My party of 7 walked in for happy hour with no reservation. It was so busy and packed! we were SO LUCKY that 6 seats opened at the bar and we quickly sat there, staff was sooo accommodating and so friendly! We quickly ordered food and drinks before happy hour ended, I appreciated our waiter (I believe his name was Daniel? sorry I don't remember) and the hospitality he provided!! The STEAK was the BEST steak I have had so far, it MELTS and was so JUICY! Talking about it makes me salivate! overall first impression of this place was amazing. Will definitely come back to cowboy star for the steak and service!!!
Cowboy Star Restaurant and Butcher Shop on Tenth Ave offers some of the best steaks in town. Dry-Aged beef as well all the classics such as Filet Mignon, New York Strip, Porterhouse and Ribeye. On this visit, I was excited to come back to Cowboy Star as its been years since my last visit. They definitely made some really good changes with increased seating a more intimate dining area. The night started of course with bread - buttery, soft and so fresh its melts in your mouth. Second on deck was the wedge salad which had one of the fattest piece of pork belly and it was so good that I could eat a whole portion. With my main I went with the 18oz Dry-Aged T-Bone cooked medium rare from Snake River Farms. I didn't know much about Snake River Farms but from what I am told that their beef is top notch and sure enough, it was one of the best steaks I've had as it texture and taste was outstanding. For sides - always have to get the creamed spinach which was great and always a nice side to compliment the meat. We ordered the Mac and Cheese as well and that was excellent as well. One of the great things that sets Cowboy Star apart from the rest is the complete dining experience. A friendly staff from the front of the house to the back of the house, service was excellent. Each staff had personality and were fun to chat with. Highly recommend Cowboy Star if you are wanting a steakhouse with an excellent experience from start to finish. You won't be disappointed, its well worth the visit.
The service was great. We had a table reservation and got there a little early so we sat at the bar. Once our table was ready they moved everything over for us. The steak was flavorful but just slightly overcooked. Mac and cheese was really good as well. We hadnt even ordered it but saw it at another table and knew we had to try. It is extremely dark inside though, had to use a flashlight to read the menu.
They accommodated a slightly bigger party than we had reserved which was so kind of them. The service was outstanding and my entire party enjoyed their steaks. The star of the show was the mussels and bone marrow starters along with my pork dish. Each so flavorful, unique and outstanding. This is such a fantastic place to have happy hour, special occasions or just a night out. The sangria hit the spot too!
I love this place. It doesn't matter whether you're at the bar or in a booth. Warm, relaxed atmosphere, some of the best bartenders in SD, and food that is consistent, prepared right, and absolutely delicious. Bar this time with colleagues from out of town. Happy hour. Exceptional. Thanks To the team here for never letting me down. If you skip dessert you're missing a major reason this place is so well loved. It's not just the steaks.
Came back here and I had THE best birthday dinner. Our server Omar was so accommodating and made sure to let us know all the specials. He was patient with my talkative group and brought everything out at the perfect timing. Also shout out to the manager or GM that helped my mom suprise me with a cake she said you were super kind and easy to work with. Also the bottle of wine sent to my table from my BFF in Texas! I couldn't have asked for a better birthday, thank you!!
Cowboy Star came highly recommended by my friend who lives in Little Italy and knows the San Diego food scene well and it absolutely lived up to the hype. Service was excellent from start to finish: attentive, knowledgeable, and well-paced without feeling rushed. They have a strong wine selection that pairs beautifully with the menu, and everything I ordered was delicious and cooked perfectly. As expected for an upscale steakhouse, it is on the pricey side, but the quality, execution, and overall experience justify it. The ambiance is cool and energetic, and the restaurant was packed, which says a lot. Overall, a great steakhouse experience and definitely one I'll be returning to.
Came here for Christmas eve dinner and it was so cute and cozy, and food was good. We got to try steak with creamy horseradish sauce, beets, french onion soup, as well as cocktails. I forgot the names, but cocktails were sweet and good. I really liked the beets, it came with some sort of cream, I think mascarpone, it was so yummy! Also french onion soup was so rich and good. Steak was huge and I liked it came with sides.
I've dined at Cowboy Star on a couple special occasions and the service is always on point and very personable. The quality of the steak is top notch and I love the dim ambience that steakhouses share. Most recently I stopped in for happy hour and was not disappointed. I grabbed the last seat at the bar. I ordered the potato skins and the beef skewers. The skewers were by far my favorite during happy hour. They also serve a mean C-stat Old Fashioned. If you haven't given them a try, you should!

