This place has been on my wishlist for quite some time, and I was so excited to finally try it out with a friend recently. I used to always drive by and see a gigantic crowd waiting outside, so when we came on a Tuesday for lunch, I made sure to add myself to the Yelp waitlist while I was driving over. Once I arrived, it was only about a 15-minute wait, which wasn't bad at all. Between the two of us, we tried a few different items: - Roti Canai (5/5): The curry sauce was delectable, and the roti itself was so light, airy, and flaky. It was the perfect appetizer to get our meal started. - Nasi Lemak with Curry Beef (5/5): The beef was incredibly tender and the curry sauce was delicious. Just a warning: that little dollop of chili paste on the side is pretty spicy. You've been warned! It also comes plated with a sliced egg, sliced cucumbers, and rice. - Char Kway Teow (4/5): Packed with tons of bean sprouts, lap cheong sausage, and fish cake. The noodles were super light, tender, and cooked perfectly. - Kaya Toast (4/5): This was good, but I didn't realize that the egg dip was a separate item. They told us it would've taken another 10 minutes to make, so we just ate the toast by itself this time around. Still good and loved the butter and jam sandwiched inside of it. I already know I need to make a trip back here because literally all the tables around us were ordering the Hainan chicken. I love Hainan chicken, so that is a total must for next time. I also want to make sure I get the proper Kaya toast experience with the egg dip. Overall, I loved everything we had and will definitely be back!

I've never really had Malaysian food before, so we got in line for Ipoh and were super glad we did! Being on the Michelin Gourmand is no joke, and each dish had a wealth of decadence, especially their Kaya Toast (get it with butter!$ We also got their stir fry flat noodles in gravy, which is dine-in only, and it's a combination of Vietnamese chao, egg drop soup and Thai Pad See Ew - overall, extremely delicious and something that I've truly never had in such a combination. Must try! The Roti with Chicken Curry was also good - definitely pairs well together. Spacious indoors and outdoors, and make sure you get in early! There's always a line during the weekend :)

We were here for lunch on a Sunday. We got there around 11:30am and there was a long line of customers already. We immediately put ourselves on their online wait-list as we looked for parking. It was a 40 min wait already. We found parking easily behind the building and sat in our car until we had a notification text to come check in with the hostess. We checked in and was told to wait outside until called. We waited for about 10 minutes before we were seated. Highly recommend that you use the online wait-list as your driving there! We were a party of two and was seated at a small table inside. It was busy but service was quick. We ordered the roti canai as our appetizer. It came out very hot so be careful. The roti was so fluffy and chewy. Yum! And the curry dip was delicious. We also ordered their two specials, the Singapore laksa curry noodle soup and the Singapore style Hainan chicken entree. Between the two, I prefer the laksa curry noodle soup. It was a very flavorful soup with a coconutty curry filled with two large shrimps, fried tofus, delicate sliced pork bolognas, and two soft boiled eggs halves. The Hainan chicken was nothing special from other restaurants. The rice was sorta dry. But it was still good with the three different sauces that were served with the dish.

Please check in once you get there even if you checked in on yelp. It stated our wait time would be 25 minutes, but we were seated within 15 minutes We went before 4:45 pm so it's a smaller menu and it bit cheaper than dinner but it had all the delicious items we wanted to try. Tea sets come with a free hot coffee or milk tea, extra charge to make it iced. Started with curry fish balls as an appetizer next time I will try the salt and pepper wings. I everything that I tried was delicious, the curry, the Kaya (coconut) toast with butter, the hokkien prawn soup was so flavorful and even the side of shrimp paste went so well with my nasi lemak with chicken curry. I wish I would've asked for a little bit more shrimp paste. I'm not sure if that would've been an extra charge, but I saw others request requesting more. I will return and try other dishes. Everything was so fresh and flavorful.

Ipoh Kopitiam was awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand, meaning they offer high-quality food at moderate prices. We walked in around 10:30 am and were adamantly told they only sell breakfast until 10:45 and and absolutely will not take any lunch orders until 11 am. So, in other words, they will not give you any water or service during those fifteen minutes. I'm not sure if it's a shift change or what, but it was a horrible first impression. They insisted we come in and order breakfast and then order lunch as well. I found that extremely odd as I didn't want to order two meals. And the place wasn't very busy at that time. So we took a stroll around the block and came back around 10:52. They did allow us to sit down, but made sure to only give us the lunch menu. They did offer some water at least. * R3 Nasi Lemak with Chicken Curry $15.95 * T2 Toast with Homemade Kaya & Butter $5.25 * Extra Ginger Sauce for Hainan Chicken 25¢ * R1 Singapore Style Hainan Chicken Rice $15.95 * N3 Singapore Curry Laksa Noodle Soup $15.95 I guess their lunch menu is where they really shine as the establishment really began to fill up and was still going strong when we left despite it being a Tuesday. The food was tasty overall and we enjoyed it. But the initial service really put me off and it's not as if their service improved much more afterwards. Perhaps they are so busy with their regular menu, but morning diners wish to order their more popular dishes that are only available after breakfast. So they need to be rude about setting the expectations upfront when you walk in.

