ATTENTION: If you use a Credit/Debit card here, PLEASE READ THIS. I like this place, been going there for many years. Usually a cool vibe, nice people, cheap drinks, good pours it is still 6am-2am which works for those of us who like a pop or 2 in the morning. And I like that they do take cards, as several other bars I like in adjacent Long Beach/Lakewood areas are cash only (Pro tip: best way to hide money if you are an owner) which can be a problem for those of us who typically don't carry a lot. Of course they all offer an ATM, from which they all collect a 'fee' for its use...how much I can't say, as I don't care for having to pay both the ATM fee AND the fee my bank would charge for using out-of-network ATM. Pretty sure the total of both would approach $8-$10..unless you took out @ least $100 it seems like way too much to pay if you are only getting $20 or $40. BUT here's a little "catch" with regard to BD's card policy: last Saturday I was in there @ 9am. Was meeting a friend, who was running late. Had a drink while waiting. Bartender 'Cassie' whom I had never met, asked for payment. I gave my debit card, thinking I would be staying once my friend arrived. All the other bartenders there all pour a nice drink. 'Cassie' short-poured me...I asked about it, not much response. The few guys in there were playing some really obnoxious hard-core rap where every 5th word was either f*** or mother*****...I decided I was leaving, intending to call my friend to meet up elsewhere. Paid for my $4.75 drink with a $5 bill, leaving the 25¢ tip she deserved. Got the card back, left. What I didn't know until later was that by giving my card to them, they input it into their register, which apparently "pre-qualifies" you as a customer in order for them to be assured you have enough money in your account to pay a bar tab. All fine, except that action in effect puts a $40 "hold" on that money for 5 DAYS, and you do not have access to that money until the "hold" falls off 5 days later. I was not happy about this revelation, as my money is tight @ this moment. I will still go there, but will certainly keep this in mind for future. All the other bartenders there I know never ask for card until I leave, @ which time it's MY CALL to pay with either cash or card. It would be a kindness if that "pre-qualification" was shared with anyone asked for payment on their 1st drink and they elected to pay with card. Maryann (the owner) are you listening?? read more

Cool little dive bar, typical atmosphere old school decor, pool tables, dart board and a video game! Regulars pretty friendly, Touchtune jukebox and prices are average for a dive bar and I saw people bring in food. We went here after having breakfast a few doors down. Noticed it's been a long time since I reviewed and it's a bit unfortunate that I can't say anything has changed. I'm a big pool player, so it is nice to see that the pool tables are still well kept, but that's about the only upside in my eyes. The floor is still in bad condition, furniture is in decent shape. Dark atmosphere when you're there at night as they don't have much interior lighting in the very small bar. For some reason they got rid of the divider in the mens bathroom so it's essentially become a 1 person bathroom which still has a bad smell and the door lock doesn't work. The condition of the bathroom altogether is just horrific, it's so run down it's very disappointing. The staff and customers are almost always kind and fun to be around even if you're strangers, but I'd really wish ownership would do something about improving the bathrooms at the very least. read more

My friend and I generally only go on Saturday's when we can get together. I love dive bars and to me this is one of the best! Since it's Saturday only, mostly, generally the bartender is Kaitlyn, who always remembers our names. We have had Lorraine and Lucas as well which are just fine and entertaining themselves. We come in to drink, play the scratchers and I'm addicted to the video game. I want my seat to always be there, like Norm, but I don't have that kind of status lol. We always have a good time, even won a $1,000 scratcher there one day. My kind of place!. My only complaint is faucets are not that expensive. Fix the faucet in the men's room! read more

Love this cool little whole in the wall. The bartender has a lot of experience bartending and got all my drinks just right. They have the touch tunes machine which I love since I like to spend lots of money on my music... they have pool tables which was nice... the prices were reasonable and there's parking out in back. I've giving this place 5 stars because if you're Loki g for a dive bar, there are only a few basic things you need covered. Cheap drink, plenty of bar space at counter, pool table and internet jukebox. This place has all of these so no complaints. Its a locals kind of vibe here and very blue collar so feels down to earth. It's clean enough and when I've been there and Katelin has been working, she has been friendly and attentive. Beer selection is a little limited but again, it's a dive bar so you have to have realistic expectations. read more