I wanted more and more and still think about them. I was let down by the Brussels they were dry and needed a sweet chili drizzle or even some kind of balsamic reduction. I asked our server and they couldnt accommodate me. It would have made this dinner. I also felt my brussels were a little burnt. I still won't hesitate to come back. There are plenty of other dishes I would love to try. Ohh I forgot all anout the rolls. They were fantastic!!! I had to stop myself before I couldnt eat anymore. Soo soft and buttery.
Cowboy Star is one of the best steakhouse experiences in San Diego. The atmosphere is intimate and polished without feeling stuffy, and the service is attentive and seamless. Steaks are cooked perfectly, the sides are rich and shareable, and the French onion soup is genuinely the best I've ever had, deeply flavorful and perfectly balanced. Solid cocktail and wine options round out the experience. Consistently excellent and always worth it.
So much cow! We ordered the 40oz porterhouse for two, and I think it should really be advertised for four. We stuffed ourselves and still ended up taking the bone and one piece home. Definitely could have been more comfortable eating less of it. It was cooked perfectly and very salty as a steak should be. Steaks come with a side of mashed potatoes and green beans, and they were good and super buttery. We also got the bread service, Caesar salad, and side of mushrooms. All were good. At this point, I was stuffed to the brim and skipped dessert even though I had originally planned on it. Drinks were hit or miss. The Rancher's Elixir was fantastic. Whiskey Sour and Aloha Cowboy were meh. Service was attentive. They checked on us frequently. Parking on metered street spots weren't an issue early on a Saturday night.
We came here to celebrate my son's graduation. We had reservations at 7 and arrived a little early. We were lead inside to a large booth. We were given drink menus, regular menus, and the specials. My son ordered the prairie blossom which was basically a floral margarita. My husband got a sangria and my mother-in-law got a glass of cabernet sauvignon. The prairie blossom was sweeter than the usual margarita. The sangria was fruity and dry. My mother-in-law liked her wine which went well with the steak she ordered. My son and mother-in-law both ordered the special aged rib eye. I got the mussels and my daughter got the Mac and cheese. My husband also got a rib eye steak but from the regular menu. The beef was cooked to a perfect medium rare. They were tender and full of flavor. The dry aged just had a bigger beef flavor. My mussels were good and plentiful. Unfortunately, a few of them had sand which made it slightly unpleasant. Another sticking point is having to pay for bread service. It was good but not $10 good. Overall a good meal. read more

We had a great experience overall at Cowboy Star. Our waitress was very kind and had some excellent drink recommendations, although we didn't see her much throughout the evening. Thankfully, Ruby really picked up the ball. She was attentive, friendly, and made sure we were taken care of. We started the night with dinner rolls and the wedge salad. Both so good! Loved the heafty piece of bacon that they gave us with the wedge salad. And omg the bread was crazy amazing! Maybe some of the best steakhouse bread I've ever had. It melted in our mouth! For dinner, we had the 21 day-aged ribeye, the 12oz New York strip which included mashed potatoes and green beans which were amazingly seasoned and flavorful. I think I had a allergic reaction to the green beans. They they had some type of nut with them, but they were delicious and I survived lol! We also had a side of macaroni and cheese which was so flavorful and creamy and delicious. It also came with chunky little pieces of bacon, which was a nice touch on the crispy top. Everything we ordered was flavorful and well prepared. My dry aged ribeye was cooked perfectly, but it lacked a bit of flavor, and the chimichurri could have used a touch more salt. One thing worth mentioning is that you have to pay for the bread, but once you taste it, you understand why. It's seriously delicious and absolutely worth it. The only real disappointment was that we were celebrating a birthday, and unlike most high end restaurants, there was no complimentary dessert. We were charged for it instead for the Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding which was delicious. It's not a dealbreaker, but a small gesture like that goes a long way. Overall, great food, wonderful service (especially thanks to Ruby), and a warm atmosphere. We'd definitely come back. read more

