The lady running the front is so nice and extremely welcoming. The porridges are so flavorful. I honestly do recommend their seaweed porridges than what I got of chicken and abalone. And the bowls are huge. I thought they will be more like the jook you get at a lot of Cantonese spots. But these were quite a bit larger. Def worth the price and had leftovers to take home Definitely will come again
The ultimate comfort food- Juk, congee, porridge. Different names with slightly different twists, it's a food that transcends across cultures, but delivers the same warmth and deliciousness in every form. Although on the pricier side (about $20 per bowl) the quality of this juk is high. It's silky, delicious, and addicting. I crave it way too much. For such a simple dish, Bonjuk has quite the hold on me. I just wish it was a little more affordable but clearly I just need to learn how to make juk on this level. The bon chon sides are a perfect topper too. Especially love the shredded pork. One criticism is we weren't crazy about the kimchi pancake. It wasn't crispy enough and was bland as well. We will have to try the cheese cutlet next time.
Juk, or congee (originally a Tamil word), is not often found on restaurant menus. While certainly a staple of Korean cooking, juk's simplicity as a porridge predisposes the dish towards home kitchens. Bonjuk, however, has found a way to turn juk into a destination dish by playing up its potential medicinal qualities - it is indeed the kind of dish you would want to eat to recover from a cold. The atmosphere is somewhere between temple-like and a doctor's office, with a solemn volume level adopted by customers and the temperature turned up to a level to put you to sleep. But all that being said, this is the best juk or rice porridge of any culture that you will eat anywhere in New York. There is a deep flavor of mushrooms in some of the vegetarian varieties, and the patjuk, a red bean congee eaten to ward off evil spirits at the time of the winter solstice, has an indescribable heartiness.
Loved this joint in Korea, and I loved it just as much here. Right when we came, there was a kind lady tending to us. She was the best in exemplifying a fast chill service. I was wary of the portion size behind the seafood options here, so I got the Beef and Mushroom congee. It was so flavorful! The banchan accompanied our every bite that we needed second helpings. The Cheese Katsu was also phenomenal. The cheese is a fantastic addition to the traditional dish. Lastly, the Pumpkin smoothie was spectacular. It was expensive, but I trust fresh ingredients were used in producing such a natural sweet taste. Prices are expensive, but this store is such a necessity during under the weather days!
The Cheese Katsu had a great cheese pull. The cheese didn't feel too thick or heavy. It didn't feel like there was a lot of pork, but just three pieces in, I started getting satisfied. I also tried the Sweet Pumpkin Porridge, which wasn't too sweet or too heavy. The rice cakes were chewy. On a Christmas Eve afternoon, the restaurant was quiet, perfect for a comforting meal. The staff was very kind.
Bonjuk serves traditional Korean rice porridge / congee. It's healthy, filling, and delicious. For those who aren't a fan of congee, they also serve bibimbap, hot stone bibimbap, and katsu of various kinds. Bonjuk is clean and service is also very friendly. Though if you come in the off-hours, the restaurant is uncomfortably quiet. We ordered the chicken congee and hot stone spicy seafood bibimbap with an extra egg. The chicken congee was fine and there was a minor issue with the bibimbap. The rice wasn't toasted enough...at least not for a "hot stone". The other issue I had was the add-on egg for $2.50. The picture on the menu clearly depicts the egg as sunnyside up but I got a very overcooked over-hard eggs. I asked the server about it and she said sunnyside up is up they do it in Korean and they do over-hard here. Then I questioned her reasoning because the menu showed sunnyside up and even their TV screen shows my dish with sunnyside-up. I was expecting the server to grant my request to ask the kitchen to re-make my eggs properly or at the very least remove the egg from the bill...she did neither. It may sound a bit extreme...ranting about an egg...but a bibimbap without a gooey egg just seems incomplete. I may still come again but Bonjuk may not be my first choice.
It was a Friday night at 8PM, my boyfriend wanted to go to the restaurant two buildings down the block but they had an hour wait time. He suggested that we should order to go, but I felt sitting down and eating at the restaurant would create a more meaningful experience with the food. We didn't want to wait, so we decided we were going to go to a different restaurant. As we were heading to the direction of his car, we spotted Bonjuk, a restaurant that we haven't tried before. Without any research or much thinking, we spontaneously decided this was the restaurant that we were going to try tonight, and didn't know what to expect. As we walked in, the lady at the front greeted us and sat us down. She was very friendly, and appeared to have a calm presence. As we navigated through the menu, the first few pages contained different kinds of porridges, ranging from savory to sweet. There were so many different options when it came to porridges, but since I made homemade congee the night before, I decided not to order the porridge. I just finished with a gym workout, so I wanted a high protein post-workout dinner meal. I was deciding between the tuna & kimchi hot stone bibimbab and the chicken bulgogi with rice. I wanted to have a balanced meal, so I ordered an avocado salad as a side for both of us. On the other hand, my boyfriend was deciding between the cheese donkatsu, the curry katsu, and the chicken bulgogi with rice. The picture of the cheese donkatsu poster on the wall caught his eyes. He thought the portion size would be small and not filling for the price, which was later proven wrong as I saw a photo in the review section of the cheese donkatsu. In the end, he ordered the same thing as I did. The food came out in a timely manner. The chicken bulgogi with rice came with three sides: kimchi, pickled yellow radish, and miso soup. The presentation of the avocado salad surprised me. It looked artistic and creative with a balance of greens, shredded carrots and cabbage, sliced avocado, and the perfect amount of dressing. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed the avocado salad. The chicken bulgogi had a mix of alittle sweetness and saltiness to its taste which compliments the plain white rice. Every bite creates a sense of happiness within me. On the other hand, my boyfriend's thought on the bulgogi chicken was okay. He said it was flavorful, but needed a bit more moisture for his liking. I personally didn't like the miso soup as much because it was too salty for my liking. Overall, it was a great experience all because we decided to be spontaneous! I will definitely come back to try their wide variety of porridges as it is comforting especially during the colder seasons.

