We were in a panic when we realized one of our passports was a problem on the same day as our flight! The line was long when we arrived but it moved and the staff were efficient, great and calm we made it through and had passport by 3:30. Thank you all so much for helping us out so well in an emergency. Tips for others: there were no avail appts online on Sunday, but on Monday at 6:30 am there were appts avail online at 10:30 same day. Keep trying. They really do turn away people w no appt tho. This is the most efficient government building, i've ever been to in my life. First of all, when you come through, you do have to go through security, but they're so kind and so patient. My daughter has a brace on and had to come in with a walker.And they treated her so nicely. You have to make an appointment to be seen, you can do it online. I was able to make an apt for the next day. When you come, everything moves on time, it literally took me ten minutes to do everything. As long as you come with what you need and what you're supposed to bring. It was so quick and easy and again So efficient, I can't say that enough. It's blowing in my mind. If you live in New England, you are planning imminent international travel, and you do not have a US passport, this agency is an excellent option! In short, if you are traveling soon and have proof of this, make an appointment for as early in the morning as possible. If you have driven a long distance to get to the appointment or have another compelling reason, they can usually print the passport at the same day by 3 PM. Otherwise, if you are local to Boston, they will probably ask you or someone else to come collect the passport the next day. I wanted to provide my experience in detail below in case it is helpful to anyone. I am a new US citizen. I live in Connecticut and was naturalized during a same day path ceremony a few days before I was planning to travel to Canada for Christmas. As soon as I had my certificate of naturalization in hand, I looked for an appointment for an urgent passport on the State Department website. The agencies in Connecticut and New York both had no appointments showing, and so I decided to make a day of that and take an appointment in Boston 3 days later! Because I was driving a long distance, I took the earliest appointment in the morning that I could to give the maximum time for the passport to be printed the same day. I printed out proof that I was traveling, in my case, a hotel reservation and my rental car because I was driving across the border, and also filled in the application online. I had my wife take several photos of me using a good camera, standing against a white wall in my house with no shadows. I had these printed at Walmart on a 4 x 6 sheet for just $.15 and cut them in 6 pieces. Be sure when you are cropping your photos to measure them so that they are the correct size and that your head is the correct size in the frame! The photo uploader and checking tool on the state department website is actually very good as a first check to see if your photo meets the specifications, however, I would use the built-in software on your phone to do the crop because it seemed to me like the resolution of the photos dropped when I used the state department tool! The location of the passport agency is pretty great: it is right next to the TD garden near North Station. There is plenty of street meter parking for two hours at a time, and there are good transit connections for both commuter rail or the T to get to South Station and bus connections. If you have time to spare between the time that you drop off your passport and when you need to pick it up, you could park in the garage or move your car further into the north end where there is free street parking. I wound up moving my car three times during the day but only had to pay six dollars for parking. I arrived and parked about a half hour before my appointment. Once I cleared security, the folks at the passport agency checked my appointment confirmation and also that I had proof of travel. Once inside, someone at a first window collected all of my documents, including my original citizenship certificate, as well as originals and copies of my state ID and other IDs. I was given a number and called to the front a few minutes later. They checked over my application again at a second window, I paid the fee, which actually seemed like it was a little cheaper than paying for the overnight mail service, and was asked to come back at 3 PM because I had driven from so far away! You should make sure to take a picture of your pick up receipt in case you lose it or the wind blows it away, which actually happened to someone else who is waiting in line! I returned at 2:45 and cleared security again. My passport was ready and waiting! I was back home in Connecticut before dinner time. I wanted to write this detailed review because there seems to be a lot of conflicting information online. You do not need to be in a life or death situation to get the passport the same day, but you also can't get it the same day just because you want to! My impression is that the state department works really hard to get everyone their passport when they need it and have developed strict criteria to help with that. Everyone during my visit was kind, patient, and helpful, and they were really working to make sure that people were able to get where they needed to go! BEWARE OF RANDOM CLOSURE. I had an emergency travel appointment booked for this Friday with international travel being on Saturday. I just received an email today (Tuesday) that my appointment has been cancelled due to agency closure?! I am only in Boston for one day, I can't change our Boston flights for less than $2.5k. I picked Boston, because all other sites in NY and other states where full. One of the requirements was to purchase the plane ticket and travel within 3 days from the appointment or something like that lol. What was a very stressful situation became bearable because customer service here was excellent. Please don't be rude like someone at the line who didn't understand the rules such as that there is not entry if you do not have an appointment. Everyone in this building was nice. I arrived super