It has been quite some time since I've been here. the Bar is no longer in a separated room and it's open to the rest of the restaurant (looks great!). the bartop seating was packed but there were some low seats available. i pulled up and a server brought me a menu. I ordered the Margarita (x2) and the steak skewers. perfect marg (which is why i ordered a 2nd one) skewers were delish and honestly enough food for me but i had more time to kill and wanted to try a second item. i opted for the deviled eggs which were amazing! i really wanted to try the potato skins..i need to come with a friend so i can share some food !!! read more
Cowboy Star has 4.3 stars for a reason! This place is amazing. From the ambiance, service, and food, everything was top notch! We went for a girlfriend's birthday and had the best time. Highly recommend the charcuterie and mussels to start! We also got some bone marrow for the table which is also a must!! All of the steaks we got were delicious, as well as the salmon! Mac and cheese as a side was killer as well. Overall truly an immaculate experience and highly recommend for a date night, girls night, or celebration! read more

Service was really good, we enjoyed talking with our server. Dry aged ribeye was solid. It was different whereas it felt really light compared to other ribeyes but still good. Banana pudding was delicious. Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes were heavenly. Vibes were cute with dim lights. read more
Love the atmosphere and service here AND the food is spectacular. Recently came for a birthday dinner. Started out with some fantastic blue cheese stuffed olive martinis. Had to pair those with some oysters- fresh and nice presentation. Bread service delightful. Moved onto the wedge salad- BACON. We all had different cuts of steak- Filet, NY Strip, and Ribeye. All cooked to perfection with excellent flavor. What I love about this steakhouse is all of the steaks come with sides, we had asparagus and mashed potatoes. We did have to add on a few sauces and horseradish. We did also have a bean and corn dish that was amazing. I loved that they had a Coravin section of their wine menu so I had to grab my favorite Pinot Noir. Espresso martinis for dessert along with a knock your socks off banana pudding. Everything was amazing and we WILL be back. read more
The sun is shining brightly and there is a line to get in. Inside the lights are low. The classic steakhouse atmosphere. I see steaks in a refrigerated case for purchase. Lovely meat. Friendly hostess guides us to our table. There are many attractive options on the menu but steak is what I'm here for. Fries were not crunchy but the flavor was amazing. Texture was soft and fluffy. 14oz ribeye steak from double r ranch was aged 21 days. I found it tender and juicy. Cooked medium as requested. Lightly seasoned with salt and some butter the flavor was delicious. Cowboy Star is one of my favorite spots to get a steak. Service was excellent. The team kept our drinks filled and our used dishes were promptly taken away. Server was very knowledgeable. read more

Visited here for an early dinner and my continued birthday celebration month! I always look forward to my meals here as I know service will be impeccable, the food phenomenal and the ambiance friendly and intimate. This meal I chose the filet mignon accompanied by mashed potatoes, veggie along with a dark beer. Absolutely melt in your mouth delicious! Chocolate chip bread pudding was a must for dessert. I await my next meal experience with bated breath. read more

If you're looking for a classic steak house, look no further. From its leather seats, wooden architecture, mood lighting, and old school western movie posters, Cowboy Star delivers not just on food but also on ambiance. They have a great happy hour food and drink menu during the weekdays from 3-6, perfect for those that want to try out several things. Happy hour food was flavorful and filling. The place does get busy, so come early. If sitting at the bar, look up and check out their rotating ceiling liquor shelf. read more

