    Candy cane roll

Ate here for lunch and it was great. I couldn't believe how extensive their roll menu was, plus they had special rolls! Our server was very nice and came around often. I got the hot tea which comes with unlimited refills and she always came by to refill my cup. I ordered the tropical roll and it was very yummy. I also ordered the escolar sashimi, which was also fresh and good. I liked the tropical roll so much I ended up ordering another one. My friend ordered the candy cane roll and it was also delish - tons of different flavors going on! Highly recommend trying this place. I will definitely be back.

Found this place on Yelp for a birthday dinner, and it did not disappoint! We will certainly be back. We had miso soup, popcorn chicken, and three of the specialty rolls. These rolls were massive, fresh, and delicious. Service was very attentive and friendly which really makes this spot a standout.

The sushi is very filling, they serve big rolls! It is a small place, so reservations are recommended!!

Rolex at top, anniversary in the middle and Fatty Matty on the white plate. Fatty Matty is amazing

We really enjoyed Bonsai and highly recommend it. I have eaten at some others in Lake Mary, Dr. Phillips and downtown. Our server was kind and attentive. The sushi chef acknowledges you when you enter. This is our new to go place for date nights. My favorite roll is the Fatty Matty . Rolex is my 2nd choice and anniversary was 3rd. For 2 people who share, 2 rolls is enough

Sakura and Osaka rolls. Highly recommend

This is definitely a hidden gem in the area. We were leaving universal studios since the city walk was packed and came across this sushi restaurant. Plenty of parking because it was in a plaza and the staff was friendly and quickly seated us. Loved the little sushi decor in the restaurant. The food was great and I was surprised at their huge list of rolls available. We started with a birds nest as a cold appetizer and got some rolls as well. The fish was fresh and delicious. Loved that you can order extra sauces if needed but was great on its own. I would recommend everyone in the area to check them out. Now for large parties I would give them a call ahead since the space is homey, but not large. Overall a great experience.

My buddies and I absolutely love coming to Bonsai Sushi. Every single time we visit it delivers. The rolls are big and delicious. I love local spots like this. Every time I go I order the "Fatty Matty". The desert is their "Tempura Cheesecake". It is very rich and delicious. I absolutely recommend this place to anyone who loves sushi.

This sushi restaurant has been my family's go-to in Orlando for several years now! Small restaurant but their menu, service, and food pack a big punch! A family owned business, and the staff is extremely welcoming and friendly. The fish is always fresh, and portions are delicious and satisfying. Lunch, or dinner you can't go wrong with Bonsai!!!

3.5 stars! I was pleasantly surprised. We initially was headed to another sushi joint a few blocks away, but noticed this little hidden Japanese restaurant. The reviews on Yelp was surprisingly good too, so we decided to try it out... and was glad we did! The restaurant was small... about 10 bar seats and maybe 6-8 tables. They have a huge sushi menu. There were tons of unique options and many fusion rolls. I typically like more traditional rolls without a bunch if fuss, but we were feeling adventurous that night. We the Robin's Nest for an app, the Rolex roll and the Fried oyster roll (just ok). The Robins nest was amazing! A tower of tuna, albacore, avocado garnished with scallions, spicy mayo, and ponzu... it was the perfect combo... yummy! The Rolex roll was ridiculous, it had a bit too much going on... spicy tuna, salmon, yellowtail, avocado, asparagus oh my! That would have probably been perfect, but it was topped with soft she'll crab, eel, eel sauce, sirracha, jalapeños, masago... wow! It was hard to extinguish all the flavors apart :/ The service was good. The waitress was attentive and friendly. The décor was simple and modern. I would come back for sure, but I'd try some of their other rolls. They have a ton to choose from. Oh wait... the fried ice cream...yes a must try!

Ask the Community - Bonsai Sushi

Why are t they doing takeout?

They do takeout, they stop if they have too many orders to keep up with.

Does anyone know when they will reopen?

Had dinner there tonight!! Excellent as always!

    Did they shut down?

No. They are closed every year for two weeks in July. Sad. I know.

We choose to sit at the bar as it's open seating. my husband wanted the five spice chicken wings, and we were disappointed to learn that they've been taken off the menu. This is such a huge disappointment because that five spice dry rub was amazing. We ended up talking to the bartender and she said that they could do the lil sum sum (kids menu) wings naked and put the spice on the side. My husband chose to go that route (two order as there are only 3 wings an order) but thankfully, they actually tossed the wings in the spice, which was perfect. But we really do wish that they would bring back the actual full order of the five spice chicken wings as that was his go to when we went there and because that's not on the menu it may decrease the amount of time we go back now because he doesn't really care for a lot of the other menu items. I got the five spice green beans, which is one of my favorite items on the menu. I was surprised to hear that they had taken it off the menu for a while and that they had just brought it back. so glad that they did because that was the whole reason we had traveled out there and had they not been on the menu. There's a good chance we probably would've found somewhere else. I also had the Po Po Lau curry because it is another one of my favorite dishes.

The steamed gyoza had an odd texture that didn't seem quite right. The tuna tataki was the biggest letdown. I've never seen it presented like this, and the flavor and texture were closer to canned tuna than fresh fish. Tataki is usually lightly seared on the outside and still vibrant and fresh-looking inside, almost jewel-like but this was a dull brown color and looked like roast beef deli meat. Very unappetizing The rainbow roll and volcano roll were edible but very mediocre. I barely ate any of the meal, which was frustrating. I don't imagine they will stay open for long. I was really hoping to find another solid sushi option on this side of town, but this wasn't it. Mikado continues to be the only good option around.

Now for the food! We had gotten the beef skewer and chicken skewers as appetizers and let me tell you they were probably the best meat skewers that I've had in a Izakaya style Japanese restaurant. The steak was so tender and had great flavor, same with the chicken! The sauce was good, maybe a bit too heavy on the sauce but good pairing! 5/5 The tuna flight was . So good and the cuts of tuna was so tender and was amazing, good garnishes on top! 5/5 The rolls, we got a couple Yellow Fever: it was good, I'm not sure if I was a fan of the asparagus but it was good to have every now and then every other bite or so but not every time. It did have a slight kick to it but I liked it. Distinguished Gentleman: was great. The meat was tender and it had good flavor and my kids enjoyed it as a more kid friendly sushi, but I also enjoyed one bite that I was able to sneak before the kids devoured it. Shrimp Tempura roll (specially made for allergies): Standard goodness! I also almost forgot, I had gotten King Salmon nigiri and also eel nigiri, salmon was good! Normal salmon vibes 4/5 but the eel...probably the most disappointing menu item tbh. Tasted like the frozen Asian grocery store eel, just underwhelming and not a little tough. 2/5 wouldn't order again. but Overall, it was everything was great, we had good service and good food!
