    Hainan Chicken Rice
    Jeanne W.

Placed a phone order for pick up. Everything was ready within minutes. Still one of my favorite restaurants. I try to get food there whenever I am in the area. Hainan Chicken Rice is one of my go-to meals. I always order an extra ginger sauce. Of course, portion size has been going down through the years and price is up but this is still my favorite here. The dark soy sauce, ginger sauce, and hot sauce were good accompaniments for the poached chicken. The rice had a delicious flavor from the chicken broth used during preparation. This is still the exemplary Hainan Chicken Rice that I use to compare others to. Shrimp Rolls came nine to an order. They were crispy with a good tasting filling and a mild spicy sauce. Great for sharing. My other favorite item is the Curry Beef Tendon Brisket. Their Malaysian style curry sauce is slightly lighter in color than before but still tasted the same. There were plenty of tender, gelatinous beef tendons in the curry and it was served with steamed rice topped with caramelized onions. The onions had a good flavor from the caramelization. Service was very polite and efficient. The dedicated parking lot across the street from the restaurant is very convenient.

Came during lunch time and a great slot. It was packed to the brim already but a couple tables had just wrapped up so we were seated quickly even after filling out the sign in sheet being 4th in line (: My mom and auntie wanted to try this spot and they are def critical and surprisingly they liked it! Loved the chicken broth as there is a small hint of ginsing herb in it. Very light and clean broth. The hainan chicken was hitting as always and I love love the ginger and orange sauce they have. Def worth stopping by if one is craving a relatively clean and healthy meal.

Savoy Kitchen is a regular stop for us whenever we visit Southern CA from our home in the Bay Area. We love the Hainan chicken and the lemon ice tea. Our favorite team member is Vianne. Can't wait for our next visit.

Amazing Hainan Chicken (all dark meat). Other dishes were okay. Got the mushroom cream pasta which was decent but the duck pizza seemed very whatever. Almost tasted like a frozen pizza that was doctored up. They give you Fresh bread. We dined in but very limited seating so we had to sit outside. Service was fast.

It's been some time since we've frequented Savoy, so it was nice to be back. We stopped by after the gym and were seated right away, which was a great start to the visit. We ordered the Beef Curry with Rice and the Hainan Chicken with Dark Meat, Rice & Salad. The beef curry was rich, savory, and comforting, while the Hainan chicken was tender and flavorful. Both dishes made for a satisfying post-gym meal. Overall, it was great to return to an old favorite. Good food, quick seating, and a familiar experience that brought back some memories.

Savoy Kitchen is probably one of the most well known hole in the wall gems of outskirts LA. It's been around since the early 1980s. My parents have been coming here since their hey days, and I apparently came here with them as a baby. Quality and authenticity of the food here is so good. First of all, we came about 40 minutes before closing. They were about to seat us outside, but then the waiter noticed that we had two babies int he party. He was so nice. As soon as he saw that, he told the restaurant we couldn't sit outside, that we should be inside because it was cold and dark out. He earned major kudos from my mom with that thoughtful gesture. We ordered 2 orders of the hainan chicken with rice, beef curry, fish with cream sauce and pasta, and duck pasta. Everything was amazing. The hainan chicken rice was flavorful and perfectly cooked. The chicken was tender and juicy. It was a clear favorite in the group. The beef curry was filled with umami, and the beef was braised so tender. The beef curry was my dad's and my favorite. My husband and daughters enjoyed the duck pasta the most. It had the essence of a spaghetti, which the little girls loved, but the uniqueness of duck which my husband loved. My mom really liked the fish in cream sauce. No fuss or frills, just delicious food and fast service. If I lived nearby, we'd come much more often!

Made it here before the crowds on Memorial Day. Arrived at ~11:30 am and was seated at the counter which was perfect. We had the classic Hainan Chicken Rice $14.50, dark meat only $2 upcharge and the smoked duck pizza $14.95. The food had good flavor. It is what you expect from Hainan Chicken Rice. My friend commented that barbecue sauce would have gone well with her smoked duck pizza. Service is quick. The staff was busy with indoor and outdoor tables. Indoor seating is limited. There is more outdoor seating. However, the restaurant does a substantial amount of takeout orders. That's the way to go!

I haven't been here since 2011 and I am glad I came back. It has been such a big change since the last time I tried Hainan chicken dish. There's a lot more seating which is at the patio area compared to back then and definitely a change in decor and interior design. There are more staff who each help with ordering and clean up, we came before the dinner rush and sat inside which can only fit 2-3 per table. We ordered the hainan chicken with rice, creamy fish pasta, and shrimp spring rolls. I loved the spring rolls, crispy and savory a little but if sweet with the sauce. There's Hainan chicken we got dark meat which is $1 extra, looks a lot smaller than expected compared to the rice which was 3/4 the dish. There's best part of the meal was the creamy fish pasta, cheesy and creamy full of mushrooms and fish fillet. I think it was amazing, but not for those lactose intolerant. They had a private restroom available which the key is near the cashier counter and the restroom is located in the back of the building around the alley. Very small bathroom, the size of a closet. Overall, it was great, the place is busy as ever and would like to come back to try their other dishes as well.

