I came here for 12 years religiously before moving out of NYC. Malynda was my go-to, she got my eyebrows into amazing shape for my wedding in 2010 when she was there regularly. I mean, I have been raving about this place for years. I was back in the city after moving away in 2020 and went in for a tint and wax and it was sadly my first disappointing visit. I was getting a tint and the woman (I didn't catch her name) told me it would be in for 5-10 minutes. Normal. 15 minutes later, the dye is burning my skin and the woman who applied it has moved on - in that time she tinted someone and started waxing them - and then started tinting and waxing another person! Another very nice woman Aysha comes over and takes the tint off me when she could see I was uncomfortable and getting impatient. While this is happening, the original woman is completely ignoring me. Did I offend her somehow? I have no idea. Aysha ended up doing my wax after she finished another woman (who came in significantly after me, also got tint and wax). Aysha was kind but she ended up lifting my skin over one eye - and now I get to walk around like this for the next few days. I'm not on medications anymore that would cause this and I can't say I'll ever be able to go back. I left it at 2 stars because I used to love it here. read more

I went here a few times and found the service to be fine but nothing special. However, on my most recent visit I used the bathroom for the first time. The below sign was hung on not one, but two different walls in the bathroom. I was appalled. I gently told the staff I found the language surprising and offensive. Their response was to laugh and blame their "boss's crazy sense of humor." This is an establishment that primarily serves young women, a good portion of whom likely have faced/are facing an unwanted pregnancy, have mourned/are mourning a miscarriage, or tried/are trying unsuccessfully to get pregnant. Whatever the angle, I cannot see any way a sign with a joke about flushing babies down a toilet is funny. I don't think the offensiveness of this sign has anything to do with politics or PC policing. I walked into this place spontaneously today after seeing a sign that read "Voted Best Brows in NYC," or something along those lines. I had been meaning to shape up my brows that have thinned and not been as lush and shapely as they had been in years past. I decided to walk in with my son on a whim. We were sort of greeted by staff and I was very warm and friendly and broke the ice by saying, "I heard you guys do the best brows in NYC!" The staffer reluctantly agreed. Ok, that fell flat. So then I told her what I wanted, and what I was working with. She asked, "Are they currently filled in?" I replied yes, as there was pencil on them and some brow gel. I said, "But I'd love to see what you can do." "Oooookayyy... well... I guess have a seat and I can take a look." This is her reply. She seemed so uncomfortable and hesitant and it was extremely off putting. If you're allegedly the best at brows in the city, then talking brows should be second nature. Instead it was the most awkward interaction possible. Noticing that the vibe was not getting better, I said, "You know on second thought, never mind." I could hardly get the sentence out. She said "OKAY!!!" so fast that it was ridiculous. She was ecstatic for me to leave. As I walked out, puzzled and annoyed, I noticed her talking about me to her coworker as I watched through the window. Don't go here. Especially if you're a black woman. I would have given this place 4 or 5 stars until my experience took a total nosedive. I came in to get my brows dyed for the first time, and was told it costs $20. After coloring, the girl asked "Want me to just clean up the edges?" and I said yea sure, expecting a little tweezing... and then unexpectedly she started waxing. I wish she told me she was about to wax, because I was on lunch break and had to go back to work at my store with a VERY red forehead. I go to the register to be checked out, and instead of the agreed $20, I'm charged $44 for color AND WAX ! And this is not the first time a perfect stranger commented on my brows, just last night I was getting a facial and the aestician was telling me my pores are too big but my brows are perfect. I must admit I would much rather be a size 2 (who am I kidding I'll take a size 10) who gets complemented on my hair, legs, ass or even my breasts but what I was given in the beauty gene pool was facial hair that is sculptable. I would like to send my thanks for this beauty signature to two contributing factors - my Dad who still wears my original brow and Boom Boom Beauty Bar who created the brows that get the red carpet attention. When you walk into Boom Boom you are among the diva's and it is the diva who knows the power of a perfectly sculpted brow. Boom Boom shouts drama with their décor and their skill. You know you are in the best place to have eye enhancing brows when you walk in the door and there is more then one disco ball, hot pink thongs and pantyhose hanging from chandeliers, a wall of Hall of Fame brows (my picture will be added soon I'm sure) and a wishing wall displaying index cards with brightly colored wishes such as "more sex please". Boom Boom reached out to me via e-mail asking for feedback and was offering up a free brow tint for your feedback. I'm not posting this review because they did NOT respond back to me with the free brow tint, but because if you run a company and ask for feedback, then address you client's concerns. Because I heard nothing back from them, I am posting the feedback I provided: So I tried Boom Boom Brow Bar mainly because I wanted to see how you all measured up against Benefit