early and I was seen by the agents and given my new passport within two and a half hours. Driving from NY to Boston was fun, so all in all, it was a great experience. There are tree fees associated with the transactions and the agent told me that all can be done in one check or a money order. When I got my passport renewed it was the easiest quickest interaction ever. However when I went to pick up my passport (a day later than they told me it would be ready) I waited for 25 minutes then they told me they couldn't find my passport in theirs office. At this point I had work and needed to leave so I told them to please either try and find it now or I will come back later. That's when they got this other guy over who was so beyond rude to me. He yelled at me and left me crying after THEY lost my passport. Told me to either wait (had been waiting for 40 minutes at this point) or leave. I'm still shaken from this encounter. Feel the need to post a review to give others guidance... I scanned this over and over for tips when I was in near panic loosing my passport two weeks before a trip to France. FIRST ... I wouldn't recommend walk ins they will turn you away and the most difficult part of the process is getting an app, once you do the rest is easy, just have all the paperwork ready including passport photos. To make an appointment be patient and persistent, half the time the number is busy just keep calling. When you finally get a rep, which you will there is a strong possibility they will tell you it's all booked and your only shot is a cancelation. DONT loose hope! I spent an entire day calling and half the time they told me nothing than other times far away places like Arizona or Honolulu... but there were places so keep trying NOTHING is impossible, when someone cancels you want to be the FIRST person on the phone to take the spot. The reality is if a spot is open and the rep can't get your contact info quickly enough, the appointment is booked. I did come close to a NY app she said booked by time we got all the info in... frustrating but there is always a chance someone will cancel. The reps told me the way appointments work is that it is a live system with 900 people at once trying to do the same thing and the longer you are on the phone there is a chance that something will randomly pop up. Don't be rude to them they are just doing their jobs and I don't think any amount of begging can get them to change how the system works... one told me "we are allowed to try three times" not sure how true that is another said the max they can spend on the phone with you is one minute but keep in mind the longer you have them there is more of a chance something will pop up this is exactly how I got my appointment. (Honestly I wasn't a jerk doing this, I would have lost a ton of money if I missed my flight I just asked basic questions and for some guidance to see if something would pop up while we were speaking) By keeping the rep longer after she told me there was nothing else she could do, something popped up in Houston and I grabbed it. I also asked for a manager each time they were about to hang up and there is nothing more a manger can do but you get a second shot of being on the phone and in front of the live system of cancelations. I did not take Houston but I had a trip to France and if I did not go I would owe my company money... cheaper to fly to Houston than pay for the trip so I scooped that up and I would recommend weighing your options and taking what they can give you. Since the last thing I wanted to do was go to Texas, I kept calling and used that as a back up plan. It took a day of trying but by the end of the day I got Boston! A five hour bus trip but better than missing France. GOOD NEWS... upon arriving it was pretty easy from there so the hardest part IS the appointment. Once I got to Boston they told me that Boston is the new hub because New York has been booked for two years and that some people came all the way from Nebraska. Just keep calling persistently... ignore busy signals and try again... I really hope no one is rude to the workers so when it really got to the point the said they couldn't do more or keep me on the phone I just asked for a manager and they'd check again. On my most recent visit, everyone here - from door security to guards to agents at the window - was exceptionally friendly, kind and efficient. It made a stressful situation much less stressful. When I came back the next day to pick up the passports, they remembered me (as I did them) and were just as lovely. I am thankful. In our society it seems we love to gripe about bureaucracy, and it's sometimes justified, but I also think it's important to praise and encourage when people are doing their jobs so beautifully. One word and this is just a UX thing, not anything to do with the fine folks who work here - I myself as well as nearly every other applicant whose interactions I overheard somehow failed to realize we needed to print out the online application before coming. Proof of appointment printed out? Check. Proof of travel printed out? Check. But somehow we all missed the memo on the application printing. I was turned away at the airport for having a passport that expires in 2 months, forcing me to miss my flight to Portugal with my family. The next morning, I drove to Boston and called the National Passport line to book an appointment for an emergency passport. Unfortunately there were no appointments available in the region, but since I had a flight to Portugal that evening, they were going to request that an agent from Boston try to squeeze me in. I submitted my passport application JUST FOR A NAME CHANGE, and idk if it got lost but the website was "down" for people who applied for a 7 day period and now that the status finally came up for me it's too late. I drove from Albany NY the night before, so I could be at Federal Building by 9:00am as instructed. 6 hours later I had my passport. My date of travel is 6/16/23 to Jamaica. I am still waiting on this location (location #10) for my two kids passports. They were received on March 22nd. Super fast and easy! Everyone was super friendly and made the process super smooth considering i had a special needs toddler with me.