This place was hopping on a Saturday night. We had to wait around 40 minutes for a table after getting on the wait list, but it was worth the wait! We got the roti canai, Singapore-style Hainan chicken rice, nasi lemak with chicken curry, laksa, and toast with kaya and butter. Everything was delicious and flavorful. I especially enjoyed the Hainan chicken. The chicken was so juicy and tender and fresh. I also loved the roti canai. Just buttery, pillowy goodness. The Kaya toast seemed like a simple dessert. It consisted of toasted bread with kaya (a coconut jam) and squares of butter. But it was well-executed and a scrumptious, indulgent treat. The portions were also generous, and by the end of our meal, we were stuffed. Service was quick and friendly. Our server was kind enough to let us know that the milk tea comes with complimentary refills, and he was quick with them.

It was okay, but not for me. It's a pretty popular place so there is definitely a market for it, but my westernized palette did not agree. I came here to try Hainan Chicken for the first (and last time.) Cold chicken with bumpy skin left on just isn't for me, but it might be for you! I thought the saving grace would be the bread, but even that was slightly disappointing. The roti tasted like it was bathed in old cooking grease. I wish I had a more glowing review, but the Hainan chicken was too adventurous for me. Would not recommend the wait, there are more appetizing places to try.

Ordered food togo and it took about 17-18 minutes for it to be done. It was during dinner so it was busy. The chicken wing was crispy and juicy. Not too salty either You cant really go wrong with the hainan chicnese since its their specialty but the rice was a bit too dry for me. I had to drown it in the soy sauce they provided. The red sauce was actually spicy today. Might have changed their recipe since it did look like it had more oil that usual.

Five stars across the board! I first came to Ipoh Kopitiam a couple of months ago and I've been craving it ever since. I can confidently say that this restaurant is in my top 5! Every dish we ordered was delicious. The hainan chicken, the kaya toast, and the roti canai are my go-tos. My friend ordered a fish ball curry dish and enjoyed it. The service is fantastic as well. The staff is friendly and attentive. I also appreciate being able to join the Yelp waitlist ahead of time.

    Roti, loved this. Order it!

Finally decided to brave the crowds...our first time here, party of 2 on a Saturday eveningm Pro tip -- Join the wait list online from home. At dinnertime around 6:30 pm. Worked great. Arrived 8th line...when you arrive check in with the hist, verify if your party is present....10 minutes later, we were seated in the patio. 27 minutes in all. Ambiance patio - 4/5...inside is nice, spacious....I preferred inside bec the patio is along busy and noisy Garfield Avenue...especially just after the big Boyle Heights warehouse fire...but it was surprisingly comfortable and roomy. Inside --5/5 is a nice wall mural and modern Asian Malay decor..but wait was longer, so patio it is. Food -- my 89 yr old mom loved loved loved the SIngapore Hainan chicken. 10/5... It's waaay better than Savoy by a long shot... tender moist chicken both white meat and dark...excellent condiments especially the minced ginger 5/5 beautiful presentation......ordered a side, the roti, fluffy perfection 5/5....I tried the rice vermicelli mee with curry chicken...I asked for the chicken on the side....the mee was crunchy and had cubes of pork fat rhat ate eadily removed...and a tamarind shrimp paste sauce...it was good that everything was separated bec I am allergic to the dried shrimp wonton in the soup, and the shrimp sauce in the mee, but the chicken was excellent and mildly spicy, an Indian flavor type of curry with a mild bitter note...its a good dish 5/5 but I didn't know shrimp was a basic ingredient...if you've got allergies like me, best to ask the server....this wasn't the servers fault, it was mine for nor inquiring. While I couldn't find something, except for the wonderful roti...my mom says she'll be back...and bringing her friends...the Hainan chicken was that good! PRO TIP -- Parking is tricky...difficult to impossible to make a left turn if coming from south on Garfield...best to go around and get the parking lot from the north.l for an easy right into the lot.

