Word got out that there was a new place opening in Salem, and what better day - aligning with the Cherry Blossom Festival and Saturday market was brilliant. To say Opening Day was a hit is an understatement! We had a group of seven and the line was out the door for a while. The owner came out several times thanking everyone for their patience. Before long there were open tables and several sat down to reserve a space while others held the line to place our orders. The decor gives a fun anime vibe, with music complimenting the theme. They nailed it with a mini Godzilla and Bonsai centerpiece on the large main table. Menu options were diverse enough to satisfy all of us; from the Teriyaki Chicken Kaiju Bowl, Tuna Poke Bowl, Spicy Salmon Onigiri, to the Iced Ube Matcha, Milk Tea Boba, Sapporo Japanese Lager, and even a N/A Asahi 0.0 Lager. It was definitely worth the wait after just missing the food carts at the market and a stroll through the blooms and festivities at the State Capitol Park. I honestly enjoyed my first few visits here. Small issue the first time around, but no big deal. On my third visit, I was sitting alone in the corner, quietly journaling while finishing an energy drink from elsewhere before planning to order. The owner came right up to me and asked that I dont bring outside drinks in the future. I apologized, but odd assumption, considering I was a paying customer and fully intended to order once I had finished my previous drink. I was immediately turned off, so I just left. I later left an honest review and received an equally sarcastic response suggesting I try bringing drinks into other coffee shops as a "social experiment." Which I have seen done in the past, and it has never been an issue for other coffee shops. He told me that Bonzai was not a third space (coffee shops are third spaces..? Look it up) and that seating was for customers only. Ironic, given that I had already spent money there and planned to continue. If this is how returning customers are treated, I wouldn't expect much better as a first-time visitor; especially since I've had an issue 2/3 times I have visited. Super busy. Food was good not great. Nothing spectacular. Would have liked more food choices for those who cant have spicy. Was told they were running out of certain items. It was only 2pm. I think they needed to plan supplies better for their first week. Hopefully they will up the supply order soon. I will give them another try in a week or so. Very loud atmosphere. We love Bonzai! We came here opening weekend and they had a great DJ. It was packed and service was still really fast. We ordered the strawberry matcha and the fruity pebbles matcha, both were a hit. Came back for the poke bowl, the onigiri flight, spam musubi and more matcha. I ordered the peach this time and it's now my new favorite! The owners and staff are very friendly, the atmosphere is epic and the food/drinks can't miss. Huge plus, they give out stamp cards and they are located one block from our apartment. We love Bonzai and can't wait to try their summer specials. read more

This place was super cute, the service was really quick and the staff were kind. i personally really disliked the kaiju bowl, the rice was mushy, the chicken was rubbery/mushy (not really sure the best wording) and i just didn't like the mix of flavors so i ended up throwing it out after a few bites. however the matcha on the other hand has been the best i've had for awhile, loved it. i would definitely try this place again just something different to eat. read more

Laughable. Tried twice. Both times sucked. 1st time - we walk in and there was 1 person in line. We stand there waiting to order when other people entered. The dude looks up and says the line is over there. He had SEEN US STANDING THERE since we walked in, knowing we were in line. Also, my chai was DRY. How?!? 2nd visit - ordered the Shokuban toast. It was NOT at all "fluffy Japanese milk bread". It was literally 2 pieces of regular toast with the tiniest bit of the topping. So, if you're picturing the Japanese sandwiches with thick fluffy bread and a nice amount of topping, this isn't it. $5 for 1 slice of toasted bread. read more

I had the opportunity to come here on opening weekend about a month ago - in March 2026. The line flowed quickly for checkout, and I ordered a blue chai. It was really delicious. They specialize primary in matcha drinks, but had chai available too. I was so torn on which drink to try. I would have tried two, but I was already quite full from having brunch at Clink! which is in the same building. (Another place I love for their vibe and also the atmosphere.) I live in Portland, but if I was living in Salem I would be visiting on the regular because I love the tree and all the special ornate and unique touches that make it feel like you are in Japan. Just by setting foot in this place- you will feel like you are lost in Japan - in a good way! However, the timing of the opening matched seeing all the Cherry Blossom trees in Salem at the Capitol and getting all the vibes of that at their neighbor restaurant Clink! upstairs - I truly felt like I had taken an international vacation wholeheartedly to Japan - it felt like an epic adventure. I saved a plane ticket and could enjoy a special day just by road tripping in my car. I will be traveling back from Portland this summer again to try out more on the menu. So glad Salem is rejuvenating their city with some unique places that are top notch. Kompai and cheers to welcoming this new place to Salem. It's cool and kawaii. They also have some food options and snacks/beer - think Izakaya bar style - onigiri, rice bowls, edamame, snacky stuff. I'm completely matcha curious though so next time I'll be ordering that but darn, that chai was the bomb and so delicious too so it's tough to choose one drink. Great spot! A little on the pricy side, but the teas are great and the musubi is so yummy. The service has always been amazing; a lot of the times I come in the owner, Brent, is there and he provides amazing service. No matter who's at the counter I know I'm going to get great service. Drinks come out quickly, meaning there's plenty of time to hang out in the comfortable seating and chill environment. I love when Salem gets new, cute places like these. read more

This place is mid. It's pretty but the coffee is so watered down... 3 milk options but the oak milk is crazy thick????? I tried the miso coffee and it was unenjoyable I am so sorry. It was salty milk. Carrot cake was ok. Don't taste the coffee, all the carrot cake flavor is on top so really have to mix. read more

We came for the first time after hearing a ton about it on social media. The vibe was so cute, very calm music playing, the ambiance was beautiful. would be a great study spot! I had a strawberry matcha and we also got the fruity pebbles, unfortunately we weren't crazy for either one. I love matcha but the one I got lacked that strawberry flavor, and the fruity pebbles tasted a bit more like sour milk. despite this i'd still come back and maybe give different items a try! still nice regardless!! read more

After visiting several times, I can confidently say that Bonzai is a great breath of fresh air to Downtown Salem. The atmosphere is friendly, unique, and inviting. The drinks are delicious, if a little on the sweet side, and there are a ton of options for Matcha lovers. I've only tried their food a couple times but I enjoyed the egg salad sando as a light lunch. Staff has also been very friendly and has actually made an effort to remember my wife's and I's names, which is awesome to feel remembered! Can't wait to go back! read more

The food is overpriced and underwhelming. The matcha tastes more like sweetened milk than actual matcha, which makes all the different flavored options feel gimmicky rather than thoughtful. The whole place comes off as performative. Leaning heavily on trendy aesthetics like looping lo-fi visuals instead of focusing on quality. My musubi was dry and oddly prepared, and it didn't seem like the staff had a strong handle on the food. Overall, it feels like it's catering to people who like the idea of the food more than the food itself. The staff also kept changing the song abruptly and arguing over what they should play, and it was distracting. That said, it was edible so I'll give it two stars. read more

the coffee is fairly okay, matcha is meh. i had pretty high hopes for their salted earl grey flavored latte & matcha but it kind of fell flat. the staff are friendly, and the cafe itself was really cute + the art above the ordering area was pretty! but unfortunately the drinks are def not worth the price + amount you get + the taste. i wish there was a better matcha spot i could recommend but have yet to find one :-( ‍ read more
