Why 4 and not 5. Because it is a good spot to come downtown before an event, great happy hour, sushi is good and overall it's decent. There is nothing wrong with a 4, it's just not quite a 5. I will go back, and have went back multiple times. Servers are great, never an issue and always good at getting more happy hour drinks, or that extra roll before you go. I come here every now and then on Fridays with one of my friends to enjoy the amazing happy hour. We've never had issues before with service, food quality, etc. so we keep going back! However, I decided to go yesterday with my husband since he's never been and I'm always talking about it; our experience was the complete opposite in terms of service. Our server (I think the bill said "Jay"?) was really rude when we started ordering and after he brought our food, he just never came back. It was pretty ridiculous. To the point where we needed to ask another server for help because he just never came back to our table. We saw him walking around to other tables, serving others, and even when my husband waved him down, he turned around and walked the other way. Needless to say, the experience was horrible. It sucks that we've always had great experiences in the past and this was the only time we've dealt with this because otherwise my review would be a 5-star one. There were 3 options for the $4 edamame appetizer, salt, lime or garlic. We opted for garlic and it was very tasty. It was a generous sized bowl of edamame to share. The $4 gyoza appetizer was ordered crispy and is served with the classic ponzu sauce. You can also order it steamed. The ponzu sauce is a citrus based soy sauce that always pairs well with gyoza. Shakai is a restaurant/lounge in the Downtown Orlando area that has been around for many years. Located near the heart of the Orlando's bar scene is Shakai tucked in between various bars. They do also become a lounge after hours where all the seats are moved to make it for more of a club type of scene. When you walk in you'll be greeted to a dimly lit environment that is illuminated with various light fixtures. It does lend itself to being more of a date night or appetizers and drinks with friends type of environment. The room is fairly spacious with ample seating, we didn't have reservations but were seated immediately on a Friday night. Our hostess was friendly and knowledgeable. We ordered a variety of appetizers to start including a miso soup, crab rangoons, shrimp shumai, katsu and a bento box. The miso soup was very salty, haven't had miso soup this salty before. The crab rangoons were quite good, included what I believe was actual real crab and the cream cheese filling wasn't over the top. The shrimp shumai wasn't my favorite, the texture was very soft for me. The katsu was very crispy and seasoned well, the sauce to go with it paired quite nicely. The bento box included steak, shrimp, veggies and noodles and everything was quite good. The noodles were cooked very well and the veggies had a nice char to them. The bottom line, this is a decent spot with decent food with a relaxed environment. Since the food options Downtown are limited this is a decent spot to get some food in between getting drinks. The croquettes were crispy but made of potatoes and a little bit of carrot, which was unfortunate as we were expecting them to come with some sort of meat. The gyozas were okay. For the rolls, we had the California, salmon, Dragon, and Crazy Coconut - the two last ones were flavorful but can't really say the same about the first 2, so the overall recommendation for the rolls is to skip the $4 ones. Drinks: $3 bottled beer, $4 house wine, $5 calls, and saketinis. We had a bottled Yuengling and tried my friend's apple saketini, which was too sweet for my taste. Looking for a nice Sunday Funday Brunch vibe, then look no further than Shakai Sushi Lounge. While I've been to Shakai on several occasions for more than just brunch, I will speak primarily on the brunch. While the name of the restaurant is Shakai Sushi Lounge, I can honestly say I've never had their sushi. However, I have had a few of their weekend brunch selections, in particular, their avocado toast and their French toast with berries. Both were quite good and filling. The lovely thing is, if you purchase an entree, you can upgrade your brunch experience to include bottomless mimosas and a side of your choosing for 2 hours for $45.00. It is truly a good deal for a weekend brunch - considering a few other popular brunch spots can get way pricier. Another great aspect is that typically, if you are looking for great music vibes and the opportunity to dance, then Shakai usually has a DJ during brunching hours to provide some of your favorite tunes to jam and move your body too. They also offer hookah - if you are looking for that within your brunch / weekend experience. It is priced outside of the brunch menu, and you must pay for that separately. It's reasonably priced and they offer a handful of flavor profiles. Split between friends that enjoy that, it can run you about $12.00 per person. Overall, this is one of a few brunch experiences that offers food, music, hookah and bottomless mimosas. Orlando, unlike other major hub cities, doesn't offer too many of those opportunities and few restaurants tend to fill up quickly or require the cost of entry in addition to what you must pay once you are seated. So, it's refreshing, Shakai doesn't typically have a cover fee to get into their brunch. However, they do accept reservations. So, if you'd like a guaranteed table, reserve ahead. As for the restaurant itself, it is mood-lighting forward. It's a bit darker inside, so if you are looking to take well-brightly, lit photos of your weekend look, then do so before you get inside or be prepared for flash photography. Seating is ample in the main dining areas as well as at the bar. It's not usually too packed, but it does fill up on the weekends. Food and beverages come out quickly. The staff is super nice, and the vibes are definitely provided! Definitely pay them a visit when the opportunity arises. Also, next time I visit, I'll be sure to make it a mission of mine to try their sushi, so I can share my thoughts on that. read more
