This place is absolutely ridiculous. When you first walk in there's a really foul odor in the building. Have no idea what it smells coming from but it does smell like a sewer line and then you get past the smell and you go to try to order food to go and the lady tells you with only eight people in a restaurant that is gonna take us an hour to get two rolls Now if I chose to sit down, I can get my rolls quicker, but since my wife is at home and I wanted to bring her home some food. I can't get to go because it takes over an hour. That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard in my life. Ate here for lunch and it was great. I couldn't believe how extensive their roll menu was, plus they had special rolls! Our server was very nice and came around often. I got the hot tea which comes with unlimited refills and she always came by to refill my cup. I ordered the tropical roll and it was very yummy. I also ordered the escolar sashimi, which was also fresh and good. I liked the tropical roll so much I ended up ordering another one. Plenty of parking because it was in a plaza and the staff was friendly and quickly seated us. Loved the little sushi decor in the restaurant. The food was great and I was surprised at their huge list of rolls available. We started with a birds nest as a cold appetizer and got some rolls as well. The fish was fresh and delicious. We the Robin's Nest for an app, the Rolex roll and the Fried oyster roll (just ok). The Robins nest was amazing! A tower of tuna, albacore, avocado garnished with scallions, spicy mayo, and ponzu... it was the perfect combo... yummy! The Rolex roll was ridiculous, it had a bit too much going on... spicy tuna, salmon, yellowtail, avocado, asparagus oh my! That would have probably been perfect, but it was topped with soft she'll crab, eel, eel sauce, sirracha, jalapeños, masago... wow! It was hard to extinguish all the flavors apart :/ The service was good. The waitress was attentive and friendly. The décor was simple and modern. Ended up with salmon maki, 9 piece sashimi, seaweed salad, and spicy tuna on crunchy (deep fried) rice. The fish was fresh with my favorite being the salmon. Even after delivery, the temperature was still chilled (thumbs up)! Seaweed salad was pretty standard. I'm sure all sushi bars order from the same place lol. The crunchy rice was still warm and seasoned well. The tuna was a little too dark for my liking (not dark red, but dark brown). However the taste was still good. So this place is pretty solid. Friendly and thoughtful servers though (i had a baby with me and they made sure everything was out of grabbing distance). Salad dressing was too sweet (didn't look or taste like the regular ginger dressing that's used at Japanese restaurants) which goes the same for the broth they used for the Tempura Udon (not on the menu, but available to order). It's taken some time to write this. I've been to Bonsai several times for dinner and for lunch. I can easily say it is my new favorite sushi restaurant in the greater Orlando area. My girlfriend and I typically call to reserve before we go, tip: the location is small and cozy, but can get filled quickly. I recommend always calling ahead just in case. One of my favorite appetizers if the is the Spicy Crunch Nigiri, which is an amazing take on a classic dish. If you are bold and would like to try something, please do, this dish is fantastic. As a small what seems to be a family owned restaurant, they do a great job at catering their rolls and sushi to the Orlando audience. We're constantly on the search for new good sushi locations on this side of town. Immediately what had us was the location right near The Fresh Market. Not knowing how busy this place is on Sunday evenings, we called ahead to see if we should make a reservation. They eagerly said they'd save a table for us. Once we arrive we see it is a lot smaller than we anticipated, in an intimate way, which was enjoyable. There were only two tables open and a few spots at the sushi bar proving we made the right call by calling ahead! We were greeted right away. Our server did a great job guiding us through the favorites on the menu. Had we not had recommendations, who knows how we could've survived the scrolling list of sushi rolls. We did have to wait a little while for any of our food to come out, but as you'll soon read, it was definitely worth the wait. We ended up starting with the Spicy Tuna Crunch Nigiri & Shrimp Tempura. The tuna had such a great flavor and nice texture change with the fried rice. Definitely getting again when we go back. The tempura was among the better ones I've had in a while. It wasn't over battered and the flavor it had was great. Not that the shrimp was bad, but we enjoyed the vegetables more and will likely just get vegetable tempura next time. Of the four rolls we got (Turner, Magic, Anniversary & Bayhill) we were consistently going back and forth on how we'd rate them in terms of favorites. The Turner turned out to be a lot less spicy than we anticipated so it seems like it was missing a little something. The Anniversary had theses wontons on top with a sauce and was definitely necessary to complete the roll. Although difficult to get all the pieces in one bite, it was worth it. The final two were the ones we had the biggest toss up about. The Bayhill was the original top favorite due to the savory perfect flavor right off the bat, but ended up being tied with the Magic. The magic's use of the tempura (which was already noted earlier) pushed itself higher in the rankings as we worked our way through it. Little added bonus of a spicy krab salad at the bottom of the Magic roll was a nice touch. We only wish we had room to have the fried cheesecake or ice cream, but that'll have to wait until next time! Overall this was a great first impression of Bonsai Sushi and we can't wait to go back and try some other rolls our servers can recommend. read more

Very small, cozy, with a warm neighbor feel. What at first appeared to be an overwhelming menu, actually led to some really delicious rolls. As of now, it is the best sushi I've had in Orlando. We also tried the spicy edamame and wow. I don't like spicy but I LOVED this. If you like sweet drinks, try one of the flavored sakis. I had the lychee and it was yum. Amazing sushi place located in a tiny plaza. I found this restaurant in yelp while looking for sushi in Orlando. My husband & I were going to try a different sushi restaurant, more of a larger chain, but Bonsai stuck out. When we first arrived, it was difficult to find a parking spot as the other restaurants in the plaza all seemed very busy. When finally walked into Bonsai, I thought there was no way we were getting a table. The restaurant is very small. A hand full of tables then a few seats at the bar. It appeared they were very busy with take out as well. To my surprise, we were sat almost immediately. The service we got at Bonsai was incredible & the food was great! We ordered the miso soup, a house salad, the spicy edamame and 4 sushi rolls to share. All excellent. I highly recommend the spicy edamame. The flavor was so good I could not stop talking about it. While visiting this restaurant, you could tell the customers were local regulars. The wait staff hugged many people as they departed and all seemed very personable. Okay where do I start? This place is incredible! Their fish is so fresh and they only use the best ingredients for their sushi which results in the best tasting sushi in the Dr.Phillips area! We got the Bird's nest, Fatty Matt Roll, Rolex Roll, Scorpion Roll, and the Spicy Tuna Crunch Nigiri and they were all phenomenal! The Bird's Nest was large and well worth the price. It had large chunks of yellow tail, tuna and albacore. On the bottom was a ponzu like sauce that complemented the fish extremely well. The rolls were all large and filling! You cannot go wrong with any roll here. The Spicy Tuna Crunch Nigiri is one of my all time favorites and must haves whenever going to Bonsai.
