I have had their asada tacos, and carnitas torta and tamales. Torta was pretty good. The asada tacos were also pretty good. Some days they are better than others. I am not really a fan of their salsa. It tastes like they put masa in it, pretty sure they do because of the color of the salsa. It isn't bad... but not something I really want on my street tacos. Would probably taste bomb over tamales if you wanted extra flavor and heat. The tamales also were pretty good. Nothing really stood out to me as over the top. But they are decent. Not bad. Taco Tuesdays serve up $1 tacos, but I ended up getting four, which cost me more because I bought carne adobada was made from lamb, and birria, both which cost a bit more. The birria was good. They have a decent salsa bar, with a red salsa that's slightly fermented. I asked about this, but got no real information. But it's unique and quite good. The tamales are very light on meat, but the masa is savory, and not terribly dense. The meats seem to have bits of bones in it. Yesterday's four tacos yielded three pieces of bone. I would recommend to those eating to watch out for them. They also have hot tortillas for sale in a cooler, at the front of the store. What took me so long to visit this place?! It's a great grocery store with a lot of imported items. The produce looked pretty good and very reasonably priced. I only needed limes so I got 7 for $1. Oh the bakery is so tempting, the fresh, sweet aroma will draw you in. I'd had a few of the treats and enjoyed them. One challenge is that they aren't descriptions. So it's a bit of a guessing game, however I haven't been disappointed. You can ask an employee, but they may not speak much english. They have a good size meat market, both raw and cooked. We got some freshly ground chorizo. It's about $1 more/lb but it's doesn't have all the preservatives in it. Some of their raw meat is also pre seasoned. If you go in, wether you're hungry or not, you should go try a taco. Seriously, even as a mid morning or afternoon snack. You won't be sorry. They have several meat options, again not well labeled with descriptions. This is where it would be great to bring in a friend who knows the food and/or language. I like the tacos al pastor, or with chorizo or carnitas (kinda fatty here). Then get some refried beans, the flavor is terrific. You can also get a pound or two of meat and beans to go with some fresh tortillas. We do this for dinner on occasion. They also sell beer here, yes in the grocery store! I think it's because they are attached to a restaurant so they can do it...not totally sure. But they have some imported beer and domestic. It's really convenient. If you're in the area and you like authentic food, you've got to come check this place out. read more

Bonito Michoacan is a place where Anthony Bordain would go to for authentic tacos and a beer. This unique place is situated inside a Mexican super market with lots of cultural atmosphere. It might potentially become the Oklahoma Joe's of the street taco world. I got here on a Friday evening to find a long line of people, anxiously waiting for their turn to get some tacos. There's a nice meat selection, which includes everything from beef, chorizo, to cow tongue. I ordered 20 tacos and the price is only $20, which I thought a dollar taco cannot be great (Tuesdays and Fridays special). I was wrong about the quality. This place got the best damn tacos on the Kansas side. The steak is my favorite, so much flavor and tons of salsa selection. After dinner, I walked to the back to grab 1lb of crackling for a snack. Only $5.99/lb for fresh crackling. Crackling is pretty light, so 1lb is a lot of freaking cracklings. Overall, I'm very happy to find this place and will return for more. What cracks me up is there's a Taco Bell in front of this place and cars were lined up in the drive through. This is the place, now if u are looking for a luxurious Mexican restaurant this is not ur place. Bonito Michoacan is a Mexican Market/Meat Market foremost. In the same building they have a cafeteria style restaurant that's inside the market. They have about ten old style booth tables and a mini bar for seating. Nothing fancy but nice and clean. Now to the good part, they have a wide selection of meats for ur tacos or plates. The meats include tongue,asada,chicharron,barbacoa,birria,buche and al pastor. I had four tacos, and they were out of this world. My favorite was Buche, Al Pastor, and tongue. With the winner being Tongue for sure!! They also have Chile rellenos and tamales, which I will try next time. Quite frankly