got 3 al pastor tacos (very filling) and they'll ask you if you want cilantro and onion on it as well. The line was long when we got in but went through very quickly. They had several sauce options that you add yourself. I added both of the hot options and they were the perfect amount of spice for me, but for those who aren't used to spice as much would probably find it a little too spicy (my boyfriend was struggling a little bit). Lots of great flavor in the tacos itself and the sauces as well. The tamale was as authentic as it gets too! I have been searching for some real tacos in the KC area and hadn't been able to find anything until now. I used to love this place. I walked in today and walked out after seeing the guy behind the taco counter wearing his mask on his chin- well below his nose and mouth. This guy serves hot food and talks to the customers. There was also a customer behind me who wouldn't back up six feet when I asked him politely to adhere to the distance stickers on the floor. I've eaten a lot of street tacos in Kansas City and Bonito Michoacan gets my vote for second best tacos in the Greater Kansas City metropolitan area. My #1 choice? Bonito Michoacan on Minnesota Avenue in KCK. No surprise. What I was surprised at was this location in the heart of Olathe pretty much captures the original KCK venue in every possible way. It's a world class stop for simply prepared foods, part sensory overload with the crowds that come. I have this theory that to make really great tacos you need to have two things: 1) fantastic ingredients, and 2) you have to be making a LOT of them so that the freshness is always there. You also must have good onions, fresh cilantro and juicy limes, and a well stocked condiment bar helps. All present here. At 2:00 today the place is absolutely jammed with folks standing in line to get their goodness at the dining counter. Tacos are flying off the line like crows in Alfred Hitchcock's movie "Birds." Me, in my finest 2nd grade Spanish: "Tres tacos por favor. Carnitas, Pastor y Lingua." The nice Hispanic lady waiting on me, slightly amused: "You want onions and cilantro?" Me: "Si, por favor." "Something to drink?" "Jarritos" Juicy, luscious, a rush of the protein from the meats mingling with the citrus of the lime, the burn from the onions and sauces, the soft corn tortillas perfectly warmed wrapping it all into one sensual food porn experience. This is damn serious food. The ultimate meal for around 7 dollars. Leaving, I notice a Taco Bell across the other side of the parking lot. I will never go anywhere else for Mexican food in KC after today. It was our first experience at this little gem located in a Mexican grocery store and we will definitely be back. Since I don't eat meat, I got my tacos with rice and beans sprinkled with onions and cilantro. My husband got three different tacos: pork, chicken, and steak. We had fun with the toppings bar. Everything was delicious and seemed very authentic. We loved how they didn't hold back on the spice level! There were also different options other than tacos and you can definitely customise your meal to your preference. Everything was reasonably priced. The line moved quickly, which was a good thing because all the delicious smells were making us hungry. Afterwards, we had fun walking around the store looking at all the great things on offer. Lots of different cuts of meat, hot sauce, spices, fresh produce, and an incredible bakery. Can't wait to go back! read more

Discovered this nice little gem when we checked it out at the KCK location and was ecstatic to hear that there is a location in Olathe. This place opened less than a year ago and unlike the KCK location, it's a lot cleaner and has a larger dining space. So this place is part grocery store/part restaurant/part bakery. What's not to like about that combo?? I come here for the tacos as they have the best Mexican street tacos in the city. What I usually order: -Lengua (season braised beef tongue) - MY FAVORITE! it's sitting in the marinade, so the meat is SUPER tendor. Don't worry, they'll drain all the excess juice so your taco doesn't get soggy. -Pastor (seasoned marinated pork with pineapple and onions) - this has got to be the customer favorite because it's always out! They continuously make new batches but expect to wait 10 minutes or so... the flavoring in this taco is delicious and the pineapple gives it a slightly sweet taste that isn't overbearing -Asada (grilled season beef steak) - if you don't feel like venturing out into the foreign cuts of meat.. this then you'll like this one. The beef is tender, great seasoning and chopped pretty fine - perfect for a taco. Also, there's a little cart that has several different sauces to use on your dish, taco, burrito, etc. Try that green sauce. It's a creamy-like texture, a sauce I was only able to find in Mexico until I came here. Fair warning.. it's SPICY but it's SOO good on a taco. LOVE THIS PLACE. So glad I don't have to venture all the way into the streets of KCK to get good mexican tacos. SCORE! One more thing... as many other reviewers have mentioned... Tuesdays AND Fridays are $1 tacos. I have been here A LOT since my first review. It is almost a weekly visit. With that I have taken time to experience more of the store. I have also tried some other options at the "deli". You won't go wrong with the tacos, but give the other options a try. The beans and rice on the platters are a notch above typical. I actually really enjoy the beans. The quesadillas are super yummy. Tamales yummy. Just everything I have tried makes me want to camp out and eat all day. The store has some great options to shop for also. The pastries are amazing and the prices can't be beat. I am a huge fan of the fresh chicharrones and usually grab a pound when I am there. They have the small crunchie pieces or you can buy a giant piece that is more like you would find prepackaged in stores. You will find your staple Hispanic items throughout the store and a nice, but small selection of produce. Don't miss the little cooler over by the eating area. There are cakes and such that are also awesome. Thanks to the ROTD, I think I need to make a trip for some food! read more

