Because we parked in the shared parking lot, we entered the restaurant through the back. We were immediately greeted upon entering. After being seated and looking over the menu, we ended up ordering: Fish Tofu Congee, $10.50 prior to tax- This meal truly nourished my soul because I was really sick a few days before and hardly ate anything. The congee was nice and hot and thick, just the way I like it. Portion wise, this is perfect for 2- 3 people to share. But again because I had not eaten much for the last few days, I ended up eating most of it (lol, had not realized how hungry I was until I was eating this). My husband did enjoy this congee too. Beef Stew Noodle Soup, $14.95 prior to tax- My husband ordered this dish and thought the soup was flavorful and the noodles had a nice chew. I also liked this dish and thought it was delicious. My husband finished most of this dish. ------------------------------ (Total= $28.10 after tax, prior to tip) Service was friendly. And because the restaurant is on the small side, it was very easy to get a server's attention if you needed something. Although I did speak mostly Cantonese when I was here (I am actually trying to make myself speak Cantonese more), you can order in English. So you shouldn't have any trouble when you dine here. Overall, coming to The Congee was the right choice for dinner and so glad we did. I do see myself coming back here for another meal in the near future. I chose to order the Spicy Salt Wings appetizer based on the positive reviews I had seen on Yelp. However, I must admit that I did not find the wings to my liking. They lacked both the expected spiciness and the salty flavor. I believe I had anticipated a taste similar to crispy spicy salted pork chops. After just one bite, I decided to take the remainder home with the intention of making them crispier myself. The Shrimp Wonton Noodles in Soup certainly deserve a five-star rating. The dish featured four generously sized shrimp wontons, all amply filled with shrimp. I did sample the noodles, but unfortunately, I was too satiated to fully appreciate them. If you want authentic Cantonese pork and preserved egg porridge or congee, continue looking. This place is NOT it. FFS, they use super dry, super old chicken as the protein to make the congee with. Everyone knows you ought to use pork. There's zero pork in their congee! And for the pan-fried rolls, they are store-bought. They are not the steamed kind where authentic restaurants make in-house. They buy the $2.99 kinds from an Asian supermarket, slap some cooking oil and soy sauce onto the wok and call it a day. There's not even a corn starch slurry to thicken the sauce! It's like they either don't know how to cook good food or they think you the consumer can't disconcern what good food is. To add insult to injury, they charge you $11.50 for these piss-poor rice rolls when most restaurants add them to a breakfast combo for free. So you end up spending $11.50 for the porridge and another $11.50 for the rice rolls separately. Money gauging much?? Lastly, they charge 25 cents for every to-go container. They gave me two for my two items, so when the bill came, they tacked on 50 cents to the bill. How tacky. Spending money on disappointing food is another level of hurt. FAIL IN EVERY ASPECT. This place was full at lunch time on a Thursday but the wait was only about 5 minutes. However, another reason why you can't always trust your AI chatbot: it steered me wrong with the wonton noodle soup. While the wontons were large and full of shrimp, the shrimp were quite overcooked and lacking the crispness that you get from marinating them in baking soda. The skin was also too thick in texture, and the noodles were too soft. While I would stay away from the wontons, I think you'd be satisfied with some of the other items on the menu. Yum! One of my to-go places in 626. It is a hole-in-the-wall in a Chinese plaza with maybe 7-8 tables. Service is quick and the staff speaks English. They specializes in Cantonese style wonton soup and congee. The wonton soup is my favorite and one of the best I've had in SoCal. I like getting the "two-item combo" noodle soup ($16) where you can pick two items (ex. wonton and beef stew) in a bowl of egg noodles. Delicious! The bowl also comes with a hefty portion of Chinese broccoli. The last couple times I came for lunch the place was pretty full but since service is fast you shouldn't have to wait very long, if at all. They take credit card. Tried The Congee for the first time and wow! Another go-to for comfort food discovery. I got the shrimp wonton noodle soup and the wontons were massive. Truly giant. I was getting full just from those alone. No complaints though! It was soooo good. The broth is light, not salty, and easy to customize with chili oil, soy sauce, salt, pepper, or black vinegar. Delicious hong kong style noodles for about $15 a bowl. Perfectly al dente thin egg noodles, deliciously savory and shrimpy broth, and a side of choy sum/mustard greens(?) that adds refreshing crunch. I love the shrimp wontons. Each one is huge, stuffed full of fluffy pork and big shrimp pieces in a thin wrapper. There is a wonderful sesame aroma in the