Savoy Kitchen is probably one of the most well known hole in the wall gems of outskirts LA. It's been around since the early 1980s. My parents have been coming here since their hey days, and I apparently came here with them as a baby. Quality and authenticity of the food here is so good. First of all, we came about 40 minutes before closing. They were about to seat us outside, but then the waiter noticed that we had two babies int he party. He was so nice. As soon as he saw that, he told the restaurant we couldn't sit outside, that we should be inside because it was cold and dark out. He earned major kudos from my mom with that thoughtful gesture. We ordered 2 orders of the hainan chicken with rice, beef curry, fish with cream sauce and pasta, and duck pasta. Everything was amazing. The hainan chicken rice was flavorful and perfectly cooked. The chicken was tender and juicy. It was a clear favorite in the group. The beef curry was filled with umami, and the beef was braised so tender. The beef curry was my dad's and my favorite. My husband and daughters enjoyed the duck pasta the most. It had the essence of a spaghetti, which the little girls loved, but the uniqueness of duck which my husband loved. Made it here before the crowds on Memorial Day. Arrived at ~11:30 am and was seated at the counter which was perfect. We had the classic Hainan Chicken Rice $14.50, dark meat only $2 upcharge and the smoked duck pizza $14.95. The food had good flavor. It is what you expect from Hainan Chicken Rice. My friend commented that barbecue sauce would have gone well with her smoked duck pizza. Service is quick. The staff was busy with indoor and outdoor tables. Indoor seating is limited. I haven't been here since 2011 and I am glad I came back. It has been such a big change since the last time I tried Hainan chicken dish. There's a lot more seating which is at the patio area compared to back then and definitely a change in decor and interior design. There are more staff who each help with ordering and clean up, we came before the dinner rush and sat inside which can only fit 2-3 per table. We ordered the hainan chicken with rice, creamy fish pasta, and shrimp spring rolls. I loved the spring rolls, crispy and savory a little but if sweet with the sauce. There's Hainan chicken we got dark meat which is $1 extra, looks a lot smaller than expected compared to the rice which was 3/4 the dish. There's best part of the meal was the creamy fish pasta, cheesy and creamy full of mushrooms and fish fillet. I think it was amazing, but not for those lactose intolerant. They had a private restroom available which the key is near the cashier counter and the restroom is located in the back of the building around the alley. Very small bathroom, the size of a closet. Wow, how long has it been. I used to come here all the time, Unfortunately a few things changed. The amount of chicken is reduced, and it's no more refils on the ice tea. Service is still good, the staff is quick the food comes out really quick. Seating is limited, but it's not as packed as it used to be. A very popular and busy restaurant in the SGV area. It's a cute but small place with minimal indoor seating. Luckily they have decent outdoor seating. The only complaint I have for Savoy is the seating but that is not enough to remove a star. I refuse to judge a place negatively simply because they are so good at what they do, they run out of seating. Parking is easy enough and plentiful if you use the neighborhood but be mindful of pedestrians. You can see school kids walking around during the weekday. The food is where this place deserves my respect. I'll have to come back to taste the rest of the menu but the three I got were delicious. Roasted Cornish Hen: crispy and savory. The meat is a little dry but it goes well with the three dipping sauces they provide as well as the moist seasoned rice that it comes with. It may be a bit dry for some people but that's the riddle of the Cornish hen, it's quite difficult to have it be moist AND crispy. Baked Escargot with Herbed Butter went very nicely with the bread it was paired with. The slight sweetness of the bread coupled with the herbaceous butter and snail made for a decadent bite every time. I'd love there to be more butter so that it doesn't run out before the bread does. Baked White Fish Filet was moist and delicate in flavor. You get a choice for the sauce: tomato, cheese, or cream. We chose cream and it worked very well. Both the cream and the fish were delicate enough but still presented their own flavors. Will definitely come back. Service is quick. You write your name and they try to seat you ASAP. I know Savoy Kitchen has a loyal following, and I can understand why many people enjoy it. But having grown up eating Hainanese Chicken Rice and trying versions of it across East Asia, I have very high standards for it. So I came away thinking the chicken rice here was simply okay - not bad, but not particularly memorable either. The chicken itself was decent, but mine came out slightly overcooked. As a result, it lost some of the tenderness and velvety texture that defines truly great Hainanese chicken. The dryness also muted some of the natural flavor that should come through in the poached chicken. The