The front desk and staff were great. However, they refused to bill it as a screening and instead billed it as a diagnostic procedure in which I now owe a doctors fee of $200 and a procedure fee of $834. If they had billed it as a screening (I am 54 and was due for my fist colonoscopy) as my PCP had indicated, my insurance would have fully covered it. So know how it will be billed beforehand. read more

The front desk is awful, but the doctors and nurses are very caring and competent. They use the kind of oxygen tubes which blow all the air up one nostril, and measure cO2 with the other-- injures the nose, I've had irritated runny nose for days as a result. Also, there's somewhat limited scope of testing they can do-- in a hospital setting they could for instance test acid levels while doing an upper GI endoscopy, but here they only have their set protocol. read more

No parking. Small and very loud waiting room. Front desk is rude and doesn't share updates of doctors running late. We waited 2 hours and the attitude was one of "this is typical, deal with it". Never saw this in a well-run ambulatory center, but when patients are through with there procedure, they come back out through the waiting room to exit. Impersonal, odd seeing sedated patients and having them complain as they walk by. Further, a series of men walking through the waiting area with beaten-up dirty coolers to collect tissue samples to take to pathology...tacky, disgusting and so incredibly unprofessional. Several procedures here and always top notch treatment and care. Attentive staff, doctors are top notch. Wouldn't go anywhere else. Do they do a lot of procedures? Yes they do and the number one reason I want to go there. They know what they are doing. Research has shown the number of complications is inversely proportional to the number of procedures performed in medical procedures. Practice makes perfect. Most of the negative reviews here I would put in the whiner, snow flake category. read more

Treatment from medical staff was good. My problem with this place is their billing department. I'm 54 yrs old, first colonoscopy ever. I'm tired of my primary care physician pushing for it so I finally went and got one. These guys REFUSED to bill my procedure as a screening test vs diagnostic because my take home poop (FIT) test my primary gave me came back with a false positive. Colonoscopy ate up my whole deductible for the year - even though my insurance said they would cover it 100%. Weeks of back and forth/appeals, etc. These guys refused to budge, blaming everybody else. Clearly it is much easier to shake me down for payment (though collections) vs. my insurance company. I will NEVER use these guys again. They were nasty and made everything seem like it was my fault. read more

Who runs this damned place? Sadly, they clearly don't run any of the places I get medical care. My wife had a colonoscopy done here. We were a bit worried at first because we walked into a completely packed waiting room, but the counter staff inspired nothing but confidence, and she was called in within maybe 5 minutes after our slightly early check-in. Her procedure took less time that they quoted-- I actually would have preferred they underquoted by half hour rather than overquoted by almost an hour, but it's not that big of a deal... just glad I didn't duck into a movie theater or something--and after she sobered up a bit she had nothing but great things to say about the experience. She said everybody was very nice and everything ran like a top, which is a nice change. I mean, most of the time when I go to a doctor's office and try to check in, the person behind the counter looks at me the way they might look at someone who owed them $600 asking for a 5:30am ride to the airport. This was a breath of fresh air during a not-so-fresh procedure. Way to go, guys! read more

I had my second colonoscopy yesterday and instead of being put out I was given just enough med to paralyze me but not enough to not feel the pain of the procedure. So for 30 minutes, I felt the whole colonoscopy and not be able to say anything. read more

In short, I received great care in planning and executing the procedure. I requested several changes of date, and they were very receptive and obliging; I had questions which they were more than happy to handle; I arrived on-time and received prompt and thorough treatment. Received my written results on my colonoscopy in the mail and indicated "multiple" polyps. I called Dr. Cheney's office and spoke with one of her staff, who was RUDE and had an ATTITUDE when she asked "didn't they tell you the day you had the procedure?". I explained I was loopy from the anesthesia and couldn't remember. I asked her to re-send out the results letter with the number of polyps. That was Friday. Monday morning at 8am my phone rings - It's Dr. Cheney. Immediately Dr. Cheney starts VERBALLY attacking me by yelling, "How dare I question her staff about the letter." She continues yelling that she takes meticulous notes and has been doing this for many years and is very thorough writing up for each patient. She also said I demanded a call back from her, which was absolutely not true. All this yelling before I could get one word in. I have NEVER been spoken to in this manner, especially by a doctor. When she came up for air and I could finally speak and explain my Friday phone call - she apologized over and over again for the misinformation she received and asked who the staff member was. Very unprofessional, rude and aggressive. Forget bedside manners, no manners at all Dr. Cheney. Needless to say, I will never go back to Boston Endoscopy. read more