My dad applied to renew his passport back in July 2022 and we had it expedited. I been calling from September 2022, November 2022 and from January this year until now. The money order we paid to expedite the passport was cashed out and we never got the new passport or got the old one sent back to us. Every time I've called, they told me to check the status on the website which is always unavailable. I have contacted the senators office regarding this issue and I been constantly calling the number listed on the passport agency page and no one has an answer for us. Worst experience EVER! I have spent a total of over 8 hours on the phone now with the National Passport Service. We are past our 12 week period of waiting and will miss our International trip next week and this agency is NO HELP WHATSOEVER! No appointments ever - but 'just call the line and ask for help - nonsense! Not unless you have an entire day to get nowhere. Can not get anyone on the phone, I called literally 1 second after 8am and still had to wait 4 hours to speak to the supervisor as he requested I call back on Thursday if I haven't received a shipping label yet. After going through a nightmare with Iberia Airlines and being rejected at the check in, I came for a passport renewal at this agency. I had scheduled the earliest time they had, which was at 12:30, but they were able to take me right at 8:30am , which is when they opened. The staff is beyond nice that I've never in my life felt more appreciated as a customer. Getting a rushed passport, which by the way they printed for me in 2 HOURS, cost me only $170 with rushed fee. These people were complete angels. Everyone I spoke to was so nice and friendly. Here are tips for you- 1. Make sure you have all your papers and photo pies ready. I was in a panic and copied in black and white and color but they didn't need all that. If you don't know what to bring, CALL THE NATIONAL PASSPORT LINE AND THEY'LL TELL YOU. DON'T SHOW UP WITHOUT YOUR STUFF. (If you don't have your passport photos there's two places within walking distance and they have form copies but you need your birth certificate, copies of it, license and copies) 2. Show up before opening. They opened at 8:30 on Friday when I went, so I showed up at 7:20 and security was already there to let people inside the building (it's an office building essentially). There are chairs to wait in. My appointment was 10:30 and I had a receipt by 9. 3. Don't freak out. They were all really nice and helpful. If you have questions feel free to ask them but they kept us all updated. 4. Bring something to do. It's boring once you are certain you'll have your passport on time but you can't do anything but wait. My timeline: 7:20 - arrival at building 8:20 - they explained how the day would work. They triage your urgency based on travel plans and then give you a letter and number like at an RMV. 8:30 - people with 8:30 appointments were lined up to triage. 8:37ish - the rest of us who had later appointments were triaged and sent inside to wait. When they call your number you go up to the window, give your papers and answer some questions and then they give you a return time to pickup your passport or discuss with you how it'll be mailed to you. 9:00 - I had my pickup time for 4pm 2:00 - I went back inside to wait. (Sit on the left side of the chairs or stand on the left) 3:50 - they made us stand behind the chairs, checked our receipts and sent us to line up. They made us line up so the left side was first in. I was fourth. 4:01 - I was already outside with my passport calling my family. Online and on the phone they don't specifically tell you that they can do same day passports. They won't guarantee anything and told me each time I called that "someone would discuss options" with me. There are, apparently, FOUR passport centers in the US that does same day and Boston is one of them. It seemed that the highest urgency, people who needed the passports during the same day got them about 11:15 am. I needed mine for a 7am flight the next morning and I was to pickup at 4. If it's not next day or maybe next two days they probably schedule you to pick up in a few days or mail it, I'm not sure. TL; DR they CAN do same day passports if you have all your papers and materials together and have proof of travel. Multiple times they said they're there to help US so they were super nice and CRAZY efficient. If every RMV worked like them, we'd be one happy country. Good luck! read more

I realized my passport was lost less than a week before my international flight, so I started reading reviews and I thought all hope was lost. But truthfully, I did my research and read reviews from many agency's in the US and all of them are connected to the same phone line so I took my "notes" and knew I had to take action immediately. I hope I can offer my advice and share my story to anyone in a similar situation. I had read how difficult it is to land an appointment, so the first step I took is I reached out to my US district representative on the weekend, since my passport was discovered missing on Saturday and my flight was on Thursday. He offered to help but I wasn't going to sit back and wait as there is no guarantee they can help. I waited until Monday at 8:20 AM to call the line, it was immediately busy and I was persistent. I called and called