This location is smaller than many of them and it's sort of hidden in plain sight on 3rd Street so I kind of forget it's there but it's worth trying if you're at the Beach and want the same tasty BBQ and friendly service without heading in town. The small brisket platter came with a large portion of well smoked brisket with lots of flavor but wasn't too fatty or dry. It came with a piece of fresh Texas Toast and two sides. The collard greens tasted hot and fresh and I added just a bit of pepper sauce for a little extra kick. The side salad is solid as well and be sure and get some tea since it's as good as you'll find anyplace. This was the small platter and I was plenty full so I'd say get the small unless you're truly starving, maybe then consider the large one. There's a reason Bono's has been a Jacksonville icon for a long time and I'll be back here fore sure when I'm in town. read more

Best BBQ at the beaches, and exceptional service! This Bono's is located in the 3rd street plaza. There's a big parking lot with plenty of spaces. Inside, the store has booths to sit at, and TVs with sports on. When I came in the store, I was greeted right away by the staff who were very friendly. For COVID, there is plexiglass installed at the cash register. They also have paper menus for guests. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich with mac and cheese to go. The service was really quick, and the servers were very polite in providing us with all the bbq sauces, utensils, and extra items we needed. The pulled pork was amazing. The portions were huge and super satisfying. The pork itself was tender and delicious. You can add your preference of bbq sauce for extra yumminess. I had the regular bbq sauce. The bread on the San which was sweet, almost like a muted honey flavor which accented the pork really well. I also loved that the bread was thin, yet thick enough that it didn't fall apart from holding the meat. The Mac and cheese was amazing. A classic recipe, that is simply delicious. Overall, I had an excellent visit. The hospitality of the staff was overwhelmingly pleasant. Everyone had a positive personality and kind spirit. I will definitely be back for more! read more

Well, unfortunately, this was the second time under the new ownership and at this point, I am convinced and is confirmed that whoever is on the smoker or the pit does not know what the hell they're doing! For me and my two teenagers girl and a boy to pay over $70 I did tip $15 so came out to 85 but for the food to be absolutely horrible and in my opinion, the worst barbecue I've ever had it's a shame . I truly am saddened by this. This place was so good and at one time it was the best barbecue at the beach. In my opinion I barbecue food myself and have three smokers. Being as I was an awkward and nerdy kid, I was into cliched awkward and nerdy kid stuff like comic books and superheroes. Well, as I think about it, I'm still into comic books and superheroes. Whatever. Anyway, I remember as a kid being excited each week to watch the classic cartoon The Super Friends on Saturday mornings. It consisted of a team of super heroes, but obviously they all weren't alike. There were the really powerful ones like Superman and Wonder Woman, and then there were the ones that, well, weren't. Powerful, that is. Like Zan and Jayna. Who were Zan and Jayna you ask? They were the Wonder Twins! They each had powers. But, um, they weren't exactly Superman level powers. Zan had the ability to transform into different states of water. And so, each week, from what I remember, he always seemed to transform into a bucket of water. woo. oh look. a bucket of water. You know, in the barbecue world, there are certainly restaurants that are like Superman and Wonder Woman. Creating fantastic menus filled with succulent meats that dance on your palate and melt in your mouth. Mmmmmmmm dancing melting meats! And then there are the barbecue places that are more like the Wonder Twins. I mean, it's still barbecue. And it's still ok. But a bucket of water isn't exactly more powerful than a locomotive or is able to leap tall buildings in single bound. It's a bucket of water. Look. I like Bono's. For chain restaurant barbecue, it is better than most. So I come back to this Bono's in Jax Beach quite often. But is it the best barbecue you can get? Well, is Zan the best Super Friend to fight an evil space villain? Let's talk about the good stuff. The restaurant, while small, is clean and has that great BBQ smell. Of meats slowly cooking in a pit. The whole staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming. The owner, who seems to know everyone, takes time to work his way around the restaurant, sitting and chatting or at least checking in with customers to see how their meals are. I like that. I don't feel like I'm intruding or that I'm an outsider when I come to this Bono's. The food is good. For sides I really like the green beans, the collard greens and the cole slaw. The slaw is that right ratio of slaw to mayonnaise. I hate when cole slaw is too goopy with way too much mayo. This slaw strikes the right balance. As for meats I usually go with the chicken and the ribs. Sometimes the sausage or pulled pork. The pulled pork at times seems a bit mushy, but the flavor is good. I've tried the brisket a few times, but I find it to be a dry. So like i said, try the chicken and the ribs. The Bono sauces are good. The original mustard based is my favorite. It's been the same for a long time and it works well with the meats. And what's great is that the prices here are not outrageous. You know, sometimes that bucket of water was exactly what was needed to defeat the evil bad guy of the week. And sometimes you may just need just a good decent BBQ place that won't empty your wallet but will provide you with a nice place to eat with decent food. I'll eat to that! Went on Saturday for lunch. I was greeted when I came in & had Jasmin for my server. I ordered the 2 meat combo of Brisket & Sausage with Brunswick stew & baked beans for my sides. The brisket was moist and tender & the sausage was very flavorful. Jasmin was very friendly and checked on me often to make sure that my meal was great & that my iced tea was full. I was watching DDD last night and saw a BBQ joint with the juiciest, tender beef brisket. So I decided to go to my fav BBQ restaurant-Bono's and give their beef brisket a try. Having only had brisket one other time in my life, i was not sure what to expect. Well, I should have stuck to pulled pork. The brisket was so dry and leathery, it was barely edible. I doused it in bbq sauce hoping to help..no luck. I was surprised that Bono's would serve it -they had to know it was overcooked when they cut it. No juice. Not tender. Just plain awful. Service was good, pulled pork was good. But for $20 lunch, the brisket should have been the best, not the worst. read more