rice was probably the biggest disappointment for me. Great Hainanese chicken rice should have a rich aroma from chicken stock, garlic, ginger, and rendered fat, with each grain distinct and flavorful on its own. Here, the rice felt a bit clumpy and lacked the deep, savory fragrance and chicken essence that elevate the dish. As for the condiments, they were adequate but unremarkable. The soy sauce and ginger sauce did their job of complementing the chicken, but neither stood out. The chili sauce had some heat and acidity. Still, it lacked the brightness and complexity that can really tie the entire plate together. Overall, nothing about the meal was bad. Boneless chicken, by the way, so non-Canto friendly, and you saw that with the mosaic of people coming in to pick up an order. Me too, planning to pick up 2 orders before making my way Irvine, driving fast, faces pass, and I'm southbound. Jiving like Terry Crews. OK, maybe not "driving fast". This is LA, after all. But then the daily special menu caught my eye. It's Thursday. Chicken ala King, the chicken Al Fredo of Hong Kong, the one white sauce Western dish that HongKongers think of. It's fine. You have a job, and you're not here as often as you wish. Trigger pulled. And you're not the thermopile that you think you are anymore. Trigger pulled on the large chrysanthemum tea. And boy, do I NOT regret that decision. The flavors were on point, just like how it used to be in HK! The richness of the butter worked well with the flavor of the chicken. I don't feel as bad as enjoying the butter and cheeese combo that is Al Fredo but that's probably a bias I have. (The easiest place to get this in HK is actually KFC... But the execution is also pepper heavy there is no taste semblance to the original dish...) The tea is floral, sweet with a slight bitter aftertaste from being a little over brewed if your standard is Vita, but absolutely perfect for the heatwave. Service was great too. The boss lady smiled but was also very sharp. Got the tea immediately, no fuss about the ice, no hesitation and ready to switch when I asked if the adjacent container is milk tea. It's not. It's THEIR cappuchino. By the way, if you noticed the 3 veggie paintings on their wall, here's the irony... I'm pretty sure there's no leeks, carrots, or garlic used in making chicken rice. The yellow of the walls work well though, working in step with the sunset hues, and a far cry from the no-frills hospitial-wite walls of so many other Cantonese mom-n-pops. Worth the stop if you're in the area for some good hainan chicken! This is located right in the heart Alhambra near other great food spots. They have their own parking lot so nothing to worry about parking. There's not much seating inside so you'll probably have to eat at their patio, which is decorated quite well with green bushes. Their menu is pretty simple for the most part. Definitely order their hainan chicken. The rice was nice and buttery and their hainan chicken was juicy and tender. I would have loved it more if it came with pickled veggies and chicken soup. We also ordered the shrimp rolls for our appetizer and it was fried well, pretty tasty. However, the duck pizza was a miss... the dough was a bit raw and the cheese wasn't melted well. Also, the duck had a weird gamey taste. The service can be a miss but theyre working hard. They can get really busy on the weekends so just be prepared. Fyi... they do take credit card. For bathrooms, you would need to ask for the key inside. At the end, this deserves 4 stars. The Hainan chicken is still good, although the portion of chicken does seem a little on the small side now and the sauces are okay. There are other items like the seafood pasta and even the pizza that look really good. Didn't get those this time but I saw others order things besides the chicken and I genuinely want to try them. This place has always been busy, but we didn't have too much of a wait for a Friday night and sat at the counter. I love their chili sauce and ginger and don't mind paying the extra 50cent per sauce for to go order. Anytime I can, I would dine in here as the taste is better and I can ask for more sauces. We usually order some for to go too for my kids lunch at school. Glad that for the past few years, they added more parking spaces just across the street from the restaurant. Savoy was such a pleasant surprise. I got the Hainan chicken with just dark meat and it was juicy and flavorful. The sauces were perfect and the rice had that classic aroma and texture that tied everything together. I also tried the duck pasta and escargot. The duck was a little dry but I enjoyed the smoky taste and the pasta sauce was rich and savory. The escargot was delicious too. One of my go-to lunch places for Hainan Chicken! Interior is a bit small but i always order to-go from here. Call beforehand and they'll have your food ready very quickly. Chicken that is included is dark meat. Rice is a type of chicken flavored rice. It also comes with 3 sauces -- a ginger scallion oil, sweet dark soy sauce, and a chili sauce. My favorite is the soy sauce. Note if you want extra sauce it's an extra $0.50. I do wish it came with just a little bit more meat since I was left with a bit of extra rice at the end of the meal.