    Malaysian Style BBQ Pork Rice
    Samuel C.

Ipoh Kopitiam has earned the Michelin Bib Gourmand every year from 2022 through 2026, and it's easy to see why. They specialize in Malaysian cuisine, with a strong emphasis on Chinese-Malaysian dishes. I've been a regular here for the past six years, and it remains one of my favorite restaurants in the San Gabriel Valley (SGV). Here are my favorite dishes. Malaysian-Style BBQ Pork Rice (Hidden Menu Favorite) - 5/5. My favorite dish at Ipoh Kopitiam is the Malaysian-Style BBQ Pork Rice. This is essentially a "hidden" menu item. The restaurant prepares only a limited quantity of Char Siu each day, and it's typically available only during their afternoon tea service (3:00-4:45 PM). The dish reminds me of the legendary "Sorrowful Rice of Ecstasy" (黯然銷魂飯) from Stephen Chow's classic film God of Cookery (食神) - watch the movie in case you are wondering why the dish is ecstatic and sad. Like its cinematic counterpart, everything revolves around exceptionally well-executed Char Siu. Finding truly outstanding Char Siu in the SGV isn't easy, even at restaurants specializing in Cantonese BBQ. What sets Ipoh apart is their choice of meat: they use pork belly instead of the more common pork shoulder. In my opinion, pork belly is the superior cut as it delivers a richer flavor, a softer texture, and that satisfying melt-in-your-mouth bite that great Char Siu should have. Their roasting technique is equally impressive. The meat develops a noticeable smoky aroma and proper char without becoming burnt or dry. The glaze is beautifully caramelized, giving the exterior a glossy finish. While it isn't quite as intensely lacquered as the best versions I've had in Malaysia or Hong Kong, it's still better than most BBQ shops in the SGV. The result is smoky, tender, flavorful Char Siu with excellent fat rendering and just the right amount of chew. My only minor criticism is that the glaze leans slightly sweeter than I prefer, but that's really nitpicking. Tip: Order a side of the chili sauce that comes with the Hainanese Chicken Rice - it pairs wonderfully with the Char Siu. Hainanese Chicken Rice - 4/5. Back in 2019, I went on a quest to find great Hainanese Chicken Rice in LA. I tried well-known places like Savoy Kitchen, Cluck2Go, and several others, but none quite met my expectations. It wasn't until I discovered Ipoh Kopitiam that I finally found one that truly satisfied me. Although I think the quality has slipped slightly over the past few years, Ipoh still serves one of the better Hainanese Chicken Rice dishes in Greater LA. One thing Ipoh gets right is something many restaurants overlook: the rice. For me, the rice is just as important as the chicken. While it isn't quite as rich and fragrant as it used to be, it's still flavorful and cooked to the proper texture. The chicken itself is tender, silky, and moist, with a delicate layer of fat beneath the skin. I do wish the skin were a bit more gelatinous and slightly less stringy, but those are relatively minor criticisms. Tip: Order this dish earlier in the day whenever possible. The chicken is freshest then and retains its delicate texture and moisture before drying out during later service. Other Favorites: Char Kway Teow - 4/5. One of the better versions in the area, with excellent wok hei (breath of the wok). Unlike Thai Pad See Ew, Malaysian Char Kway Teow relies heavily on pork lard and dark, sweet soy sauce, which together add incredible richness and aroma. The noodles are well-fried, smoky, and satisfyingly savory. Dry Wonton Noodles - 4/5. One of my favorite noodle dishes here. The noodles are tossed with pork lard, giving them a wonderfully rich flavor. I especially enjoy pouring some of the chicken curry over the noodles for an extra layer of flavor. Milk Tea - 4.5/5. A must-order beverage. The tea has a bold black tea flavor balanced by just the right amount of dairy, producing a rich, smooth, and satisfying drink. Decent dishes: Nasi Lemak - 3/5. A decent version of Malaysia's national dish, though not one of the restaurant's strongest offerings. The coconut rice could be more fragrant, the sambal bolder and spicier, and the curry chicken a little drier. Even so, it's still worth trying if you've never had Nasi Lemak before. Beef Rendang - 3/5. The flavors are good, but I find the beef a bit tougher and drier than I'd like. It's enjoyable, though not a standout. Bak Kut Teh - 3/5. A respectable version that's worth ordering if you're unfamiliar with the dish. Personally, I'd prefer a richer broth with more pronounced herbal notes from the traditional Chinese medicinal spices. The soup tastes a bit lighter than I usually expect. Final Thoughts, after six years of dining here, Ipoh Kopitiam remains one of my favorite Malaysian restaurants in Southern California. While I've noticed a slight decline in consistency over the years, the restaurant continues to excel where it matters most: authentic flavors, well-executed Chinese-Malaysian classics.