I never thought I would write a review of a place where I got my colonoscopy. But after my experience at Boston Endoscopy Center recently I felt like I had to tell the world about this place. Of course it was not on Yelp before I added it with this review. Either Yelpsters are too young to get colonoscopies done, or reviewing a place like this is too much of an overshare, even for this forum. OK. I'll be the brave one first. If you are worried about having a colonoscopy - and who isn't? - and you live in the Boston area, pray to whatever deity you like that you will get referred to the Boston Endoscopy Center. This place is staffed with the most caring, compassionate, and competent medical professionals I have ever come across. I am sensitive to this because I am a total wimp when it comes to any medical procedure of any kind. Even getting a flu shot makes me feel apprehensive for hours beforehand. I know what a lame patient I am, and I feel badly for medical professionals who have to treat me. So I was a quivering mass of anxiety for several weeks leading up to the dreaded prep and the actual procedure. The prep is unpleasant, I won't lie. But if you do it right the first time then you'll be sufficiently, well, cleaned out to have the procedure done, and you won't have to do it again. FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS THEY SEND YOU. Eat a low-residue diet for as many days beforehand as you can stand it. I didn't realize how much fiber I eat until I couldn't have any, so I was pretty miserable to be around for those few days. But everyone affected by this will survive. And the liquid-only diet the day before is really key. You'll be starving, but it's a great excuse to not go to work, lay on the couch, and watch re-runs on TV Land. That night, drink the stuff they tell you to drink, and put up with the rest of it. You'll be fine. I promise. As for the actual day, you'll be greeted by nice people in the front lobby, who go to great pains to explain exactly what will happen. And then when you go in the back, you'll lay in your own wheelie bed and get an IV. I hope you all get the amazing IV-installing person that I got. I am a total needle scaredy cat, and she was the exact kind of compassionate genius for the job. And then they'll wheel you in the actual room, and they'll give you something called propofol. This is the so-called "Michael Jackson" drug. Within 10 seconds you'll be asleep. When you wake up it will be done and you will have no memory of any of it. Now here's where it gets really good. I am well below the age at which most people get their baseline colonoscopy. But I have an extensive family history of colon cancer, so I decided that I should stop wondering whether I'm a ticking time-bomb, and just find out where I am with this. After it was over and I was munching on graham crackers and sipping apple juice, the doctor came out and gave me the all-clear. Hooray! So I'm good for 5 years. And that's one anxiety-causer that I can now check off my list. Get screened if you need to. Fight the fear as much as you can, and then just do it. And when you're ready, there's no better place to have this done than the Boston Endoscopy Center. read more

I just had a colonoscopy here a few days ago, and today is Thanksgiving. This year I'm thankful for Boston Endoscopy Center, so much so that I feel compelled to write a review. These people are pros. Literally everyone I dealt with were experts and treated me with utmost respect, compassion, and punctuality. For me this was the most important factor to tolerating such a seemingly unpleasant procedure. From Eric scheduling my procedure, Peggy at the front desk, the nurses that looked after me -- Kelsey, Teresa, Mindy, Kevin, my anesthesiologist Dr. Dimitry, and most importantly of all, my colonoscopist Dr. Horst, I could not have dreamed of a better team. I found BEC after another gastroenterologist suggested I undergo diagnostic colonoscopy. I eventually decided to comply, but we arrived at a stalemate when I was unwilling to accept anesthesia/sedation drugs, and he was unwilling to perform an unsedated colonoscopy. He was convinced that I would be crying and screaming in pain, and as a result, the procedure would pose more risk; however, my research told me otherwise, so I began searching for a gastroenterologist that would be willing to perform unsedated colonoscopy. Thankfully I quickly found Dr. Horst who has built somewhat of a reputation for unsedated colonoscopy and for good reason. He called me beforehand to better understand my concerns with sedation, to talk through the procedure, and to ultimately calm my nerves and put me at ease. On the day of my colonoscopy, Dr. Horst became my best advocate for avoiding the sedation drugs and was very confident/firm with the other clinicians. Using his skill and expertise of over 45k colonoscopies, a pediatric endoscope, water and C02 instead of air, Teresa holding my hand, and a lot lube, we got through it together. Since I was wide awake, he made it quite the learning experience as well. I'm happy to say that other than feeling violated (lol), I had no pain. Rather than pain, I would describe it as a feeling of gas, pressure, and fullness. Because my colonoscopy was of diagnostic nature, Dr. Horst went above and beyond to examine my terminal ileum which is the final part of the small intestine. I will admit that the scope entering my small intestine was a very shocking feeling. I gasped and let out a moan, but it wasn't painful -- more of a feeling that something doesn't belong. It's my understanding, however, that most colonoscopies stop at the cecum/ileo-cecal valve and don't venture past into the small intestine. For prospective patients, my accolades are hard to come by. I highly recommend Dr. Horst and BEC. Trust me when I say you will be in the compassionate care of WORLD CLASS experts. We are lucky to live in Boston. To the staff, clinicians, and doctors at Boston Endoscopy Center, I cannot thank you enough for putting up with me and getting me through my colonoscopy. I recently had a colonoscopy at Boston Endoscopy Center. First, their recommended prep is easy and definitely more tolerable than others I had at a hospital several years ago. In addition, both the administrative and clinical staff were extremely professional yet created a relaxed and comforting atmosphere. After the prep and not consuming anything but liquids for 24 hours, I sincerely appreciated their timeliness and efficiency. My appointment was at 9:30 and at 9:45 I was in the procedure room ready to start. The suggested pick up time was 11:00 and at 10:55 my husband and I were sitting in a room waiting to speak the doctor. Their goal is to make an unpleasant procedure as comfortable as possible and to help patients to feel at ease. Parking is right in front of the door, check in is immediate, and it is staffed with highly qualified physicians from BIDMC. Not that a colonoscopy is something to be "thrilled" about, but I am excited to be able to tell my friends about the BEST place to go....I highly recommend the Boston Endoscopy Center and would encourage anyone who is hesitant or reluctant to deal with the hassle of a hospital setting yet want first rate care and physicians to utilize this facility. As a consultant and business coach myself, I am cognizant of what it takes to be an effective business and it is apparent to me that Boston Endoscopy Center is continually striving to improve all aspects of the patient experience. read more