Nothing fancy just a hole in the wall. In a corner where no one knows, who I am. Or any member of my tribe. We joke how this is "Trixy's Office" why? because you could multi-task by bringing in yur laptop to work. Yeah, you can sure due that! Then take a break and have a cocktail. All while you take a break and catch a pool table game. It is really an old gem and it is a real relaxed atmosphere. Again nothing fancy and it is rundown but in the last 5 yrs that I have visit. Servers are stellar and locals are super nice and welcoming. I like dark places with a good AC and plenty of easy back parking. read more

On top of that, if I paid with a debit card they would again ask for my ID enough though I literally saw them take other people's cards who AGAIN were my age not being asked for their ID. This place is sad. It was my friend's birthday and we wanted to grab a beer and play darts after our brunch so we headed here. My gf was saying that they were pretty racist from her experience here. I did not mind what she said because I thought it could not be that bad. But oh man, the bartender definitely treated us some type of way because we are minorities. First off our whole party was all above legal age. My brother showed him his ID and the bartender got upset that when he asked my brother for his ID AGAIN, my brother said, "I already showed you -chuckle-" (proceeds to show him his ID) and we end up getting kicked us because the guy told my brother that he was lying? I was trying to understand where the bartender was coming from, telling my party to leave (being annoyed with my party). He continued to tell us that "someone lied to him and he does not want to deal with it." From the bartender's perspective I was trying to understand that my brother was possibly giving him a hard time, so I was getting irritated with my brother. But hearing the story from my brother's side I believed my brother (he's not hard headed). Even a regular was heckling us about the whole situation when we were just trying to figure out what was happening? One of the customers told us to "Get the fuck out." If we were heathens to the place, I would understand this treatment and I would not even write a review. But we were so respectful as we always are. I wouldn't really recommend this place if you are not white or a "regular?" The bartender also took my friend's drink away from her when she had more than half left (she was minding her own business sitting at the bar and was not even hanging out with us and they would not offer a refund). The guy cussed at us too saying "I don't need your fucking money." I hate to give a low rating, but the bartender coming out badmouthing us, pretending to jerk off at us, and throwing up the middle finger set me off. P.S. The bartender seemed drunk. read more

This is a classic old school dive bar. They open early in the morning so if you need a little something to drink to get your day started they can take care of that need. This is a bar strictly for drinking stiff drinks at a great rate. If you are looking for some eye candy this is not the place to be unless you like mature ladies and gentlemen. Bottom line you can inebriated for a lot cheaper than any other place in Los Alamitos unless you're drinking out of a brown paper bag from the liquor store across the street. read more

Tawdry little dive bar. Place to go to get away from reality. Took my coworker there, got a little crazy, left with a great memory. Racism? Not. Food, only had the food once, carnitas and the barbacoa, great, and cheap. Don't knock it if you haven't tried it. Be happy you can go somewhere with a friend, or whatever, and enjoy the friend along with some great food, drink, music. And a happy staff that treats you with dignity, not a mark. Good price for strong drinks. Seriously, if you have friends who are new to drinking, don't send them here, it'll ruin the experience of every other bar since they'll pour you a Long Island Iced Tea that'll set you for the next few hours. Never crowded, for better or for worse, but unfortunately this also means there isn't too much going on. I understand it's a tiny and laid back townie bar in my hometown, that my mom warned me about, but it's worth a drink or two. Highly recommend it if you're in the area. read more