We came here for an early breakfast and there was only one lady working, she was very sweet and attentive. The ambiance is your traditional cozy Korean restaurant inside with clean facilities. We ordered two bowls of porridge to share between the 3 of us and it was more than enough. Each bowl comes with yummy banchan or sides to complement the main entree. All the ingredients taste super fresh and high quality. They also serve up fresh juices such as pumpkin which is very refreshing and healthy if you are craving something cold. I would highly recommend checking out Bonjuk as this is a pretty unique restaurant.
Was pleasantly surprised to see an expanded menu that included bibimbap and donkatsu. Every so often, I crave Korean juk and Bonjuk is always made with high quality ingredients. Some of our favorite porridge options are abalone, oyster and gamtae seaweed, beef with mushroom and crab. The spicy seafood hot stone bibimbap was a perfect marriage of vegetables and assorted seafood. The extra crispy rice bits were the highlight. I think takeout portions are smaller than the dine-in portions. My juk was huge!

I was so excited to hear that Bonjuk is selling Dujjonku, so I bought a 4-piece set to enjoy with my family. When I tried it, I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't overly sweet, and the crispy pistachio and kataifi texture was absolutely amazing. It was seriously so delicious! The first time, I was too busy eating to take any pictures, but today I made sure to take some and share them. I honestly think Dujjonku is the best at Bonjuk! I'm so happy that I can buy this special treat close to home. read more

The service was incredibly slow. It took about 30 minutes to get all of our food out. We saw other customers walk out because the wait was too long. I'm pretty patient though so it didn't bother me too much. Ambiance was pretty quiet In terms of the food, I would say it was pretty eh. I got the 물냉면, and to be honest, I've had it much better at many other places. All of the other food I've tried here has a been alright as well. Nothing tasted that flavorful, like it was missing something. If you are in Manhattan, I personally would not recommend coming here as there are better places closer. However, my family enjoy it, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. read more
Perfect for if you're feeling a little under the weather or when it's really cold out and would like some congee to warm the soul. I got the shrimp congee which was a little on the bland side but they had side dishes that helped with more flavor when I topped it off my spoonful of congee. The portion was huge! I definitely could not finish it. The staff are soooo nice. They are so welcoming and so cute when taking our order and always attentive in filling up our cup with tea! read more

Trying oyster porridge for the first time was a delightful adventure. The dish showcased a robust oyster flavor that was truly commendable, though I wished there a few more oysters in it. I just love oysters. The bibimbap was a pleasant surprise. You can taste each ingredient, and the way flavors come together is yummmm. Moreover, the customer service was very warm and welcoming. The food is always great here it's a cozy soup spot that I always enjoy eating. I usually have my favorite chicken porridge But this time I had their Katsu curry not knowing this was on the menu before so deff wanted to try something new. The curry was so good and didn't disappoint the Katsu was so crispy and juicy Also got a hot pumpkin porridge on the side can't forget that so good for the super cold days!! Bonjuk serves clean comfort food for when you feel sick, hungover, tired... It's one of very few Asian restaurants that don't make me feel physically horrible for hours after, maybe they don't put MSG, it's very light and feels like home cooking. They put soothing classical music and the place is spotless. I came in feeling a bit under the weather and felt definitely much better after our meal. The star missing is because it's definitely quite overpriced. We got their special porridge which is 40$, and it definitely was not worth that. Only tiny bites of abalone, and the taste wasn't much to write home about. I'd suggest getting one of the cheaper porridges instead. With so many restaurants on Northern blvd that are much more bang for buck, this is where Bonjuk loses a bit to competitors. read more