this is a gem hidden around a nice community. Maybe I didn't read the information I found on the web about Bonito Michoacan carefully enough, but as I walked hesitantly into the grocery store/bakery on Santa Fe in Olathe, I was a little surprised to see that about 1/5 of the total square footage of the store was devoted to a counter-order restaurant with abundant small-booth seating. Gringos were in short supply here, which I found to be a good sign that I was going to get authentic Mexican food vs. the Tex-Mex that we see so often in this country. I'm happy to report that everything I saw seemed to be the real deal. Since moving to the Chicago area several years ago, my eyes were opened in terms of what real Mexican food tasted like, and that's not a knock on the joints on Southwest Blvd, which I enjoy greatly when I'm in town. I was a little disappointed that my first choice was unavailable (a chalupa plate). Instead I opted for four tacos (soft on corn tortillas) -- two carne asada and two pollo desebrado. Each of the varieties was tasty, though the beef was drier than what I'd prefer. Table salsas included a tasty salsa verde and a pretty spicy red sauce. I'll definitely come back the next time I'm in town. The tacos at $1.50 a shot offer a great value for the real thing. read more

A fantastic supermercado with a solid produce department, an impressive meat counter, a great bakery and phenomenal cafeteria style mexican fare. They do street style tacos for $1 each on Tuesday/Friday and you'll typically find a line of roughly 100 people in there for lunch on those days (I've seen the line wrap the entire perimeter of the store before). They'll get you through the line in about 15 minutes and you'll have to fight for a seat on the busier days but it's still totally worth it! read more

I made it back here this week after a class on the new JoCo data app for county maps and records (it's very cool, and will be useful, anybody on yelp who does stuff related to real estate should check it out). I had a better exp with the dining area this time, although there are still no signs, and the menu doesn't really tell you what is available. But I got three tacos easily, one carne asada, one tripas, one barbacoa. They were all delicious. At 3:00pm there was a rather long line at the counter, which should tell you something. The line was there the whole time I ate my lunch, in fact I think it was even longer when I left and they move fast. I am on record here about my deep-down love of tripe tacos (they are actually chitlin). The Bonito Michoacan version I had was fried little elbows of the tripas, which were then braised or sauteed with onions. So not crispy, but Oh god, so good. The carne asada was excellent as well, not extremely tough and well seasoned, with a nice seared flavor. The barbacoa (it's cabeza, beef head) was not as pulpy as last time, and delicious as well. They have a little refrigerated cart bar with 6 or 7 salsas, pico de gallo, and escabeche jalapenos. I tried a couple, and they were very good, a mild green tomatillo, very tart, and a very-hot and chile bitter red sauce. The pickled jalapeno I ate as a relish was also tasty, rather crispy, in a sweetish vinegar. I don't think they are canned - if they are, I want to know the brand, but I think they must make them. The tacos are good-sized, and are made with two soft, fresh tasting corn tortillas. They will put onion and cilantro on if you tell them to. Three is a lot of food, I ended up with tortillas left over. read more

The best Tacos al Pastor in the Midwest !!! Growing up in Mexico made me a very picky Mex. food eater. Bonito Michoacan is hands down, the most authentic taqueria you will find in the entire Midwest. The owner is a self-made restauranteur from Michoacan Mexico and he has 5 taquerias in Houston and 2 in Kansas, he certainly knows his tacos!! This place is a grocery store/bakery/taqueria. From the taco meat variety, to the zillion variety of sodas and beer cooled in good old ice in an aluminum tub, to the taqueros (people making the tacos), the atmosphere is as authentic as it gets! They offer a wide variety of taco meats such as carne asada, tongue, cheek, chorizo with cactus, discada, and the best of all Pastor which is marinated pork cooked in a gyro type of rotating stick. They will ask you for your choice of meat and ask whether you want cilantro and minced raw onions as toppings. You will then go to the salsa bar where they have a choice of about 6 salsas, limes and radishes. If you prefer a more complete meal you can choose a platter asking for