What a fun space! Well decorated with lights and flowers hanging from then ceiling . We ordered the Pacific platter which was delicious. It came with five Nigiri and four pieces of either the UCI or the Hawaii roll. We also ordered a rainbow roll. Loved everything here, except the miso soup which was a bit watered down. Parking is super easy in the lot out front. It's right between Albertsons and Wells Fargo. Will definitely return! Will

A hidden gem for Japanese food near UCI! I absolutely love the décor here--it's elegant, romantic, and makes dining such a pleasant experience. It's great for a family meal with kids, but also perfect for a girls' night out or a date. Here's what we tried and loved Sashimi Platter: Salmon, tuna, yellowtail, sweet shrimp... thick cuts, super fresh, buttery, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Hawaiian Roll: Shrimp tempura, eel, crunchy tempura flakes--every bite was a surprise! Salmon Hand Roll: Flavorful sauce and plenty of salmon--must-try for salmon lovers. Unagi Rice Bowl: The eel was cut into a star shape (so cute and unique!) with generous toppings. A great choice if dining solo. Appetizers: Crispy fried tofu, edamame, and sweet potato fries--our kids couldn't stop eating them! You can order à la carte or go for the all-you-can-eat option: * À la carte is more refined, perfect for a light meal. * AYCE is the way to go if you're really hungry! Kids under 3 eat free Ages 3-12: $19.95 ‍ 12+ years: Weekday lunch $34.95, dinner & weekends $39.95 The food is plated beautifully--Instagram-worthy shots with zero effort. Even when dining with kids, you'll walk away with some gorgeous photos. Overall: Botan Sushi not only serves fresh and delicious food, but also offers a cozy, romantic, and family-friendly atmosphere. Definitely one of the best choices near UCI for group gatherings or date nights. Can't wait to come back with friends!

Good late night sushi spot. The service was excellent, the ordering system was efficient and the workers were kind. They gave us some free apple juice and calpico while we were waiting for our order! Very aesthetic interior with a lot of tables. I enjoyed the hawaii roll, ocean breeze roll, and umi delight roll. I usually am very strongly against cream cheese in sushi but the jalapeño complemented it perfectly. I ordered the UCI roll because zot zot zot but unfortunately it was my least favorite roll. The sweet potato and the asparagus are just not very appealing as sushi ingredients in my opinion. The miso soup tasted like water, I've never seen such clear miso broth. Maybe it's because we came right before closing, i'm sure they would have replaced it if I asked but I didn't want to bother them after last call.

Lovely and spacious sushi restaurant with great service. I found a social media discount deal that we took advantage of today. I was trying to decide between a handful of delicious rolls, and I decided to go with the Hawaiian one with a perfect amount of spicy with jalepeno. I look forward to trying more!

Arrived around 9:15pm. Barely anyone inside so figured service would be fast. Took a while to order. They let you sit anywhere you like. Once ordered, food came out within 15 min or so depending what you got. Ambiance gives kawaii aesthetic as it was cute / girly with the pink and florals. Music was chill and easy going. TBH wrote this review to get the complimentary drink but also did my due diligence to give an honest review. I tried the peach oolong tea. When I received it, it was a large cup but it wasn't cold. Tasted sweet but not as refreshing... Noticed they offered ayce but was thinking it's probably better on a day when I can try lunch ($32.99). Also the guests that were there weren't really doing ayce so I was hesitant. For the signature bento box, it came with a couple slices of dill pickle, picked veggies, stir fried cabbage, California rolls, boiled egg, rice, and the protein of choice, in this case botan fried chicken. The chicken had a lot of flavor and was crispy. Everything else was mid or average. I've had better bento boxes but I did come to try since it was a spot near campus. Yo girl was still hungry so decided to try one of their rolls. Ordered the Ichi roll which reminded me of Alaska roll with lemon on it. So if you're familiar with Alaska roll (California roll with fresh salmon on top), then that's what it tasted like. Towards the end, the owner was kind to let me try their honey boba which was sweet and soft ! I added it to my drink and it made it so much better !! Hopefully next time I'll have a better experience. For those of you who haven't been here before, it can be a spot if you're looking for Japanese comfort food, that's open somewhat late (until 11pm), and are near UCI !

I came in for lunch AYCE for $35; it includes 4 orders of sashimi, it was so cutely presented! Warning, the orders come full size so I only made it two rounds. The botan chicken is OUTSTANDING. Must order, as well as the yellowtail sushi

Ambiance wise, the decor and the aesthetic of the restaurant is very kawaii to say the least. I went in during lunch time on a Saturday and got seated immediately. There was only one waiter working, but she was super nice and checked up on my party multiple times. As for the food, it was okay. Not bad but nothing special that stands out to me. Most of the rolls were pretty standard. I feel like the salmon could be more fresh, as you can see by its light color.

We came here to celebrate my birthday and it was such a great choice! The Happy Platter was the perfect size for our family of three. It was arranged beautifully and had a nice variety of options. We added a few other dishes and left feeling full and satisfied. Our server was wonderful. She was attentive, friendly, and welcoming. The service was fast, and she helped us choose the right rolls for our taste. Everything she suggested was delicious. We will definitely be back for another special night. I highly recommend this spot for both the food and the service!

This was very good, there is a lot of variety, and it was really delicious. The all you can eat is a great value and it was a lot of fun. The atmosphere was nice too.