Food: 4/5 Service: 2.5/5 Ambiance: 2.5/5 This is my go to restaurant if I ever feel sick and need some warming, soothing congee to feel better. After binging on too much Korean BBQ, I am a big fan of eating the right food the few days to help with illness. Bonjuk has saved me many times. Food: The Korean style congee is thicker and has more numerous versions than I have seen in Cantonese restaurants. I recommend getting the Octopus Kimchi for something with a little spicy, fermented tang. The Salmon or Tuna Congee is great if you want something lighter but still savory. They also have sweet dessert like congees such as pumpkin which is really good. I am smiling even as I write this review because I feel so warmed inside just thinking about the food. They have renovated not so long ago and now also include Bibimbap, both regular and also in a Stone Pot. There are also some Kastu dishes on their menu. I am glad they are expanding and giving some more options. I have the expectation that those dishes will be just as healthy as their congee, but if its your first time, just order the Congee. Worth a mention is also their Mung-bean blended cold drink. It can be a little sweeter than I expect sometimes, but it is a delicious cold accompaniment to the hot congee that you eat. Service is always polite, but depending on the day and server working, they either don't pay attention to you unless you go looking for them or they do the normal amount of work to come refill some of your water. Price wise, they do lean more expensive than your typical lunch and for dinner, it may not fill you up as much if you are looking for more food. However, they are really the only Korean Congee game in town. If you want authenticity and good Korean comfort food, Bonjuk is worth the visit. read more
I've been wanting to come here for the longest time and when my bf got his wisdom teeth removed... timing was perfect!! After this experience, I'm definitely adding this to my list when I don't feel well and need some juk. I got the samgae porridge (chicken) and my bf was debating between seafood combination or imitation crab. He went for seafood. When we got the food.. we instantly realized how huge the bowls were. I mean holy cow, portions are huge! I think 3 people sharing two would be perfect. The porridge comes with three sides/ toppings. I really liked them all, and paired well with the juk. Half way.. we were both pretty stuffed, BUT... my bf asked for more of one side dish and some how.. WE BOTH ENDED UP FINISHING OUR ENTIRE BOWL OF JUK. Ok, I'm not too surprised about my bf finishing it, but MEEE! I was amazed and was super stuffed idk how I did it. But it was that good, I just kept eating it, till it was gone. I can't wait to come back here and try their other flavors... and will probably actually save half so I don't feel like rolling on the floor afterwards haha! Prices are a littleeee high for juk, but the portion size is good and they back it up with quality too. read more

Abalone Porridge is not worth the price. There are mostly mushroom pieces and you can't even taste or see the abalone. Also it tastes like they put a lot of msg when it is supposed to be a "healthy food". I'm never getting it anymore. read more

Really enjoyed the porridge. Had the beef & vegetable with the pumpkin juice, which was more a smoothie in terms of consistency. The food felt like something you'd get at mom's so it's consistent with the ads/ other reviewers. I'd definitely order out on rainy day. read more

Place was okay, but had to knock this place down a few points for a wide variety of reasons. Came here in the middle of summer and immediately noticed a foul odor that enveloped the entire place. Was incredibly put off by the smell and as I looked around and gave a nod of approval in admiration of the decor here, was immediately put off again by the swarm of flies that seemed to have dominated the place. I'm not sure what happened, but part of me thinks they cook with a lot of seafood, and someone probably forgot, or hasn't been taking out the trash lately. Either way ignored it as I usually care more about the food, which turned out to be fairly average as well. Ordered the cheese tonkatsu which was enjoyable and done well, as well as the octopus congee which was done not so well. Octopus boiled for long periods of time becomes rubbery and hard to chew......not a great combo when boil with rice for a long time. Definitely a novel option since Korean congee is not something you usually see however I'll just stick to other congee spots from now on read more

Wow is it sad to say that this is the best meal I have had in NYC so far? The commute to here is a bit far for me (3 trains and a bus), but is really worth it. The samgae porridge was so good (chicken+vegetable) as the ingredient and cooking quality were high. Really need to try the abalone porridge next time I come. I got the pumpkin juice which tasted so good. This is where you go to get porridge to help you recover from eating unhealthy. I felt like coming into another world and leaving like I had went to a spa. The only issue here is that all this good quality comes at a price. My samgae porridge was $14.95 and the pumpkin juice was $6.95. Worth every penny as a casual treat. read more

The porridge is great here BUT........ Menu prices are not current in the Yelp pictures nor on the menus issued by the restaurant. Why would a restaurant still consciously supplying out-of-date menus? Many people noted that the porridge selection is expensive.....well compared to the menus seen on Yelp, as of at least today, expect to pay an additional +20% increase on prices. I bought a beef and mushroom, advertised as $11.95......we paid $15.19 (after tax)......that is not a subtle price increase. The portions for takeout I feel are significantly smaller than dining in, so I would recommend the latter if you're looking to satiate your cravings. Currently ridiculously overpriced for what you're getting, takeaway is certainly NOT a 2-person-sized portion :( POSITIVES: - well-packed - delicious, especially during colder weather - tastes very similar to the restaurant locations in Seoul, South Korea. Abalone porridge is a must when you visit any juk house, samgye porridge is worth a try too. Definitely worth visiting if you're treating yourself or if you're feeling ill. The restaurant really needs to be transparent with prices though :/ read more

Love this place! They made the best porridge- price is quite high but it's definitely worth it. I tried salmon and veggie, tuna and veggies both are super delicious. Also bulgogi and octopus and kimchi and octopus both are flavorful and yummy! Good Togo package and didn't spill or anything. I love their Togo container- it is totally reusable. Side dish are quite small though.. read more