This was my 2nd colonoscopy. I have also had 8-9 endoscopies. 1st time at BEC. All the rest have been at Newton Wellesley Hosp. with no problems. I won't go back to BEC. Prep was inappropriate for gastrointestinal conditions I have. Dr. knew of these conditions and should have adjusted prep. No such luck. Person giving IV was terrible. Very painful and took multiple tries. I had warned the person that I was a difficult subject to give an IV and how others go about it to make administering an IV more easy. She ignored me and had a bad attitude. Had to call in a 2nd person to actually give the IV. Drug mix used was very good in that there was minimal drug hangover. Post procedure I was rushed out of the office, felt like I was an inconvenience because of the extended time I stayed due to stomach pain. One person made a suggestion immediately after I woke up on how to deal with the pain and to try to alleviate the pain. Everyone else kept asking, "Are you ready to GO yet". To the point where I left despite being in substantial pain. Ended up in the emergency room due to post procedure vomiting. Turned out to be abdominal gas from the prep or the procedure. An emergency room visit that could have been avoided had I been given better care at BEC. Dr. from BEC did visit me in the emergency room, which was considerate. I will not go back to BEC. read more

I have been going to BEC for over 10 years and I have never had a problem at all. The staff is extremely patient, kind and efficient and I have never felt rushed. Use to go to Beth Israel and the drive is just awful in comparision to this place. I don't have one complaint and these people who posted bad reviews must just be chronic complainers...this is definitely a high quality caring staff and that is exactly the way the Doctors planned it to be!! read more

Dr. ran 1:45 min late. No apology. When you have been prepping and up all night, that is really annoying. Other than that the place is run like an assembly line. Dozens of people there in the waiting room. Beds lined up in a room separated by curtains. Very uninviting. I had a colonoscopy yesterday at BEC. I was so impressed with everything about the experience: the prep instructions were clear and easy to follow (and - from what I hear from others - far more tolerable than most prep options); the front office staff were welcoming and efficient; the clinical staff were friendly and compassionate (this was my first medical procedure with sedation and I was quite anxious about it); and the post-procedure treatment was clear and helpful. And I even received a follow-up call from a nurse this morning checking on me. While none of us looks forward to this type of procedure, if you have to have it, you want it to be as pleasant as possible, and the team at BEC certainly delivered. I will definitely go back next time I have the procedure done. Kudos to the folks running the show at BEC - you have developed a great service culture! read more

I am going to have to agree with the negative reviews unfortunately. For a city such as Boston which is known for its world class health care, this center goes against that reputation. The waiting room was tiny and very crowded and loud. I could hear all the information of the people checking in. I could see patients leaving which was so awkward. This is basically an assembly line, so once inside there are patients lined up in beds with only curtains dividing. I could hear the full blown medical history of each person on each side of me which seems really contrary to medical ethics. Because it was such a factory, they wanted you in and out as quickly as possible ergo I would give the staff a D in bedside manner. They push people around like cars on an assembly line without respect for including them in the process. I would ask your primary care physician to see if they can refer you to another center. Maybe the actual medical part is fine but zero human dignity. read more

Regular colonoscopy appointment was terrible. It started with a curt receptionist, then proceeded to a nurse who did not want to listen to me about which of my veins can be used for IV line. My right vein was poked to the extend of causing very bad pain, I was loudly screaming from pain. And, later, as I was suggesting all along, my left arm was used... I woke up during the procedure to hear a conversation in the room about someone's experience traveling in the first class on a plane. No apologies were offered - patient is not a person, right? Anesthesiologist just hurriedly injected more once he saw my wide open eyes. The doctor did not stop by to discuss results. After the procedure, I was hurried out of the small curtain separated space as fast as possible. And now I received 5! separate bills to pay, while having a good coverage: separate for colonoscopy, separate for surgery (read tiny 2mm polyp removal), separate for lab services to prep the tissue, separate for pathologist to read it, separate for anesthesia... No mention of what to expect has ever occurred before or after the procedure. Be VERY CAREFUL before choosing this place!!! I have to add that about 5 years ago I was treated in the same place with very different impression (other than the same curtain-separated facility). Something has gone terribly wrong. read more
