I came here for lunch randomly one day because I wanted sushi. I'm a fatass so I wanted AYCE rather than the pricier options around the area. Service was okay, can't expect much if I'm one of the few customers on a random weekday. So why the one star? I ordered the veggie tempura, and it was huge, especially since I was eating solo. The batter was horrible and sucked so i didn't want to eat most of it. Apparently, the "finish your food" applies to VEGETABLE tempura. Yes, they gave me the spiel of charging me for items I don't finish at the beginning.... The typical don't order what you can't finish.., I agreed since it's standard at most places and I'm not a fan of wasting food, but usually this doesn't apply to non-fish or luxury items.... Like VEGETABLE TEMPURA. It wasn't even shrimp tempura. I tried contesting it, but they didnt want to budge, so I'll give them 1-star and boycott this place for their efforts. read more

If you're not prepared to offer a true All You Can Eat experience, don't advertise it that way. My friend and I decided to visit Botan after seeing a $10 off promotion on Facebook. Before coming, I also checked Google and saw that the restaurant offers both All You Can Eat and à la carte options. We specifically chose Botan because we wanted an AYCE sushi experience. When we arrived, we asked the staff to confirm that the restaurant was all-you-can-eat, and they said yes. We also asked about the $10 promotion, and they explained that it doesn't apply to the AYCE menu. That was completely fine with us. We placed our first order and ordered 4 servings of salmon sashimi (12 pieces). Shortly afterward, the owner came over and told us that customers are limited to 4 ordering rounds. We said, "No problem," and accepted that rule. However, when we tried to order more salmon sashimi in the next round, the owner told us that we had already used our entire salmon sashimi allowance in the first round. My friend and I were both confused, but we didn't argue and simply went along with it. If salmon sashimi is limited to 4 servings per person for the entire meal, then how is this truly All You Can Eat? When a restaurant advertises "All You Can Eat," most customers reasonably expect they can continue ordering the included menu items throughout the meal, as long as they're within the 2-hour dining limit. We understand that restaurants can have rules, but major restrictions like a lifetime sashimi limit or a maximum of four ordering rounds should be clearly explained before customers are seated not after they've already started ordering. We left disappointed because the experience didn't match what was advertised. If there are important restrictions, such as a limit of four sashimi servings per guest for the entire meal or only four ordering rounds, those should be clearly stated in the advertisement and explained upfront so customers can make an informed decision before dining. read more

I've realized that my issue is that the food quality is pretty inconsistent. Some days the takoyaki is cold on the inside. Some days the ramen is super salty and I can't finish it. The rolls were amazing! Off a recommendation I grabbed my son from UCI and got sushi! The place looked very comfy and welcoming. The staff was very nice. I couldn't tell what kind of Aslan they were but I decided to give this place a try. I ordered 3 rolls and it came out fast! To my surprise it was delicious. I ate every bite. For the negative though, the wasabi was not hot. I needed more spice in my life. That's what my ex said. And the water they served was not cold to my liking. We decided to stop by right before we did some grocery shopping at albertsons. Pretty nice spot, spacious and clean. Service was okay. We had to ask for some miso soup twice & we didnt get our drinks until after we were almost done with our food. I asked for boba on mine and didnt get any. I checked the receipt after we paid and got charged for the boba. We got 2 rolls (las vegas fried & volcano baked roll) and they were pretty good. Coffee was good too. read more

First impression, ambiance is beautiful very female forward with floral and well lite. It was a bit too hot, as if no AC was on. Food was average, ordered a few rolls of sushi and didn't finish them. My girl said one of hers was fishy , mine were alright. She also ordered a chicken and rice dish, which was lack luster in flavor and not crispy. Her milk tea was basically all milk, boba was hard and crunchy. Service was decent, waitress seemed to assume we didn't know how to eat sushi and disuadid us from ordering more. Great Sushi spot that's really close to UCI, their portions are super generous and their prices are fair. One of the only AYCE sushi places that offer sashimi as part of their normal menu. I had lunch there and the fish to rice ratio was amazing. The atmosphere was super cute there and their service was amazing. They also have a coffee store in house which serves great drinks. I recommend their Grapefruit Jasmine Frappe. I would definitely come back here whenever I have the chance. read more