Boon Docks Cocktails is a typical OC dive bar. Two pool tables, a dartboard, a few bad beers on tap, and wine in single-serve plastic bottles. Mixed drinks are probably your best bet here. They did have Bootleggers IPA and Lagunitas IPA. We came here on a Saturday night for an unofficial post-wedding gathering. I hope that this isn't their busy night because they had plenty of room for us. Apparently Mary the bartender got a little nervous. Not to worry: we're just normal folk like your regulars, just better dressed (and much better looking!) She seemed nice enough, but the more I tipped, the slower she got. Coors Light: $3.50. Miller Light: $3.50. Mixed marriage. I think they have some snack food items. We brought in our own. I was trying to come up with a pithy phrase to describe the fragrance, but Ray W. put it best: don't bring a first date here. Some of the reviews below already say it very well. I especially like Eric T.'s and Leah N.'s, although I'm not ashamed to say I really love this place. I love the vibe here, fake wood paneling and all. Video game multiplayer on the bar. Electronic darts. Pool. A small feast for the senses when you first visit. A homecoming for all visits thereafter. The regulars are exactly the kind of random people you can have a delightfully random conversation with. This is in Los Alamitos, but also a stone's throw from the southeast side of Long Beach. Folks are friendly and will chat you up. There's a guy who comes in regularly (on Thursdays, between 6-7:30, I think) and sells excellent produce to the regulars. Buy a bag of plum tomatoes and a couple avocados while you swill your dry martini, which, with premium alcohol, is probably going to set you back about $5. Only good thing I have to say is the price of drinks and how strong they are and what a sweatheart Loraine is, she also has a bad ass mullet. But, I recently went in where there was a different bartender. A much heavier, younger, blonde lady and she sucked. Awful. Terrible energy and approach, not helpful at all I mean I could go on.My buddy was trash and was checking to make sure he closed his tab and she rolled her eyes at me and made a dumbass remark. Was just trying to make sure her and the bar got paid. Eating nuts obnoxiously in front of everyone, ducking hell. I immediately paid my tab and went to the sport, nothing but super kind sweethearts and good energy over there. They're also great looking, this oaf was site for sore eyes as well as a bitch. I've been to Boondocks only occasionally only because they have a pool league team, an opponent. Otherwise, I would never patronize this dump. Service is terrible, maybe because out of the 30 or so patrons, I'm the only one who's not white. The bartender said "I don't know" when I asked if the bar served bottled water and then she walked away. After seeing her serve four or five others, I decided that she wasn't going to go look for the water and I left the counter. Half an hour later she yells across the room "your water's on the bar". Came here because it is close to mamas after getting some mimosas. This place is the most racist and ageist place I have ever been to. As soon as I walked in their regulars were criticizing us for being younger and different than their usual crowd. We wanted to play darts and enjoy a drink. We showed our ID's and the bartender must've forgot about us showing our ID since we all showed it previously and the bartender already served and charged our friend for a drink. Afterwards he kicked us all out (party of 11) and said we had all lied after we had already showed our ID. The regulars then proceeded to heckle us and say to get the fuck out. We tried to understand the situation but they were starting to get aggressive towards us and we decided to leave. My friend tried to get a refund for his drink that they had served him but was denied, needless to say they did not get a refund after everything that happens mind you the drink was not even half drunk. This place is not good for people who are looking to just chill and enjoy a nice vibe. They make racist remarks and condemn those who are younger than them. I would strongly discourage anyone who is looking to come here to spend any money or time as they would much rather make new potential clientele feel uncomfortable and unwelcomed. If Marys working i give it 5 stars!!! But this blonde girl who i first saw today Sunday Sept 12 is awful!! Rude & has no idea whats going on. A group of 12 if us came in today we are locals & come in alot & we LOVE Mary, today was oyr first time with this bartender. My neohew was 21 in march & has the rectangle id, she would not serve him and she told him he had to leave so we all left and went next-door to the Griffin Grill and put all our money there! Great service!!! Nobody was even in boondocks and the guy sitting at the bar was even trying to tell her look at the kids birthday and she said nope I'm not looking at anything! So she lost a big tip today and we probably will not be back so Griffin grill got our business!! Before I sully my reputation by admitting that I have hung out in this dive I have to explain that I live within walking distance and I'd rather drink at a dive than be plastered and drive home. Now, I believe that a bar can be evaluated by just a few major characteristics. Ambiance, the ratio of the cost of alcohol to the potency of the drink, and the crowd. Other little factors matter here and there but at the end of the day I think the ideal place to get drunk is with a group of friends on strong cheap drinks in a cool locale. The Boon Docks can be this place if you bring your own friends and enough money to pump the jukebox and own the pool tables and dart boards. It's sure small enough for one party to run the house. The Boon Docks is located in what is jokingly referred to as "Downtown Los Alamitos." It, between the 4 other dives in the area, serve the same crowd who must have been going there for decades. At least that's what I can tell since most of them have their names written on their own stools so they can be sure no one sits in their seats. This bar does open at 6 am and believe me when I tell you there is a 6am drinking crowd. You'll be petrified to know that some of them are Caltrans workers. This in itself explains the horrendous highway conditions in North Orange County. It closes at 1am, or whenever the bartender decides they're done working for the night. The crowd dramatically changes throughout the day. Don't go thinking that I go drinking in the morning, I know that these folks are in here because of the regulars who stay all day. And by all day I mean from the morning until the occasional times I roll in at around 9 or 10 pm. This is when the night regulars live there. But even more memorable are the characters who run the bar: the bartenders. They all pour with a heavy hand, each with their own personal loyal following, some of whom will only come in on their favorite bartender's night. There's the jovial Sunday night bartender, the sweet as pie weeknight bartender, and the no-non-sense-here- to-get-you-drunk-but-not-too-drunk-or-she'll-kick-you-out-of-the-bar weekend bartender. The willingness of the bartenders to make specialty drinks depends on whose shift you're coming in on. I know they have a blender but most of them refuse to use it. I don't think they even have a muddler on site but the weeknight sweetie pie will hand muddle you an old fashioned. Don't bother asking for anything too complicated on the weekend; say the word puscafe and you might end out on your a$$. Now it seems like I know a whole lot about the bar, and it's true, I do! But you will too if you happen to come in an sit a spell. The bar regulars form a friendly welcoming family who like family knows all your business because someone else in the bar is telling it. You might just call it the grapevine of the neighborhood. Introverts beware. Non regulars usually consists of people who stumble in from the other local bars, people who come with friends who live in the neighborhood and the Cypress College crowd. Drinks run cheap, $3 well drinks, similarly cheap beer. I think the most expensive drink I've ever had there is about $6 and it was a shot of Patron Silver. There's complimentary oil popped popcorn and chips that you can buy to sop up the inevitable large amounts of alcohol you'll unknowingly imbibe because you had no idea who strong the drinks were. On Saturday's they do free lunch, home cooked and brought in by the owner's girlfriend depending on what she wants to make for the week. On Sunday there are free chili dogs starting at lunch until the night bartender comes in to clean it all up. Entertainment wise there's a digital jukebox that will charge you more for a few songs than the bartender will charge you for a gin and tonic. There are 2 pool tables that run $0.50 a game and 2 electronic dart board that cost about the same. I've brought my friends here from Irvine, Hollywood, etc. The general consensus is that it's a cool place to hang out every once and a while, particularly popular with my hipster buddies, but to be honest I think they're just wowed that they can get plastered for less than $20. read more