This was a pretty good sushi spot! It was our first time coming, and the servers were patient with us while we decided what we wanted to order. The boat had a lot of options to choose from, and it was pretty filling for 4-5 people. Overall, I would say it's pretty chill and a great place to get sushi with friends or family!

I tried the Bento Tonkatsu box during lunch, and overall, it was a satisfying experience. The pork Tonkatsu was crispy with a nice balance of sweet and salty flavors. It came with a generous portion of cabbage, and a little bit of pickled greens (not sure what they are called), plenty of rice, and four California sushi rolls. It was filling! My only wish was for less cabbage and more variety in the sides. I'd give it a 7 out of 10 for the food. The restaurant itself was really pretty, and they offer a $1 drink with the Bento box, along with free refills. The atmosphere was a solid 9 out of 10, and service was exceptional. Worth a try if you're in the area!

Came here on a Monday evening to grab a bite before grocery shopping. Right when you walk in, you're greeted by the most kawaii decor. We almost thought we were at a Hello Kitty cafe of sorts. We were met with friendly servers who allowed us to take a seat anywhere. The menu here is pretty large, with all kinds of Japanese food items like ramen, sushi, and bento boxes. For two people, we got the bento box with tonkatsu which also came with rice, 4pc cali roll, boiled cabbage, seasoned egg, and some radish. For apps, we also go a salmon cut roll, and the dinosaurian egg. The tonkatsu was good, but very thin, although the sauce on it was delicious! The salmon roll was okay. The fish was a bit warm, but maybe it's because being wrapped in rice made it warm. The dinosaurian egg is an avocado stuffed with crab meat and spicy tuna, deep fried. In theory it sounded good, but because everything was deep fried, it just all kind of tasted mushy and warm. Food came out within 10-15 minutes of ordering with our app coming out last. Overall, it was a decent spot for an affordable meal. For three items and two people, we spent about $40 which included tip.

The offer that they are running and asked me to click redeem just for it not to be honored

This wasn't just a "ramen joint"--it was a masterclass in authentic Fukuoka-style soul food. The Broth: Liquid Gold The standout was always their Signature Tonkotsu broth. You could literally taste the 30+ hours of labor that went into it. It had that distinct "frothy" texture (the bubble of the bone marrow) that you only find in high-end Hakata shops. It was rich, creamy, and carried a deep umami funk without ever being overly greasy. The Hits * Black Tonkotsu: The roasted garlic oil (mayu) added a smoky, dark complexity that ruined all other garlic ramens for me. * God Fire: For those who like to sweat, this offered the perfect balance of heat without sacrificing the integrity of the pork flavor. * The Karaage: Genuinely some of the best fried chicken in the area. Massive, juicy thigh meat with a shattering, thin crust and that addictive spicy mayo on the side. * Customization: I loved that they let you pick your noodle firmness. "Hard" was the only way to go to ensure that perfect snap with every bite. The Atmosphere The Costa Mesa location always had a great energy--functional, clean, and unpretentious. The staff were always efficient, greeting everyone with a loud "Irasshaimase!" that made the experience feel truly authentic. It's heartbreaking to see such a high-caliber spot leave the neighborhood. If you were lucky enough to eat here, you know we lost a heavy hitter. We walked into a casual, approachable space that works well for a quick lunch, a relaxed dinner, or a family meal. While the restaurant has expanded into multiple locations, it still keeps the feeling of a neighborhood Japanese spot where the focus is primarily on warm bowls of noodles and simple comfort food. The dining room is comfortable and unpretentious, with an atmosphere that feels more about the food than the decor. The ramen is one of the main draws, especially the Hakata style tonkotsu broth. The broth has the rich, savory profile expected from a pork based soup, while the noodles have a good texture and can be customized depending on your preference. We appreciated the ability to adjust noodle firmness and customize parts of the bowl, which gave it a more personalized feel compared to a standard ramen order. The ramen itself is enjoyable, though the portions and toppings can feel a little modest for the price, especially if you are expecting a fully loaded bowl. The chashu was tender and the broth had depth, but it did not feel like it was trying to compete with more elaborate ramen shops. The udon menu is where Shin-Sen-Gumi stands out the most. The bowls are hearty, comforting, and generous, with options ranging from classic udon to more unique creations. We tried the curry udon, a particularly popular choice, and it worked because the curry broth had a thicker consistency rather than feeling watered down. The combination of chewy noodles and rich curry made it a satisfying meal, especially on a colder day. Other options like the creamy uni udon and spicy miso udon offer more adventurous flavors if you want something beyond the traditional bowls. The udon noodles themselves were cooked well, with the right amount of chewiness, and the broths showed more creativity than the ramen offerings. Beyond the noodles, the side dishes help round out the meal. The gyoza is a reliable addition, and items like the pork fried rice are worth considering if you want a larger spread. We found the lunch specials to be a good way to try multiple items at once, usually combining ramen or udon with sides like gyoza or rice bowls. These combinations made the restaurant feel like a better value compared to ordering individual dishes, and the portions were generous enough to leave us satisfied. Service is one of the stronger parts of the experience. The staff was welcoming and attentive, creating a friendly environment that works especially well for families or groups. The dining room has a comfortable, casual feel, and the overall experience is more focused on being a dependable neighborhood restaurant rather than a destination style ramen shop. Wait times can happen during busy periods, but the service usually keeps things moving, and the staff handles the flow well without making the experience feel rushed.