Wow, how long has it been. I used to come here all the time, Unfortunately a few things changed. The amount of chicken is reduced, and it's no more refils on the ice tea. Service is still good, the staff is quick the food comes out really quick. Seating is limited, but it's not as packed as it used to be. We got the classic hainan chicken rice it's very good and tasted the same as 10 years ago. ( Feels like less chicken though) Baked white fish fillet with pasta, this is so creamy and thick. Beware of food coma, I took a nap when I got home.

A very popular and busy restaurant in the SGV area. It's a cute but small place with minimal indoor seating. Luckily they have decent outdoor seating. It is by far the best Hainan chicken place to this day. The chicken is tender and never dry. Their sauces are A.Mazing, especially the ginger sauce. This time I tried the Roasted Cornish Hen. It was good and well portioned. The Hen wad nicely crispy on the outside. Highly recommend!

Been coming here since the early 90s when they were located across the street in a stand alone building. One of the best Southeast Asia comfort food around. Just love the Hainan Chicken rice and beef stew curry rice. The aroma and flavor instantly bring me back to my high school days. Friendly and efficient staff make take out a breeze.

I had heard great things about this place but unfortunately I thought everything that I ate here was very okay. The hainan chicken and rice was very bland and definitely needed to be dipped/mixed with the sauces provided. The mushroom pasta was watery. The duck pizza gave frozen pizza vibes. Service was quick and it was nice that they gave us bread (same type of bread as the pizza dough though). Casual ambiance with outside seating. Nothing was terrible, I've just had better versions of each dish at other places.

Their specialty is Hainan chicken rice, and that's what everyone needs to order first. Very consistent, the rice is flavorful and meat tender. Great service, too - they come around with sauce refills. We like the escargots as well. They have pizza and pasta plus curry also. Always nice to sit outside on the shady patio since inside is very small. Just park on the street and walk in. A great casual diner!

What's the difference between Curry Beef and Curry Beef Stew?

Can I call ahead of time for take out?

    Yes

    Do they take reservations?

No, you have to write your name on the paper outside (waiting list) and make sure all of your party is there when they call your name. The place has limited seats and table. That's why they don't do reservations. My suggestion, go there when not in…

Is there an option to pay extra for extra meat?

Yes, u can pay additional for an order for an extra meat.

Is it safe for someone with a peanut allergy?

I would called them and ask.

Do they still sell only the scallion oil in 8 oz jars?

I'm not sure, but as of now they are operating as the usual.

Is the Hianan Chicken they serve Halal?

    Taiwanese style rice chicken

    Do you have brown rice?

No. They have their chicken broth rice.

Do they do dine in today?

Not yet and only seating outside on the patio

Are there free refills for the lemon tea?

Not anymore! They give a larger cup then before though. And it's pre-sweetened. You can't add the syrup yourself too.

What is a popular dish that you recommend for a first-timer?

    Hianan Chicken!

    Is there dine in?

    There is outdoor dining

    Still cash only?

They take credit cards there but $15 minimum

Are you open for indoor/ outdoor dine in?

Yes, only outdoor patio dining as of today Jan 11, 2022.

Is indoor/patio dining open at long last?

I was there this week and the patio area with tables was open. There was no indoor dining.

Open for dine in/ patio dining already?

When I was there, there were NO dine in available, but there are benches outside, mostly for people waiting for their order. No table to dine outside.

Is the patio seating open now? (Update Oct)

    No it isn't

Was the Chile sauce for the hainan chicken recently changed? I just picked up order today and sauce seems a bit more diluted/pale than usual and less red. Tasted a little off.

Really I didn't went there for awhile so I not sure 👍👍

Is their patio open for dine in?

    No, it's not open.

    Are they open for dine-in?

Not yet! Open for take out only still (:

Grilled Cabbage with Bagna Cauda - I do like a good cabbage dish, but the cabbage was under charred, way too greasy, & lacked acidity. After finishing the half portion of cabbage, it left an unpleasant after taste. Not a well balanced dish at all. Not my favorite dish. Maybe we should've gotten a simple salad instead. Dan Dan Campanelle - the dish came warm not hot. Good flavors and the Campanelle had a good chew, but not an exceptional dish. Hainan Fish Rice - I was so looking forward to this dish. The fish was cooked perfectly, but again lacking balance. The ginger oil is muted and purely decorative, lacking the sharp, sinus-clearing bite needed to wake up the dish. Without the bright, raw punch of ginger and chili, the dish tastes heavy and one-dimensional. I just wished there were more flavors and not just the taste of oil with each bite of fish and ginger. Good ingredients used, but just too heavy on the oil, too light on the aromatics. We didn't fully enjoy our meal as much as we would've liked. We might come back and try the brunch some day.