Service has always been slow and unfriendly but now the offerings are slim and the quality has gone down. Sashimi is no longer served like my previous photo. Good late night sushi spot. The service was excellent, the ordering system was efficient and the workers were kind. They gave us some free apple juice and calpico while we were waiting for our order! Very aesthetic interior with a lot of tables. I enjoyed the hawaii roll, ocean breeze roll, and umi delight roll. I usually am very strongly against cream cheese in sushi but the jalapeño complemented it perfectly. I ordered the UCI roll because zot zot zot but unfortunately it was my least favorite roll. The sweet potato and the asparagus are just not very appealing as sushi ingredients in my opinion. The miso soup tasted like water, I've never seen such clear miso broth. I have been ordering here almost weekly for several years and I think I'm finally done. The prices keep going up, the portions are getting smaller and smaller. The rolls are inconsistent from week to week. I really hate this because it's close to our house it was really good at one point, and sometimes still is. It's too expensive to be this inconsistent. Arrived around 9:15pm. Barely anyone inside so figured service would be fast. Took a while to order. They let you sit anywhere you like. Once ordered, food came out within 15 min or so depending what you got. Ambiance gives kawaii aesthetic as it was cute / girly with the pink and florals. Music was chill and easy going. TBH wrote this review to get the complimentary drink but also did my due diligence to give an honest review. I tried the peach oolong tea. When I received it, it was a large cup but it wasn't cold. Tasted sweet but not as refreshing... Noticed they offered ayce but was thinking it's probably better on a day when I can try lunch ($32.99). Also the guests that were there weren't really doing ayce so I was hesitant. For the signature bento box, it came with a couple slices of dill pickle, picked veggies, stir fried cabbage, California rolls, boiled egg, rice, and the protein of choice, in this case botan fried chicken. The chicken had a lot of flavor and was crispy. Everything else was mid or average. I've had better bento boxes but I did come to try since it was a spot near campus. Yo girl was still hungry so decided to try one of their rolls. Ordered the Ichi roll which reminded me of Alaska roll with lemon on it. So if you're familiar with Alaska roll (California roll with fresh salmon on top), then that's what it tasted like. Towards the end, the owner was kind to let me try their honey boba which was sweet and soft ! I added it to my drink and it made it so much better !! Hopefully next time I'll have a better experience. This place is so cute! Very kawaii! Also, you are greeted by a cat. Jk, at the entrance there is a cute cat waiving hi. The staff here is super nice and helpful. The vibes here are great. The ceiling is filled with flowers and so are the walls- very aesthetic. Hats off to the interior designers. The sushi was great- the salmon roll was my choice. The salmon melts in your mouth. I tried the Bento Tonkatsu box during lunch, and overall, it was a satisfying experience. The pork Tonkatsu was crispy with a nice balance of sweet and salty flavors. It came with a generous portion of cabbage, and a little bit of pickled greens (not sure what they are called), plenty of rice, and four California sushi rolls. It was filling! My only wish was for less cabbage and more variety in the sides. I'd give it a 7 out of 10 for the food. Came here on a Monday evening to grab a bite before grocery shopping. Right when you walk in, you're greeted by the most kawaii decor. We almost thought we were at a Hello Kitty cafe of sorts. We were met with friendly servers who allowed us to take a seat anywhere. The menu here is pretty large, with all kinds of Japanese food items like ramen, sushi, and bento boxes. For two people, we got the bento box with tonkatsu which also came with rice, 4pc cali roll, boiled cabbage, seasoned egg, and some radish. For apps, we also go a salmon cut roll, and the dinosaurian egg. The tonkatsu was good, but very thin, although the sauce on it was delicious! The salmon roll was okay. The fish was a bit warm, but maybe it's because being wrapped in rice made it warm. The dinosaurian egg is an avocado stuffed with crab meat and spicy tuna, deep fried. In theory it sounded good, but because everything was deep fried, it just all kind of tasted mushy and warm. Food came out within 10-15 minutes of ordering with our app coming out last. Overall, it was a decent spot for an affordable meal. For three items and two people, we spent about $40 which included tip. read more

Party of three showed up for a late dinner on Friday (2/20). We've seen a bunch of social media marketing about this place and liked that it was open "late" (11:00p). We walked in at 10:05p, there were people eating at 3-4 tables in the restaurant. We waited while the hostess/waitress helped a Door Dash driver pick us his delivery. Then she turns to us, and we say, "party of three". She says, "take out only, too late to sit down". I say, "there's an hour until you close". She says, "too late". I ordered from here online and, in hindsight, I probably made a grave mistake of doing so at the end of their lunch hours. I ordered the ICHI roll and a 2-for-1 spicy tuna roll and both were entirely inedible. While the spicy tuna roll was indeed spicy, beneath the pepper the whole of it tasted like flavorless and oddly stale fish mush. Not even smothering it in wasabi and soy sauce could save me from it. The ICHI roll was absolutely disgusting even by looks alone. The salmon on top was really thin and almost slimy, looking more like silly putty than fish. I tried a bite, hoping this would be different, but the immediately horrendous mouthfeel was only worsened by the flavor of sweet and cloying rot. I gagged and spit it out immediately, throwing all of the rolls in the garbage soon after. Even an hour later, I still can't get the film of gently rotting fish off my tongue. The miso soup was the only thing that was edible, but honestly the soup-to-seaweed skewed heavily towards the latter -- it felt like I barely had any soup with it. Highly recommend the Volcano Baked Roll! Generously topped, with a warm, crispy layer on top--amazing texture and flavor! Also loved the cucumber roll without rice--it was super refreshing and light, perfect for a clean palate. They also offer bento boxes, which are perfect for solo diners.