about 40 times before I finally got through at 8:50 and got through to get on the call line, I knew there wouldn't be any available appointments in Boston on my first call but I was determined to keep calling. I was connected to a person with a total of 7 times, every time being offered places far away that I would need to travel Hawaii, Texas, Connecticut, Washington DC, Maryland, and then the 7th time I was offered New York, which I took as a backup. One of the reps I spoke to said "I don't think you will get a Boston appointment, cancellations are rare." I hung up and just kept calling, I continued to waste time on the phone and ask questions after they offered me somewhere far and then would say "is there anything now?" They told me it is a live system and they would have told me if there was anything, but I just hung up called again. Sometimes the phone was busy, sometimes it would hang up, and other times I would be connected to a rep. Just hang up and call again, repeat. After I secured the NY appointment for Wednesday, I kept calling, at this point it was my third hour of no breaks and on my 90th call, I was connected to someone and she flat out said there were no appointments available AT all, and I was like "nothing????" She then said "theres actually a Boston appointment at 11:30 (which was in 40 minutes and I had not taken my passport photos yet) but I told her I would take it because I knew I didn't have much time to think, I quickly gave her my info and she secured it for me and she was just as excited as I was! She was happy for me and she told me good luck and I immediately sprung into action and drove to take my passport photos at Walgreens and made it RIGHT at 11:30 to the agency office in Boston, I met other people in line with the same appt times as me and we exchanged our horror stories of the phone system and how insane the entire process was, but we were all just excited to finally be in line in process to get our passports. The process after that line moved fairly quickly and I was able to get through with a stroke of luck that day. People were very shocked I made a same day appointment as they had been calling the same amount and were unable to secure anything for a while. Moral of my story is designate time to have all your documents prepared before (unlike myself who was printing in itinerary in the short time frame I had), do your research, and keep calling to blow up the line, I did the call back service once but on the other line was still on hold. I was proactive and very aggressive with calling but now Im sitting the next day with my new passport and packing for my trip to Aruba. I am so happy and I was able to secure same day appointment, and I'm sure that with persistence, 3 hours, and 90 phone calls, someone is bound to cancel their appointment last minute. Lastly, my rating is a direct reflection on the agency that requires there to be a system that is broken and needs to have another way then a whole country wide toll free phone number and extremely limited appointments regardless of special circumstances. It was extremely stressful and shouldn't be this way, the appointment system is flawed and needs to be fixed as there are not enough appointments available for people, and the cancellations are difficult because people trying to cancel or reschedule their appointments are on the same 800 number/or they have to send an email. It is extremely outdated, and there most certainly could be a better solution for making an appointment that wouldn't clog up the phone lines or be an abused online system. It sets up people to scramble to take appointments in different states in order to get something that they would be able to do in their home state. I also want to add that I was extremely understanding and not rude or disrespectful to any of the reps I spoke to, I understood the parameters and knew what I was up against, and the scarcity of appointments was not their fault or control. I am glad that I got a passport the next day but I am extremely exhausted from a difficult past 4 days. Good luck to everyone! read more

I WOULD GIVE THIS PLACE 6 STARS IF I COULD. My parents were scheduled to fly to France at 10PM. When we went to check in, we were notified that we could not go because France only accepts passports with 3+ months before the expiration date. My dad only had 1 month until his passport expired and he didn't know about the passport validity rule. We went to the Boston Passport Agency the very next morning at 1030AM, submitted ALL OF OUR PAPERWORK (IMPORTANT!!) and was able to come back the same day for pickup at 4PM. Most people hate going to government agencies but this place was nothing like it. I was expecting an experience like going to the RMV but nope. The staff here was incredibly efficient with what they do and they were really nice - from the security officers to the workers! People were in and out. MAKE SURE YOU GO OVER EVERYTHING AND THAT YOU HAVE THE PROPER PAPERWORK BEFORE GOING TO THE BPA. read more

I was extremely happy to have received my passport from this location; in hand, about 3 weeks after submitting the application here in Indiana. I know this short processing time is not what to expect with every transaction, so I am especially happy they worked expeditiously to get mine complete prior to the routine 6-8 weeks.
