I was really interested in trying this place because I've never had Indonesian food before and I was really impressed with what I got. My friend and I shared the Singapore Laksa and Borneo! I really like the Singapore Laksa because of the type of noodle they used and the flavor of the broth. In my opinion, it was similar to a curry style noodle dish, but it was delicious nonetheless. The Boreno was a typical sautéed noodle dish, but it also tasted good. Both dishes were full of flavor and were portioned well enough to share and keep us full. I definitely want to try other dishes here whenever I come back. The parking wasn't too bad. There is a parking garage nearby or a small shopping center. Both a short walk from the restaurant. The people were nice and the service was about average. We waited a little bit longer for the Boreno than the Singapore Laska, but they were both served quickly. An Indonesian friend took me to Borneo, and I was excited to try the foods that this area of the world had to offer. I had ordered the Singapore Laksa Mee, which featured a mild spicy curry coconut milk soup. My friend ordered the Nasi Campur and for the table ordered a fleet of appetizers: roti prata, 5 piece satay, and gado gado. I started the meal trying out the gado gado. I initially enjoyed the savory peanut-like sauce on the salad, but I wasn't quite a fan of the after taste from the mix of cooked and raw vegetables... or maybe it was from the boiled egg. I only had but a small piece of the roti prata, and that was tasty. However, my favorite appetizer was the 5-piece satay. There were only five skewers, but I savored every bite. The online menu mentions there is dipping sauce on the side, but our order did not come with any peanut dipping sauce on the side. My first sip of the Singapore Laksa Mee broth was phenomenal. I was drawn to this dish because of their homemade noodles, and the noodles were indeed good with texture. I could taste the hints of curry in the broth, and I enjoyed all of the sides that were served alongside it. However, I wish the broth was less salty, because I couldn't finish drinking the broth. I have a bad habit of drinking all of my soup broth, and I found this to be difficult with the dish. I hope you like spicy because everything here has a little heat. But don't worry, it's nothing normal people can't handle - it just adds more flavor to the food. Let's be honest here, no one gets Chicken Sate for the chicken. Borneo's sweet and savory peanut sauce is right on so lay it on thick. I love a good Laksa, and this soup is nice, but get it with something other than egg noodles. My favorite dish in any country is probably flat rice noodles, stir fried with a soy-based sauce. The Borneo Style at Borneo is great. Roti Prata is bread and curry, simple and simply my favorite thing. Nasi Lemak is my other fave, with chunks of fried chicken and a spicy paste of peanut and tiny salty anchovies that will set you salivating. That coconut rice is the real deal. Wish i could give 0 stars instead of 1. Ordered takeout today. Was told small roti has 2 roti and large has 3, so we ordered 2 orders of large as we wanted 6 total pieces. Also ordered 6 other items. One plate was completely left off the order even though the person taking the order read it back to me. Only got 4 pieces of roti. We did not realize this until we got home and discovered the missing food. Called and the restaurant did not even apologize at all until I said i would be leaving a review on yelp. They told me the small order of roti is 1 piece and large is 2 pieces. Why would I lie about what i was informed about when ordering; I just knew I wanted 6 total pieces. Maybe even my top choice! I went with SIL yesterday.. and EVERYTHING was delicious!! Gado gado, the beef satay with fragrant coconut rice, Singapore laksa, and my freakin favorite of all time-es cendol!! Yes my fellow Indo's, you MUST come here!! I was s little teary eyed, it reminded me so much of Mom (RIP). Only half a mile from my home, walking distance! The atmosphere was relaxed and not crowding, the place full of hungry happy people! I'm born and raised Singaporean, and the Singapore laksa mee is no where close to being authentic, which is by far the most disappointing. Not bad for Malaysian food! Their food is pretty on point for the flavors. The roti came with a good coconut based curry sauce that has a little chili oil for an extra kick. The Singaporean laksa was pretty filling with homemade egg noodles, al dente texture. The egg was cooked way too long that it fell apart. Beside that, the shrimp taste great. I also got the Borneo noodles. The taste was simple but just what I was looking for. The rendang also had good flavors. Could use a little more spice but otherwise, they got the flavors down. A friend recommended this place and it is one of my new local favorites. We each got our own dishes but I got to try a few menu items. My favorites were the laksa and nasi lemak. The laksa was full of flavor and I loved how the egg noodles were so bouncy. The lemak had such tender meat and a special peanut sauce that made the dish. I think about this place a lot - specifically about their laksa and rojak salad. SO delicious and flavorful! I always ask for a tiny container just so I can take the rojak sauce home and dip everything in my fridge into it. Portions are