My wife and I absolutely loved our experience at Cowboy Star. First, I'm a huge fan of steak. My go to is Filet Mignon. And their steak is phenomenal. It was tender, flavorful and cooked to perfection. My wife ordered the Sautéed Scallops and Clams, which was delicious as well. We had the Wood-fired Mussels for an appetizer, which was surprisingly amazing. We never would have thought to pair mussels and chorizo together, but it worked to perfect. The cocktails were delicious as well. The place has great ambiance. The service was impeccable. It's a bit pricey, but well worth it! We left full and satisfied! read more
Had the chance to dine here for a birthday and really enjoyed the service and the food. The location is in downtown sd but not on a busy street so be very attentive to time if you have a reservation because you will have to find parking on the street or those paid parking lots near the restaurant. We were a few minutes late so they did call to see if we were on the way to the restaurant. Once we arrived, mind you it was on a Saturday night so it was very busy, I recommend to book a reservation. The hostess was very friendly and able to seat us right away to our table. Decor was rustic and restaurant is not very huge. They gave us a menu that said happy birthday! Our server was great, always checked on us and gave us new silverware for every dish we got. The bread service was fluffy and warm once it arrived to the table. Heirloom tomatoes and steak tartare for apps was amazing so recommend if you want appetizers. Then corn soup was alright and Caesar salad is good for 2 people in my opinion. The mains we got the wagyu skirt steak - 100/10 and the filet migon 10/10. Mac&cheese and the sautéed mushrooms are great sides. Chocolate chip bread pudding 10/10 read more
The ambiance was lovely, a modern rustic decor with mood lighting on the restaurant side. The booths were nice and tall so they actually buffered the noise in the room well. Jodi was our server and she did everything we'd hope for, including keeping our wine bottle poured. I was a bit confused though as to the flow of the menu, the Cold Summer Corn Soup seems out of place when the Amuse Bouche and other menu items are Fall-inspired. We would have preferred a classic French Onion Soup to pair with our Porterhouse. Also, they took the bleu cheese crumble off the menu. Otherwise, we shared a Wedge salad, a tasting of the Ohmi Wagyu, and a Porterhouse steak. A tomahawk would also be a nice addition to the menu. No complaints whatsoever on the main dishes. However, they claimed the Wagyu was a 12 on the BMS (the highest and most marbled), we would say it was maybe an 8. - The higher the number the more buttery it is going to taste back the fats will sear the meat by itself without the help of additional butter in the pan. Which they said they normally add butter, salt and pepper... we declined the butter and pepper because it should not be needed. Also, a 12 wouldn't have the thicker fat vein running through it (see photo). We would not get the Wagyu here again. read more
I recently visited Cowboy Star with friends downtown. Parking can be a headache in the area, but we were lucky enough to find a great spot nearby. We had a reservation but were seated in the back corner, which felt a bit tucked away. I think the open area near the bar has a much better atmosphere and would've made the experience feel livelier. Service was also on the slower side--it took quite a while for our entrées to arrive, which was a bit disappointing. On the food side, the steak was very good--cooked well and full of flavor. The mashed potatoes that came with it, however, fell short; they tasted a bit like they were from a box, which was surprising for a place of this caliber. The rolls were actually quite good, but the drinks were just okay and didn't really stand out. Overall, I'd say Cowboy Star delivers on steak but has room for improvement with service, seating, and sides. It's worth trying, but I'd go in with adjusted expectations. read more
Came here for dinner with my mom and brother. He has consistently said Cowboy Star served him the best steaks ever and he comes here annually with his company. So I was excited. Service was very friendly and attentive without being overly intrusive. A little weird but sometime in the middle of our meal we had a new server. Shift change, break, or something? But no "Hi, I am leaving for a break but so-n-so will now take care of you. It has been pleasure" Considering the price you pay it feels like a lack of etiquette. Drinks: I ordered the CS Old Fashioned which is made with Rittenhouse Rye though you could upgrade to Buffalo Trace per the menu, was strong and well-balanced. We did not order any appetizers or bread service as we planned to order a few side dishes and were also informed that all steaks would come with mash potato and green beans. Our plates came out timely in about 20 minutes (we were told to expect 30 minutes actually). Side dishes: Brussels with bacon was incredible with significant chunks of bacon. Glazed carrots provided a sweet balance to the salt/savory Brussels. Both were great. Mom ordered the poached halibut which came with a risotto, charred snap peas, and a champagne foam. Great presentation. She said she enjoyed it. My brother and I ordered the 21 day aged 14 oz ribeye cooked medium. Both came out at the correct doneness. Do I want to say it is the best steak I have ever had? No. Not the worst for sure but it didn't make me want to say I will forever forsake the competition either. Perhaps if I had ordered a filet or Wagyu??? Dessert: We were kind of full but the Chocolate Bread Pudding is highly recommended so we got one to share and it was excellent. Maybe it was hyped too much by my brother. Would I visit again? My so-so experience with the steak makes me doubt it. For the price you pay you would hope that I would come out feeling like this was a fantastic experience I'd want to bring my own family to but I did not. 3.5 stars. read more