Well it seems I'm into taqueria's. I really like Super Mercado on Harrison and Dennis in Olathe. This is a little Mexican grocery with a meat department and small restaurant. I love the tacos! Well Bonito Michoacan is to Super Mercado as a mom and pop grocer is to Hy Vee. One in small and one is BIG! Bonito Michoacan has a nice bakery section or should I say wall of display cases with many baked goods I've never seen. On the oposite side is the restaurant. You line up near the coolers of bottled drinks, Coke from Mexico as well as more drinks I've seen but never tried. Then you order in like and your food is prepared as you go down the line to the register. The line moves fast so be ready! I've tried several taco options, all are good. Corn tortillas heated on the flattop and then filled with your choice of meat, onion and cilantro. Condiment bar is nearby. I opted to add a plate of beans and rice which are wonderful. I could go for just the beans and rice! Price is great too. I think the eat in special is $1/each taco and $1.99 for rice and beans. Hard to beat. I enjoy Bonito Michoacan but give the edge to Super Mercado as it is a bit slower pace and I find the tacos are a bit more flavorful. I will visit both often, I can't help myself. read more

Nice place to get some good eats. Its crowded and noisy, but has a long line every time I go in there. In the world of super good food the line won't lie to you. It is actually in side a grocery store, or is the grocery store in the restaurant? IDK... My most favorite place in the city for Tacos!!! I always get Carne Asada. I am committed to my favorites. Carne Asada is never on sale on Taco Tuesday or Taco Friday but if you are feeling adventurous and want to taste different tacos, it's best to go on Tuesday or Friday. I don't mind paying full price for what I prefer. I've never ordered a "Meal" however I have lots of family who like other items on their menu as well, I could only tell you about the tacos. Their Salsa verde (green salsa) is sorta like guacamole salsa, it's got just the right amount of spicy. The red sauce will deter the taste of the taco if you don't like spicy. The rice is the best mexican rice I've ever eaten! My 5 year old ONLY ever wants the rice when we come here. This location also has the extensive Mexican pastry shelf... don't forget to stop and get some strawberry filled churros on your way out!!! We usually order everything À la cart, so it can end up being pricey but it's definitely a treat! read more

This place is a hidden gem. It's tucked inside the Mexican grocery store off 11th and Minnesota Ave. Well worth the drive and wait. The lines are going to be especially long on Friday's and Tuesday's ($1 taco days), but the lines move fairly quickly and it's well staffed. I highly recommend their homemade pork tamales. Very delicious. The tamales are more narrow than they are wide, so I recommend ordering more than one (4 left me satisfied). Now if you're feeling adventurous and want to try something out of your comfort zone, I recommend trying the Buche (pork stomach) and the Chicharron (pork rinds/feet) tacos. The quality for the price is unbeatable and these are authentic Mexican/Latin dishes -- haven't found a place that has come close to replicating these dishes. If you're coming here, be sure to take advantage of that. The variety of meats they offer is extensive, as my above list shows you, and I enjoy that they offer Mexican/Latino inspired drinks like Jarritos soda (must try), Lift soda, Top Sabores and classic Coke in the bottles (old school and how they serve it in Mexico). read more