Brow Bar where I have been going for years. To give you my true feedback, I have organized this according to pros/cons Pros -I love the space! It is very girly, whimsical, and I felt great immediately upon walking in. -The prices are very competitive if not better than Benefit, especially with the Happy Hour deals! -The technicians, I liked the fact that every person in there can actually do brows. In Benefit, you need to wait specifically for a brow technician as some of the employees are only makeup artists -The birthday special, very awesome that you offer the free birthday brow wax! And now unto the cons Cons -The actual wax itself, let me explain here. I got a brow wax/brow tint combo. The brow wax was good, but it honestly was not the best brow shaping I have ever had. I really feel like Benefit has you guys upped one here. The technician was nice, polite, and obviously skilled, but she did not wow me with my brow shaping. I felt like much consideration was not given to the actual shape of my face, and what would be the shape to best accentuate that. In terms of the tint, again it wasn't the darkest most robust tinting I have ever had. The color was fine, but I felt like the tint used at Benefit really made the shape of my eyes pop. -No makeup application after. For some people, they are a bit red/irritated after a brow wax, and having a makeup application after is a great service to offer! I look forward to getting my brows waxed and then having the quick makeup touch up that again Benefit offers. -No appointments. I'm not sure why you all don't offer appointments? I like the certainty of knowing I can walk in for my appointment and leave vs. not knowing how many women will be ahead of me when I walk in. I hate to keep mentioning this, but again Benefit offers appointments! I hope this feedback was helpful and I would give Boom Boom Brow Bar another chance again. OK, so, you're probably looking at my previous review and wondering how I could go from 2 stars to 4. Well, this is what we should all love about America, life and Yelp. EVERYONE GETS SECOND CHANCES! I decided to go back to Boom Boom and give it another chance. Also, they're very close to my home and pretty reasonably priced for such a clean, cute space. I'm pretty sure that I had Tammy again, but she was in great spirits and did an awesome job. She was very gentle and careful with my brows, not even any redness. And as for my bikini, let's just say my husband is very happy. But, I would like to add, that I think it would be really awesome if in some imaginary scenario they would turn Boom Boom Brows into an S&M dungeon at night. I walk by all the time so thought I'd stop in to support a local business. Service was friendly but sadly the actual waxing was not very good for this price point. I had requested a clean up around my brows, maintaining the current shape. Left with the upper part of my brows completely gone, totally altering the shape. Additionally, one side is much thinner than the other. I tried to mention I was unhappy about them being uneven before leaving, but she was pretty dismissive. After doing research for hours online, I settled on here because it was close to my house and had great reviews. I was not disappointed! I walked in around 1:15 on a Monday and was the only one in the store - by the time I left around 1:45 things were a little crowded but no one was waiting for that long! Jessica both tinted and then waxed my brows and was amazing! She listened to what I wanted done, made some suggestions and made sure to check the tint 5 minutes in so that it didn't get too dark. I had originally requested someone, and wasn't told she won't be working the day I went, so was paired with someone at the last minute, who seemed a total novice. I got a Rehab Brow Wax + Brow Tint for $50, which is fair priced for the city. The eyebrow wax took all of 3 minutes though. I wasn't sure she knew what she was doing. The eyebrow tint needed to set, so there was a bit of downtime with me, but the girl didn't ask if I needed anything or really all that engaging. She began flipping through a magazine as my brows were setting! How professional? I chatted with the owner of the place instead, who was sprawled on a chaise lounge with her terrier dog, which I found very quirky (this is a salon after all). My end results were surprisingly good though, if a little harsh for my face. The eyebrow tint mellowed down after a few days thankfully. It took out the inconvenience of Anastasia, with the same quality! No wait (no appointments, yay) and was super quick. They seem to experience constant turnover, and the quality is entirely dependent on who you get. The problem is once you find someone you like, chances are they'll be gone next time you go in. I have been going to boom boom for several years Every time I find the right person , they leave. I went last week to a girl to have a eyelas tint I have been doing this for years. I questioned her precision shaping and without the slightest quiver of annoyance said she could take a little more off, but then explained how the current shaping opened up my features. I did feel like the shape was super crisp so I decided to accept it. Paid 33 dollars for eyebrow tweezing, was done in less than 5 minutes. The stylist did not ask me what I wanted and just started quickly tweezing away. When I got home and looked in the mirror I noticed how my brows were asymmetrical. I was most disappointed by their shape: basically none. I had waited a long time to grow my eyebrows only to see them now shortened to two short little lines. Won't be returning here. I think for the price the quality and attention paid to the customer's efforts should be much better.