great and prices are really reasonable at around $13 a dish. I've also had their satay, roti, and most of the rice plates which are all very tasty as well! You really can't go wrong with whatever you order! We usually come for dinner on weekends and there is a short wait most of the time like 20-30 minutes but I have driven by and seen that they can get quite busy. Weekdays are usually better and we've gotten seated immediately. They have just indoor seating and the vibe is casual. Their staff is incredibly friendly and so helpful! It's always such a pleasant experience dining here and I've loved taking friends since it's consistently good all around. I am currently on my quest to check out all the restaurants mentioned on the Michelin Guide, and was surprise to see a local restaurant on the list. While Borneo Kalimantan Cuisine has been around for years, I haven't had an opportunity to check them out. So... without further delay... I dragged my family for our weekly foodventure. This is a small restaurant and I don't recommend bringing your extended family. There is a sign in clipboard by the door. Sign in and thou shall be called. I recommend waiting outdoors because it is not cool to stack against one another by the door while the servers tries to bring out food from the kitchen. As of October 2021, indoor dining is available, but they had only 2 servers available when I visited, and service was slow and close to none. I am just thankful I got my order in before the party of 10 seated seconds after me. To be surprise, food came relatively fast. Serving size is smaller than I expected, but the flavors are there. I loved the Roti, but the curry sauce that accompanied it was a little salty. Laksa is a must, and I will be returning to try out the Curry Oxtail in the near future. There aren't that many Indonesian/Malaysian restaurants in the LA area, so this is a great find.. and fortunately it's also not too far from my work location. It was right in the middle of downtown Alhambra, along with several other eateries lined up on the same street. There's a parking garage hidden in the back. The place wasn't too big, and by the time I got there, it was almost filled up. The place was decently clean, and ambience casual. The staff was very friendly and service was fairly prompt. The last time I came here I had the Nasi Lemak and Roti Prata and they arrived within 5 minutes. Both were very flavorful with just the right amount of spice level. Rating: 9.5/10 Delicious homey food at a good price! I've been to Borneo a few times now and can definitely vouch for the yummy food here. The wait can get pretty long if there is a lunch crowd, but if you come at around 1-2PM, you'll be seated right away. Nasi Lemak: 7/10. Actually my least favorite item that I've tried here. I found the rice lacking in coconut flavor, but it had a great sticky texture. I loved the tender and flavorful fried chicken, as well as a very unique curry egg that I've never had before. Overall, the plate was good but not the best item I've had at Borneo. 2. Singapore Laksa: 9.5/10. Delicious rich and salty broth!!!! The noodles are chewy and the perfect texture. The toppings all complement the salty broth well and give you a variety of different things to try. The broth is rich and so tasty with an addicting taste. Highly recommend if you're having trouble deciding what to have because you won't be disappointed! 3. Nasi Campur: 9/10. Delicious rice plate with all great components. Solid option if you're looking to have rice since there's a little bit of everything! The gravy broth has a yummy flavor but does have an interesting thick texture (like a starch-thickened sauce). 4. Hakka Mie: 9.5/10. My personal go-to. I love the medium noodles since they have a great chew and grab the flavor perfectly. I like to spoon a little bit of the soup into the bowl to moisten the noodles a bit for extra slurpability :) So delicious and is a light option! 5. Chicken Satay (no photo attached): 9/10, tender and juicy appetizer! The skewers are a bit small but I think if you're looking to grab an appetizer, this is a tasty choice that has a pleasing peanut taste. I also recommend to ask for the sauce on the side so you can dip the skewers in! Overall, fantastic place to eat with reasonable prices! Love this place! Every dish we got, I was blown away by the depth of the flavor and how distinct everything is. As soon as they place the dish in front of you, you get a whiff of the fragrant aroma from the meal. Everything we ordered was delicious and definitely would order again. We came for lunch and was instantly seated with the place about half full. If you come for dinner though, expect there to be more of a wait. The service was great as well and everybody was nice. Already can't wait to come back! Food: We ordered the Singapore Laksa and the Satay Plate. The Laksa broth was really creamy and you could really taste the distinct coconut flavor in it. We chose rice noodles and these paired so well with the broth. I like that the broth was slightly sweet from the coconut milk and didn't feel too heavy. This is one of their most popular dishes and for good reason. The Satay Plate was also delicious. The chicken was super tender and slid off the skewers easily. The peanut sauce had a lot of flavor without being overpowering. I got the coconut rice but it