My review is for Boriken Restaurant which shares the space with the Mexican restaurant located in the same space. The Puerto Rican food that I got - mofongo with fried meat was excellent - broth was just right. I also ordered 1/2 pound of the roast pig or "pernil". It was wonderful and the prices were great! It just opened less than a week and they will need time to get into the groove of having a restaurant vs. a catering business. The location is not the best due to lack of parking and its an old spot that needs a face lift. The menu has a lot of "street" food that is similar to snack or quick eats along with more time consuming dishes. I have had the pleasure of dining in fancier restaurants on the island and in Chicago that are Puerto Rican and know a few people in the business that run restaurants. No matter what the cuisine the failure rate is high and it takes a lot of courage to open one. Give the place a break, keep buying the food and eventually they will be able to afford another location that is bigger with better amenities. Order ahead of time if you are under time constraints. Things will get better as time goes by and they figure out what items are the most popular. read more

What an amazing little find! This food is super authentic and when visiting friends in aurora I was able to order their jibarito with aroz con guandules - so so so yummy! Just tried this place for the 1st time today & I'm not really sure why or how they even have 4 1/2 stars!! The service was horrible, the lady taking our order didn't even smile, let alone say Hello! I had a sandwich de Pernil & my husband had a Steak Jibarito. We also tried an empanada & an alcapurria. The best thing was the rice, that's about it. I won't even go into detail about how dirty the place looked. We were looking forward to eating some PR food but left so disappointed. read more

I am Puerto Rican, and I have to tell you this place is AMAZING!!! I screwed up my online order for pick up today and they had already started my initial order. I ended up buying something from the menu to cover the cost of the chicken they started to fry. I spoke with Nathaniel, he was very friendly and accommodating to change my order at the last minute. I can't say enough. Don't let the location deter you from trying it. Clean and great food. My fellow Boricuas, I'm glad you're still in business, keep our cuisine alive! Finally went to have some pastelillos rice and relleno de papa! I was not disappointed! I went a little later in the day and there wasn't anymore relleno de papa left but the chef was such an angel and still made one for me after seeing that I was pregnant. This place is a hidden gem. Best Puerto Rican food in the area. The alcapurrias, mofongo, arroz con gandules, pernil, chicharrones de pollo, jibaritos, tostones and everything else is phenomenal. I recommend this place to anyone and everyone who wants good food and great service. read more

So, we found this place and decided to try it out based on the Yelp reviews. Best decision we made all week. We each had a Jibarito de pernil, which was friggin amazing, and finished it off with an Alcapurria and an empanada. You know your having an amazing meal when you can't stop smiling as you eat... Jibarito was great. Steak was tender. Tostones fresh and crispy. Pernil was wonderful. Rice was average but you'll never get great pr rice from any joint or restaurant. Alcapurrias were pretty good. Not perfect but hit the mark and fresh. Pastellios also pretty good. All and all this is the best Puerto Rican food you will get anywhere close to Chicago. read more

My rating is for the bacaliato (salted cod pancake). Crispy exterior soft and chewy interior with the most bacalao I've ever found in one. I'd suggest take out. The location, layout and decor are lacking for a comfortable meal. Check the hours of operation before arriving. read more

OMG.... I am Puerto Rican and it is so hard to find a good Puerto Rican Restaurant outside of the city. I was raised in Humboldt Park area in Chicago and live by Rockford IL and so happen to work down the street from this dime place. I cook our food on a daily basis but sometimes I want to have it for lunch and not have to make it myself or go to my parents house for it. Let's just say this was like eating at my parents house the flavors were on point. The pernil was tender and juicy on the Jibarito sandwich I had with my you can forget the cola champagne!!! I went in for the first time. This is a cash only restaurant. There is a little bit of a wait. They didn't have a lot of fritura under the heating lamps, which I am good with because then I know it had not been sitting there for the entire day. They quickly made me some fresh bacalaitos, and alcapurrias. They ran out at 3 on a Sunday of relleno de papa. Everything was tasty. Will definitely go again. Drove 40 minutes to get here! Came here months ago on a whim, and the food did not disappoint, again. Do not expect a restaurant ambience. It is next to a gas station and it is small inside with the tables connected in a long family style setting, parking close is limited too, but who cares! If your looking for a fancy night out, this is not it, but if you want a great Puerto Rican meal, take the drive. They also share the location right now w/a Mexican establishment, as well. They have their own little section to cook. Food diversity at its best;)The family and friends that run this Puerto Rican cuisine, truly are a diamond in the rough. The food is delicious!! The staff were friendly and inviting. Every Puerto Rican family has their own spin on what they add extra to their rice, besides the gandules. The flavor is all there! We ordered the mofongo (DELICIOUS) w/carne frita (smashed plantains w/garlic and fried pork, plus you get the broth to dip your pork;) and you get a little lettuce & tomato salad w/a special dressing. We had the tostones w/garlic, alcapurrias, a pernil (slow roasted pork shoulder marinated) sandwich, DELICIOUS! My husband will gladly drive the 40 minutes, just for this sandwich! Their pernil is deliciously made! We also took home a pernil jibarito (flattened fried green plantains w/pork)...delicious! Yes, it's a small kitchen, food is made to order, fresh, some things get sold out sooner than later, since they only get so much for the day. Call ahead if there is something specific you want, so you know what to expect. It is worth the wait! I came here w/my family (my husband and my 2children), if you can have an open mind with regard to the environment and can truly just enjoy the simplicity of the surroundings. You will not regret stopping in for a truly delicious meal! The locals know it and there are people constantly coming in! Orders are non-stop and nobody cares about waiting!