Ipoh Kopitiam was a fantastic first visit, and we'll definitely be back. The service was warm and attentive, with the staff making us feel welcome from the moment we walked in. The restaurant also has a cozy, inviting ambiance that makes it a great spot to sit back and enjoy a leisurely meal. We came during Tea Time without realizing the menu was limited, but we still had plenty of delicious options to choose from. The Hainan chicken was a classic, well-executed version of the dish. The chicken was tender and flavorful, and everything from the rice to the sauces was done as well as you could hope for. The clay pot rice took about 25 minutes to prepare, but it was absolutely worth the wait. The combination of chicken and Chinese sausage gave it that comforting, home-cooked flavor, and the crispy rice at the bottom made every bite even better. We also ordered the roti with chicken curry, and the portion of curry was incredibly generous for the price. The curry was rich, flavorful, and paired perfectly with the warm, fluffy roti. One thing that really stood out was that they offer free refills on all of their drinks--including the lemonade--which is a nice touch that's becoming harder to find. Even with the limited Tea Time menu, we left impressed. Next time we'll make sure to come back during regular hours so we can explore the full menu.

I ordered a beef curry soup/stew dish. It was delicious and comforting. It comes with rice and shrimp chips. My partner ordered seafood fried rice and this was surprisingly good as well. Our party ordered so many different dishes and the restaurant still delivered. Normally I avoid restaurants with too long of a menu because I feel like they're doing too much, but this one somehow pulls it off. They also have southeast Asian snacks and foods for sale on the side too, making it feel like a mini grocery store too. We came cold and starving so I'm glad the food came out quick and piping hot. Parking is plentiful. I'd definitely return when I'm craving authentic Indonesian/Thai/Malaysian food.

They have a vast selection of Indonesian-Thai food as well as drinks. I came to grab a quick supper. I ordered a Chicken Pad Woon Sen and Watermelon juice. Food was okay. Juice was because it's fresh. Service was spot on. Staff were cordial. Plenty of parking. Prices were fair. Overall, it's a nice South East Asian food.

The rice was flavorful along side the well cooked meat. It came with an egg, spicy peanuts, and a coquette. You can order at the counter or at the table. Though, if you're unfamiliar, it's worth it to ask the staff for details especially for the items listed on the daily special since there's no descriptor on those. The place also serves as a mini grocery for Indonesian items if you want to make it at home. It does give homely vibes with a sense of community. Will definitely come back to try the other dishes like the satay. Fun fact, they were part of the original food court but now have their own space.

The rice cake on the side was good, but not a must; the chicken alone was enough. Might get again (tasty, but not standouts): 17 Nasi Goreng Seafood (seafood fried rice) 27 Mie Ayam Jamur (chicken mushroom noodles) Would NOT get again: 47 Sayur Asem (tamarind soup) - just okay, not bad, but not for me. Overall, the food was delicious. Staff were friendly and helpful with recommendations. The restroom was exceptionally clean, and parking is ample and free, though it can get crowded on weekends.

I wonder if this was popular when the restaurant first opened but I just smh when being in there. Despite the decor, the food is surprisingly delicious. Or maybe the decor was a decoy to set expectations low so that the food is just better than expected. I will definitely be back in a larger group setting so we can try many other dishes.

Reservations are best as the restaurant was full upon arrival. Parking was available in the private lot with a security guard or on the nearby streets. Henry's Cuisine is featured in the Michelin guide. The vibe of the restaurant was typical of a Vietnamese Chinese restaurant. It was bright inside and tables were mostly separated with tacky table dividers... The ordering process was unique. Chilean sea bass was sold out and we were told that pea shoots were not in season, despite seeing them at the grocery store next door... Started off with the signature lobster noodles. The staff brought out a lobster and claimed that it was 4.1 lbs. Lobster was priced at $40/lb. Noodles were a $20 surcharge. The lobster dish was gigantic and perfect for sharing. Flavoring was good and the e-fu noodles were decent. Portions were generous too. The seafood soup was okay, it felt more like an instant soup vs the traditional soups that were made overnight. The ong choy with beancurd was a gigantic portion and well stir-fried. The Vietnamese style filet mignon was tasty. Beef was tender, fragrant, and flavorful. Service by the staff was good. Meal ended off with a complimentary dessert. ~$75/head after tax and gratuity for dinner.