the "special of the day" with rice and beans. They also offer gorditas but they are not very good. Their flautas are simply to die for, try them the next time you go. This is an informal, stand in line type of place. They have enough tables to accommodate a large lunch crowd. So if you're feeling like experiencing a south of the border taco adventure, this is the place. Tuesdays: Tacos are a dollar but it gets so packed that if you have little time for lunch, you may not get to enjoy your taqueria experience as much. However, if you want the true taco stand experience and you have about an hour for lunch, go ahead and stand in line and hear people talk of all the deliciousness they will try this time around. I remember doing the same as a young law intern in Mexico and loved watching how all of the attorneys, judges and other executives would snub all the fine restaurants around the courthouse and just stand in line at a taco stand waiting to get their lunch tacos knowing that the wait was well worth it. The place is very clean. In fact, it is cleaner and better kept that the Bonito Michoacan in Kansas City, Kansas, so no health concerns here. O! M! G! I can't get over how good these tacos are. Asada, barbacoa, and carnitas were all great. The borrego (lamb) was absolutely heavenly. My kid loaded up on those. The salsa bar had both kinds of green salsa: the clearer tomatillo kind and the creamy avocado-y aguacate. Yum. The only downside to the trip is that you can't garnish your own onions and cilantro. I could've been good with doubling up on the cilantro. The kid loves borrego soup, so we can't wait to go back to try theirs. Hooray for Olathe. Oh now this is just as cool as it gets. I'm completely in love with this Mexican Grocery store/cafe. We came for dinner, and ate well. FYI, tacos are $1 on Tuesday. ONE DOLLAR. We hopped into line after staring at the menu for way too long. It's not a long menu, but there are a lot of different options. Build a burrito or get a combo plate? Or maybe tacos? Spicy meats, warm tortillas, and really good beans washed down with real mexican cokes. The dining area is very simple, just linoleum booths, but kept clean. There's a salsa/topping bar for doctoring up your entrees. The green salsa on the table is really good, tangy with tomatillos. The red from the table is smokey and spicy with chipotles. After eating we wandered the aisles for a few minutes and pick up some Mexican cookies and chips. We also grabbed some fresh produce -- nopales, tomatillos and avacados -- and a pound of the house-made chorizo. When we got home the kid was back for the weekend from KU, he asked me if I had been shopping in Mexico! I came here with coworkers for lunch. The lines are long! Come early, especially Tuesdays and Fridays! I had several tacos with different meats in each one. They were outstanding! If you are not into spicy food, try it first without the cart sauces. I tried it with the cart sauces, and it was a little spicy, but I got through it. Still very good! I went here because I read about their Taco Tuesday deal with $1 tacos. Regular prices are "only" $1.49 so they're still affordable on other days too. We arrived about 11:45 and the line was at the back of the store. That wasn't a big deal because I already read about the lines and how it was totally worth the wait. We ordered 10 tacos between the three of us and along with 3 drinks the total was under $20. Asada - delicious! Tender and flavorful but not overpowering. Probably my favorite. Pastor - really good but not the absolute best I've had. I'd definitely order them again but they weren't as good as the asada. Barbacoa - really good tender shredded beef. Great flavor and spice. My family ordered carnitas and said their tacos were really good as well. The orange sauce is their hot. It is pretty spicy but has great flavor. My wife tried the mild and said it was really good too. We finished lunch off with a flan and piece of tres leches from the grocery store. Both were sweet and delicious. These are just like the ones in Baja California across the border. It's located in a market so not like the taco bars in Ensenada but we appreciate good food in a food court setting anytime! Sometimes I crave their carnitas taco meal too. A big food container with tons of meat and onions and cilantro, salsa (watch out they're spicy!) a bag of tortillas for under $20 for a make your own taco party at home. Feeds a family of four a hearty meal (I also like to buy one more bag of tortillas on my way out because what they give is not quite enough for all the meat).