filling and the wonton overall is so juicy. Their house special fish balls are also great, much better than any store bought fish ball with tiny pieces of chinese sausage in it. I like to split one bowl or order a regular noodle with a protein and a plain noodle in soup and share the protein between my partner and I. I would have to be pretty hungry to finish a bowl on my own. The restaurant is pretty small, sometimes you have to wait during rush hour, but tables clear pretty quickly. Service is no nonsense and brusque typical of casual Asian restaurants around here. Seating areas are kept very clean. I used to come here all the time when I was younger and just went back the other day... and maybe it's nostalgia but I swear it tasted better back then. The noodles were soft and overcooked with no bounce, the house fish balls were also too soft (like yes it's supposed to be soft but ... not mushy fall apart soft), and the wontons just didn't have that wow factor anymore (it falls apart, didn't have much flavor, just tastes exactly like ground pork and shrimp). The sliced beef was good and tender, no complaints there. They also have a B rating as of the time this review was written so ... do what you want with that information. There was one fly buzzing around when I was eating... I do like that they have chili oil + red vinegar available and used that to dip all my toppings in. For me that was a must since nothing was really wowing me at all. In the past, I really liked their seafood congee also! They put lots of seafood in like scallop, shrimp, fishball. Didn't order that this recent visit. But again, in the past I also really liked their wontons, house fish ball, and noodle soup... so hmmm ... take that with a grain of salt. But not at this place... the egg noodles are semi-soggy and just over cooked. * Wrong wonton 雲吞 : The wontons are GIANT. They are not supposed to be this big. The wontons here are bigger than your Siu-Mai dim sum and there's no care in the wrapping. Just a ball of meat squeezed into a wonton wrapper, that's it. The wonton noodle is such a comforting dish for the colder days. I saw someone get a 'dry' version with wontons, noodles, and soup were separate which looks bomb. They also have a 'you choose' option noodle soup with different beef varieties to choose from. The beef was tender and definitely worth getting as well. I still stand by the fact that these wontons are some of the best in the area... certainly the biggest! However, size of dumpling doesn't make up for what it lacks. The noodles in the wonton mien were too doughy, not firm and springy enough; and the soup was bland and eggy (sort of like the water they use to blanch the noodles). I have been coming here since I was a kid every time I would come to visit LA and see my family. This place is very nostalgic for me and definitely affordable. Super good prices and the portions are super huge. Honestly, I definitely will recommend this place because the food is super delicious and very simple. They have many options to choose from and they have very attentive people working there. The food taste super good and I always love coming here. TLDR: My go to spot for congee and noodles. It's affordable, good, and it reminds me of a restaurant that I used to enjoy very much. Lo mein: You could pick 2-3 items that you want with your lo mein. I chose Beef Stew and Wonton because that's what they specialize in, and the fish tofu (fish cake) is something that I just haven't had in a while. I love their portions. Whatever main you get here will ensure that you will leave the restaurant full. The egg noodle of the lo mein was cooked well, and the flavors of your toppings take center stage. The beef stew is soft, beefy, and contributes to most of what you'll taste. The wontons are huge and you can see that they're made on site, the fish tofu is basically a fish cake that is mostly MSG, but it's fine. The soup on the side is a way to keep the relatively dry entree lubricated. Noodle Soup: You take the same advantages of the lo mein but just add more soup. It's really a question of how much soup do you want to have in your meal. Either way, it works. Dumplings: It's the weakest part of the meal, yet it still holds its own. I would recommend skipping this and ordering more wontons, but the dumplings do give off a gyoza feel and a different taste profile. Seafood congee: It's either the best congee that I've had in SoCal or the 2nd best. It's served hot, and the thickness of the congee keeps it hot for extended periods of time. The squid, fish, and shrimp inside the congee are all cooked well, and none of them turned rubbery even after an extended period of time in the hot congee. Flavor wise, it's not too strong meaning they used minimal to no MSG and it makes this a perfect dish for a cold day or when you're sick. Service: The staff kept an eye on our water cups, so we were always topped up. Otherwise, it's your classic Asian restaurant staff etiquette. Minimal interactions and pleasantries. All business. Orders, water refills, and payment. No issues with that. Ambiance: I'm a sucker for hole in a wall establishments that just do what they do. This place is no different.