Dined here for a birthday celebration on a Friday. We had a reservation at 5pm for a party of 3. We were running about 15min late but I called the restaurant and they were able to accommodate. Make sure to leave plenty of time to find parking. Before our order came out they brought out a small palette opener for all of us. It definitely did open up my taste buds, it was pretty tangy. For starters, we ordered the C-Star Caesar and Summer Corn Soup. The soup was delicious. Full of flavor and definitely one of my highlights. The Caesar salad was just okay. The dressing was a bit watery and had little flavor. I was a bit disappointed by it. We also ordered the Parker house rolls, which is always good. For some reason it didn't hit as good as the first time I had them though. For our entree we ordered two orders of the 14oz ribeye, cooked medium rare. The steaks come with a side of mashed potatoes and broccolini, which they were able to split into two plates for us to share. The steak was cooked perfectly and the portion was more than enough for two of us. The mashed potatoes were creamy and delicious and the broccolini was good too. We also ordered the bone marrow for a side. It was pretty good but looking back on our meal, we would have been okay without it. For dessert we got the chocolate chip bread pudding. It was decadent but not too sweet, I would definitely recommend it. They also brought it out with a candle and birthday message, which was nice. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. Came here for my birthday dinner and Cowboy Star delivered an amazing experience from start to finish. The bone-in ribeye was cooked to perfection -- juicy, flavorful, and paired beautifully with the sides. We started with oysters and steak tartare, and both were excellent: fresh, well-seasoned, and a perfect way to kick off the meal. The front house was very accommodating and we were able to get in a little earlier after a tiring day. 1. Fillet mignon ~ tender good but not memorable 2. Wagyu skirt steak - a tad salty and hard to chew. 3. Foraged mushrooms - good side for the steak 4. Bone marrow - toasted French bread paired well but a bit oily 5. Oysters - sauces were excellent 6. Went to Cowboy Star and had a great dinner. The cocktails were a good mix of strong & sweet. I ordered the ribeye and my girl got the wagyu. The ribeye was rich and flavorful, and the wagyu was super tender and melted in your mouth. The bread came out hot, the mac and cheese had great cheese pulls, the brussels sprouts were a great pairing with our meal. Dessert was banana pudding and the perfect way to end it. Hey, this place is pretty good! We were able to score seats at the bar which was pretty busy on a random Wednesday. I had the scallops and clams, while the hubby had ribeye. Both were delicious! We were told we had to get the mac and cheese which ended up being super yummy! And for dessert we opted for the chocolate chip bread pudding which was an excellent choice! Wow. Honestly wow. I wasn't sure what to expect but I was impressed. Having had steaks at tons of steakhouses in Texas, my bar is pretty high. Cowboy Star met it. We had a large group and everyone left with a great impression. We had a some roasted beets to start, and they were incredible. I ordered a sangria which was pretty good, needed a bit more fruit but it was good. A coworker and I shared the 18oz rib eye. They even split the mashed potatoes and broccolini into separate plates for us which was nice. The table ordered every side except two. Their Mac and cheese was delicious, as were the carrots and mushrooms. We also ordered four desserts and every single one was good. The banana pudding was a favorite. I also really liked the pistachio one. The service was also top notch. Will be looking forward to going back next time I'm in San Diego. read more
I took my husband here for his birthday, and we had an excellent time. Cowboy Starr is known for their wood, roasted steaks, and everything was perfect. From the decor to the service to the tenderness of the steak, it is definitely a place that every steak lover should visit. They were also very accommodating for my little one, where they created a makeshift changing station for me since their default bathroom do not have one. The manager even stood watch to make sure I have complete privacy. You do have to find street parking and I recommend you call ahead to make a reservation. read more

There is parking on the street. But it isn’t very good. It is over priced & I would skip it.

The bar is first come first serve. No reservation is needed. The bar has a happy hour/bar menu from 3:00-5:00, and then offer the full dinner menu after 5:00.

According to their website Happy Hour is Monday through Friday in the bar, 3:00 - 6:00 PM.
Is there outdoor seating available?

What is the dress code?
There isn't any dress code. Some people are casual in jeans and tees while others show up in a suit and tie. It's all accepted.
Can we bring a baby?
You can, I'm sure. But this is not the kind of place you would want to bring a baby. It is not a place for kids at al. While you can can bring a kid or a baby, it is probably not a good idea.
How much is the current corkage fee? I'm seeing different amounts in the posts.
When we were there the end of December we called and asked about bringing our wine (be sure to call to verify they don't have what you want to bring.) if they have the same on their menu you can't bring yours in. The corkage fee was $25.
Do you have highchairs?
I've never seen a highchair here because I have never seen anyone bring their kids.
Do they have gluten free or dairy free options?