This Bono's has become our instant favorite location. The evening before Hurricane Dorian brushed the beaches, my wife and I took our golf cart out to see what our neighbors were doing. We saw the open light in the window of the restaurant and decided to pick up some food to last a few days after the storm. While their menu was understandably limited due to the storm they still had a decent selection. The manager, I assume, was very friendly and way too apologetic considering his circumstances. He was able to supply us with plenty of food and even gave us a free bottle of BBQ sauce as an apology for a smaller than usual selection. He didn't have to do that. He won us over and we will go there before the other options available. read more

Bono's has really good barbecue and delicious like homemade side dishes as well at very reasonable prices. You almost never have to wait to get in there. The waitresses are all very down-home friendly. The places are all very clean and very efficiently run. I especially like this place. Parking is easy and the prices are low. Their fried corn on the cob is the bomb. I've checked out Bono's locations all over town and find that most of them are very similar in their service and in the quality of their food. We love BBQ and Bono's is top of the list for Jax area BBQ restaurants. This location is close to my condo at the beach. It's in a newer strip plaza but parking is never a problem. I typically get take out and go back home to eat in the comfort of my own home. The food is always amazing. You'll smell the smoke from the BBQ from the parking lot to get your tastebuds going. There's sandwiches, platters, salads, ribs and family feast. Pork, turkey, brisket, sausage and chicken. One of my favorites is the sloppy pig which is a sandwich loaded with pulled pork and topped with coleslaw. I'm also a fan of the ribs and have had both the baby backs and St Louis style. Sides are all awesome, baked beans, Brunswick Stew, slaw, fries, corn on the cob, Mac and cheese, green beans and sweet potatoes. I'm also a fan of their salads which are hearty in size and topped with your choice of meats. Plenty of dressings to top it off. They also sell meat by the pound which is great for large groups and Bono's BBQ sauces are amazing whether you like it mild, sweet or spicy! If you're from Jacksonville you love your sweet tea and Bono's has what your looking for. This is a great chain and the food is always great and consistent. This Bono's happens to be within walking distance of my office and therefore, very convenient when your kinda hungry but not really sure what you want and therefore not very interested in venturing out to far from your current location. Plus, what southerner doesn't like BBQ, even if it is a chain restaurant? So yesterday was one of the aforementioned days where lunch time came and nothing in particular was shouting out to me. I walked in and headed to my usual seat up at the counter (not that I have my "own seat" her but more that I never sit at an actual table, especially when I'm alone) and proceeded to peruse the menu even though I always order the same thing....pulled pork. This time I got the small pp platter with fries and there special side of the day, potato salad. My meal was ready with in minutes. I love that you can watch the guys pull the meat out of he smoker as soon as you place your order and start slicing away. I saw my fries go in to the fryer and as soon as they were done my potato salad was added to the plate and I my lunch was served. I think this was my first time ever getting the potato salad here and I thought it was pretty good. I would order it again, which isn't always the case for those kind of sides. The pork was just as good as it always is. The fries were well fries so no complaints there. I ate my meal enjoyed watching the news and when finished said my goodbyes. But not for long because I know I'll always come back to Bono's BBQ again. read more

I have had good BBQ during my travels to Florida but this place def was not even close to OK. Brisket: just the thinnest of thin smoke rings. Tons of fat. Tasted and looked as if it had been sitting around for awhile. It wasn't quite dry but not very moist either. Ribs: better smoke ring and ok flavor. Membrane was left on and not cooked the proper way to ensure that it is tender. Instead you get a hard crisp layer that snaps when you bite through the rib meat.