didn't taste that much different from white rice in my opinion. Come with me to try Indonesian and Malaysian food! This was my first time having it and I was completely blown away. We started off with the Roti prata (2 pieces for $8) which tasted like an Indian naan or Taiwanese green onion pancake but even better, it comes with a spicy curry sauce that is so addicting. It is a little pricey for only 2 pieces, so I'm not sure if we will order this appetizer again. Next was the Nasi curry satay (chicken satay curry rice) ($13) that was seasoned to perfection and hit the spot. Now, I'm a noodle girl, so I had to try their Singapore laksa mee ($13). This coconut curry noodle soup had the perfect kick to it and came loaded with so many toppings like shrimp, fish cake, fried tofu, and a marinated egg. There's not ~ too ~ many Malay restaurants around here so I don't get to eat it very often. But this establishment is the best, even Michelin Star. Everything on the menu is amazing, don't second guess it just order it. I eat Asian food a lot, but not from these 3 particular countries as much... so I wanted to give them some love! * #4 Hokkien style noodles $10.50 came with medium size noodles, chicken mushroom, bbq red pork, marinated egg, and various vegetables. It also came with a side of soup. The bbq red pork was a nice mixture of tender meat and flavorful fat. The fried onions sprinkled on top was a nice addition, especially when it mixed with the sauce and noodles. As good as it was, I feel like the portion was a little bit on the smaller side. * Roti Prata 2pc $7.99 was a bit on the pricer side but very very good. Roti Prata 'is a fried flour based pancake that is cooked over a flat grill. It is served with Indonesian island curry sauce and is from Malaysia and Singapore'. The curry sauce was definitely one of the BEST curries I've ever tasted. I honestly did not expect to love the curry as much as I did. I was surprised to find out it was a vegetarian curry. I've driven past this place soooo many times but it was always on the way to to eat somewhere else and then realizing this was like RIGHT there. The first time I saw the sign, I was just curious what kind of food they offered because the name was so unique to me so obviously I yelped it. The food looked amazing and I was intrigued.... but it wasn't until yesterday I finally got to try their food out. I used Ubereats to get their indo fried rice and an order of their roti that comes with a small curry. The fried rice was sooooo flavorful and delicious. There were a variety of ingredients that went into it like fried chicken, eggs, fried shallots, and a leafy veggie that was kind of bitter. The roti was LAAAAYYYERED!! My niece and I were able to peel each layer and have fun eating it. This picky eater couldn't get enough of it! Should have ordered two just for her! The parking kind of sucks in this area if you want one right by the restaurant, but if you know the area, you know there's a public parking garage around the corner. Trying Borneo for the first time is a memorable experience. I remember the first time I ever tucked into the laksa at Borneo and the mouthful of wonderful flavors I got to experience. The laksa is complex and deep in flavor. The roti prata was phenomenal. In comparison to similar competitors, I would choose Borneo over them any day. With the dearth of Singapore oriented cuisine in Los Angeles, finding that Borneo Eatery has some Singaporean classics was great! I decided to enjoy some laksa with egg noodles. This is not as spicy compared to the laksa I had in Singapore, but it was really tasty nonetheless. Service was quick and to the point, with no wait to be seated. Most parties should be seated without much wait unless you do have a lot of people. The good: I went to Kuala Lumpur a few years ago and was really excited to see a restaurant cater to all of the delicious cuisines found in that city. I tried the flat rice noodle chicken laksa with with fish cake, tofu, egg, bean sprout, green onion and shallots. I liked how rich it was and how it wasn't too salty. The spice was mild. I ordered to go so they separated the noodles from the broth which prevented my noodles from expanding and soaking up all of the soup. Their menu offers so many great and unique dishes that you cannot find in many other restaurants. The prices were fair. They also have desserts. The bad: It would have been nice if there was a separate order and order pick-up line to quicken the process of pick-up orders. I don't know if it is true but I heard from a colleague that there is a lot of MSG in a lot of their dishes. I am not against MSG because it adds great flavor to a lot of great Asian dishes and FDA deems it as generally safe but it does leave you thirsty afterward and it does make a savory dish pretty sweet (for those who don't like sweetness in their savory dishes). The interesting: I look forward to coming back and trying the nasi lemak, teh tarik (pulled milk tea) and roti. I haven't had that dish since I last went to Malaysia! There's a fried egg and tofu on the side and I much prefer the tofu over the egg. The best part of this dish was the fried peanut sauce. I wasn't sure what it was or how to eat it so I asked the server. He said it was something to which I forgot but there's peanuts, chili and tiny anchovies all fried very crispy.