If your missing the stench of latent puke in your life this place is a great bar to find it. Tap beer was not cold. Dart board was broken. Quarter top arcade machine was broken. Hot spot lotto was broken. No hot chicks. 1 old guy passing out on the bar. How could you go wrong? Upon my last visit I am convinced this place is a cover-up for something much larger in scale. No one in their right mind would let a bar they own go into the shitter as such. I am convinced this place is even beyond the tv show bar rescue's help and guidance. Coming from someone who loves dive bars, I recommend drinking anywhere else other than here. Like out in the alley behind the joint. Bring your own cold drinks naturally. read more

Friend and I went here on Saturday after discovering that Don the Beachcomber felt like closing a half-full parking lot and only had valet parking available...weak. On our way back to Los Al, my friend wanted to come here. She lives a block away and I was thinking to myself "You sure? It's a dive." but she insisted. Entered from the back, flower pot ashtray, check. Funky restroom smell from the left hand hallway, check. Seating for about 15 at the bar (it was only about a third full), check. Some playing some Morrisey/The Smiths on the internet juke box, check. So far, so good. A few things about the bartender Mary: don't whistle in here, she'll tell you it's rude in no uncertain terms. If you want a shoot the root (or I'm thinking Irish car bomb, they do have Guinness in the can), you're SOL as she doesn't "drop shot glasses". Also saw that they really don't have a lot of glassware. So-so selection of bottle beer, only had Hef (I think) on draft, but you really can't beat $10 for three drinks. read more