I've only had the tacos, and I've only been here on the $1 taco days (Tuesday/Friday). I always get the al pastor and carne asada. The tacos are amazing. Served on corn tortillas, you get your choice of a meat, and then onion/cilantro. They also have a salsa bar with a variety of salsa choices. If you decide to come, on a $1 taco day, be prepared for a line. Also, don't be confused when you want to sample these delicious street tacos. Being a recent transplant from Colorado I needed some real Mexican food. I craved real tacos, the kind that a real Mercado can give. As others have said, the Olathe Bonita is much much cleaner than the KCK location. As this review is being written, Bonita is in the process of building a sister restaurant next door in Olathe called Machos. Bonita is basically a scaled downed grocery store focusing on Latin-American and authentic products. There are aisles, meat dept, bakery, cooler, and a freezer section. The bakery cabinet is quite impressive. The prices are very reasonable on the bakery/pastry items. Some of the pastries are HUGE!. Small but well stocked produce section. Huge selection of imported drinks from Mexico in the cooler section. The hot food counter is really what most people come to Bonita for. Let me start off by saying this is gritty Mexican homeland type food. This is where I personally have a small issue with Bonita and others like them; The meats are basically the entire cut. I'm talking everything besides the bone. For instance, most of the meats at Bonita for the burritos, tacos, Menudo, etc consist of: 1)Skin 2)Cartilage 3)Fat 4)Connective Tissues 5)Membranes 6)Muscles 7)White & Dark meat 8) NO bones thus far. Some people love this stuff. I'm sure if I was a canine, I'd be in food heaven. But again, I personally don't like the texture or possible benefits of eating the entire cut of meat sans the bone. Your jaws will get a workout because no matter how much you chew, the meat refuses to be broken down. That's just me. When you do pick through all the other pieces of the animal and simply eat the meat, it's quite flavorful and good. I've had a lot of the items on the menu and mostly everything is delicious if you can get past certain aspects of the meat. Asada (steak) wonderful flavor but a little tough and chewy. The tortilla's, rice, beans, and menudo is where Bonita outshines so many others. Including Mi Ranchitos Mercado market up the street. The homemade corn taco tortillas are to die for at Bonita. Some of the best in KC Metro area. Rice and beans are delicious. They also have the large imported Cokes that are rare to find. I think they're close to 20 ounces in a glass bottle. Not the usual 12-14 oz variety. Prices are dirt cheap on the food. I never spend more than $6 on tons of food. Again, not a terrible place by any means. Big big loyal following with Bonita. Always super busy. I just prefer my cuts of meat to include white meat and nothing else. Therefore, I'll stick with Mi Ranchito's Taqueria or Cancun Fresh Fiesta in Westport. But, I will definitely return and highly recommend Bonita for those that enjoy this type of food. read more

Menu can be kind of confusing, but the lack of gloss makes the place more authentic. Go early if you want to take advantage of Taco Tuesday deals, as the lines can get long. read more

(I'm sure I misspelled that) Those street tacos are my favorite. They have tons of cilantro (with & without onions) And they'll pack them 6 at a time. This establishment looks better than the Bonito on Minnesota ave. Food was decent again not as good as the other establishment. Service is worse. Normally the same person taking the order prepares the food. Well I order food to eat in and to take out. Three different people had a hand in preparing the food which equated to finding out miles away at home that the take out order was wrong. Tacos, carnitas, asada, pastor, and barbacoa. It is delightful to have an authentic Mexican market and cafeteria line in the suburbs. This place has wonderful tacos and a wide selection of meat (I got lengua and tripa) and a slew of other dishes, including a nice menudo, lamb caldo, whole fried fish, horchata, and much much more. We were the only gringos dining in the store, and the line was long the whole time we were there. The sauces are varied with a few very spicy options, nice. Really good authentic street tacos. This is my go to if I want to satisfy my authentic Mexican cravings. They have a wide open serving area for dine in where you can get your pico de Gallo and pickled onions for your tacos de asada. OH, let's not forget the unlimited limes you get... the best.
